Subject: [*] Fonts_Manager_158
Fonts Manager(tm) is functionally similar to the System 7.5.x Extensions
Manager. It allows the importing, viewing, enabling, and disabling of font
suitcases in 'Sets' and supports Balloon help. Unlike other utilities, such
as Suitcase(tm) and Master Juggler(tm), it works on ALL Macs with System 7.5
or later, without interfering with the normal operation of your computer.
Have over 450 testimonials from customers with PCI-based PowerMacs running
System 7.5.2 that have switched to Fonts Manager to get their businesses back
'Up & Running'. Also, have over 200 from users of older Macs, who just can't
stand to use Suitcase any longer, and have instead switched to Fonts Manager.
NEW: Revised the ' Fonts (Managed)' alias routine.
Supports the following options: a Help menu, Balloon Help throughout, IMPORT
fonts from folders/disks other than the Fonts folder, Export 'Sets' feature
for update to newer version, automatic installation, set replacement,
alphabetical font lists, Preferences menu for broad customization including
adding an alias of the Fonts folder to the Apple Menu, adjustable color
settings in most windows, indefinite registration period, international MacOS
support (US, Bulgarian, Danish, Dutch, French, German, Hungarian, Italian,
Kanji, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, and
Turkish in this version), and multiple licensing options.
Also available @ ,

Subject: [*] Knot 3.4 - abstract 3-D graphics designer
Knot lets you create large 3-D color animations and stills of
beautiful abstract knots. You design the knot's form, colors, motion,
backgrounds and lighting - or design and render entire animations
automatically. It's an endless source of gorgeous moving backgrounds and
photocollage elements for your work.
* Easy to use: knots will design themselves if you want, or you can exert
fine control
* Exports standard QuickTime and TIFF files
* Fast background rendering: still pictures in a few minutes,
animations in a half-hour
* Create red/blue 3D stereograms with one click. 3D movies too!
* Beautiful graphic interface
Knots are 3-D abstract shapes which many people say look "something
like intestines", but MacFormat magazine says "Design fantastic,
beautiful images on your Mac with this easy to use graphics program. With
a wealth of options to stretch your artistic talent, the program produces
its wonderful creations in just minutes."
Version 3.4 has high resolution, new lighting effects, more 3-D, more
examples, and more speed. Multiple colored light sources illuminate
curved, segmented, glowing, buckled, iridescent, and segmented strands,
with animated previews, all in 24-bit poster-size color.
Knot requires a color Macintosh; System 7 or later; QuickTime for
making animations; and at least 6MB memory (8MB recommended). You can use
your creations with any paint program or movie player.

Subject: [*] SetSoundVolume 1.5.3
How do you change your Mac's sound level? By going to the sound control
panel, right? By exiting whatever you are doing, going to the control panels
folder, finding the right thing, and then setting it. Well, suppose you're
in the middle of a game. Then what? Your boss is coming in... Then what?
The solution is SetSoundVolume, which is the simplest way to change the sound
level. And this version has been supercharged to allow use of the Function
keys, F1-F8 (and still allow other programs to use F1-F8!), to set the sound
level. F7 sets it to 7. No exiting, no nothing. Just pure simplicity.
SetSoundVolume is shareware, but compared with the number of times you'll use
it, the cost is extremely minimal. Imagine doing a routine task by hitting
just one key! You can completely customize the program, a control panel, as
well.
However you use your Mac, SetSoundVolume will make using it easier. Many
registered users have asked me why Apple didn't include something this good
with their computer. Until they do, there's SetSoundVolume.
This version, 1.5.3, fixes a little bug in 1.5 that disabled part of
SetSoundVolume's functionality.

Subject: [*] SimpleBackup - file backup utility
SimpleBackup is a very simple file backup utility. I wrote it because I
wanted a quick-and-easy way to back up all those files that are spread
out over the hard disk, in the preferences folder, in the documents
folder, certain folders and files in the applications folder, etc... I
decided that I didn't want to write a user interface for the utility, so
I got the idea of letting the Finder do the work for me by using aliases.
The result is a backup program that is actually easy to use! You simply
navigate through your hard disk and find the files or entire folders that
you want to backup that are buried in the System Folder, Applications,
Documents folders etc., and tell SimpleBackup about those files/folders
by using aliases.
SimpleBackup is "ThankYouWare". If you find it useful,
all you have to do is say "thank you."

