PicSort is a handy utility for automatically organizing large number of
files such as collection of text digests, pictures and sound files. When
you activate PicSort by drag/drop, PicSort determines if there are files
with identical prefixes in their file name and will automatically move the
files into new subfolders.

PicSort can also filter out files containing specific strings in the
filename and move them into new subfolders. For example you can use PicSort
to automatically search a folder and move all files containing ".jpg" in
it's file name into a new subfolder.

Subject: "Display Enabler" crash solved!

I just got a new AppleVision 1710 monitor (not the 1710AV, but the 1710),
and was quite dismayed to find that it wouldn't switch to 75Hz mode. Duh,
I forgot to install the software that came with it. Unfortunately, this
produced a new problem: my Mac crashed during startup! Fortunately, I
have Now Utilities, and the Now Startup Manager told me exactly what the
problem was: the new "Display Enabler" extension had crashed.
Unfortunately, a visit to the Apple Tech Info Library on the Web revealed
that the *real* problem was a conflict between Display Enabler and *Now
Startup Manager*!

Well, to make a long story short, I now have both Display Enabler and Now
Startup Manager loading together and living happily ever after. First, I
had to get Now Startup to forget about Display Enabler, and then I had to
get Display Enabler to load before the Now Toolbox. Actually, I killed two
birds with one stone: Display Enabler had its "Name Locked" flag set, so I
used Norton Disk Editor to change the name from " Display Enabler" to "
Display Enabler" (i.e. the original name had a single space in front of the
"D", and I changed it to three spaces in front of the "D"--more is better,
right? :)

Now Display Enabler loads first, and since the name is different from the
original, Now Startup Manager doesn't recognize it, and doesn't try to work
its magic load-order-munging. And I'm a happy camper.

Just thought I'd pass this along for any other Now Utilities users who may
decide to upgrade to a 17" monitor someday... :)

I've heard other PCI Mac users having similar problems. I haven't
encountered it myself (on a 7500) but I've got something
that--again--I've heard might help.

It's an old utility called CommCloser, long since gone from
Info-Mac and other archives. When folks begun to ask about it I
put it up at

The author is Russ Nelson. I've sent him an email to inform him
about what I had done but it bounced, not surprisingly since the
Readme file seems to be from 1991. It is "whateverware". Would it
be appropriate to upload it to Info-Mac?

I've had the same problem. Try deleting the Word Settings file in your
system preferences folder. It seems to get corrupted.

You'll lose your preferences, including your Work menu (if you've created
one), but Word should start up okay.

Suggest you recreate your preferences and work menu as desired. Word
will create a new Word Settings file. Copy it somewhere else on your disk.
Next time you get the "Not enough memory" message, clobber your corrupted Word
Setting file with your back-up.

Good luck.

Dear Eddie:

Here a few things you may want to consider:

To remove stuff from your system folder, go to the General
Controls control panel and uncheck the TProtect System
FolderU box. You should now be able to trash stuff at will.

If you get a desktop rebuild every time you boot up, the problem
may be with Macintosh Easy Open. Try to use the Extensions
Manager to turn of ALL extensions except MEO, and restart
while holding down command and option. Say yes to the
Rebuild Desktop? question.

I am fairly sure that in Netscape 1.x you can set the cache folderUs
size and location in the Preferences. Someone posted a tip a while
back to make it a RAM disk! I have not tried but sounds like a good idea.

Sincerely,

Romulo Romero

Subject: [Q] Mac Check error msg on 660 AV

I have a problem with a 660 AV, which is located in a Mac lab in our Math
dept.

The problem first became apparent when someone tried to run Mathematica
on this Mac. It was sooooo slow that he knew that there was something
wrong. The same thing occurred when he tried Maple. He ran Mac Check and
received the following error message:
"Missing Thread record, 905,1"

Not knowing what this meant, he then ran Norton Disk Doctor. This found
and repaired a large number of things. At this point, Mathematica
and Maple seemed to run properly.

He then ran Mac Check, and received the same message. Still not knowing
what this meant, he decided to play it safe, and reinstall the system.
(The system on the machine is 7.1,) He ran Mac Check again, and got the
same message, "Missing Thread record, 905,1".

If you know what this means, what causes it, and/or how to fix it, I'd
appreciate your help.

Subject: [Q] Where can I find a barcode font?

Hello all!

After lurking for many months, I'm hoping the wealth of
knowledge out there has the answer to this question:

Where can I get hold of a barcode font, preferably 3 of 9
encoding? I need to create my own data cartridge labels, and
would be able to spend about 50.00 GBP / 75.00 $US to get
what I need for work use. (More expensive options *considered*)

Alternatively, if anyone knows of a customisable application
or DA that will produce barcode labels, please pass on the
info.

>>Subject: [Q] Font Management Software

What are PowerMac folks using to manage their fonts these days?

