Subject: [*] c++advio: Advanced i/o & arithmetic compression classlib
Attached is an updated version of c++advio, an advanced i/o &
arithmetic compression classlib, Mac distribution. Please replace an
old version
info-mac:/dev/lib/advanced-io-cpp.hqx
which you currently have. The most significant change is a 4-line
tweak with sharing of an i/o buffer (which became necessary as CW8 has
changed the way virtual classes are destroyed). The current
implementation hopefully gets rid of these specific dependencies for
good. All projects and the library are recompiled with CW8. For the
first time it became possible to use PowerPC alignment of structures
in the CW projects that use C++ streams (it crashed before).
c++advio: Various advanced i/o codings of streams of integers
Keywords: arithmetic coding, start-stop coding, endian i/o, compression
Hot points:
- variable-bit coding of sequences of integers
(including the Arithmetic compression)
- explicit endian specification in dealing with integer streams
- a trick of sharing a stream buffer (a "file") among several streams
- with a validation code to verify everything
- with a commented source and CW8 projects
Please see a README file for more details.

Subject: [*] Cindy's Newsmailer v1.0
Version 1.0c is out, and fixes the problem many Power Mac users were
having with the product. The problem occurred if there was an odd menu
at the top of your screen, such as an icon menu. This affected mainly
Power Mac owners, but the occasional PowerBook was affected, as well.
Cindy's Newsmailer v1.0c is an offline newsgroup and emailer with
many advanced features, including the following:
1. Sends and receives email and newsgroup messages at times you
specify, and allows you to read and compose offline.
2. Supports background downloading, so you can read and compose
messages while the software is transferring messages.
3. Resizable, colored, scrolling windows, and different color "quoted"
text. The colors are user-settable.
4. Automatic routing of incoming messages to different folders based
on content. This allows you to, say, send all mailing list
messages to one folder, and all "get rich quick" messages to
another!
5. Indefinite message retention. You can keep all messages forever, or
expire messages as desired.
6. Address book to store frequently used addresses.
7. Tagline capability to store your favorite signature lines.
8. Form letters feature allows you to write standardized messages that
have wildcards for certain information, such as logonid, name,
date, time, your name, etc. When you choose a form to send to a
user, it automatically fills in these wildcards with the
appropriate information. Use this feature to send standardized
information with a "custom-built" look.
9. Carbon copies, blind carbon copies, and "message received"
acknowledgements.
10. Can use either MacTCP for an Internet connection, or the Apple
Modem Tool with the comm toolbox to use a "shell" account.
11. Will run on Power Macs, and older machines with limited memory.
12. Includes a new "sound notification" facility which will notify
you when new mail comes in for certain folders.
Try it, you'll like it!

Subject: [*] Cinematic Land 1.0
Cinematic Land is a graphic simulation system of cinematic chains for
Macintosh and accelerated for PowerMacintosh. It resolves the position,
the speed and the acceleration of any point and any member. You can edit
closed or opened chains, using blocked and movable points. Standard tools
are available in a palette window to make easy editing. Every member or
point could have indipendent time evolution.
You control any cinematic size through an unlimited number of control
windows adjustable on your screen. More new features have to come in
next releases.
Some examples are bundled, like the model of a rod & crank in internal
combustion engines, the core mechanism of a textile machine, the principle
of motion-picture projectors.
Cinematic Land requires System 7.0 and Color Quickdraw. If your Macintosh
can't run Cinematic Land, please email me why.
This archive contains two applications:
Cinematic Land 68K 1.0: intended for low-end users (68000 to 68LC040).
Cinematic Land 1.0: fat binary for power users (68020 and FPU to PPC).
Help system is integrated with an AppleGuide, though coaching isn't even
available, because lack of coming AppleScript features in Cinematic Land.
Cinematic Land is a shareware software of 15$ fee and you could reach
its author at [email protected].
I suggest to put this file into /sci directory.

Subject: [*] grayimage-21: _enhanced_ grayscale image processing classlib
The new release of the code has a few minor memory allocation tweaks:
it matters actually only for CW, where delete and free() do differ,
even for primitive types. The most significant change is that all
projects and the library are recompiled with CW8. Projects'
preferences are now changed to include PowerPC alignment: it wasn't
safe to do before if the code used C++ streams. The old submission had
CW6 projects and library, which are clearly obsolete (and must be
recompiled/converted to work with the latest CW). That'll warrant
resubmission, I figured.
What: grayscale image processing class library and verification code
Keywords: image arithmetics, image filtration, lazy image, C++, class library
Hot points:
- all standard algebra/arithmetics on an image/image slices
- LazyImages, and PixelAction iterators for fast sweeping actions
- very *fast* convolutions, median filtration, and look-up
table substitutions
- morphological filtration
- assigning an image of _really_ any size to another image _to fit_
- Fractal clouds generator (as an example of a Lazy Image)
- reading/writing XWD/PGM/grayscale_TIFF files with automatic
input file format recognition
- with a validation code to verify everything
- with a commented source and CW8 projects

