Subject: [*] BigEYE v1.02
BigEye is a computer program designed to take realtime video information and
convert it into midi messages. It runs on any Macintosh computer running
system
7 or later, QuickTime 1.6 and the Apple Midi Manager or Opcode OMS.
It supports all QuickTime compatible video digitizers, including serial cameras
like the Connectix QuickCam, making it usable for PowerBooks and other
non-AV Macintoshes.
It is also possible to use prerecorded QuickTime movies as a video input
source.

request on your site in the "info-mac/data" directory. Thank you again!
Unfortunately, I had to append some disclaimers to these files in the

Subject: [*] Cindy's Newsmailer v1.0
--Version 1.0a adds a sound notification option, and a bug fix.
--Please remove prior versions from your site, and
--please remove these lines at top before posting it. Thank you.
Cindy's Newsmailer v1.0a is an offline newsgroup and emailer with
many advanced features, including the following:
1. Sends and receives email and newsgroup messages at times you
specify, and allows you to read and compose offline.
2. Supports background downloading, so you can read and compose
messages while the software is transferring messages.
3. Resizable, colored, scrolling windows, and different color "quoted"
text. The colors are user-settable.
4. Automatic routing of incoming messages to different folders based
on content. This allows you to, say, send all mailing list
messages to one folder, and all "get rich quick" messages to
another!
5. Indefinite message retention. You can keep all messages forever, or
expire messages as desired.
6. Address book to store frequently used addresses.
7. Tagline capability to store your favorite signature lines.
8. Form letters feature allows you to write standardized messages that
have wildcards for certain information, such as logonid, name,
date, time, your name, etc. When you choose a form to send to a
user, it automatically fills in these wildcards with the
appropriate information. Use this feature to send standardized
information with a "custom-built" look.
9. Carbon copies, blind carbon copies, and "message received"
acknowledgements.
10. Can use either MacTCP for an Internet connection, or the Apple
Modem Tool with the comm toolbox to use a "shell" account.
11. Will run on Power Macs, and older machines with limited memory.
12. Includes a new "sound notification" facility which will notify
you when new mail comes in for certain folders.
Try it, you'll like it!

Godot's Faces V1.08 (c)1992-1996 AKUA interactive media ag
**** Godot's Faces Release 1.08 consists of three archives:
a.) Godot's Faces 1.08 containing Control Panel, I.R.S. and ReadMe
b.) Godot's Faces Main 1.08 containing a main set of Face-Files
c.) Godot's Faces More 1.08 containing more Face-Files
**** What it does=8A
Godot's Faces "attaches" files to your System file to enhance or augment
it with new features such as icons, sounds, windows, buttons and/or
scrolls.
Godot's Faces uses NO RAM, patches NO TRAPS and - read my lips - NO NEW
TAXES (It is free).
**** Why you want it=8A
There are a lot of cool icon sets out there from Copland to Hi-Tech to
John Q. Programmer's Personal, for one. You can just drop these in your
=46aces folder instead of dangerous/complicated ResEdit work.
Another reason is to keep your Sounds and other System stuff (FKeys,
etc.) out of the System file, so you can do a clean install without
losing these things. When you boot with the "Shift-Key" to disable
extensions, you really disable everything you've changed.
One further reason is to use Face files containing replacement
button/list/scroll/window definition procedures (the things that draw
your windows and buttons), they could be placed in the "Faces" folder
for use with no further extensions needed to your System. Some
contributed items are included in the distribution. (See the note below
on third-party Face files.)
Version 1.08
a.) Fixed problem with ROM resources that came back in V1.07. This
affected newer Macs (e.g. PowerMacs) trying to use button/window/scroll
=46aces.
b.) RandomFile no longer needs to be anywhere special alphabetically.
c.) Face-Files with custom icons will not be processed. You can use this
feature to disable individual Face-Files without moving them.