Subject: [*] Stereo "Galaxy Beep"
The "Galaxy Beep" is another beep from the Clixsounds collection of
original sound files for Macs.
The beep is a short, punctual sound that makes a great alternative to
normal Mac System Beep Sounds. It begins with a very intense blast of a
stereo siren-like sound that tails off strongly to the right, as a heavy
bass background harmonizes with it, fading out as the quick echoing ceases.
The "Galaxy Beep" is available in both 16 and 8-bit stereo formats and
can be downloaded here or at the Clixsounds WWW site at

When clicking on a file to download, rather than clicking on the link
directly, click and hold down the mouse button. A pop-up menu will appear.
Select "save link as..." from the popup. Once you select where you want
to save the file, a separate window will appear showing the download
status.
This allows you to download directly to disk and bypass Netscape's memory.
That way you won't run out of memory when downloading. It will also, as an
added bonus, allow you to download (multiple) files in the background while
continuing your web surfing.

The problem is actually with the ~AudioVision extension. It doesn't seem
to work with Display Manager 2.0. I would recommend hassling them for a

Figured this discussion is a good lead-in to a question that has plagued our
office for a few weeks now. We recently upgraded to Sys 7.5, the latest
Microsoft suite, WordPerfect (may it live forever - are you listening, Corel?),
and ClarisDraw. We're all disappointed to find that a most useful utility,
PopChar, no longer works. Fully, that is - it seems limited to Geneva and an
occasional Monaco, no matter what font we're actually currently using. PopChar
would provide an instant answer to the 'pound sign' problem, and is
indispensable for anyone using any dingbats and any fonts that may not have
full character sets, non-standard characters, etc.
Have we missed an update to Gunther Blaschek's most excellent (FREE!)
program, does anyone know about system conflicts in 7.5 that blurp PopChar,
or are there any other clues out there??
Many thanx in advance, both from myself and the local office.

Since you are using a PCI-based power mac, MacTCP will not work.
You>need to use the TCP/IP control panel which comes with Open Transport.
In order to use Open Transport properly with PPP, you need to update to
Open Transport 1.0.7 or greater. Currently, OT 1.0.8 is available at
Apple's ftp site (ftp.support.apple.com). Open Transport 1.1 will be out
soon. A beta version of 1.1 is circulating in various places.
In addition, Open Transport does not work with most versions of MacPPP.
To my knowledge, it will only work with the "SD" versions of MacPPP like
MacPPP 2.1.1SD. It also works with the latest versions of FreePPP. Both
of these PPP versions (MacPPP SD and FreePPP) are available at InfoMac.
I had similar problems myself and I fixed them by getting Open Transport
1.0.8 and MacPPP2.1.1SD. Good luck!

If you can discuss any of these issues, please send email directly

Subject: External and Internal Hard Drives
Gentle Mac Users:
I recently purchased a 1 Gig external hard drive to connect with my Quadra
650 (230 MB internal hard drive, 20 Mb Ram, system 7.1, with CD ROM drive).
Could anyone tell me how I could swap out the external drive and the internal
drive. I would still like to use the 250 MB drive, but I don't know what to
do about the internal termination etc. Can I just interchange the two?
I do have a zip drive that is also connected to the SCSI chain.
Any help would be appreciated.

