Subject: [*] CommuniGate Client 1.9

The CommuniGator application is the client part of the CommuniGate integrated
messaging system. It allows you to work with all your messages: e-mail, fax,
voice, pager, etc.

You can use it on the same computer the CommuniGate server is installed on,
and you can install and use it on other computers connected to the server via
network.

The CommuniGate User Manual explains how you can use the CommuniGator
application as your messaging environment. It provides information about:
- message composing;
- address books;
- mailboxes;
- operations on messages;
- miscellaneous CommuniGator features;

CommuniGator is used to manage the CommuniGate Server, too: to configure the
server itself or the modules it runs, to control the modules and their queues,
etc. The CommuniGate System Manual explains how you can use the CommuniGator
application to maintain your CommuniGate Server.

See the CommuniGate Installation Manual for installation instructions.

Revision History:
1.9
* The Processing Rules (User Rules and Station Rules) are implemented (you need
the 1.9 version of the Server to support User Rules).
* The Mailer design has been changed.

Subject: [*] CommuniGate FaxGate 1.8

The FaxGate is a CommuniGate communication module supporting fax messaging.
It converts messages to the fax format and sends them to remote fax
machines. The module can receive incoming faxes and route them as messages
to the recipient(s).
The module is multi-line, i.e. it can support several fax lines
simultaneously.
When installed together with the Voice Gate, FaxGate can route incoming faxes
to any recipient (locally or over e-mail), it can implement fax-on-demand and
other fax-center features.

This version of FaxGate supports Class 2 and Class 2.0 fax modems connected
via serial ports.

To compose and send messages as faxes, you can use not only the CommuniGator
application, but also the print driver "FaxSender".

Revision History
1.8
*?The Default Font Style option is implemented.
* The Resolution option for FaxGate fax converting is implemented. Some bugs
in processing documents with parts in different resolutions were fixed.
* The bug that always disabled international calls for non-local users was
fixed.

1.7
*?The Default Font and the Default Font Size options are implemented.
* The resolution selection command is issued before dialing now: it provides
compatibility with many modems that do not follow the Class 2 specifications.

Subject: [*] CommuniGate FaxSender 2.0

FaxSender is a print (Chooser) driver to use with the CommuniGate System. It
employs the same Address Books panel as the CommuniGator application, and it
can be used with any application that supports printing. When "FaxSender" is
selected in the Chooser, using the Print command in any application results
in "printing" of the open document on a remote fax machine.

In order to avoid switching between your regular printer driver and FaxSender,
you can have the "FaxSwitcher" extension installed. After you installed
FaxSwitcher, select the FaxSender in the Chooser, and you'll see the Option
button which allows you to set the special-keys combination. You can set a
combination, select your regular printer driver again, and close the Chooser.

Now, if you press the selected key combination when choosing Page Setup or
Print from an application File menu, the FaxSender driver replaces your
regular printer driver and allows you to fax from an application without
going through the Chooser.

There are two versions of the print driver: a non-networkable (FaxSender)
and a networkable one (FaxSender Network). If you plan to send faxes from
the same computer that runs the CommuniGate Server, you should install the
FaxSender driver on that computer. Install the FaxSender Network on all other
computers on your network.

* Retrieving address records from shared (server-based) address books is
implemented. The CommuniGate Client Modules version 1.9 or better is required.

Subject: [*] CommuniGate PagerGate 1.2.2

The PagerGate is a CommuniGate communication module supporting wireless
paging. The module uses one or several regular modems. It calls host
computers of paging service companies and transfers the messages along
with the recipients' pager IDs. The host computers then deliver the
messages to the recipients' pagers.
As any other CommuniGate module, PagerGate can be used even if you don't
have it installed on your computer or network: you can use any other
CommuniGate Server with PagerGate via Internet (see below).

Since there are many companies providing paging service, and each company
uses its own pager IDs, you need to know two things in order to send a
message to somebody's pager: the ID of that pager, and also the name of
the paging service provider.

The PagerGate module supports the TAP protocol (used by US paging services),
it is multi-line, and it supports connections with several paging hosts.

Revision History
1.2.2
* The protocol reliability is improved.

1.2.1
* An "uninitilized variable" bug is fixed. On some machines, it caused
the PagerGate to report that the CommuniGate Server is too old.
* Hosts icons have been fixed.

