By Willie Crowther and Don Woods (1977)
David M. Baggett's 1993 reconstruction, ported by Graham Nelson
Release 3 / Serial number 951220 / Inform v1600 Library 6/1

Everyone knows this one. "You are inside a building, a well house
for a large spring."

This game is freeware. It is derived from the source code for a TADS
version of this game. The TADS source is by David M. Baggett, and is
copylefted under the terms of the GNU Public License.

This application requires System 7, and 1.6 megs of free memory. If
you don't have System 7, or you want a non-Mac version of this game,
or you just want to try a different interpreter, please look in
ftp://ftp.gmd.de/if-archive/. There are also lots of other text

Subject: [*] Alpha 6.1.2

From: [email protected] (Pete Keleher)

This is version 6.1.2 of Alpha, a completely customizable and programmable
text editor especially tuned to handle source code and LaTeX files.
Alpha is:

o Powerful. Alpha uses Dr. Ousterhout's Tool Command Language (Tcl) as a
scripting language. Tcl is rapidly becoming a popular extension language
over many different hardware platforms.
o Customizable. Any function or keystroke sequence can be bound to any key,
menus are completely user-specified and modifiable.
o Emacs-ish. Alpha supports many of the key bindings and central concepts
of GNU Emacs. It is not a port, however, and uses a Tcl instead of LISP
as an extension language.
o Multi-modal. Alpha supports mode-specific:
bindings
menus
keyword colorizing
Alpha currently has 20 different modes, including modes for the following
languages: Ada, C, C++, Fortran, HTML, Java, Pascal, Perl, Postscript,
Scheme, SQL, Tcl, and TeX (including both LaTeX and LaTeX2e).
o Interoperable. Alpha allows user scripts to build and send arbitrary
AppleEvents. Currently, the default configuration of Alpha inter-operates
with several different compilers, including CodeWarrior and Symantec C/C++,
several LaTeX implementations, including OzTeX, DirectTeX, and Textures
(although Textures' AppleEvent support is currently very weak), and several
other applications, such as MacPerl, BibTeX, Excalibur, the ToolServer, and
Eudora.
o Native on the PowerMac.
o Uses the latest Apple technologies, such as Drag and Drop, and AEGizmos.
o Uses Ramon Felciano's Mercutio menu definition routines.
o Internet Config-aware.

Alpha is ShareWare, $30.

Subject: [*] BibTeX for the Mac PowerPC

Version 1.0b4 --- this is beta software. All previous known bugs have been
fixed, however, use at your own risk; there is no warranty....

Features:

* it works;
* reasonably fast (the original bibtex code is sadly not up to scratch
as far as efficieny goes);
* support high-level apple events etc. so you can drag a '.aux' file (or
several) onto it for processing, or send it an odoc event from
Alpha...
* friendly to other apps (actually calls WaitNextEvent)
* Fat binary; also runs on 68k (but I haven't tested it)
* Source code available
* Common search path for both .bst and .bib files, although you
can of course keep them in separate directories if you like.

It's free for educational/charitable use; corporate users please pay a
shareware fee of $10 (cheque or cash payable to Vince Darley, 5 Rose
Street, Somerville, MA 02143, USA; equivalent local currency is ok); site
licenses available -- contact me for further information.

Subject: [*] CampFire_DemoPPC

CampFire demonstrates a fast, sophisticated flame algorithm in action.
It's not a full blown graphics demo, but these effects have been used
in PC graphics demos in the past. The file contains 4 individual
applications, readme files, and the code. Three of the applications
display the flame at various resolutions from 100X300 to 240X480, and the
forth displays a Volcanoe also useing the same technique but throwing up
particles that interact with the algorithm.
Anyway... we hope you enjoy this little demo. This, as well as many
other effects we have perfected, are all going into our new games
scientificaly designed to push the PPC processor to it's limits! ;)
The first of which will be released sometime March '96. HAVE FUN!
Requirements: Any Mac with PPC processor/8-bit display.

