Subject: [*] 1000 Buttons & Graphics, Too!! (FMPro2.x)

Are you tired of spending endless hours making your database look juuuuust
right?

Do you make databases that end up looking far more simplistic than you'd
like?

Are you looking for ideas for database graphics styles?

Do you need a large set of available graphics to make your databases look
good without spending hours and money on the construction of it?

Do you need some good graphics, but either can't draw well yourself or don't
want to or can't afford to resort to EXPENSIVE programs like Adobe Photoshop?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, then "1000 Buttons and
Graphics, Too!!" is the file for you. It is a FileMaker Pro layout system
that contains nothing but OVER 1000 ready-made buttons, button pieces to make
your own, text plates / title bars, and even System 7 Style window-making
graphics, from title bars to windows to control buttons. There are 13
different styles of buttons, 4 styles of text plates, and many styles, in
addition to modular text buttons, contain basic control pad buttons for
screens that are tight on space.
"1000 Buttons and Graphics, Too!!" is shareware, with a LOW fee of only
$5, giving you full access to 1.2 Megs of ready-to-go graphics. Stop wasting
time and money drawing each and every button and screen element by hand!
Just copy and paste out of this set and you're done, getting back to the
important part of your database, the functionality of it. If you're gonna
spend a lot of time making a database, spend it on functionality, not
graphics-making. Now you don't have to - here's 1000 buttons for you!

Under Construction - "1000 Buttons Volume 2 : Symbolic Buttons." THIS
IS A GENERAL CALL FOR ARTWORK!! Symbolic buttons are just that - no text,
just pictures, like my control pad buttons in this file. ANYONE who
contributes artwork that is used in the final release version of Volume 2
will receive : Full on-screen credit, and a free, registered copy of Volume
2. If there's enough response, I'll also put together Volume 3 : Screen
Elements and Backgrounds. Send all contributions, in either ResEdit, PICT,
GIF, JPEG, Clarisworks, or FileMaker format to [email protected].

Subject: [*] Eastgate Web Squirrel 1.0.3

The Eastgate Web Squirrel is a Macintosh program that keeps track of the
hundreds (or thousands) or URLs that everybody needs. Web Squirrel builds
spatial maps that replace simple lists, bookmarks, and bits of scrap
paper. Free test-drive copies of the Eastgate Web Squirrel are available
from

http://www.eastgate.com/squirrel/

Release 1.0.3b3 offers many enhancements, small and large, that make Web
Squirrel swifter, smaller, and more agile. These include:

GUIDANCE: PlainTalk support lets Web Squirrel describe (or comment on) web
pages as it fetches them and while they are loading

FEEDBACK: Innovative Balloon Help makes it easy to explore large
information farms.

AGENTS: Keyword search and new, faster updates make agents more powerful
and more convenient

This test release expires March 1.

Many Web Squirrel refinements were suggested by Web Squirrel users -- many
thanks to all, and keep those ideas coming. Let us know, too, how you're
using Web Squirrel!

Subject: [*] FileIndexer 1.3

An update to previous versions of FileIndexer, a utility to index groups
of text files so that you can search for words in them fast.

What's new since version 1.2?

- Added barber pole display to thermometers during unknown length
operations
- Faster memory allocator for the TMiniFile class (thanks Jim Coplien!)
- Shows found word in context.
- Made the text drag and dropable
- Removed all shorts to get rid of 32k word limits.
- Switched to Metrowerks CW 8 (code got smaller by about 80k!).
- Enter now searches same as return (thanks geo)
- Added scroll to found word preference, bumped file version
- After a successful search, select the first hit in the list
- You can now drop a folder or file anywhere in the window to index.
- Optimised indexing slightly by removing an object new/delete each time
- Removed appleScript support for now due to overhead
(this will come back in the database version).
- Removed some unused resources.
- Built with symbols off to reduce size.

My plan is that this will be the last version that holds the index purely
in memory. I'm working on a disk based system so I can handle huge
amounts of text.