Subject: [*] CornerClock (app and Pascal source)
CornerClock is a pascal program based upon Masafumi Ueda's MBarClock program.
MBarClock was a program which displayed the time or date in the menu bar to
the left
of the Apple menu. CornerClock uses that same feature and adds sound.
I converted Masafumi's MBarClock from C to Pascal, and then began forging it
into
a chime replacement program. Currently, if you have long chimes activated
with your
clock which comes with system 7.5, you may experience a very annoying
distorted
sound which interrupts your chime. This is a known bug with the system, as
it does not
appear to lock the sound handle when it plays it (it should lock it because
it plays it
asynchronously). CornerClock plays the hourly chime asynchronously, but
locks the
handle so you get a smooth play.
CornerClock will play a grandfather clock chime on the hour (3 chimes as
3:00, 4 at 4:00, etc.).
When you place the cursor over the time, it will change to the date for 2
seconds, then change back
to the time (same feature in MBarClock except now there is sound). I've also
added some menus
to CornerClock so that you can toggle the date and time, and force a chime.
There are many enhancements which can be made, like changing the chime sound,
changing the
volume, etc., but I'm releasing it as is to provide the Pascal community with
some more sample
Pascal code. Feel free to send me any questions or notes of thanks.

competently as a dedicated program such as EndNote or ProCite. Allows full
use of the power and elegance of FileMaker Pro and the comprehensive
citation options of WordPerfect, operating as a transparent extension of
both programs.
Uses AppleScript, WordPerfect macros and FileMaker scripts to automate
selection and formatting of bibliographic citations to any formatting
style, including footnotes, endnotes or in-text citations plus bibliography
as required by the Chicago Manual of Style, MLA, or any others. Requires
system 7 and the AppleScript extension. Works with WordPerfect 3.1 and
later, and FileMaker Pro 2.1v3 and later.
This version, 1.1.2, provides substantially faster speed of operation.
A few steps to install and configure, but easy and elegant thereafter.
Free.

For those who don't know NET/Mac... NET/Mac is the application that
supports TCP/IP over packet-radio, which means, that hamradio operators
can use NET/Mac for their wireless TCP/IP network...
In this version of NET/Mac the following mods/features were implemented:
- Mod for ax25 level 2 by DK2HD... Thanks Detlev!
- Implemented a minor mod for the 'sourcewhendone' command
- Added mods to support more POP-servers
- NET/Mac does NOT support the new Buckmaster CD-ROM's HAMCALL
database yet... I am trying to convince Buckmaster that I need
the new data-encryption-method, but as of yet they are not ready
to release a description of the encoding-algorithm...
The old CD-ROM's remain fully supported...
This version obsoletes all versions of info-mac/comm/radio-net-mac in
the Sumex-Aim.stanford.edu (and it's mirror-) archives.
The new NET/Mac has (hopefully) been uploaded to:
- oak.oakland.edu, to the directory /pub/hamradio/mac/digital
- ftp.ucsd.edu, to directory /hamradio/packet/tcpip/incoming.
If it's not there (anymore), then look at /hamradio/packet/tcpip/mac.
- hamster.business.uwo.ca, to directory /pub/amsoft
- wa2zkd mirrors UCSD's incoming on his Landline BBS. Ham's w/o ftp

From: David B Gustavson
Subject: [*] Netscape 2 Friendlier eg Close does Back
This Resource file contains replacements for certain of the Menu resources
of Netscape 2, to make its behavior friendlier (more consistent with other
Mac contexts).
The changes are:
Added Cmd-S to the Save or Save As in several places
Added Cmd-R to the "Mark all Items Read in this NewsGroup"
and the important one:
Disabled Cmd-W so it won't close your last Browser window, and changed
Cmd-W to do "Back".
This makes the Netscape window behavior more consistent with the usual use
of windows in the Mac, namely:
In most Mac environments, you open an item and create a window by Cmd-O or
double-clicking, to any depth, and you back out of the nest of windows by
using Cmd-W.
But in Netscape, you single-click to open (double usually does no harm),
but have to use Back to back out of the nest. If you forget you are in
Netscape instead of some other editor or finder context, and hit Cmd-W by
habit, you close your Browser window and with it all the history of where
you have been.
I did this a lot, and found it extremely annoying. Contexts that feel
similar ought to act similarly on the Mac--I shouldn't have to add a new
habit to consciously check my context every time I want to close a window
to unnest a level!
To install, you need ResEdit. Open "Netscape 2 Friendlier" in ResEdit,
select the Menu resource, Cmd-C to copy it to the clipboard, open Netscape
2, Cmd-V to paste. When asked, tell Netscape to replace resources with the
same IDs, Cmd-S to save, quit.
This updates only the half dozen menus in Netscape that have changes in
their Cmd keys.
The same changes have worked through a few 2 beta versions, and are likely
to work for a few future releases, but there can be no guarantee of that.
At least it seems unlikely to cause a crash, and you can always back up to
a fresh version by using the Netscape installer.

