Subject: [*] ChordBook v1 -- An Interactive Chord Book for Guitar
ChordBook v1 provides chord lookup for guitar in standard tuning, and
additional chord processing for 40 non-standard guitar tunings. In the
standard tuning library, 23 chord types are supported with 3 or 4 different
fingerings each, depending upon the chord. To plot a chord diagram,
select the root of the chord from the Root menu, and the type of the chord
>From the Type menu. Then, diagram it with the Form 0,1,2,3 buttons from
the tool bar. Non-standard tunings do not contain these built-in chords,
but full use of the Neck Window functions are supported (see below).
In standard tuning, Form 0 chords are available for Major, Minor, Major
7th, and Dominant 7th chord forms and are generally the open or common
forms of the chord. Form 1 chords generally have the root on the 6th
string. Form 2 chords generally have the root on the 5th string, and Form
3 chords generally have the root on the 2nd and/or 5th string.
The Neck Window view provides additional chord lookup functions. This
window allows the browsing of chord fingerings over the neck and has a
Name-that-Chord function which recognizes 40 different chords in standard
and non-standard tunings. These user-created chord voicings may then be
diagramed in the chord editor window.
This function requires a Macintosh with System 7.1 or higher and a 68020,
68030, 68040, or PowerPC processor. A color monitor with at least 480
lines is highly recommended. QuickTime with the QuickTime Musical
Instruments extension is required for sound output.

The two files "Copland Folder Resources" and "Silver Copland Folder
Resources" included in this package are intended for use with Folder Icon
Maker, the custom folder icons creator by Gregory M. Robbins.
Just put them in the FIM folder.
The "Copland Folder Resources" file contains the complete icon family
according to the Copland-style one found in the Aaron 1.2 extension by
Gregory D. Landweber and ISYS Development, Corp.
The "Silver Copland Folder Resources" file contains a gray-gradient version
of the same icons for those of you feeling comfortable in a metallic
environment.
The FIM Copland Folder Resources package is free.
You can extract the icons from the resource files for your personal use, if
you want, but, for the use with Folder Icon Maker, I recommend version 1.5
of FIM and System 7.5.
Thanks and best regards.

Subject: [*] Listserv-Eudora-EasyView-FAQ.txt
Dear Digest readers and readers of the archive,
For anyone having trouble using EasyView as a means of reading the Listserv
of comp.sys.mac.digest this FAQ is for you.
A. Software requirements:
Eudora 1.5.3 or Eudora 1.5.4.
EasyView 2.6.1 (shareware)
PPP or SLIP connection
B. Assuming you are already getting the archive by e-mail from one of the
listservs that distributes it you will want to do to do the following -
1. In the Finder - Be sure that the document with the "V" icon and name
of "Info-Mac Digest"
resides in the same folder as "EasyView" application. You may
have to move it out of the
"Info-Mac Digest folder".
2. In Eudora - Shift mouse click every Digest of the same #
i.e. Info-Mac Digest V14 #41 1/2
Info-Mac Digest V14 #41 2/2
are both of the same number and appear in the subject field
of your Eudora "In" mailbox
window.
3. From the File menu select "Save As" and change your active folder
to the same one that
"EasyView" and "Info-Mac Digest" are located in.
4. Now look at the bottom of the "Save As" dialog box, and check to
see what is the status of
both "Guess Paragraphs and Include Headers". You will either
notice that they both have "x"
in boxes next to them or just a plain square boxes next to them.
If just the plain square
boxes are next to them, that means both of these settings are off.
That is the way you
want them to be. If an X is in any of the boxes, click on the box
to turn it off. Now you are
ready to save the file by clicking the save box.
If you don't follow this four step process, you will likely have problems
reading the digest once in EasyView.
Standard Disclaimers apply: Other methods, such as other e-mail programs
may also work, though I haven't tried these yet.
Hope this helps.
Sincerely,
[email protected]

multi-media presentations painless and straightforeward. It has already
been used to give highly effective presentations to international

look best on 16 and 32 bit displays, but the program generates dedicated
color palettes for images displayed in an 8 bit color enviornment. This
features ensure that presentations from the current series of notebook
computers look as good as possible. Optimization of movie play-back is
accomplished by setting several user-defined parameters allowing movie
looping, preloading etc. Registered users get a disk containing a program
version without shareware reminders, manual, discounts on and direct

Subject: [*] ReWrite 0.2.7
ReWrite is a small self contained compiler for a functional language
which uses a rewrite rule syntax.
Documentation (including a 70 page manual) is included in the archive.
There is also a short section on ReWrite in the "Programming Paradigms"
column in the Feb 1996 edition of Dr. Dobbs Journal.
* ReWrite 0.2.7 changes:
- powerful new functions using function pointers (Map, Apply ... )
- an expanded manual, including a 'getting started' section
- docs now done with eDoc
- several bugs fixed (including a fatal one with project management)
The main features of ReWrite are:
* it uses the syntax of rewrite rules to define functions;
* it has the non-destructive attributes of a functional language, in
that there are no side effects (except such things as screen output);
* it has no 'eval' mechanism, so is a purely eager language (like Pascal/C);
* it compiles to moderately efficient 68020/68030 machine code;
* in the compiler, rules are interleaved, so similar rules execute quickly;
* it is strongly but dynamically typed - types may be checked at runtime;
* it is in a sense a minimal language - it only has a simple syntax;
* although making extensive use of lists, it neither has not requires any
garbage collection mechanism - all functions clean up after themselves;
* The ReWrite compiler is relatively small and clean and written in ReWrite
itself.
System requirements:
ReWrite will run on any Macintosh with at least a 68020 CPU and at
least 1.5 Megabytes of available memory. It also requires System 7.0 or
later. It will run in emulation on a PowerMac.

