Subject: [*] AppleShare 3.6.1 Patch

(c)1996 Connectix Corporation

Connectix has identified a problem with AppleShare 3.6.1 that occurs when
copying from an AppleShare volume. The problem can lead to a system crash
or file corruption of copied files. This has been independently identified
by Apple. Since a fix will not be available for an undetermined amount of
time, Connectix is distributing this patch as a fix for users of AppleShare
3.6.1.

The enclosed Read Me file contains requirements and other information
regarding AppleShare 3.6.1 Patch.

If, after reading the Read Me file, you still have questions about this
patch, please address them to "[email protected]".

* What is it ? *

Collect HTML is an XTension for XPress 3.1 or higher that allows you to convert
text from Quark pages into HTML format.

- Styles can be converted into HTML pre- and suffixes.
- Collect creates interlaced GIF, JPEG or PICT previews from Quark pages or
from
text or picture boxes.
- You can put links to local or remote URL's on selected text from within
Quark;
these links are stored within the Quark document for subsequent collections.

Collect is not well suited to convert complete Quark pages; it better for
'clipping' articles from large pages (e.g. a newspaper) for Web publication.

HTML is not as rich in features as Quark is, so do not expect a WYSIWIG
behaviour in HTML. Collect just tries to help you to create good-looking HTML
documents from Quark pages.

The demo version time limited in a few ways: it is usable until June 31,1996,
and each time disables itself 5 minutes after startup of Quark. The demo
version also has the GIF support removed.

Commercial availability of non-demo versions is not determined yet - version
1.3.2 is released only for demo purposes, and should be considered a beta
version. Send me an e-mail inquiring about future availability.

Subject: [*] ComboBox

The idea behind ComboBox is to provide an easy way for users to choose an
item from a list. 4th Dimension provides Choice Lists for this purpose,
but the current implementation has several problems.

ComboBox addresses these user-related problems while providing a
programming interface that allows the area to adapt to practically any look
and feel the designer wishes.

This package contains two copies of ComboBox. ComboBox.Lib uses the
drag-and-drop, platform-independent extension architecture, and requires
4th Dimension 3.2.5 or greater or 4D Client and 4D Server 1.2.5 or greater.
ComboBox.Ext can be installed using the 4D External Mover, and is for use
with versions of 4th Dimension prior to 3.2.5. Both copies of ComboBox
require System 7.0 or greater.

NOTE: It is extremely important that you do not include both copies of
ComboBox for use with the same structure. You should either install
ComboBox.Ext using the 4D External Mover, or install ComboBox.Lib by
dragging it into the Mac4DX folder, but not both.

Subject: [*] CyberPunk Begginning Beep! (stereo)

Yes! The long awaited third RICKSOUND is here!

This sound is in no way a parody of Jeff Click's STEREMANIAC sound in the
InfoMac sound conference.

It begins with an ominous "It is begginning", which is then overlayed and
embellished using -you guessed it- a VERY SPECIAL STEREO TECHNIQUE - what
follows is an unbelievably complex montage of voices- chanting two main
messages- then a very HardCore NIN style hyper amplified subliminal message,
then finally a simple BUT STRANGELY HAUNTING 'it has begun' to finish. I was
in tears when I finally mixed this sound down- I hope you will be too.

And remember- if tears don't come easily- money can.

I want to be rich. Please help me!

Subject: [*] DOS Prep 1.0

In version 1.0, DOS=DDPrep raises all file names to upper case letters, so
that they can be read on CD-ROMs intended for both Mac and PC=DDplatforms.

DOS=DDPrep is scriptable and can process whole folders and volumes at one
time, converting all folders, volumes, and file names to uppercase letters.

Why do I=DDneed DOS Prep / Who is it for?

CD-ROMs can be made for use with both Macintosh and PCs. However, for the
PCs to be able to see the files, they need to be uppercase. If you are
creating a CD-ROM=DDintended for both platforms, this utility will allow you
to quickly convert your existing files to uppercase letters. The current
version of DOS=DDPrep does not conform file names to the DOS 8.3 naming
convention, though future versions will.

Minimum requirements: System 7.1

MacTypingTutorial is an inexpensive Macintosh sharware program that teaches
typing skills, in English. It uses five integrated work areas that together
teach correct finger placement and "touch-typing" memory of the keys on the
keyboard. Practice materials include: single letters, letter & number
sequences, words, sentences, paragraphs, and free typing. The program
offers a spelling checker, user-defined speed goals, score sheets, time
tracking with rest-signals, and many other helpful features. It comes in a
regular version (enclosed), a junior version and a special version
(Dvorak). Non-English versions under development. Users can devise their
own session-routines, by working in one or more of the modules for ten to
fifteen minutes each.

Attached is a quick, albeit attractive, FM hack

and FileMaker 3.0.

There is limited help and it is sort of a
"figure it out as you go" type of file. I think
you will find it quite useful for collecting

these things and more.

1. Collect URL addresses and their page titles
2. Jump to URL addresses from the FM database
(thank you Joel & Claris)
3. Prompt for keywords associated to the
web site.