Not at all. There are several ways to change the creator. Pick up
something like File Buddy or Get More Info from Info-Mac. You can also
change this info on the contents of StuffIt archives and decompress them
with the new info. You don't necessarially have to resort to taking a

This works, but it's not quite as simple to the end user as double-clicking.
>BTW, I think Word 5.1 wont open Word 6 files anyway.
Microsoft has made available a translator for Word 5 to open the Word 6
format. Snag it from your fave Info-Mac site or Microsoft's ftp and Web

people like you, who think that Word 5.1 is a great upgrade from 6.0

Mr. Brody,
I haven't checked the referenced ftp site lately, but the A/S 4.2 patch is
almost certainly for updating the full-blown *server* version of A/S 4.1
(and perhaps 4.0). This is a whole (fairly expensive) program in its own
right.
The version 3.5 of A/S that you refer to is the System Extension that is
used to connect to servers and the like from within the Chooser. (The A/S
4.2 patch most likely includes a 3.6 version of the A/S Extension, for
enhanced performance when connecting to A/S 4.2 servers.)
BTW, A/S 4.2 for servers is a *substantial* improvement over its earlier
versions, IMO.

Almost there, John!
The example address you gave isn't a *complete* url because it doesn't
include the machine name. And this is on purpose--it allows Info-Mac
readers from all over to use the handiest Info-Mac mirror. Here's how you
choose yours:
Open Internet Config, click on the "File Transfer" panel, and then select
the default Info-Mac server machine name from the second pop-up menu.
Choose one that's relatively near your home (A few hundred miles from you,
I use UIowa).
While you're at it, click on the "helpers" panel and make sure that the
"ftp" helper is assigned (I use Anarchie).
Save these changes, then try the "click on the address" trick again.
This time Internet Config puts together the machine name you've chosen with
the partial URL, creating (in the case of UIowa)
ftp://grind.isca.uiowa.edu/mac/infomac/ ... -patch.hqx
then passes the whole string to your ftp helper, which will then attempt to
connect to the server to get the file.
Hope it's warming up there, as well. (Today was 15 deg and it felt like
spring!)

Sounds to me like you have draft font set in your option. Select options
from the Tools menu, and uncheck draft font in the View (or General?) tab.
In this mode, Word shows everything in a generic font and text formatting
appears as underlining.

David,
We just installed Apple's A/V upgrade in a 5200, it came with an "InFocus"
box that provided the exact capability. We are running the 5200 and
displaying everything on a 27" monitor. No software required. The problem
is converting the Apple monitor signal to a standard video signal. The
"InFocus" box connects to the standard Apple monitor output that comes with
the A/V board and then converts it to 4 or 5 different output.

Mark, have you the latest version of the Multi-Scan Display software,
v.1.2, from ftp://support.apple.com? With our 15" Apple multisync we don't
have this problem with Display Enabler 1.2 and Now's Startup Manager

Aha! but we do have a trivial problem with Startup Manager which I've
isolated down to the Multi-Scan software. Changing the startup extension
set via a Startup Manager hotkey causes the system to reboot (Startup
Manager treating the set as if that set is new), just as the Now Toolbox
loads. Not a problem really, an annoyance. But I think I'm off to try
your trick!

The 'demo' is now on info-mac mirrors - I got it from:
The VISE installer tells you that it's experimental software, and its
custom installer seems slightly broken. 'Necessities' turns out to be Mac
Drag and Drop, which it installs nowhere useful. If you don't have enough
disk space, you can't find out how much you need. And although this claims
to contain a 1.0.3 demo good until March, the archive actually contained
1.0.2b3, which had already expired, so I had to set my clock back to
get the thing to even run.
After I did that, it just hung after taking seemingly forever to load in
one of the included files. No supplied documentation, so I still don't
knoww what this is supposed to do.
Why was this even sent to info-mac? As it stands it's garbage.