use an ISP and Eu-dork-a 1.5.4. The message saved as 14 parts. I know I
need to put these parts back together, and then decode them....I just don't
know how.
Any ideas?
I also know that this sound is a PC WAV sound file. Is there a utility to
convert a WAV to a Mac based sound and vice-versa??
Thanks!!!!

Subject: [A] PopChar, British Pounds, and MS Word
The mystery has been solved! Many thanx to all of you
who contributed solutions to the PopChar mystery, especially
Duane W. Small, who contributed the key clue. Here's how it
unfolded, and some helpful hints for getting PopChar to work
with MicroSoft Word, (if you really have to use a MS product,
as I do).
I realized quite quickly, thanx to a flood of letters from
satisfied customers, that PopChar works fine with Apple
System 7.5 (as it should be!). Further investigation showed
that PopChar worked fine on my system with QuickMail, too -
I just never had occasion to use it with QM, which is why
I thought it was a system-wide problem. MS Word is our
main axe, and PopChar Definately Did Not Work there.
I was ready to just curse Microsoft and go on with life when
Duane's hint arrived. PopChar needs a Font menu (which is why
it didn't work for me with Stickies, either), and Word 6
doesn't come pre-configured with one. I suppose one good
thing about Word is that it's very configurable - but the
negative corrolary is that it is not an intuitive, easy step
to add a Font menu. (Especially since, as a matter of habit,
I trash large help files as part of any installation process -
Mac software should be intuitive!, and my disk space is at a
premium). Believe it or not, the hardcopy Word manual was no
help - it just refered me to online help. Sheesh!
After much running around trying to restore online help, I finally
have PopChar working under Word 6. If any of you find yourself in
a similar conundrum, here is how to get PopChar to work with
Word 6 (and I recommend a 'real' fonts menu anyway - its more
responsive than the button bar):
-From the Tools menu, choose Customize
-Select the Menus tab.
-Choose the Menu Bar button.
-In the Name on Menu Bar box, type 'Font'.
-Select where you want your font menu from the list of menus,
then click the 'Add After' button.
-In the 'Choose What Menu' pop-up, you now have 'Font'.
Select this menu.
-At the bottom of the 'Categories' pop up, select 'Fonts'.
-Click the 'Add All' button.
You now have a working Font menu. One last catch, though.
For some unknown reason, you've got to select PopChar twice
to get it to work. But it does work!!!!
Thanx again to all who contributed to this solution.

Subject: [Q] compressing/decoding question
I am just in the process of trying out compression/encoding
applications suitable for my needs and have experienced some small
problems that perhaps someone can help me with: it seems like
the packages StuffitLite + Stuffit Expander + dropStuff w Expander
Enhancer would do basically everything I need. However, there are
situations where they cannot encode/unstuff files although the files are
in the correct format.
Example 1: When decoding binhexed files, Stuffit Expander sometimes
complains about not being able to verify the integrity of the
resource/data fork or it indicates checksum errors
although the alternative decoding application Binhex4 can decode the
file perfectly well without complaining. (And the resulting decoded
file is perfectly alright)
Example 2: With files of type file.sit.hqx.gz Stuffit Expander again
complains about integrity of forks as well as indicate checksum errors
if I do the first gunzip decoding using Macgzip. However, if I decode
and unpack everything using Stuffit Expander everything works smoothly.
What is the problem in these cases? Do I need to keep BinHex4 and
Macgzip around to be sure to be able to decode everything or is there
a fix that helps Stuffit Expander to deal with these cases.

Subject: Another aggravating keyboard question...
I used MS Word 5.1a almost exclusively until lately; now I usually use
ClarisWorks 3.0 (came with a Performa). My problem is that I often construct
training documentation for my clients, and I need to be able to type the
symbol (double-infinity?) that appears on the "command" key on Mac keyboards.
In _all_ other programs that I have tried, control-Q does the trick (at
least in the Chicago font). But in ClarisWorks, this key combination just
leaves a narrow blank space (in all 45 fonts I have tried).
Does anyone know why this doesn't work in ClarisWorks? And is there a way