Subject: [*] Grant's CGI Framework 1.0b13

Grant's CGI Framework is a framework for writing 68K & PowerPC Macintosh
CGI applications in C. The user of the framework only needs to modify
one function (located in its own file) to produce a custom CGI - all the
other details can be left to the framework. However, there are numerous
options for customization available for those who need them.

Macintosh programming experience is not required (although it helps) -
but at least a basic knowledge of the ANSI C language is required.

New in beta 13:

* Easier menu customization
* A number of new utility functions
* Many bug fixes (some critical fixes)

Features:
* 68K and PowerPC native support
* Multi-Threaded (thread support requires Apple's Thread Manager
or System 7.5)
* Automatic html form parsing with easy function access to
individual fields
* Supports Asynchronus CGI (ACGI)
* Supports ListSTAR trigger and action events
* AppleScriptable for testing without a server or MacTCP
* Can optionally compile as faceless background-only application
* Numerous configuration options for optimizing to your specific needs
* Option for self-quitting after specified idle time
* Significant performance increase over scripts such as those in
AppleScript and Perl
* Metrowerks and Symantec project files
* If you use it to write free applications, it's free to use.
Otherwise, there is a price.

Subject: [*] MailSniffer v1.1.0

MailSniffer is a minimal POP client that interacts with any POP3 server to
count the messages in a user's mailbox. MailSniffer will optionally list
the subjects and senders of either new or all messages. MailSniffer can
also optionally perform several actions, such as run a script, when the
mailbox contains more than a user specified number of messages. For
example, MailSniffer could be configured to run a script that displays a
dialog box when there are more than 9 messages in a mailbox. MailSniffer
can be configured to sniff automatically at a user specified interval.
MailSniffer is fully asynchronous and supports multiple simultaneous
sniffs. If a user has multiple email accounts, MailSniffer can
automatically sniff all of them at the same time and execute different
scripts for each of them.

Improvements in v1.1.0 include:

* Support for Internet Config
* Optionally sniff for new mail only
* Saves all text info in a scrambled format for security (sorry I didn't do
this for v1.0.0)
* Two new trigger actions: Save Log and Clear Log

Subject: [*] Sleeper 2.0

Sleeper 2.0 is a major update to Sleeper, and should replace any existing
copies in the archives.

Sleeper is a control panel for desktop Macintoshes and Power Macintoshes
that puts your system to sleep, thus saving energy and reducing noise
levels in your work area. Sleeper can dim the screen, power down Energy
Star compliant monitors, and spin down disk drives after periods of
inactivity. Separate sleep times can be set for the various features, and
a hotkey can be used to put your Mac to sleep on demand.

Version 2 adds support for both IDE disks and Energy Star monitors, PowerPC
native SCSI code, a new user interface, and many features requested by
users of version 1.1.

What's new in Sleeper 2.0:

- New features:
* Support for IDE disk drives
* PowerMac native SCSI support
* Support for multiple SCSI buses
* Energy Star support
* Improved user interface
* A helper application to activate sleep

- Enhancements to existing features:
* Sleep/wake disks individually or all at once
* Adjustable brightness for screen saver
* Switch to turn off screen saver "hot corners"
* Use of the keyboard LEDs to indicate when attention is needed
* Prompt to turn off sleep for disks that are powered off or disconnected
* Switched to Kagi Shareware for registration processing

- Bug fixes:
* Sleeper now respects changes made by the Gamma control panel
* The cursor now hides itself when dimming the screen on PCI PowerMacs
* Sleeper will no longer hang if you power up a disk drive and try
to mount it with SCSI Probe while other disks are asleep

- For the adventurous:
* A hidden feature in Sleeper will spin down hard disks when
they're dragged to the trash or on shutdown. This can be useful
if you have external disks that you use infrequently or if you
set your Macintosh to automatically shut down and want the
external disk to spin down. See the "Read Me" file.

