Subject: [*] Journal 4.1.4 Personal Diary
Unlike many other journal style programs, Journal is NOT your typical day
planner, day runner, appointment reminder or project manager. It does not
have daily time tables, pop up reminders on your screen that you are late
for an appointment, display how far behind your latest software project (or
any kind of project that matter) has gotten and it doesn't have any fancy
chart capabilities to see how your time is managed. There are already
enough day manglers on the market to keep the mere mortal busy evaluating
them for a lifetime.
Now that you have a good idea what Journal is not, it makes things a lot
simpler to understand what it is. No doubt that Merriam-Webster probably
said it the best :
Journal : a brief account of daily events
Journal is a personal diary type of application ala Macintosh style. It
allows you to record each days events for any one calendar year at a time
(remember it's a diary not a planner). When the year is full, you simply
start a new Journal file for the next year.
Of course it has the ability to keep track of three different types of
reminders or schedules which can be recalled on any months display
throughout the calendar year.
Journal is also disk smart and you can use the preferences to set your
floppy disk size and Journal will enable you to record a years worth of
information and store each year on a single floppy disk. Therefore you
don't need a backup program to save your Journal files. A floppy is all
that is required.
With any diary, you will no doubt enter in very personal thoughts. With
real world diaries you got a physical key to lock up and secure these
thoughts. The fact that the key was what one would term a "suitcase" type
which could open anything from a suitcase to the old bus station lockers.
This really didn't really provide a secure feeling. With Journal you can
elect to encrypt your diary file using a specific password (don't forget
it!) so that unless someone knows your password they would have a better
chance of winning the next state lottery than gaining access to your
personal information.

Walk the edge of sanity with the "Maniacintosh StartUp," an intense
startup sound that haunts the silicon of any Mac. (Oohhh! Scary!)
This startup sound begins with a lucid voice that calmly says "It is
beginning." Suddenly, from either speaker, voices begin to mumble
strange things, as every second introduces multiple new voices, as they
begin to intensify while a deep bass rumble rises from below. The voices
reach an insane climax while a horrid scream rings from both speakers and
suddenly....silence. Then a deep, mystic voice says calmly "It has begun."
This sound is available in both stereo and mono versions and can be
downloaded here or at the Clixsounds WWW site at

Subject: [*] ToolBuddy DEMO - FutureBasic Tolz
ToolBuddy - A Programmable Toolbar for Future Basic Programmers
ToolBuddy is a programmable icon bar. He can sit anywhere on your monitor
(unlike the fixed toolbars in other programs). Additionally, he will
automatically expand to either the full height or width of the monitor he
resides on. Depending on the length of the bar, ToolBuddy can have up to 32
active icon buttons. These buttons can control most of the standard menu
functions in Future Basic with a click of the mouse. Since the APPLE menu
is a standard menu in Future Basic, ToolBuddy can activate the items there
as well. So now you're saying, "Hey, that's pretty good!" but wait -
there's more. If you place an ALIAS of a file in the Apple Menu, ToolBuddy
can launch that, too! It's very convenient to run ResEdit=81 with a simple
click on the ToolBuddy bar.
ToolBuddy has smarts, too. He knows when you have been playing with your
menus. If you happen to change the position of an item, ToolBuddy will let
you know if he can't find it, and therefore allow you to correct this
problem. If you're comfortable with ResEdit=81, you can even change
ToolBuddy's icon lists.
Inside every major program there is a small program struggling to surface.
=46rom the depths of ToolBuddy is a new companion product called WindowBuddy
(I seem to be stuck on these "buddy" names...). So, you ask, what is
WindowBuddy? Shortcuts. If you've used the Windows menu from Future Basic,
you'll know what a pain it is trying to remember the correct key
combination to activate the correct windows. When the Project Manager
creates a new window, the window order under the menu (and consequently the
key combinations) changes, because it places the last window opened at the
top of the list and pushes the rest down, yet the key combinations remain
in numerical order. On the other hand, with WindowBuddy, you can hold down
predefined key(s) and click the mouse on your source code window and a
popup menu appears with all the active windows in it. Just select the one
you want and it's automatically brought to the front, ready for use. When
you are working on a project which includes main and globals, WindowBuddy
will let you align them all to the .MAIN source window or stack them using
any offsets YOU DEFINE.