Subject: Fast Ethernet (Followup)
I appreciate the folks who took time to respond to my report of poor
performance with PCI and NuBus Fast Ethernet cards. I received some
very helpful advice. I also received some responses that made me realize
that I was not clear enough in my original posting. So, just to clarify
(and to summarize where we are in our testing):
We found Fast Ethernet (100-Base-T) performance on Macs to be between
1 and 2 megabits per second measured using AppleTalk. PCs using IPX
(Novell) typically ran at 6 to 8 mbps over the same switch and network
to the same file server (Novell 3.11 with a 100-Base-T PC card.)
Yes, we are using 10/100 Mbps Fast Ethernet Mac cards for our testing. The
NuBus cards are from Dayna and Farallon. The PCI cards are from Asante
and Dayna. We now have a Rockwell PCI card on order.
Yes, we are using a 10/100 switch. It is from Bay Networks.
Several folks suggested that NuBus Macs and the current version (1.0.8)
of Open Transport are slow when it comes to networking. We did install
a beta of System 7.5.3 along with O.T. 1.1b11. That resulted in a
marginal (a few kilobits) improvement in throughput. However, it was
nothing compared to the nearly 8:1 avantage that PCs have over the
Mac on Fast Ethernet. (The PCs used for the test are Dell Pentium 120s.
The Macs are a Quadra 660av, PowerMac 7500 and PowerMac 8500.)
This does seem to be somewhat protocol dependant. Macs running TCP/IP
run a little slower, but not significantly so, than PCs running TCP/IP.
Based on some information we received from Apple indicating much
better performance over 100-Base-T, we now suspect the Bay Network's
switch may be slowing down AppleTalk. We are discussing this now with
Bay Systems.
We welcome comments from others who have a combination of Macs and PCs
running on Fast Ethernet. More to come... hopefully.

The easiest way is to obtain an init called PopChar. When loaded it puts a
small p to the left of the apple in the menubar. Depressing that p will
display all the symbols in the currently selected font. Drag to the
character you want to print and it will be placed in your document at the
current insertion point.

I could not find a version later than 1.0.8 at Apple, so Netscape 2.0 is

On the bright side the Apple disk repair utilities can eventually convert

Does anyone know when Opentransport 1.1 is going to be released?

Subject: Type 1 error
I have a Performa 6300, 16Mb of RAM, System 7.5.1, Virtual Memory and
Modern Memory Manager both always off. Recently I trashed the Finder prefs
because I had problems with some icons. After restarting, the icons were
restored but the first time I tried to launch any of the AppleScript tasks
(those that come inside the AppleScript folder when you install it) from
the Apple Menu I got a message that in english should sound something like
this: "The application (unknown name) has unexpectedly quit because a type
1 error occurred". This doesn't happen if I launch the same scripts by
double clicking them, nor if I double click an alias of any of them. All
the other aliases in the Apple Menu are working fine, and so does
everything else. The problem seems to lie in Apple Menu, but I couldn't fix
it.
I tried the following:
1) Trashing AppleScript prefs and reinstalling the whole AppleScript
package, including extensions, making a new alias of "Automated Tasks"
folder and putting it in the Apple Menu.
2) Trashing Finder prefs again and rebuilding the Desktop with TechTool 109.
3) Zapping the PRAM with TechTool 109.
4) Checking my hard disk with Disk First Aid, which found no problem.
5) Disabling various extensions and control panels that I thought could
cause problems.
I already know that a type 1 error is a bus error, but I also learned not
to trust this kind of error messages. Any help is welcome.

When the query about the pound sign appeared in Info-Mac Digest I
anticipated there might be some confusion. Americans call the little
tic-tac-toe design (shift-3) a "pound sign". But if you are trying to type
English monetary figures on an American keyboard, as in "this dress costs
57 pounds," then the character you want is option-3. You can display the
option characters by opening the Key Caps application under the Apple menu,
and holding down the option key while you examine the on-screen keyboard.
Then hold down the option and shift keys to see other option characters.

The "Galaxy Beep" is another beep from the Clixsounds collection of

The beep is a short, punctual sound that makes a great alternative to

stereo siren-like sound that tails off strongly to the right, as a heavy
bass background harmonizes with it, fading out as the quick echoing ceases.

Figured this discussion is a good lead-in to a question that has plagued our

Good luck!

Drag to the

everything else.

Subject: Where can I get MacTCP Switcher?
Dear Info Mac'ers,
I'm interested in the program "MacTCP Switcher," however, it has
been flushed out of the info-mac listings.
Can some helping hand point me to a place where it is still
available, or maybe e-mail me the program?!
Thanks for helping. I appreciate it very much.