A fat binary multimedia plug-in for Netscape. Version 0.2.0 (2/5/95)
This is a multimedia Plug-in for Netscape 2.06a. Web surfers can
use this
to watch movies and listen to music right from Netscape. This plug-in
offers HTML authors the ability to play background music, stretch movies,
present slide shows, and use continuously looping animations. The plug-in
should be placed in Netscape's "Plug-ins" folder.
Supported media:
QuickTime, MPEG, Midi, Windows WAVE, Sun =B5Law, AIFF, and Mac PICT.
Improvements since 0.1.0 (1/31/95):
* Lots of seemingly harmless bugs fixed.
* Importing of many media types.
* The default settings will not change the aspect ratio of
shrink-to-fit images.
* Movies will continue where left off when web pages are left and
revisited, memory permitting.
* Printing works.
* Plain controllers on soundtracks are centered.
* Zero-area destination boxes are safe.

Dear bgb:
I assume that you are using Newswatcher 2.0 (the latest version).
You should read the Newswatcher manual, it is explained well there.
Here are a few pointers. You need to set in the Newswatcher preferences
the application to decode the files. Go to Preferences, select
extracting Binaries
and then set the decoding program. You can use UULite or UUuncode but
I like
uuUndo myself: it is freeware and works very well. Select this program
in the 'uudecode helper program' box.
When you open a message that has been uuencoded, you will get a little
window
with the title and a small bow with 0's and 1's. Click on it os select
extract
binaries. The file should be decoded when the download is complete.
You can select
uuUndo to automatically delete the encoded files. To view the
pictutes, get something
like JPEG View or JADE and open the decoded files.
As far as I know, Newswatcher can not auto decode base-64 encoded files
(another type of
encoding, more rarely used). If you open a file and get a big text
file that looks like
gibberish, save it, then use something like YA-Base64 1.1.0 to decode
it.
Write back if you need more help.

Nope. Got the "....not by ICeTEe definition..." dialog.
I find this frustrating because this the second time I have checked
Internet Configuration 1.2 and ICeTEe for this capability of acting on
partial InfoMac URLs after hearing that it could.
I can't find any reference in IC's or ICeTEe's documentation that I
have, which claims the ability to act on partial InfoMac URLs and the
dialog comes up to say that it doesn't work.
BTW, I always use Easy-View to read the InfoMac digest. It does work
for partial InfoMac URLs with its own code.
Cheers,
Darrell

Dear David:
Sounds to me like you are starting from the CD (or external drive)
while still having the IDE drive as your start up disk.
There are two solutions:
Try to restart from your system CD (if you have one), run disk first aid
and then try to select your IDE drive in the Start-up Disk control
panel.
1) Get the Extension: Mount IDE Drive (1.0)
ftptoo.support.apple.com/pub/apple_sw_updates/US/Macintosh/System
Software
/Other System Software
Then restart.
2) Get the System 7.5 update. It corrects this problem
Make sure you have/ use the Drive_Set_Up 1.0.3, it is the latest one.
Good luck.

Thanks for your help but I think it turned out to be a hardware problem.
The only application that could detect the drive was Drive_Set_Up 1.0.3
and that gave me a type 1 error every time it tried to initialize. I
returned the Mac:)
So it's to late to try the mount IDE drive but I'll keep that one handy

Subject: Annoying dialogue boxes
Dear Mac-Infomeisters,
I have another annoying problem. I have two computers (IIci and an LCII)
networked together with local talk, and i share the stylewriter I have
between the two. The printer is hooked up to the LCII so I can use the modem
with teh IIci. However, in order for me to use the printer, the LCII must be
on also. That is not a problem since I don't print to often. Not printing
too often poses it's own problem, though. When ever I turn on the IIci
without the LCII being on, and thus the printer being "down", I keep gettinga
dialogue box saying "Printing Operations will not be available until you
choose a a printer from the chooser. I would like to know if there is any
way that I can bypass that dialogue box, and avoid it coiming up every 30
seconds.
Another problem I have is the dialogue box asking if I want to connect to the
other computer via file sharing. I need to click cancel 3 times because when
I click it the first time, the dialogue box just comes up again, and then a
third time. How do I stop these things? Any help would be deeply
appreciated.
Later,