Subject: LazySusan did me in
Hi!
The following probably reflects on my own stupidity, but I had
some major problem with a little utility I downloaded a
few days ago from ZiffNet: LazySusan.
It promised to allow different preference sets, based on
specifif tasks. Since I work with only 12M-RAM, I often have to
go to Extension Manager and remove extensions for things like
scanning. So, I figured this might help.
Having run through it for a few minutes, I felt it wasn't right
for me and trashed the extension. Upon reboot, everything on my
desktop had changed, font size, all sorts of preferences were
gone.
I found a "LazySusan" folder in the preference folder, glanced
through it - this is where my stupidity came in! - found a few
items, which I moved back into the main Preference folder, and
trashed the LazySusan file.
Mistake, Big, Huge!!!
Apparently, when arranging pref-sets up, the utility works with
the real thing, i.e. it actually moves and disables some
preferences instead of working with aliases or some other less
direct instruction set.Result?
I ended up dumping some pretty important stuff along with
LazySusan. Items, which I had not backed up for a few days,
like e-mail addresses, etc. Major bummer!
Again, since much of this was due to my own flawed thinking,
and the late evening hour, I should like to pass on the
warning: Have a good look at what LS does with your stuff,
before 'dumping her', okay?

Eckhard

Subject: Major drive problems part 2
Thanks for all the replies about my drive guys. Thanks for the copies of Mt
Everything. After sending the previous message (info-mac V14 #28), I went
through my drive with Norton one more time, this time not with the disk
doctor, but the disk editor.
It isn't a termination problem. It isn't an SCSI ID problem. It isn't a
loose connection. It isn't a corrupted driver or anything like that. It's
something wrong with the drive itself. Norton seems to be able to see all
the files on the drive, but the directory is screwed up.
Looking at the B-tree headers, the first node points to node #0, and the
last node points to node #1. node #0 is actually the header itself, so
that's wrong. I looked through the drive patiently and found that the first
node should actually be at #1206. Then I went through the other nodes and
found that, although the majority of the nodes were okay, some of them were
pointing to invalid node addresses. Also, the last node should be somewhere
close to #7719. I can't get the address because it points to aninvalid
node. So basically my B-tree catalog header is mostly intact, except for
several addresses.
This accounts for the fact that disk doctor complains that node #0 and #1
are invalid. However, I don't understand why it can't fix them. I tried to
use disk editor to write in a new first node address, but it doesn't allow
me to change the values.
If norton can't fix this automatically, and it won't allow me to change the
values myself, is there anything else I can do? Does MacTools allow me to
do this? Would MacTools be a better bet? Or do I have to buy another 1GB
and start copying all the files over (argh, dir structure is gone!)? Or do
I have to translate everything from hex code and try writing it in if
norton doesn't allow me (double argh!)? Should I just send my drive to a
drive recovery service (does that sort of thing exist in Singapore?) Help!
Also, can someone point me to somewhere where I can read up about B-tree
nodes and all this? I need to know more.

Harriet, it can be said quickly, but it takes a while to fix;-)
The HD directory is faily badly damaged. Norton sounds to have fixed some
of it, but you've still problems. Norton's "fixes" are a bit like patching
a pair of pants: they're OK if the surrounding cloth is OK, but if not...
And reinstalling the system on a damaged disk is really only like wearing a
new belt with those bady patched pants...
So get our you Syquest or Zip, back up everything but the system, and
format the HD. Do a completely clean install of the system and extensions
etc., then restore your data and applications. It takes time but things
walk a lot better afterwards...
Hope this helps...