Subject: [*] CommuniGate Server 1.9

The kernel part of the CommuniGate integrated messaging system is the
CommuniGate Server. When installed, it runs in background and:
* stores all messages sent and received;
* enables network access for CommuniGate users, maintains their mailboxes
queues, etc.;
* loads and runs CommuniGate modules (i.e. FaxGate, UUCPGate, VoiceGate,
etc.) and creates the run-time environment for those modules;
* maintains system activity log;
* implements routing algorithms;
* maintains a resource database and provides access to that database for
CommuniGate users and CommuniGate modules (fax cover pages, sounds, voice
scripts, info tables, etc.).

The CommuniGate services can be accessed with the CommuniGator client
software. The client software allows you to compose and read messages,
to manage your mailboxes, etc. It is also used by CommuniGate administrator
to configure, maintain, monitor and control the CommuniGate server -
locally or remotely.

This version:
1.9
*?The User Rules are implemented. This allows the server to process mail
automatcially, base of the "rules" specified by each user.

this browser is to provide quick access to the preffered personal catalog
(or any other container of catalog entries) while using the application.
The selected catalog, as well as the browser's position, are stored in the
preferences.
Tip: If the WindowShade control panel (standard in System 7.5) is
installed, you can avoid time-consuming redraws of the catalog's content
(notably when it is in the background) by double-clicking on its title bar.

rid of the "Sent by CTM PowerMail" plug at the end of sent messages. The
- NEW FEATURE ! We now support sound within a letter. Sound can be recorded
>From the Edit menu or dragged in (from the Scrapbook, for instance). Note:
This feature requires the presence of Sound manager 3.1
- Now supports and includes Internet config 1.2; Internet config extension
gets installled or updated with CTM Powermail
- Fixed a refresh bug at bottom of text view
- Because of a change in the reply settings, the previous version
introduced an issue with formatting of reply text. This has been fixed.
- Remove line breaks now scrolls the text to the top (since it usually
reduces the number of lines, often after this operation one would think
everything has been erased
- Error codes are now correctly reported by number rather than always
showing up as -50.
- Opening a letter in the out tray (notably, letter with AppleMail creator)
could occasionaly throw PM in an infinite loop
- Fixed a condition which could induce garbled characters at the end of a
message.

Subject: [*] LineShare 3.3.1

The LineShare (tm) software makes it possible for several
applications/tools to use the same serial port(s) simultaneously. It can
detect the type of incoming calls and route the call to the proper
software. For fax modems, LineShare can employ the "adaptive answering"
feature supported with many modern modems, i.e. the automatic detection of
the incoming call type (fax or data).

Generally, LineShare can be used with any modem and with any types of
incoming calls, if there is a method to detect the type of a call. Those
methods (algorithms) are programmed using the LineShare scripting language.

When started, LineShare takes the selected serial port and controls that
port itself, running the selected LineShare script. It also creates several
"subports" and register them with CTB, so their names and icons appear in
port lists of CTB-compatible applications/tools. These virtual subports are
for use with communication servers. The number and names of subports to be
created are defined in the LineShare script.

When a server (like ARA(tm), or FaxSTF(tm), BBS, or Mail) opens such a
"subPort", LineShare emulates a modem without connecting the server to the
real device. So, several servers can work simultaneously, each sending
commands to its own dedicated subport.

Subject: [*] NetPresenz 4.0.1 (formerly FTPd)

This is a major new upgrade for FTPd, it now has full support for Web CGI
scripts and native Open Transport. Because FTPd is much more than just an
FTP server, we've renamed it to NetPresenz which more acurately represents
it's functionality - with a single program you or your company can now use
a Macintosh to provide a high profile presence on the Internet including
FTP, Web and Gopher, all for just a $10 shareware fee.

NetPresenz uses the Apple's standard file sharing permissions under either
Personal File Sharing (7.5.1 or later highly recomended) or AppleShare, so
it is easy to configure and very secure.

Changes since NetPresenz 4.0 include:

Fixed a security hole where people can get anonymous access to AppleShare
guest files even if you have selected "None" for anonymous FTP privs.

Changes since FTPd 3.0 include:

New name - NetPresenz.
Open Transport support.
CGI script support.

And a few of other changes and tweaks.

NetPresenz requires System 7 and MacTCP or Open Transport.