ChordFinder! v1 -- An Interactive Chord Naming System

ChordFinder! v1 provides chord look up for those musicians who would rather
read chord symbols than stacks of notes. 42 chord types are
recognized--simply click the notes you want on the staff, play them to hear
how they sound, and then have the program name it for you. ChordFinder
returns a name or a list of names for the chord if the chord can be named,
and returns "Unknown" if ChordFinder! cannot name the chord.

ChordFinder! v1 recognizes the following chords: Major, Minor, Major 7th,
Minor 7th, Dominant 7th, Major 9th, Minor 9th, Major 6/9, Minor 6/9, Major
6th, Minor 6th, Dominant 9th, Major 11th, Minor 11, Dominant 11th, Major
13th, Minor 13th, Dominant 13th, Major 7 - 5, Minor 7 - 5, Dominant 7 - 5,
Major 7 + 5, Dominant 7 + 5, Dominant 7 - 9, Dominant 7 + 9, Diminished
7th, Augmented, Suspended 2nd, Suspended 4th, Dominant 7th suspended 4th,
Dominant 9th suspended 4th, Dominant 7th suspended 2nd, Major add 9, Minor
add 9, Minor/Major 7th, Major add 4, Minor add 4, Major (no 3rd), Dominant
9 + 11, Dominant 13 - 9, Major (no 5th), and Minor (no 5th).

System Requirements: This function requires a Macintosh with System 7.1 or
higher and a 68020, 68030, 68040, or PowerPC processor. QuickTime with the
QuickTime Musical Instruments extension is required for sound output.

Subject: [*] Coco/MC-P 2.2 Demo

Enclosed is the demonstration version of the Coco/MC-P Photoshop Plug In.
Following is the vendor description. It is useful for anyone who needs to
change colors of elements in Photoshop, but doesn't want to take the time
to produce a complex mask. It is also useful for people who want to
separate Photoshop images into colors other than CMYK.

CoCo - Multipoint selective color correction

CoCo is a powerful plug-in for Photoshop that puts multichannel color
correction and soft-proofing capabilities right on your desktop. With CoCo,
color correction is simpler than ever before: just pick a color and change
it.

CoCo Multipoint

CoCo Multipoint offers a smooth and easy, quantitative color correction on
RGB and CMYK images and provides a natural transition of colors while
retaining the original modulation. It allows you to correct up to sixteen
colors in any one filter. Plus, any single element's light, mid and dark
tones can be dealt with individually. The range function gives full control
over the range of colors to be corrected. Primarily developed for and
tested in a high-end prepress environment, CoCo brings
high-end quality color correction right to your desktop.

MC-P/CoCo

In addition to all of the features of CoCo Multipoint, this tool allows you
to work in more than four channels, and with colors other than Cyan,
Magenta, Yellow and Black. MC-P/CoCo makes use of VISU's "Ink Display"
Technique" which allows you to easily change the color in which the
channels of an image are displayed. For example, screen printers,
floxographers, and others may
have a job printing in magenta, yellow, black, and brown. With the "Ink
Display Technique" the cyan channel can be displayed in brown, resulting in
a visual impression of how the printed result will look. The paper color
function offers a softproof of how an image will look when printed on a
colored substrate. MC-P/CoCo also gives provides for bump plates,
varnishes, and HiFi color applications. The product integrates tightly with
the Colortron spectral photometer.

Subject: CopyThru v2.2.5 - Removable Media Block Copier

CopyThru v2.2.5 makes duplicates of HFS volumes with the option of
segmenting the copy through a fixed (or simply not-removed) volume. In
other words, it is a multi-pass block copier for removable media.

Say you have a single 1Gb removable-cartridge optical and 100Mb of
available hard disk space. You want to copy optical volume A: to optical
volume B:. If you drag sets of folders manually from A: to the hard drive,
eject, and then drag them from the hard drive to B: then it takes you 6
hours with 34 ejections & insertions. With CopyThru it takes a mere hour
and only requires 11 ejections & insertions!