Subject: Data Recovery Toolkit - A Horror Story!!
On November 29, 1995 my hard drive crashed. I had seen advertisements
of a product called Data Recovery Toolkit manufactured by Total Recall,
Inc. which was described as disaster recovery software. I called Total
Recall, Inc. and described my problem. I asked if they thought Data
Recovery Toolkit could recover data from my crashed hard drive. They
said there was a high likelihood that it would.
On the basis of that, I purchased Data Recovery Toolkit from Total
Recall, Inc. I paid $179.00 plus 8.00 for shipping.
I installed the program but it didnt solve my problem. I called the
company and they told me to send them the drive. I did and they called
me back and said they too had been unable to recover my data. They
returned the hard drive to me.
Even though the program had not solved my problem, I believed it would
provide good protection against future crashes and I kept the product
(and paid for it). Several days later, when I tried to access the
program, it requested the original floppy disk. After re-reading the
documentation, I realized that this was not normal so I telephoned the
company.
After several calls (and extended waiting periods) I finally spoke with
Kelly in the Technical Support Department on January 5, 1996. After
another 45 minutes, Kelly concluded that the disk was probably defective
and he told me that he could not send me a replacement disk until I sent
the original to him. I pointed out to him that two of the hard disks
that I was using had no more room on them (due to a "feature" of the
program that creates an invisible file of all deleted files for a
specified time period) and that, without the floppy I would not be able
to delete the files that were clogging the hard drives. Kelly insisted
that he could not send a replacement disk until he had received the
defective one but assured me that he would send the replacement
immediately upon receipt of the defective disk.
I sent the defective disk on January 5th. And I waited. On January 16th
I called and spoke with Tex (Kelly wasn't available). Tex told me that
Kelly had been at the MacWorld Expo the previous week and hadn't gotten
around to sending the disk, but that he (Tex) would send one out
immediately. He said the company ships by Airborne Express so I could
expect to receive the disk the following day.
On January 17th when I did not receive the replacement disk, I called
to speak to Tex. I was not able to get through to technical support and,
after four calls, I finally spoke to the operator (Mike). By this time I
was extremely angry and I asked Mike the name of the president of the
company so I could talk with him. Mike's response was that he was not
permitted to give out that information.
On January 18th I again telephoned the company. I spoke with Tex and
asked him who the president of the company was and he said that Kelly
was the boss. I reminded Tex of our previous conversation and his
promise to send me a replacement disk. He said he had passed my message
on to Kelly. I asked to speak with Kelly but Tex said Kelly was too
busy. However, after speaking with Kelly, Tex told me Kelly promised to
send my replacement disk before the end of the week (this was Thursday).
On January 23rd I wrote to Total Recall, Inc. and told them that, in
view of the way they had ignored my calls, I had no confidence in them
and I demanded a refund.
On January 26th I received a telephone call from Kelly. He said he
would send me a disk so I could uninstall the key from my drives. He
said that when I did so and returned the disk to him, he would send me a
refund.
On January 30th I received the disk with a letter from Kelly Leopard,
President telling me that he had decided not to give me a refund.
I attempted to uninstall the program but received a message that said
Error while deauthorizing. The hard disk you attempted to deauthorize
was not authorized by this master diskette...
This confirmed that the program had never installed properly in the
first place (which was the reason I returned the defective disk on
January 5th). It also proves that I have not retained a copy of the
software on my hard drive since the program only operates from an
unlocked master floppy which I no longer have.
On January 31st I returned the disk. In my letter I gave Kelly one last
chance to refund my money. On February 2nd he telephoned me and said he
had no intention of doing so.
Should you buy Data Recovery Toolkit or do business with Total Recall,
Inc? What do you think?

Subject: [*] Mando! v1 -- An Interactive Chord Book for Mandolin
Mando! v1 provides chord lookup for Mandolin in standard tuning, and
additional chord processing for 4 non-standard mandolin tunings and the
Mandola. In the standard tuning library, 17 chord types are supported with
3 or 4 different fingerings each, depending upon the chord. To plot a
chord diagram, select the root of the chord from the Root menu, and the
type of the chord from the Type menu. Then, diagram it with
the Form 0,1,2,3 buttons from the tool bar. Non-standard tunings do not
contain these built-in chords, but full use of the Neck Window functions
are supported (see below).
In standard tuning, Form 0 chords are available for Major, Minor, and
Dominant 7th chord forms and are generally the open or common forms of the
chord. Form 1 chords generally have the root on the 4th string. Form 2
chords generally have the root on the 3th string, and Form 3 chords
generally have the root on the 2nd string.

* ReWrite 0.2.7 changes:
- powerful new functions using function pointers (Map, Apply ... )
- an expanded manual, including a 'getting started' section
- docs now done with eDoc
- several bugs fixed (including a fatal one with project management)
The main features of ReWrite are:
* it uses the syntax of rewrite rules to define functions;
* it has the non-destructive attributes of a functional language, in
that there are no side effects (except such things as screen output);
* it has no 'eval' mechanism, so is a purely eager language (like Pascal/C);
* it compiles to moderately efficient 68020/68030 machine code;
* in the compiler, rules are interleaved, so similar rules execute quickly;
* it is strongly but dynamically typed - types may be checked at runtime;
* it is in a sense a minimal language - it only has a simple syntax;
* although making extensive use of lists, it neither has not requires any
garbage collection mechanism - all functions clean up after themselves;