NetPresenz is $10 shareware. The upgrade is free to everyone who
registered after Jan 1, 1995. If you registered before then, the upgrade
is 50% of the normal price.

Enjoy,
Peter

Everybody's using Netscape. Why not - it's a great prog. Yet, like any
other program, details need to be tweaked to your specs and needs. The
splash screen for instance. I guess the ship steering wheel could appeal to
the "pirate" hacker in all of us, but more likely it brings to mind that
weird guy in the raincoat on the fish sticks commercial: "Ahoy there,
little Billy! Climb up the ladder ahead of me!"

So here's a new splash screen. Based on the "memento mori" ("Remember, you
will die") philosophy of living life to the fullest, it portrays a lively
skull graphic -not as many shiny colours as some s/s's, but I dig it. It
requires ResEdit to install. It's unofficial, of course, but I don't see
how the Netscape folx would mind as it's a personal/one time addition. (But
I will hasten to mention that I have no connenction in any way with
Netscape, nor they with me. ) I will also be doing a so-called "throbber"
(spare me the obvious puns please). This will consist of an dazzling
image/animation to replace the "N & shooting stars" animation in the corner
of the browser.

If you'd like to see any other additions, or have any ideas regarding,

Subject: [*] Newswatcher 2.1.2; a free Usenet newsreader for the Mac

Errors fixed
NewsWatcher did not work with news servers which required authentication
if you had the option to use Internet Config turned on and the option to
save the authentication password turned off. Fixed.

You can now drag groups as text from group windows to the bodies and
other text fields of message windows.

The log file generated by the "Log actions to file" option in the
"Miscellaneous Options" prefs topic contained LF line terminators
instead of the proper CR line terminators. Fixed.

The low-level networking code now discards server response lines which
do not begin with a numeric response code. These lines are treated as
comments. In particular, this change fixes a problem which can occur
with some Mac "FTPd" servers.

The low-level networking code no longer caches the Mac's IP address or
domain name. It gets this information fresh from MacTCP or Open
Transport every time it needs it. This will help in some situations
where dialup users disconnect and reconnect and get a new IP address and
keep NewsWatcher open throughout this process. This will not, however,
solve all problems with this kind of situation, and proper behavour of
NewsWatcher in this situation simply cannot be guaranteed. We still
highly recommend that you quit NewsWatcher before disconnecting and
reconnecting and rerun it after reconnecting.

Because of its shared orientation, SiteMarker is particularly useful
in workplace and educational settings, where collaboration is
imperative. SiteMarker is also a boon to WebMasters and HTML
designers due to it's unparalelled support for HTML authoring. URL
catalogs can be outputted as stunning Web pages with full control
over colors and font sizes, as well as banner, bullet and background
graphics. Full Web sites can be created from the URL catalogs of
individual users, or groups, with no HTML coding required.

In SiteMarker, as users navigate, they organize URLs in topical
catalogs (eg, News, Sports, Art, Search Engines) that can be thought
of as "virtual road maps" to bodies of Web information. The software
allows notes of any length to be attached to any element of a URL
catalog. These notes are interactively displayed in Sitemarker, so
that at all times textual information is readily available, and
seamlessly integrated into HTML output.

Organizing and authoring information is of course dependent on what
information is available. SiteMarker provides features that allow
users to find and bring back Web information much faster. The
software has an integrated search palette that allows quick access
to major Web search facilities, software archives, and online
references. SiteMarker also lets users "extract" all of the URLs
directly from Web pages without needing to individually visit them,
making it easy to rapidly augment URL collections.

Subject: (Q) Another PageMaker 6 spelling checker problem

Here's another PM6 spelling checker problem. Sometimes it gets "stuck." In
the following sentence, from a short story by Borges, it gets stuck on the
"m" in "may, " suggesting it is a capitalization error. Nothing can make it
move on. Clicking after the troublesome word and trying to continue results
in PM starting at the beginning of the story and getting stuck at the
trouble spot again. Since there is no way to predict what the "next" story
is in PM's arcane spell-checking agenda, I can't just skip the rest of the
story and go on to the next one. If I knew what it was, I would. I'm not
about to change Borges' style to suite this brain-damaged spell-checker.

have been thousands of years ago!-may have examined and read it."