CopyThru fills up your hard drive (or as much of it as you permit to be
filled-up) with blocks, ejects the source volume, requests the destination
volume, and then repeats until the copy is completed. Since it does
asynchronous block-copying, it is much faster than Finder-dragging.

Version 2.2.5. 680x0 Macs. 150Kb application partition, (but it swipes
all the system memory that it can get away with!)

Version 2.2.5 supports B&W and small-screen Macs.

E-mail-ware. If you use it, send me e-mail and let me know.

Cyclone started with the classic video game Star Castle (created in 1980 by
Cinematronics), and updated it for the 90's, adding new weapons, shields,
bonus points and challenge levels, as well as state-of-the-art color graphics
and sound. In Cyclone, an evil enemy base sits in the middle of the screen,
surrounded by three rotating shield rings. The rings are segmented, and the
individual segments can be destroyed, allowing weapons to pass through to or
>From the enemy base when holes in the three rings line up. The base also
protects itself with a never-ending supply of you-seeking guided mines. Your
task is to use your trusty FireHawk 6000 spaceship to blast through the
enemy's defenses and blow the base to smithereens. You have an impressive
arsenal at your command, but beware the enemy's plasma cannon! If you have a

in the other direction, and his shots are much bigger than yours!

Subject: [*] eForm 1.0b4

Form is a suite of applications that implements electronic forms for the
Macintosh; it has three components.

The first application, the 'Generator' has a dual purpose. Firstly, it
provides facilities for the creation, storage and testing of electronic
forms. Secondly, when one or more forms have been created and tested the
application may then be used to generate a 'Sender' application. This
application may be configured with one or more of the stored forms and is
essentially a cut-down version of the Generator without any of the form
creation or editing capabilities.

The second program of the suite is the 'Sender' application, created in the
manner described above. The application is intended to be an easy to use
tool for office staff, that enables the direct filling in, and immediate
transmission of forms. The application may be configured with any number of
forms and provides facilities for the completion, validation and
submission of the forms. The manner in which a form is dispatched to its
intended recipient is by embedding the form data within an eMail message.
The Sender application does not send the eMail message itself but hands
over responsibility to a separate eMail application, referred to as its
eMail 'helper'.

The third application, the 'Receiver' provides facilities for processing
received forms, ie. forms that have arrived at their destination embedded
in eMail messages. It does not receive eMail messages itself, it instead
relies upon a separate eMail application, its eMail helper. It scans the
mailboxes of its helper recognising and reading only those messages that
contain embedded form data about which it knows, ie. for which it has been
configured. The extracted messages are then processed. A message is
firstly scanned and the form data is extracted. The extracted data may
then, optionally be written to a database. This is achieved by handing the
data over to a separate database application, referred to as the database
'helper'. The data may also be written to a text file. An automatic reply
may be sent and the message transferred to another mailbox.

Requirements
a) System 7.5 or later.
b) AppleScript 1.1 or later.
c) Geneva and Monaco 9 point fonts.
d) Courier 12 point

Electric Poet 1.6

by Niklas Frykholm

Electric Poet can use an ordinary text file as a mould for creating its own
litterary works. This works best with abstract poetry where it's sometimes
hard to tell real from bogus.

This version includes a sample library that generates star wars dialogue.

No new features have been added to v. 1.6, but several quite serious bugs
have been corrected.

ElectricPoet is now also available as a CGI-program. You can find a
demonstration at:

Enjoy a rousing conversation with your Mac. Eliza will play the part of a
psychologist, conducting an open-ended clinical interview. As the patient,
you can get Eliza's opinions and advice on a wide range of subjects. Eliza
has a large vocabulary and the ability to formulate a virtually unlimited
number of responses.