Dear Info-Mac fellows
I have some double-trouble with my Netscape 1.1N. Trying to download large
files (like Netscape 2.0) from ftp-archives, it runs out of memory after a
few hundred kb. Allocating more memory than originally needed by Netscape
or increasing the diskcache doesn`t help much. Whats wrong?
Also when quitting Netscape it "steals" a large block of memory which often
forces me to restart to launch other large memory-consuming applications.
Does it have to be like that?

Subject: Configuring MacTCP and PPP
Help!
I currently reside in Japan and have a PowerMac 8500/120 with English 7.5.2
and an American bought GV teleport platinum. I am trying to connect to a
local server and I need some assistance.
After configuring my MacPPP(v. 2.0.1), as I try to open it, I get the usual
noise from the modem and the PPP status states "initializing modem,
dialing, establishment, authentication, network" in succession. My modem
menu status displays "connection" but my PPP icon stays in the down
(frowning) position and I do not have the option of a "soft" or "hard"
close. I am able to send email, but I cannot load images on my Web
browser.
I have consulted my server's support line and they gave me a few
suggestions but informed me that this is the first they have heard of this.
I will list a few unanswered questions and hopefully someone can give me a
clue to what I'm doing wrong so here goes!
1. What should I enter for the Modem Init String in the Mac PPP config
panel? I have been assuming "AT&F1."
2. Refering to my Internet Starter Kit by Adam Engst (second edition), it
states that.... even if it does not conflict with the MacTCP or Mac PPP
directly, the fax or remote control software may take over the modem and
may leave the modem unaccessible by MacPPP.
Can this be the case and what can I do about it?
3. A friend informed me that I am unable to use MacTCP 2.0.4 with system
7.5.2 and that I must use MacTCP/IP 1.0.6 that came with my OS. My PPP
will not move at all when I try this (ie. no PPP status dialogue). Of
course the new TCP/IP was a bit confusing, with the configure options of
"Manually" or "BootP" or "DHCP" or "RARP," and I may not of selected the
proper configuration settings.
What are these options and am I on the right track? Should I get an
updated version of PPP as well?
4. In reference to #3. I was informed that I may have to update my Open
Transport v1.0.6 to 1.0.7.
Are there any other possibilities?
Would welcome any and all comments!
Thanks,
Hiroshi

Bilingual (French/English) grammar checker, equally good in both languages.
PRO: Faster than "Le Correcteur 101". Recognizes French/English text

Subject: Net Presenz, dial in, and time-outs
Hi y'all
I wonder if anyone can help me. For reasons of my own I am trying
to establish a mini-web/ftp presence. It doesn't have to be permanent,
because it is for private use, enabling easy and (almost) instant file
transfer. I have a dial in account, and use MacTCP/Free PPP, USR 28.8 on my
LC475 w/7.1. No RD or any other VM. This works fine for mail, browsing etc.
I just discovered ftpd (now called Net Presenz), and am trying to evaluate
it before I blow ten whole bucks on it. It (Net Presenz) seems to work
fine, but after 10 minutes (almost exactly), if I'm not doing anything
else, something seems to time-out. (The ARQ and CD lights go out on the
modem, the TR and CS lights are still on, and Config PPP doesn't notice
that the connection has gone)
Has anyone got a clue which time-out needs to be reset so that I
can leave Net Presenz unattended for about an hour? If so please could you
enlighten me. So far I am hesitant to blame Net Presenz, because when it
works, it works perfectly, but I don't know what else to blame because
every other part of my setup has been working fine for ages.