I used to be a devoted fan of Suitcase, but even the latest version
(2.1.4p3 PPC) has problems on PowerMacs. I read in back issues of
info-mac of people who're using it successfully on PowerMacs, but my
experience trying to install it on a PM 7100 has been very
frustrating. I did manage to get it to work with OS 7.5, if installed
with the "System for any Macintosh" option, but, when installed with
the "System for this Macintosh" option, Suitcase worked only if the
upgrade wasn't installed. With the upgrade installed Suitcase crashed
the Mac without fail. And it wasn't an extension conflict. I removed
manually all extensions and control panels -- with the exception of
Suitcase -- and still no go. Looks like the 7.5.1 update installer
modfies some resources in the system file itself...

I also tried to have a go at Font Manager 1.5, but that was even
worse. It crashes without fail, it moves the Fonts folder to the
Preferences folder, and it creates several files in your System
folder, all with nary a mention of it in the Read Me file. (Compare
this to the StuffIt Expander installer. One of the "Read me" files
tells the user exactly what was installed and where. A true mark of
elegance...)
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

One thing that helps with SC 2.1.4p3 is to start over from a fresh
unused copy of 2.0 and update it to 2.1.4p3.
Next is that MasterJuggler works well.
Last, is if you can hang on a little longer Symantec demoed version 3 of
SC at the MacWorld show in Jan. It looked real good. It had a new,
simpler interface.

Subject: Apple 15" Multisync (Q)

Dear Digest readers,
Some pamphlets would say that I should be able to get 1024 x 768 resolution
on my Apple 15" Multisync. However, the maximum resolution I am ever able
to get is 832 x 624. This with the standard amount of VRAM on my PowerMac
7200. Would increasing my VRAM to a certain level give my monitor the
ability to have 1024 x 768 resolution? Or does this require getting one of
those video cards like the XGA adapter, or some other I haven't heard
about? So my question is: what amount of VRAM or what card do I need to
increase the resolution displayed on my monitor? Also would that VRAM
level allow me to have 8 and 16 bit or just 8bit color?

Please only reply if you have tried it on the 15" Multisync yourself. I
don't believe documentation all the time.

Thank you.

It has a few minor annoyances (after a crash, it makes you click "OK"

Subject: Exodus/FileMaker 3.0 Screen Freezes [MacTCP questions]

I use Exodus (PowerPC version 5.1.1) to access e-mail and run programs from
our Unix boxes on my Mac.

Lately, my screen freezes at arbitrary times when I'm using applications in
Exodus. I can't "escape" out and even the programmers button doesn't work, so
I've got to restart.

Coincidentally, I recently updated to FileMaker 3.0, which I use all the time.

I'm wondering if the TCP/IP networking of FileMaker may be clashing with MacTCP
(v. 2.06 for Sys. 7.5 update 1), which is used by Exodus.

I've tried using the AppleTalk option for FileMaker (therefore, if I
understand correctly, I am in effect running two networks at the same time,
MacTCP for Exodus and AppleTalk for FileMaker). But this didn't help. I still
get screen freezes.

I suspect intuitively that MacTCP is the culprit, but I do not have the
foggiest idea how this networking stuff works. Help!

I HAVE to run FileMaker and access our Unix machine at the same time. I'll
switch from Exodus to a different X-window client if necessary.

Subject: FTP Server

Hi-
I'm hoping to set up an FTP server that will be used as an FTP
site, Gopher site, and WWW server. I have software that does this
but it doesn't say anything about CGI commands for the WWW
server. This is a major part of the software I'm looking for and is
what I am hoping people will be able to take advantage of if they
would like to have an account on my server. (I am setting up, not a
BBS, but an internet site that involves FTP, Gopher, WWW, and
maybe mail but I am obviously in the beginning stages and will
probably not get it up and running until late May or June, but if I
ever do, it will definitley be available by then!)

Now, what I am looking for is a server program that supports FTP,
Gopher, WWW, and CGI commands for the web that I can put on my
mac and run in the background. I am hoping to find one under 150
dollars but I am willing to consider something higher. Right now I
have been experimenting with FTPd-300 and it has worked pretty
well. Yet, I don't think it supports CGI commands. If you have any
ideas on where to look, or a program for the Mac that allows it to
become a FTP server than I would greatly appreciate a reply. You
can post a message here, or contact me directly through E-Mail.

unadorned system 7, I confess to enjoying Aaron myself. Anyone REALLY
wanna adorn Aaron properly?

1) The overhead menu bar sure looks like a relic under Aaron, plain
white and very 2-D. How about a 3D grey bar up there with engraved
lettering?

2) Aaron really oughta be a Control Panel with choices. For instance
I really LIKE Chicago and find the Copland system font boring, so I
ResEdited Aaron to leave me with a Chicago-Copland interface. And
then there's Photoshop, which is still kinda glitchy for some dialog
displays with Copland running, and if it were a Control Panel I could
just turn it off.

I have a person who is using MS-Word 6.0.1 on a PowerMac 8100/100AV. For
some reason when we choose bold it underlines the text rather than making
it bold. The sam thing happens when we choose to italicize or underline.
In addition if we highlight the text and change the font, the font style
stays the same. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the application and
that hasn't helped. This problem appears only in MS-Word. All the aother
applications appear to work properly. And help will be greatly

Eric, there's a possibilty that the EMM of the battery, it's smart
controller, has a maladjusted memory. Bill Steinberg, long time Mac
genius, has documented this and in the same package, EMMpathy, provided a
fix. EMMpathy's on sumex, in config I think; or you could search at:

There's a more remote possibility, which is the simple one: badly faulty
battery. When I got my PB540 last year, both my batteries were in this
condition. EMMpathy fixed one of them, it's been perfect ever since; but
the other was really DOA, and that got replaced, no questions asked.

hope this helps...