...and if you have Apple's Speech Manager (PlainTalk), you can actually watch

Speech Manager's capabilities!

Version 6.0 allows you to choose the gender of your therapist (male or female
"talking head"). I say "Eliza" sounds like a male name, however the rest of
the English-speaking world disagrees. You decide.

Also, this version features several significant improvements in the response

Eliza can function as a bare bones text editor. (For a full-featured text

Subject: [*] HackScape!

It's been said before, many times, many ways: Netscape is the best browser
around these days. Sleek interface, kewl plug-ins, etc. But some say some
details are just a mite too... corporate. The "shooting star" animation in
the upper right hand corner for example. Ask yourself: is it really
"Disney-esque" or is it just plain "Pansy City"? If you're like me, the
answer is the latter: it's sissy-boy central. But how to fix?

The answer is here. An animation that not only doesn't look like an ad for
an insurance co., it rocks! It requires ResEdit to install. The main image
is one we're all familiar with: the "Hackers Helper" skull (design not by
me - if you are aware of who the artist is, please let me know so I can
credit/thank them). The skull's green eyes blink. The animation consists
of a shifting black/red background, while around the edges is a "fractal"
type design that tells the ladies: "I have a sensitive/abstract side too,
y'know. "

HackScape is a companion to my "Netskul!" splash screen for Netscape. It's
avail at the usual spots: Info-Mac, Umich, etc. Should be under
"art/graphics" category, I believe. If you'd like to see any other
additions, or have any ideas regarding, please let me know.

Payment

Netskul! is email-ware. You simply have to email me and let me know where
you found HackScape!, if you dig it, if you're having probs w/it, if you
have any other ideas for fun stuff, if you've found any cool Mac Hack
related stuff, if you've done an animation of your own (try it!), if you
have a new Mac Hack related page, if you've added a link to my page, if you
know of any other kewl ResEd hacks, etc. I'd appreciate it. Oh yeah, email

------ THE BEST ICON DATABASE EVER SEEN ON THE MAC ! -------

The Icon Archiver is an extremely powerful database
specifically designed for easy icon storage and retrieval. It
can quickly scan whole disks or folders and grab all the icons
they contain, including those you won't ever see in the Finder
and all icon archives created by other icon utilities. Drag &
Drop is fully supported, so you can create or stick custom
icons by simply dragging them around. All icons are compressed
on the fly to save memory and disk space, and archives can
contain a very large number of icons (unlike all other icon
utilities which are limited to a few hundreds). Advanced
features include removing duplicate icons, sorting them by
shape, filtering them by size or color depth, and viewing them
in many different ways. The Archiver includes native PowerPC
code and its icon handling routines are highly optimized for
maximum speed.

Even if you hate custom icons, you'll be fascinated by the
number of icons that come out of a typical shareware CD-ROM
like the ones that are bundled with many Mac magazines. No
matter what you use your Mac for, this is guaranteed to give

This is the first release of IC to PC Exchange. IC to PC Exchange takes
the file mappings from Internet Config and inserts them into the
preferences files of PC Exchange. This saves you from manually entering
these into the PC Exchange Control Panel if you wish files on your DOS
floppy to have the correct file type, creator and icon.

Requires Internet Config 1.2, probably requires System 7, to be of use
requires the PC Exchange Control Panel.

IC to PC Exchange is free.

Share and Enjoy.

Subject: InfoBrowser 3.0 - For Browsing Info-Mac Digests

Hey Folks, Here is a freeware stack that allows one to browse Info Mac
Digests. I think it has some small advantages over EasyView. Mainly it
allows you to collect files to download into a file, strip various parts
>From the names so the Files can then be gathered with one or more of the
Apple Script based apps that work with Anarchie (Batch FTP 2.0 for
example). The clip files are not as flexible in Easy View.

I would appreciate an email message if you use and like this HC stack.