Subject: Performa 5200 German->English.
Hello, Mac-Folks.
I have a tale of trials and tribulations and a 2-part question. First, the
background:
Back in August, I purchased a Performa 5200 here in Germany. Since English
is my native tongue, I arranged with the dealer to have it delivered with
an English version of the system software ("No problem", said he).
The machine was delivered the German system installed (and the German System
CD included) with the promise that I would get the English system as soon
as it came in from the States.
About a month and a half later, I received the System 7.5 update kit. Since
I wanted to do a clean install, I followed the handbook instructions and
tried booting my machine from the Disktools diskette that was included. What
I got was a dialog box with:
This startup disk will not work on this Macintosh model. Use the latest
installer to update this disk for this model.
[Kinda makes sense--who would buy an 7.5 update kit for a machine that was
originally delivered with 7.5?]
Called the dealer and he said he would send me a startup disk for my
machine. Got it, booted the machine, but it wouldn't recognize the CDROM
drive (although the CD extension is in the system file).
Called the dealer again and told him that what I _really_ want is the an
original English version of the Performa CD. ("No problem" says he). Four
months later, he delivers another Update Kit.
Apple Germany tells me that it is possible to get a replacement Performa 5200
CD (English) but will not tell me the part number because "You are not
an Authorized Apple Service Center(tm)". I had a very serious discussion
with my dealer and he called Apple Germany while I was there. First, he
tells me that it will now be very complicated to get the Performa CD because
Apple told him that responsibility for all software (including System) was,
as of the day before, transferred to Claris. Apple also told him that the
disk that was delivered with the Update Kit _should_ work--something along
the lines of: maybe the German system is interferring with the English
system when it tries to boot. I find this answer a bit hard to believe since
(1) when you boot from one disk, it does not check to see what system files
are stored on another disk and (2) the diskette does not include the Enabler
for the Performa.
OK, I've taken up enough of your time (sorry) so here is what I've done
since:
- Built a Disktools disk from my German 5200 CD. This boots but, again, doesn't
see the CD.
- Discovered that there is a 9KB difference between the CD extention on my
hard drive (43K) and the one that was installed from the disk image(34K). (?)
- Replaced the CD extension on the diskette with the one from my hard
drive and, finally, have a diskette that will boot the machine _and_
recognize the CD but I have hit another wall.
- When I start the installer on the English CD, I get the following message:
The System Software 7.5 Installer does not recognize this Macintosh.
Please use the original disks that came with you computer. The
Installer cannot update the selected disk named "^0".
Please click Switch Disk to choose a different disk.
First, the disk name is totally bogus and, second, all buttons except
Quit are dimmed.
Anyone out there know what is causing this and how to get around it?
and...
Is there anyone out there who can tell me what the part no. is for the
replacement English Performa 5200 CD and where to get it (i.e. Apple or
Claris or...)? Maybe if I go to my dealer with the info in hand, he will
be able to get what I want and bring this to an end.
My appologies for the length of this post. Thanks for sticking with me.
TIA for any suggestions.

there's a wonderful patch for SimpleText called

it will add a few cool functions to simple text like

there's also a program called "Tex-Edit Plus"

both should be available on info-mac

Subject: Strange characters in mailboxes in Eudora 1.5.4
I am running Eudora Light (v 1.5.4) on a Performa 6200 with 16 Mb RAM and
system 7.5.1. Every now and again, I see strange characters in the mailbox
window ; and inverted question mark in the left-hand column, for example.
Message windows also behave peculiarly at times and a CA dipthong character
can appear at the end on lines.
The workaround is to close the window then to re-open it. Everything is
correctly restored. I haven't been able to pin down what feature or
function currupts these windows. They are always fine the first time that
they are open and become corrupted when they are background windows.

Walk the edge of sanity with the "Maniacintosh StartUp," an intense

reach an insane climax while a horrid scream rings from both speakers and

Thanks,
Hiroshi

It's part of the Laserwriter 8.3.2 package at the usual Apple FTP sites

Be warned that Laserwriter Bridge will not allow you to have more than

the Localtalk network. If you need to have file sharing or more than one

The best solution: don't clean 'em, stick 'em.
I've cleaned the speaker contacts of the Mac IIsi at our lab a
couple of times. It just took a couple of weeks for them to get
dirty again. My solution: take a bit of insulated wire and just
solder the speaker leads to the main board with the wire in between.

Subject: Macintosh advantage for engineers
A tidbit from Ed Boss:
A study was performed at Westinghouse to compare the productivity of
engineers and support staff (including Secretaries) on the two different
platforms.
The results of the study was written up by Christopher Davis of
Westinghouse and Mark Worthington in the SciTech Journal in two issues:
Sept/October 1994 and Nov/Dec 1994. Here are some quotes from the
write-up:
"Engineers using Macintosh for analysis output tasks demonstrated a
better than 2:1 efficiency ratio versus engineers using IBM-PCs."
"The relative costs of each type of engineering activity indicate an
average savings of 2:1 or more by using the Macintosh platform as an
engineering design tool over the IBM-PC platform."

Thanks in Advance - Chris. T.

Subject: Performa 5200 German->English.

"SimpleText Color Menu"
it will add a few cool functions to simple text like
search&replace, color, line/word count
there's also a program called "Tex-Edit Plus"
which also has a serach&replace function
but can handle text files larger than 32k
both should be available on info-mac
(sorry, i don't recall the directory,
but i'd have a look in /text)
hope this helps & good luck