Subject: (Q) PageMaker 6 spellchecking

I'm trying to use PageMaker 6 spelling checker to check a book-length
manuscript composed of many (approx 150) Word 5.1 documents. I've checked
them already with Word, but I find PageMaker is catching things I missed
earlier. However, it's driving me crazy. It seems to check the documents in
a mysterious order of its own, neither in page order nor alphabetical
order. If I am interrupted before checking the whole volume and have to
shut down (and I always am) I can't force it to systematically check the
stories that haven't been already checked.

Also frustrating is the fact that when I find an error that can't be fixed
within the spelling checker and click on the document to fix it, then
return to the spelling checker, it goes back to the beginning of the
document and starts checking it all over again. For a text loaded with
proper names and arcane terms like mine this is very frustrating.

Also, PageMaker's handling of Word's footnotes is crude, to say the least.
It just makes the reference numbers into simple superscripted numbers which
the spelling checker interprets as part of the word so it pauses at every
entry like this: (Athens2). Every footnoted word is a possible error.

I'm mostly just venting my spleen, but if anybody has workarounds (short of
telling me to abandon my software at this point in the project, which is
out of the question), I'd be interested in hearing them.

Localtalk after saying it cant change to Ethertalk)

I've installed the Z.M 1.5 updated Network drivers which
includes

Ethertalk Phase 2 2.5.7 (Extension)

Network B1-7.1.3 (Control Panel)

Apple built-in Ethernet 1.0.1 (Extension)

but this hasnt helped.

Has anyone experienced similar problems getting an Mac with builtin
Ethernet , running 7.5.1 , to get the Ethernet running Ethertalk

Any info, experience with this problem would be very welcome

Thanks

Well, it would be more accurate to say, "How happy for us all that RAM
Doubler works so well!" I wonder if you are taking the name "RAM Doubler"
too literally. RAM Doubler does several things, the sum total of which we
users interpret as twice as much RAM. More accurately RAM Doubler is a
memory *manager* (and a darn good one, at that). RAM Doubler works best in
situations when you want to open several programs at the same time. With
RAM Doubler you can easily open programs that total as much as twice the
amount of RAM you have, SO LONG AS NO SINGLE PROGRAM USES MORE THAN YOUR
TOTAL "REAL" RAM. The "doubling" of RAM here is arbitrary, but the folks at
Connectix feel it is optimal. It does *not* magically give you twice as
much RAM. Therefore, it cannot give you (just as magically) four times as
much or 16 times as much RAM.

In extreme situations, RAM Doubler will invoke virtual memory -- a trick
in which your (slow!) hard drive is used to supplement your (fast!) RAM.
This almost always results in a huge performance hit. By "Pumping" your RAM
Doubler to higher values you are increasing RAM Doubler's reliance on
virtual memory. This is probably not what you are after.

If you are trying to "Pump" your RAM merely as a stunt (amaze your
friends!), then more power to you. However, if you are trying to make up
for insufficient real RAM, then RAM Doubler is not the answer.

Cheers,
Clint

Subject: New Extension Conflict

I hope this is helpful to some of you...

I have a PowerBook 5300c and just installed the latest system update to System
7.5.2 and System Enabler 1.2.1. After this Word 6.0.1 started crashing whenever
Save As... was selected and frequently when a file was opened.

I tracked the problem down to a conflict between the extension "Office 4.2x
Update for Power Mac" and the new system software. (Don't ask how long this
took!) It seems that the new system software corrects the same problem that
Office Update does and they conflict. Everything seems to work fine if Office
Update is disabled.

My suspicion is that when System Update 2.0 is released (soon, I hope), it will
have the correction and the Office Update extension will not only not be
necessary, but will cause problems. Anyone know if this will be true?

" We recently upgraded to Sys 7.5, the latest

I don't think it's a problem with System 7.5. For example, PopChar works
fine with Nisus and Word 5 under System 7.5. On the other hand, it has
never worked with FrameMaker, and I am told that the reason has to do with
how FM handles fonts. Frame Technology insisted on handling them in a
non-standard way "to preserve compatibility with FM on other platforms",
whatever that means (we hope Adobe will see matters in a different light).
I bet it's the same thing with Word and WP.

An alternative to PopChar, not nearly as convenient but still freeware and
better than KeyCaps, is Letraset's Character Chooser. If it isn't in the
archives, try Some time ago Gunther Blaschek
(sp?) was promising a commercial version of PopChar which would work around
the FrameMaker problem, and presumably the others. But I haven't seen
anything of this yet.