Subject: [*] URL Clerk 1.1, a URL filer/launcher

What's New in URL Clerk 1.1?
* Improved compatibility with System 7.1.
* The File menu is rearranged somewhat, with some added features.
* Supports the launching of Aladdin's CyberFinder bookmarks.
* Fixed some errors in the handling of memory.
* Probably some other stuff I can't remember right now.

URL Clerk is a URL filer/launcher. I'm not going to detail all of it's
features here, as it provides comprehensive Balloon Help, which should
hopefully explain everything. Briefly, though, here are some features:

* URLs are stored in standard files, so they could be placed in the Apple
Menu for easy access.

* Any text or clipping file that contains a valid URL can be dragged onto
URL Clerk, and the URL will be opened (or the file can be dragged onto the
included Bookmarker application, which will turn it into a URL Clerk file).

* URL Clerk supports manual URL entry. This is useful when, for example,
somebody posts a URL without the or prefix, meaning you
can't command-click on it to launch it (command clicking on URLs is a
feature offered by the excellent NewsWatcher program and the similarly
excellent ICeTEe extension). You can, however, copy it to the clipboard,
type the appropriate prefix in URL Clerk's "New URL=8A" dialog, and paste th=
e

Dear Digest readers,
This seems to be a week for questions! This time it is about Stuffit
Deluxe 3.5 that I would get from MacMall. Is this the same Stuffit that
has zip, gzip, .cpt, .sea support that I've heard has a Stuffit Engine and
DropStuff Expander?
I would like to finally get the full version of Stuffit. Is that what I'd
get if I spent $79 for Stuffit Deluxe/Spacesaver?
Also will it support segmented PKZIP files to recombine and expand on a
Macintosh? Which version of PKZIP for the PC supports this?

Thank you.

Dear Michael:

I have a Performa 637 CD with an internal IDE drive. In the system CD

assume your

First thing I'd try is to reset the Serial port, there should be an
appropriately named file in these archives
If not, I'd reinstall a clean copy of Config PPP, MacTCP and their auxiliary

of these-they *do* seem to corrupt easily).
Next I'd try zapping the pram, using TechTool 1.09.
Last Resort-run the computer off of an external hard drive-if it works then,
it may be time to reinstall the system.....

During the Christmas holiday, I had similiar problems to what you are
describing with my PB 520. First, I could not use my new 28.8 modem that
I got as a present but I could still print to my printers. Then I
couldn't do either. I bought the PB in for repairs and the shop replaced
the entire motherboard. Thank God I renewed my AppleCare warranty last
year.

I attributed the eventual crash of the motherboard to using the PB with
the cover closed, without the legs down while hooked-up to an external
monitor, keyboard, mouse, HD, CD-ROM Drive and other items (boy, do I
need a desktop computer :->). I figure the internal heat build-up was the
major contributing factor to it's demise. Now, to vent the heat, I always
open the lid after start-up.

Hope your problems are not so serious.

Yes, Gib, you are right - e-mail modules can send only the "Generic Letters",
not "Fax Letters". The only way to send a fax is to attach a fax (or text, or

But - we will support sending Fax Letters directly, too - in few weeks.

Subject: Can a hard drive be "locked"?

Yesterday I came home to a flashing question mark on a floppy. My husband
said that Colonization (a game, badly ported for Macs) had crashed and that
that is what he was faced with upon restart. I restarted off of disk tools
and the following happened:

1. At first, the hard drive icon/window did not show up on the desktop.
2. I opened "Disk First Aid" and a dialog popped up which said the "disk"
was unreadable (referring to the hard drive) and asked if I wanted to
initialize. I pressed "Cancel".
3. After pressing cancel, the hard drive's window was drawn onto the
screen. Lucky me, I put the valuable files onto a Zip disk.
4. I then proceeded to try to run Disk First Aid and MacTools Pro.

-Disk First Aid said the disk was damaged but it couldn't repair it because
it was "locked".
-MacTools Pro refused to run saying the disk was "locked" and that I should
unlock the disk and try again.

The only way around it was to initialize the disk and start from scratch. I
know such problems are inevitable when you have multiple crashes but cannot
understand all the "locked disk" messages which made it impossible to run a
repair utility.