Uses HC version 2.0 or greater. You must be getting the Info-Mac files as
Mail files. THey need to be saved to your computer as text files. If
using Eudora do a save as and uncheck the box marked guess paragraphs.
Include headers.

Thanks,

Subject: [*] Kill FinderZooms 1.5.1

From: [email protected] (Jonathan Jacobs)
Subject: Kill FinderZooms 1.5.1

Oh hell: The version I submitted as 1.5 was not actually supposed to be
released. It had a problem, as some people have let me know (in varying
degrees of politeness...).

Here is an update to "Kill FinderZooms." This is version 1.5.1 which adds
support for Finder 7.5.4. Read the version history in the "About..." file
for the whole sordid tale.

What does "Kill FinderZooms" do?
Do you like the time-wasting animation the Finder draws every time you
open a window, close a window (or an application) or align an object to the
grid? I sure don't. For the open and close window stuff I guess it's not
so bad, but when I want to clean up a bunch of stuff, it can take seemingly
forever. (About eight seconds for perhaps 50 items when viewed by large or
small icon.) And Apple hasn't given us the option to turn off this little
show.

This application, Kill FinderZooms, will hack _a copy_ of your Finder to
disable these zoom rectangles. I made the original hack by hand last
summer (June '94) on Finder 7.1.4 and have haven't seen anything really
wonky happen as a result. Therefore I feel it's safe to release this to
the world.

This will work on Finder versions 7.1.3, 7.1.4, 7.5.1, 7.5.3 and 7.5.4
(check the "Get Info" for your copy to be certain). These versions are
seen with all flavors of System 7.5.x, on 68K or PPC Macs, on NuBus Macs
and the new PCI Macs The application will only modify a copy of the
Finder (one that has the name locked bit turned off). This is for your
protection. This practically forces you to keep a backup of the original
file... just in case. There's no guarantee that there won't be some really
obscure nastiness that might show up later, but I've run the modified
Finder on many machines for many months and have lived to tell the tale.

Subject: [*] LogicSim 2.7.2b

LogicSim is an application that simulates digital circuits.

It has an easy-to-use graphical interface similar to standard drawing
programs. Circuits are built up from standard elements (gates, flip-flops,
LEDs, switches, etc.) and can include more complicated modules created by
compiling a previous circuit or pascal code resource (SDK supplied).
LogicSim also has a "Signals window" providing an oscilloscope display of
the signals at nodes in the circuit. LogicSim is now a
discrete-time-event-simulator which makes it more accurate than LogicSim
2.2 and most shareware simulators which use a fixed delay for all gates.

LogicSim runs on a Macintosh LC or better and requires System 7 or greater
(with System 7 you must have the Macintosh Drag-And-Drop in your Extensions
Folder [included in LogicSim package]).

This program is PostcardWare. If you like and use it, you must send me a
nice postcard.

Subject: [*] MacDeu - Doom Level Editor

MacDeu is a Doom Level editor. It is a beta port of a beta version of
IBM deu 5.3. Sound scary? It should. Ok, the bad news first. The
interface is NOT altogether mac-like, although it's getting better.

Now the good news: it works. You can now make levels for doom. (Save
often) As far as I know, this is the only WAD editor for the mac, so
think of this as a substitute for running Deu in SoftPC, instead of
pointing out how bad it looks.

You can always get the newest version of this program at my home page:

Improvements for version 5.3b9v4:
*Real Dialogs. This avoids all the bugs in deu's dialog routines (but
adds any in mine).
*Fixed "save as".
*Made texture drawing faster, and less disk intensive.
*Fixed bug where wall texture reading from a PWAD wouldn't work.
*Fixed Go to object command.
*The wall texture viewer shows the number of "Patches" on a wall.
*Made Things show their direction with an arrow.
*Added "quickredraw" option to make dragging objects faster on slower
computers (although less pretty)

Subject: PrinterSwitch 1.0 beta 3

Changes in Beta 3 Release:

* PrinterSwitch is now a Control Panel.