If you would like to modify the database to

I don't know, but... when an app gets put into the background, it is
responsible for translating the contents of the clipboard (which might
be in some special internal format) into one of the standard MacOS
formats. It would be easy to add text at the same time, and that's one
way it could be done. This is just one of several things that
well-behaved programs have to do when put into the background (others
include restoring cursors, etc).

Hope this helps-

I recommend calling Claris...they are willing to sell to schools at very
nice prices...you do have to buy one CW 4.0 (~$50) to get one CW 3.0 ($29),
but you then have TWO legal licenses for a SUPER integrated package that
includes WP, SS, Drawing, Painting, DB, comms and more. 4.0 will not work
on the SE, but 3.0 should work just fine.

In the U.S., call (800) 544-8554, extension 311.

Make sure Mom-in-Law lets them know she is from an educational institution!!
She also needs to specify what format she wants CW in...800K or 1.4M.

Subject: ADVICE NEEDED: Problems With MacsBug

I have recently installed MacsBug 6.5.2 on my Quadra 700 - largely in order
to provide
me with a safe method of 'graceful exit' in the event of crashes. Although
MB catches
many crashes I have also encountered three kinds of behaviour which are not
mentioned
in such MB literature as I have been able to get my hands on:
(1) Crashes or hangs which are *not* intercepted by MB.
(2) MB is triggered and the stdlog command causes the log to scroll.
However the
log does not proceed to the "Closing log' message but reaches a point where
hitting
return causes the last few lines to repeat indefinitely. The RS, RB etc
commands
do not function, usually - though not always - giving the message 'Unable
to access
that address'.The only method of exit is to restart the computer.
(3) MB is triggered and the stdlog command produces a log which terminates
properly. However the RS, RB etc commands do not function - as in (2) - and
the only method of exit is to restart the computer.

As a non-techie I find these events rather worrying. Can anyone tell me
what is going
on here and - particularly - whether it has any serious implications for
the health of
my computer?

Subject: Beginner Programming- a summary

Thans to all the people that replied to my earlier posting regarding the
best programming language to start with. There were a few obvious trends in
the messages that I was getting:

1: Scripting (eg Applescript and others) was becoming a force in the realm
of 'legitimate' programming languages

2: Hypercard and Supercard are still perenial favourites with a lot of people

3: Avoid 'the third letter in the alphabet' as a beginning programming language

4: The freeware Prograph (in info-mac's ftp site) was probably my bets
option if I wanted to avoid the above.

I'd be interested to hear if anyone has any further ideas regarding
programming for beginners as there are obviously a few people out there
that would benefit from this (same position as myself)

Once again thanks for the replies

Subject: Desktop icons...???

I have seen millions of posts come across these pages asking for icon
problem assistance..here's one more.

About two weeks ago, I started having problems with some icons turning
generic on me. At the same time, my DESKTOP file started becoming visible
in the top level of my main HD. If/When I chuck that file and/or rebuild
my desktop, things return to normal but only for a short time...then they
revert back. I've used both TechTool and the keyboard commands. No
difference.

I've rebuilt my desktop numerous times over the course of the past week
or two and the problem continues. I've used NDD and my disks checked out
fine except for my "DESKTOP" file having bad modification and creation
dates. I'm assuming there is a connection, obviously.

I recently added a new external HD to my 6115 and I also have a separate
system file on there although I don't know if that setup is problematic
at all. The icons that continually change are the ones from programs on
that new drive (soft windows 2, xRES 2, Strata, Now...etc...)

I'm at a loss now. I don't think this is an extension conflict because it
doesn't seem to smell of one but...I don't know. All I know is that
everytime I open up my HD to see that damn "DESKTOP" file, a horrible
sadness runs through my body. I don't like unsolved mysteries on my mac.

I'm running 7.5.1 with 16mb/RamDoubler/Spd Doubler and a slew of
extensions.

Any ideas will, of course, be appreciated. Hoping to solve this dilemma...

Subject: Help with Files ending with .crh

I have downloaded several files that end with .crh.
I'm on a Mac (LCIII).
What do I need to be able to use these files?

Thanks,
Ronnie

I don't remember if it has been mentioned here on Info-Mac either
but it sure has been said pretty often since Netscape 2.0 came
out. What Netscape say about it is (from "Known
Incompatibilities"):

>Open Transport
>
>Netscape Navigator=81 2.0 will not work reliably with versions of
>Open Transport before 1.1. Users may experience unpredictable
>hangs or crashes.
>
>Users of machines which require Open Transport, but who have a
>version earlier than 1.1, should >upgrade to 1.1 as soon as it
>becomes available to them.

I thought that somewhat odd since I had successfully used several
beta versions with Open Transport 1.0.8 and decided to try it in
spite of the warning. As I had found with the betas it was
necessary to increase the memory partition but after doing that
I've had no problems with this combination. The operative word in
the quote from the Netscape document above is probably *may*:
"Users may experience unpredictable hangs or crashes." Well, I
haven't and I know that there are others with OT 1.0.8 who haven't
had any problems either. However, some users have reported crashes
so some caution is probably in order.