Subject:
Paperport original vs. Vx 1:26 PM 2/5/96
My administrative office is starting to use the nifty Paperport to scan and
make available much of our documentation online. However, now that we're
starting to receive some of the newer Vx's, I'm seeing some compatibility
issues.
First of all, the file format is different. The Vx's will read (and convert)
the older files, but of course the original ones won't read the newer format.
Visioneer told me to save as Paperport 2.0 format files when scanning in with
the Vx's to maintain compatibility since there is no upgrade for the older
units, but this is a major pain. More seriously, the free reader that we use
to allow users to retrieve and print these documents won't recognize the
newer format.
I know that the Vx has been out for quite a while, but it seems that
Visioneer didn't have all the pieces in place before releasing this new
version. It would be nice to have a batch converter to update archives of old
files. I read a letter in a recent MacWeek about a user comparing the
Connectix QuickCam to the Paperport. He said that while Connectix has posted
free updaters for the Quickcam drives, Visioneer has been less than
forthcoming about new software and updates. My experiences have borne this
out. I'd be interested in any comments or suggestions on people using the
Paperport in a document distribution mode.
BTW, does anyone else get annoyed by that time bomb they put in the Paperport
software, asking you for a registration code after you've been using it for
awhile? Makes me feel like I'm using shareware.

On installation of Ram Doubler, an invisible file named 'Load RamDblr' is
installed in your system folder. This file is responsible (as its name
implies) for loading Ram Doubler into memory on start-up.
It sounds to me that this file may not have installed. If you simply
dragged a copy of Ram Doubler to your System folder and didn't install it
using the Ram Doubler Installer, this invisible file, Load RamDblr, didn't
make it into your new System folder and therefore it's not available to
load Ram Doubler into memory at start-up!
You can find out if this file is in your System folder by looking for it

Subject: SigmaPlot 5 (Mac): First Impressions
Some time ago I posted an inquiry whether anybody had hands-on
experience with Jandel's new SigmaPlot 5 for the Mac, which claimed to
be a very powerful program for publication-quality SCIENTIFIC data
plotting (including 3-D plots) as opposed to business presentation
graphics. I was specifically looking for a 3-D capability better than
that of Deltagraph Pro, which is oriented towards business
presentations, and of limited utility for scientific work. I was also
looking for a 2-D capability better than Kaleidagraph, which IS
science-oriented, but which has an awkward non-intuitive interface, a
painfully limited annotation capability, and an internal math
capability that uses an awful non-mnemonic language reminiscent of an
early-70's HP programmable calculator.
I received a number of replies, but nobody had used SP-5, so I ordered
it. It arrived a few days ago, and I thought there might be some
interest on the net to hear about an early user's first impressions
after working with it over the weekend.
The overall impression is one of a very promising program that is,
however, still in beta testing.
For example, consider "Undo": The User's Manual claims that "Undo" can
be found on the Edit menu, with Command-Z as a keyboard shortcut. Yet I
have been unable to locate it there or anywhere else, nor does
Command-Z work. Have they simply forgotten to put it in, or -- worse --
taken it out? A program without Undo?
Here are a few other problems:
No multiple-file capability: It is not possible to open more than one
file. This reduces copy-and-paste between files to the level of a
mid-80's Mac before Multifinder: Copy + Quit + Open + Paste = Yuck!
Scientific notation: There is no conventional powers-of-10 notation,
only the crippled "e" format, like 1.0e6. This is not what I would call
publication quality; many scientific publications will in fact not
accept it. This is in painful contrast to the excellent _text_
annotation capabilities, which permit character-by character
formatting, such as font changes, italicizing, subscripting, etc. My
biggest complaint about Kaleidagraph has always been that I am
restricted to two fonts in its text annotation capability, and that I
cannot selectively italicize or boldface parts of any text: It's all or
nothing. One of my reasons for looking at SP was to overcome that
limitation, but without a decent format for scientific notation SP
isn't any better.
Auto Redraw: When this option is on, the graph gets re-drawn after
every change, which can slow things down something awful with elaborate
graphs. So you turn Auto Redraw off. But how, then do you force a
re-draw? For example: When I changed the axis rectangle of a plot by
on-screen dragging, I discovered that the curve did not change along.
With no "Undo", I desperately searched for a "Redraw Now" command:
Nope! After some frustration, I finally found a kludgy way to force a
redraw. Never mind what the fix was; my point is that the program
should have an explicit command or button to force a redraw.
Save upon Quit: When, after making some changes in an _existing_ file,
I select Quit without first saving the changes, the program quite
properly asks me whether I want to save the changes. But when I select
yes, it gives me the Save as... dialog, as if the file had not yet been
named, insisting that I confirm or replace the existing name, which is
offered as the default name. When I confirm, it asks me whether I want
to replace the existing file. It's not a big deal, but it is
symptomatic of the unfinished nature of this release.
Stability problems: On my Mac IIfx, running System 7.1, the program
quit on me very frequently, often with the beloved "unexpectedly quit
... type X error" message, with X=1,2, or 3. I tested for the
possibility that this might be a startup conflict, but I also quits
with all Extensions off. The quitting is quite erratic: Sometimes, I
can go on for a long time, sometimes the program quits every few
minutes. Fortunately, it never crashed the Mac itself (well, hardly
ever: it totally messed up the System font once, requiring a restart),
but to make any real progress, I had to save very frequently.
Printing problems: Worst of all, in several cases, an attempted
printout of a 3-D mesh (on a Postscript laser printer) would print only
the backplane grids, but no mesh! Out of sheer desperation, I finally
re-started both the entire Mac and the printer, opened the plot file,
and printed, this time successfully.
The above are not the only problems I found, but the list should
suffice as an indicator of the kind of problems that make me less than
enthusiastic about this release. As I indicated at the beginning, I
felt like I was beta-testing something not yet ready. Now, I actually
enjoy beta testing, and have done a lot of it. But when I pay 250 bucks
for a program, I expect that someone else has done that already, rather
than me having to view that expense as a fee for the privilege of
helping the programmers.
Having said all this, let me be fair and add a few positive notes that
indicate why a -- hopefully -- improved version 5.1 might be worth
waiting for:
Considering that SP is a port from the DOS/Windows world, and ignoring
my complaints listed above, the user interface is remarkably Mac-like,
revealing it's non-Mac origin only occasionally (like through its
non-Apple color picker). If it weren't for those earlier complaints, I
would rate the interface as much better than that of Kaleidagraph. It
is quite intuitive, and one can learn a lot by just playing around
without having to wade through the 500-page Manual.
That manual itself is very well written. My biggest complaint is that
the cover came unglued almost immediately, leaving a nasty sticky
residue on the innards that I had to cover up with tape so it wouldn't
stick to everything. (Are they beta testing the glue, too?)
Probably the best part is a superb internal math manipulation
capability through what Jandel calls their Transform Language, a fairly
intuitive high-level language reminiscent of a good BASIC. It runs
circles around that abominable RPN calculator in Kaleidagraph.
Unfortunately, I ran into bugs even in the parser of that language, one
of which caused the Mac to quit with error code -491, whatever that is.
To add insult to injury, the quitting was preceded by a cartoon of a
face sticking out its tongue at me, with the message "Bummer".