Manager both always off. Recently I trashed the Finder prefs because I had
problems with some icons. After restarting, the icons were restored but the
first time I tried to launch any of the AppleScript commands (those that
come inside the AppleScript folder when you install it) from the Apple Menu
I got a message that in english should sound something like this: "The
application (unknown name) has unexpectedly quit because a type 1 error
occurred". This doesn't happen if I launch the same scripts by double
clicking them, nor if I double click an alias of any of them. All the other
aliases in the Apple Menu are working fine, and so does everything else.
The problem seems to lie in the "Automatic commands" folder alias in the
Apple Menu, but I couldn't fix it.
I tried the following:
1) Trashing AppleScript prefs and reinstalling the whole AppleScript
package, including extensions, making a new alias of "Automatic Commands"
folder and putting it in the Apple Menu.
2) Trashing Finder prefs again and rebuilding the Desktop with TechTool 108.
3) Zapping the PRAM with TechTool 108.
4) Checking my hard disk with Disk First Aid, which found no problem.
5) Disabling various extensions and control panels that I thought could
cause problems.
I already know that a type 1 error is a bus error, but I also learned not
to trust this kind of error messages. Any help is welcome.
TIA

A few issues back there was a talk of a shareware that can depersonalize

I believe that's a limitation of ICeTEe, not of Internet Config or Info-Mac
or your e-mail program. I, too, would _love_ to be able to Command-click
these partial /info-mac URLs and download the programs/files directly.
The reason for those partial URLs is, of course, that Info-Mac is so
popular an FTP site that, in order to avoid bandwidth drain on the main
site, FTP client apps are designed to automatically use whatever Info-Mac
mirror site you've set as your default in Internet Config or in the FTP
client itself. Choose the mirror closest to your location for (usually)
best results.
As for the ICeTEe problem, your/our best bet is to e-mail ICeTEe's
author(s) directly. I couldn't find an e-mail address in their Read Me
file, but their web site is
. Check it out and
let them know we want this feature added.
In the meantime, though, the following tidbit from their Read Me file may
prove of some solace to you:
"If you empty out a string in the STR# 128 resource inside ICeTEe, it won't
put up the corresponding error message dialog. For example, you can blank
out string number 8 and you will never see the "That isn't a URL" error
ever again (-;"
So if you can't beat 'em, hack 'em.

Norton Disk Editor will not let you edit your boot disk. That is, you
have to boot from a different drive before Norton Disk Editor will let
you change those values.

Nothing; ICeTEe is correct.
But if you view Info-Mac in either Easy View (I highly recommend it!) or
BBEdit, command-click is NOT passed to ICeTEe, but to BBEdit's GetURL
command, which CAN figure out how to complete the URL for you.
That would be a nice addition to ICeTEe!
Hope this helps. Cheers,

Recently I've added a Spanish keyboard layout to my System (7.5.1, running
on a Performa 5215CD). If I try to change the layout using
command-option-space, I can't select the U.S. keyboard. I can choose it
using the mouse at the Keyboard Control Panel menu, but if I use the
keystroke combination, the U.S. keyboard dissapears from the layout list.
My wife's PowerMac 6100 with system 7.5 uses the same keyboard layouts, but
they're working as expected (being able to select every layout using
command-option-space). I'm puzzled. I've tried copying my wife's control
panel into my Mac without success.
What could be wrong?

Mark, as a very happy user, could I recommend Jon Gotow's Sleeper (St.
Clair Software), now at V.2.0, and I think from memory up here at sumex in
config. (Normal disclaimers apply here!)
I've used Sleeper for 6 months, since v.1.1. This new version can replace
Energy Saver, and correctly sleep Energy Star monitors. In addition
Sleeper is a screen fader, and best of all perhaps it spins HD's down over
a wide range of times. Energy Saver used to bother me, even at v.1.2, and
Sleeper, with more features, and more user configurability, is a real
improvement. And the system doesn't go "Poop Poop Poop" when it wakes!
As for your real question, the one I'm not answering
'cause it's the
topic of threads running endlessly for years and years; the consensus such
as it is seems to say "shut down your computer if you're going to be away
>From it for more than 8 hrs or so."
It's a contest, IMO, between components like HD's and CRT's which don't
like to be shut down, yet wear out if they're on; and circuit board things
like capacitors which don't like changes of state, and should, if operating
at reasonable temperatures, be kept on.
You'll therefore extend the life of logic boards by keeping them on as much
as possible--oh, you want the fan on, fans are cheap and tend to last
forever, and offer the advantage of controlling temperature. A sleeping
monitor is in a very nice condition basically, it's at very low power but
not completely "off" (does anyone here know the exact details of this?)
One of the reasons I like Sleeper V.2 so much is that it lets the HD spin
down after as long as 3 hrs. If a machine is unused for that length of
time, it doesn't hurt much--given the modern mean time between failure for
drives--to have it spin down and save power.
But we haven't spoken of power supplies--on the old Macs I've known, that's
the item which fails first. Low power use not switched on/off too much is
the thing which occurs to me, so again sleep is good! But others will
think differently...
And we haven't spoken of thunderstorms. In a stormy city, my own Macs are
shut down each evening, with their power plugs out of the sockets. And the
phone wires to modems pulled at the wall. I find *I* sleep better that
way!