Believe it or not, I still have a PB 100 - 4/20. It is a great machine,

Is there anything I can do to make it run faster? Any kind of upgrade?

Subject: Powerbook problems

Hi Macpeople,

I act as a Mac consultant/helper for members of an ISP here in Australia,
and I have recently come across a problem regarding setting up Powerbook
170's and a 100 I think, for internet use. All the macs I have set up for
Internet use have worked without any problems (PPP connection with
configppp, mactcp etc.) These have ranged from LC 475's to PowerPC 8500's
but they have been desktop machines, not laptops. I have been unable to get
any Powerbooks hooked to the net via this certain service provider. I set
them up *exactly* in the same manner as the other desktop machines but they
just can't establish the PPP connection. ConfigPPP and MactTCP are all
configured correctly and all software prefs are correct. Is there something
extra the Powerbook's need that I don't know about?.

I have tried everything I can except for totally upgrading the system
software on the Powerbook's. They're running system 7.0.1, while the other
macs I have set up have been with 7.5, 7.5.1 and 7.5.2. Is it the system
version that is the culprit? I figure that is the only thing left which may
be effecting the connection. Any help will be greatly appreciated. If you
are a Powerbook user, and do have a net connection, please let me know. I
will greatly appreciate it.

Regards,
Monib.

Make a new folder in the Netscape folder or wherever you want and
define that as Cache folder in Netscape's preferences. If you use
version 2.0(bx) chose "Network preferences..." in the Options
menu.

I have a Performa 550, about a year old, 5meg ram, 160mg HD. We have been

1: What is the best and easiest Mac language to learn to program in

2: Where is the best support for such a venture

3: Any other help would be appreciated

I use Now Utilities with no problems at all, have done since early System 7
days.

I think the point is that the duplication of extensions--i.e. having two
extensions load which do the same thing--is almost always fatal. They'll
patch the same traps, make the same calls, ask for the same resources, at
the same time. It's a recipe for accidents...

In the same Digest Paddy Atherton also wrote about
Suitcase, usefully, commenting:

>I do know the conflict with *7.5.2*--if you "Custom Remove" the
>WorldScript extension(s), Suitcase 2.1.4p3 works just fine (amazing, for a
>gizmo that hasn't been updated since the Gulf War ;-).

For me, that last bit is the problem, though. Suitecase is old. I loved
it under System 6--well, where would we have been without it?--and it still
works, but it also did and does some fairly underhand things (in the way of
patching) to get results. Andrew Welsh, in a Readme with his Init
Tracker, wrote a brief description of some of the things Suitecase gets up
to, which made my affections for it wane a little... Though I'm not saying
that Now Menus & Boomerang are entirely innocent in this regard...

It's a matter of personal choice finally. I find Now Utilities so _boring_
since I no longer have the fun of finding out
whether "small, clean, single-purpose share/freeware extensions" will (a)
work as advertised and (b) not badly conflict with each other... I find
using a suite from the same shop means I can be much more productive,
rather than spending the early morning hours formatting drives and
rebuilding systems...much as I like doing this... :-)

Just my two cents worth!

My wife has a Power Mac 6100/66 AV in her classroom. The Mac has a built
in monitor port on the machine and an additional monitor port on the AV
card so two monitors can be used at the same time. The one on the AV card
can be switched to a TV. She would like to mirror the two monitors so she
can show one on a TV and see the same thing on her monitor. There seems to
be no software supplied that allows the two monitors to mirror each other.
On her Powerbook 520C there is a control panel "PowerBook Display' that
allows this video mirroring to be done. Curious that the same function is
not available for the AV Mac.

Does anyone know of any software that could do this for an AV Mac. The
PowerBook module does not work on the AV Mac. Thanks

Hi Macmaniacs:

Recently I dowload a X-Files Screen Saver, but it hang up each time I run

pictures:
"QuickTime and a Photo-JPEG decompress are needed to see this picture", I
have installed QuickTime extension but seems this isn't sufficient.
I need a special application? What could be?

I have two recomendations that they are in Info-Mac archives:
Decor 3.0 a french product, hungry ram.
DeskPicture 4.01, cool interface and many pictures formats support.

Well, I don't have similar configuration like you but Netscape 2.0b6a is
the more poor release since Netscape 2.0b2, nobody knows why they released
so bug version.
I've revised Netscape's user newsgroups and seems that nobody is
confortable with this release, but solution for hangs nobody knows.

I experimented a slow in perfomance of my Powerbook 160, inexplicablely the
bookmarks don't respond to click of the mouse. I tried back to 2.0b5 but
was to late, is like my computer should be infected. A friend with a Quadra
700 the hangs occurs intermittently. Seems that Netscape forget that 68k
plataform exist, 'cause in PowerPC this bugs don't occurs.