Several utilites won't unstuff a file unless its name ends in ".sit". Try
making that name change and see if it works.
Same applies to ".uu" for uuencoded files--e.g., StuffIt Deluxe won't
decode a uuencoded file whose name doesn't end in ".uu"!
Hope this helps. Cheers!

If you have downloaded these files on a PC and then transferred to a
Mac, they have lost their "TYPE / CREATOR"-info, and StuffIt Expander
won't be able to open them. Add the info manually using ResEdit or a
similar utility.
Type = SITD
Crea = SIT!
and drag over Stuffit Expander.
Or open the files using StuffIt itself (even unregistered shareware version
will work) and extract manually.
I have reported this to Aladdin earlier, but apparently they don't have
a solution yet.
Best wishes, Christian.

Well, with this model, you're stuck -- I know, I have the same one (more
precisely, its cousin, the Performa 5300). The modem that comes with these
computers in Europe is a derivative of the French Apple Djinn Pro,
co-developed by Apple France and France-Telecom, and the latter insisted

I can recommend a couple of resources.
"ResEdit Complete" written by Peter Alley and Carolyn Strange is a very
good and easy to read (enjoyable) tutorial, available from bookstores, and
it comes with a disk. This one I recommend most heartily!
Apple puts out the "Resedit Reference" which is more of a techie book-it
won't tell you how to do the neat things that most people want to use
resedit for, the first book I mentoned is much better for that. The Apple
book more or less explains what the resources are and do. You might have to
conatct Apple for this one, that's where I purchased it.conatct Apple for
this one, that's where I purchased it.
There is also "The Resedit All Night Diner",(also comes with a disk) but
pass on this book and get the alley/strange book mentioned above. This book
uses a recipe metaphor to teach you, and its gets very tiring very quickly
(IMHO).
There is a freeware/shareware tutorial also available, the "HMG ResEdit
Primer" written by Herb M Goodman, but I don't know where to find it-
someone else may remember.
Hope this helps. You'll have a lot of fun using resedit (I do!),just be
sure to work on copies of whatever you're doing so that you'll be safe if
you edit something that you shouldn't.