It has also been said repeatedly that Netscape 2.0 is incompatible
with MacTCP (Richard didn't here). Can anyone tell me/us the
origin of that statement?

About the memory partition: In my experience Netscape 2.0 needs
another meg on a PowerMac, more if you add plug-ins. As usual,
your mileage might vary. I don't use Virtual Memory or RAM
Doubler, Modern Memory Manager is--of course--on, PM 7500.

Subject: Patching snd resource to make it louder: possible? how?

Hello, Mac addicts!

I have a nice "init" that plays a sound upon startup. Tha sound is actually a
resource of the "init" itself, so theoretically it can be tampered with by
ResEdit. Now, I would like to hear a much louder sound than it presently comes
out, but I still want my Mac to produce low-volume alerts and warning sounds
during the normal work. So I am asking myself: is it possible to "patch" that
sound resource so to have it played louder, while keeping the general sound
volume setting as it stands? Do I absolutely need a sound editor? Ciao (=bye),

Subject: PCWorld reviews 32-bit OSs

PCWorld is not my usual reading matter, but the Feb issues of PCWorld and
MacWorld carry a comparison of the main 32-bit OSs, Windows, Mac, and OS/2. I
was interested to see the PCWorld article because I always like to see the
view from the other side, and I think it's well worth reading.

Here are some tidbits:

* The Mac edged out Win95 in user-friendliness, but not by much.

* While Macs have an edge in graphics, they lag behind Win95 in text processing
speed (could it be because the application they tested on the Mac was Word
7?).

* Win95's interface bears "a striking resemblance to both the Mac OS and OS/2",
and "One measure of the Macintosh interface's success is the degree to which
both Windows 95 and OS/2 Warp mimic it." Hm, looks the Microsoft boys have done
some serious research.

* The MacOS's main shortcomings are limited multitasking, few bundled
utilities,
and the fact that "the Mac OS itself is still primarily engineered for the
680x0 processor" and "can't harness the PowerPC's true performance."

One quote from a Mac user I could agree with: "the Mac's biggest enemy is not
Microsoft or Intel, but Apple itself. From lax marketing campaigns to critical
product shortages, the company is constantly dropping the ball."

Finally, on page 156 there's a sidebar entitled "Desktops of Tomorrow".
Inside: a screenshot of Copland! In PC World. Nice accolade, eh? Now, if only
Apple got its act together and shipped Copland on time...

Which version of PopChar are you using? I have PopChar 2.5.2 with System
7.5.1 on my Performa 6300 and it works fine.

Doug,
I have had an interesting experience with popchar...
I have three machines, a Quadra 800 (with Daystar 100 MHz PPC card, running
7.5.1) at work, a PowerBook 170 (running Sys. 7.1) and an LC III (running
7.5.1). PopChar works with the two former, but not with the LC III. Well, it
does work...but if I insert a DOS formatted floppy or Zip disk, I get an
immediate lock up requiring shutting off the computer and then turning it back
on. The three-fingered salute will NOT restart the machine. I can either remove
popchar or remove PC Exchange. I removed Popchar, as I have most of the
keystrokes memorized at this point, and I can always turn around and use the
PowerBook if I get stumped. I printed out (using TypeBook, another great
freebie) keycap tables for all my dingbat fonts.

As I have pretty much the same extensions on the Quadra and LC III I was very
surprised at this.

As an aside, Popchar will not work with MS Word 6.0 because Word doesn't use a
standard font menu.

IMHO, PopChar is one of the half-dozen or so most indispensable util-
ities in the Mac world (and that includes freeware, shareware and
commercialware). I've used it on every Mac we've had since our SE/30.
It's one of those things like Disinfectant that I just install as a
matter of course when setting up a new machine.

Gunther Blaschek has been making this wonderful app available FREE
for years, and probably hearing very little in the way of thanks for
it. So, I'd like to express a heartfelt "thank you" to Mr. Blaschek,
along with my hope that he'll be able to keep PopChar viable as OSs
come and go. I'd be more than happy to pay a shareware fee for it,
if this would help. Or, alternatively, I hope Apple gets in touch
with this man, pays him a reasonable fee, and incorporates PopChar
in future versions of the Mac OS.

Just my handful-of-small-denomination-change worth.

Subject: Serial Port Problem Solved

Hi,

I recently mentioned having problems with the modem port on my
Performa 5300. It appeared to be a software problem: an extension
called "External CD Sound" (at least, that's how it translates from
Dutch) caused the problem. If someone at Apple reads this: what's the
use of this extension, and why was it included on my disk?

Anyway, thanks to everyone who replied,

Depending on the quality and quantity of the wordprocessing jobs she's
going to do, she could probably use at least for certain things a text
editor **and** a spellchecker combination. I suggest you take a look at
using TextEdit 1.6.3 (Shareware, $ 5) in combination with Excalibur (I
believe freeware). Both are available from Info-Mac.
Also, I would check the mail order catalogs and Usenet newsgroups.
Sometimes they offer software -limited quantities, clearence items, used
software...- for really reduced prices.
I hope this helps!