I am looking for a text-searching tool having the follwing features:
1. capable of searching inside a whole folder of files of any kind/size
2. allowing the user to quickly open (by double-clicking) any document wherein
the searched text has been found
3. consuming little memory
4. allowing the user to specify "wildcards" (ie, jolly characters) in search

5. not annoying the user with registration reminders, beeps, clicks, pop-up

6. with a neat interface, providing as much information as possible
7. fast
Does anybody know of such a thing? I have found something similar by myself,

"SIT!" as a prefix? Interesting: I've only seen it with a suffix, (e.g.
"filename.sit"). Try renaming the file so it has .sit as the suffix. To
follow your above examples (did they really come named that way?), rename
them as:
frLau j.sit
n{rLau.sit

Subject: Word Eqn Editor question
Hi,
I used the Equation Editor of Word 5.1 with both the bitmap and the
TrueType versions of New Century Schoolbook installed.
When printing the document, the equations are too slanted, too italic.
This does not happen when I de-install the TrueType fonts and use only the
bitmap version (in this case the italics look fine).
Could it be that the (slow!) Equation Editor italizes the italic version of
the TrueType fonts (e.g. by bypassing the Font Manager?). How do I get rid
of the too italized printing problem? I would like to use the TrueType
version, since it looks better on the screen, when working with odd sizes
(e.g. 11 points).
Thanks,

A README file gives more details.

* Printing works.

Cheers,

So it's to late to try the mount IDE drive but I'll keep that one handy
incase it happens again.

Subject: AppleScript strange behavior
I have a Performa 6300, 16Mb of RAM, Virtual Memory and Modern Memory

Nothing; ICeTEe is correct.
But if you view Info-Mac in either Easy View (I highly recommend it!) or
BBEdit, command-click is NOT passed to ICeTEe, but to BBEdit's GetURL
command, which CAN figure out how to complete the URL for you.
That would be a nice addition to ICeTEe!
Hope this helps. Cheers,

problem with icon of new formatted LC630 IDE disk using Drive setup
1.0.3.
The harddisk of my LC 630 was crashed. I reformatted it with Drive
setup 1.0.3. and installed my system again.
The problem I have now is that the icon of the disk is a flat file
icon, and when I try to put a new icon on it, using cut, clear or
paste, I get the message "the command could not be completed, because
it could not be found".
Any idea how to overcome this problem?????
Gerrit.

Subject: Serial port missing
I have a Performa 5215CD and System 7.5.1. A couple of days ago, the
Chooser printer's list get off the menu. I can't setup any printer, nor
share my Mac over the Appletalk network. I've reinstalled the System
without result. The serial port appears to be missing.
It's a hardware or software problem? Can I use the modem port for printing
to my Personal LaserWriter 320?

Subject: Sleep mode extend unit life?

As for your real question, the one I'm not answering
topic of threads running endlessly for years and years; the consensus such
as it is seems to say "shut down your computer if you're going to be away
I find *I* sleep better that
way!

Subject: Smart text-searching utility wanted
Hello, Mac fanatics.
I am looking for a text-searching tool having the follwing features:
1. capable of searching inside a whole folder of files of any kind/size
2. allowing the user to quickly open (by double-clicking) any document wherein
the searched text has been found
3. consuming little memory
4. allowing the user to specify "wildcards" (ie, jolly characters) in search
patterns
5. not annoying the user with registration reminders, beeps, clicks, pop-up
messages and the like
6. with a neat interface, providing as much information as possible
7. fast
Does anybody know of such a thing? I have found something similar by myself,
but the stuff I have does not comply with all requirements 1 to 7. Thanks a
lot in advance for any direction.

An acquaintance purchased a 7500/100 here in Japan, and it came with the
Japanese version of 7.5.2. He wants the English (US) version of 7.5.2. Apple
Japan apparently said that 7.5.2 was not an item that he could buy. Does
anyone have any suggestions?

"SIT!" as a prefix? Interesting: I've only seen it with a suffix, (e.g.
"filename.sit"). Try renaming the file so it has .sit as the suffix. To
follow your above examples (did they really come named that way?), rename
them as:
frLau j.sit
n{rLau.sit
...and then drag them on top of the StuffIt! icon. See if that works.

Hey, my four year old and my seven year old got hand me down Mac
512's. I believe they are running os 5.3. I tried down loading some
stuff but it all took more ram and newer systems than the 512's have.
Where can I find a site that has education programs & games that will
run on a Mac 512.

(e.g. 11 points).
Thanks,
Michael