Try it, you'll like it!

b.) Godot's Faces Main 1.08 containing a main set of Face-Files
c.) Godot's Faces More 1.08 containing more Face-Files

In most Mac environments, you open an item and create a window by Cmd-O or
double-clicking, to any depth, and you back out of the nest of windows by
using Cmd-W.

Subject: (Q) Sleep mode extend unit life?
I have responsibility for several Power Mac 7500's. Attached to one unit is
a new Applevision monitor. Rather than shutting the units down each evening
and over the weekend, I use the Energy Saver control panel to sleep the
monitor, the disk, and the system. Does sleeping these things extend their
operational lives as well as if I shut them down?
One item that never seems to go to sleep is apparently the fan, which I hear
running all the time. What is the mean time between failure for that? If
that fails, is there some interlock that shuts everything down so the system
doesn't accidentally overheat?
Thanks for whatever info that can be provided!

Not at all. There are several ways to change the creator. Pick up
something like File Buddy or Get More Info from Info-Mac. You can also
change this info on the contents of StuffIt archives and decompress them
with the new info. You don't necessarially have to resort to taking a
swig of vodka and doing it in ResEdit.

This works, but it's not quite as simple to the end user as double-clicking.
>BTW, I think Word 5.1 wont open Word 6 files anyway.
Microsoft has made available a translator for Word 5 to open the Word 6
format. Snag it from your fave Info-Mac site or Microsoft's ftp and Web
servers. The translator was released in response to the large number of
people like you, who think that Word 5.1 is a great upgrade from 6.0

Mr. Brody,
I haven't checked the referenced ftp site lately, but the A/S 4.2 patch is
almost certainly for updating the full-blown *server* version of A/S 4.1

But then nothing happens. But using the same configuration but a Suprafax

The trust modem is still fine because it's working on a Atari ST.

Mark, have you the latest version of the Multi-Scan Display software,
v.1.2, from ftp://support.apple.com? With our 15" Apple multisync we don't
have this problem with Display Enabler 1.2 and Now's Startup Manager
5.01/2.
Aha! but we do have a trivial problem with Startup Manager which I've
isolated down to the Multi-Scan software.

Could someone help me? I have a Mac, and I'm confused....
I am trying to view pictures in the alt.binaries.pictures newsgroup, but
when I bring up a listing, all I get is gibberish. Apparently it's some

some software called UULite or UUuncode- or something like that- in order

I am a novice and I have a MAC, and I would sure like to know how I can
decode this stuff into a real picture. Is there anyone out there who

am using NewsWatcher for my newsgroup reader, and for all I know, I may

Subject: Paperport original vs. Vx

You can find out if this file is in your System folder by looking for it
with something like Find Pro which will find it for you even though it is
invisible. (If it's there.)

Adam,
SndCntrl was included as FunSounds in the NOW Fun package that no longer
exists. The rights have passed back to the original author, Riccardo
Ettore. Riccardo has a web page with his programs on it at:
. He hasn't updated it in awhile. I
still use FunSounds, although I am registered for both.
You can also anonymous ftp the program from

Several utilites won't unstuff a file unless its name ends in ".sit". Try
making that name change and see if it works.
Same applies to ".uu" for uuencoded files--e.g., StuffIt Deluxe won't
decode a uuencoded file whose name doesn't end in ".uu"!
Hope this helps. Cheers!

If you have downloaded these files on a PC and then transferred to a
Mac, they have lost their "TYPE / CREATOR"-info, and StuffIt Expander
won't be able to open them. Add the info manually using ResEdit or a
similar utility.
Type = SITD
Crea = SIT!
and drag over Stuffit Expander.

**NOT** to include a speakerphone capability in ApleTel...
MegaPhone does not work with this modem either.
I hope this helps.

Peter,