* Added new features: Page Setup activation, "hot key" activation,
registration & about dialogs.

* Fixed "error -43" problems when using LaserWriter 7.x printer drivers.

---------------------------

PrinterSwitch is a control panel/system extension that allows you to
easily select among many different printers when you print documents in
your applications. It eliminates the need to use the Chooser to select a
printer.

PrinterSwitch complements Apple's new Desktop Printers because it allows
you to select different print devices even if your application won't let
you drag & drop documents onto a Desktop Printer.

This is beta software. PrinterSwitch has been tested on many Macintosh
configurations, but I cannot guarantee it is 100% reliable. Please don't
use PrinterSwitch 1.0b3 if you are uncomfortable with beta software.

Brookline Software is releasing this beta software to the public so that
it may be tested across a wide range of Macintoshes, printers, and
application software. You can help speed the testing process by reporting
how well PrinterSwitch performs on your system. Please see the
accompanying Report Form to tell us how PrinterSwitch works for you.

Version 1.0 beta 3 supercedes 1.0 beta 1 and beta 2.

Subject: secret finder features extension

Dear MacGifts,

Unbeknownst to many, the currently available Finder 7.5.4
(available as part of the System 7.5.2 PowerBook 190/5300/2300 update) and
the upcoming Finder 7.5.5 (in System 7.5.3 / System Update 2.0) have secret
features which many have desired for a long time. While shareware/freeware
extensions have patched the Finder to give users what they want, what could
be easier and safer than simply enabling them? Why hasn't Apple made these
features known? Quite simply, they haven't had the resources to adequately
test them. So don't ask Apple -- and please DO NOT send me mail asking for
Finder 7.5.5 or inquiring further about how I obtained this extension or
complaining that they don't work on your computer. They are as follows:

Control-Drag an item to make an alias to it
Command-R to Reveal the original item of an alias
Command-Delete Moves selection to the Trash
Enable/Disable the zoom rectangles when opening/closing windows and gridding

This INIT does mainly the same thing. I have tested these features and I've
found them to work perfectly-- however, when you place files in the trash
via command-delete, the positions of the icons aren't reset, so when you
open your trash can, the moved files may not immediately be visible. All
you have to do is clean up the trash window.

ValueFax is the first shareware fax program for the Macintosh.
This is a commercial quality, full function product with QuickFax,
fax driver, full reception and conversion of the fax in background,
installer, and an online manual. Versions of this product have
been shipping commercially under different names for several years.
The basic product has been thoroughly tested in a variety of Mac
configurations using a variety of Class 1 and Class 2 modems (this
product will not work with modems that support Class 2.0 only or
with Apple's express modems or with Apple's Geoport modems).

Why would you want to use this product?

* you bought an external fax modem for your PC but you would
also like to use it with your Mac.
* you bought an external fax modem for the Mac but the software
that came with it is too "lite" for your work. The bundled
software may not even work in your configuration.
* you are not happy with your current fax software because it is
old and does not have all the features of ValueFax. What's more,
your current software looks like it has been ported from its
PC (ugh!) version.
* Your company owns several Macs and you are looking for a site
license instead of buying individual copies for everyone.

Support is available via email to [email protected]
We want this product to work in your configuration and we will
do our best to make it work.

I am hoping that someone has sorted through all the Proforma models and can

I am helping someone decide on which model to get. She has narrowed it
down to 3 models. The 5200CD, the 5215CD and the 6205CD. From the Apple
stat sheets it looks like the only difference between the 5215CD and the
5200CD is that the 5215CD has more software? Is this correct? The 6205CD
comes with a 28kbs modem which is what she wants (instead of 14,4kbs). How
do the 6205CD and the 5200's compare in proformance?

Are all the monitors identical in these models?

What advantages does an AV card give? This computer will be used from home.

How do all these models compare with a 7200CD? does this computer have (or