I'm using a PowerPC 6200/75 with 32 MB of RAM. This model is only available
outside of the US so I'm not sure of the type of internal hard disk it
uses. Any comments regarding what happened and how to "unlock" the disk
should this happen again would be very appreciated.

We have a 1GB hard drive on our PowerMac at work (Power Computing Power
100), with the same "problem." Most of our commonly-used files are small,
so we would benefit greatly from partitioning the drive.

However, I haven't been able to do that because -- duh! -- the system is
running on that volume. Catch-22. There's only one floppy drive, and I
can't create a System 7.5 startup disk and still have room for
Silverlining. (In fact, I don't believe 7.5 will fit on a floppy any more,
period, even with a minimum install.) And if I _were_ able to boot from a
floppy, and tried to run Silverlining from the HD, it would tell me I can't
partition it because Silverlining was running on the HD. Catch-22^2. :/

I _could_ boot from a System 7.5.1 CD-ROM (our user group has one, but I
don't know if it has the correct enabler for a Power 100), put Silverlining
in the floppy drive, and partition the drive that way. However, I believe
Silverlining will require me to format the hard drive if I try to divide it
into partitions, and I don't have a way to back up 500 MB of files.

The hard drive did come with FWB's partitioning software, but it won't let
me partition the drive either, for the same reasons. Why on earth
would Power Computing include partitioning software that can't be used?

Oh, to be so close and yet so far! Advice, please? TIA.

Actually, you can and you should. If you read closely the documents
accompanying Silverlining you'll find out that it is recommended you should
run if from the floppy drive, rather than from a device on the SCSI bus. As to
how to make a boot floppy with 7.5 and Silverlining check LaCie's homepage
(www.lacie.com), they have a link to a document describing how to do it.

Alternatively you could do this: get from info-mac the Substitute 1.6 package;
copy onto a floppy the system from the Disk Tools folder on your CD-ROM; copy
the "Finder" from the Substitute package on the same floppy; put system and
finder in the same folder, and you're in business. You've got enough space to
put Silverlining on the bootup floppy.

Partitioning a drive means re-initializing (not re-formatting) the drive,
and that means deleting everything on the drive. There's no way around it. And
if you have no way to back up 500MB of files, you're in trouble. Computer
users are divided in two groups: those who've lost data, and those who haven't
yet. Watch out.

Subject: How Can I Create a Universal Boot Disk/Zip Cartridge for All Macs?

As mentioned in a separate post, I would like to use my Zip drive as a
recovery tool for crashed Macs: boot the afflicted Mac from the Zip drive
and run diagnostic software from that cartridge, so I don't have to make
any unnecessary changes to the contents of the main hard drive.

Many Macs require special enablers or special versions of the System
software in order to run. I would like to create a "universal" system disk
or Zip cartridge which will boot any Mac, either desktop or laptop, from a
Plus on up to the latest Power Macs. Ideally, this same disk would contain
all my diagnostic software.

I know for a fact that I cannot achieve this on a single floppy: I would
need at least several, perhaps a couple dozen, because System 7.x plus an
enabler or two almost totally fills a 1.4MB floppy. And even then, I
wouldn't be able to get any recovery software on it.

Likewise, I doubt I could achieve it with a Zip cartridge: the newer Macs
refuse to run on anything less than System 7.5, and I believe there are
Macs (Pluses & SEs, for example) that refuse to run on anything _over_
System 6.0.x or 7.1, primarily because they don't have the RAM.

Can I create a Zip cartridge with three system folders (6.0.8, 7.1.2, and
7.5.2, or whatever are most current), and switch between them _at startup_
by holding down some key combination? Or would I first have to attach it to
my PowerBook and disable one or more of those systems manually?

Can I put more than one Enabler in the same system folder, or will they
choke on each other? Can I use aliases of Enablers (so I don't have to
waste the disk space twice, once for 7.1.2 and once for 7.5.2), or must the
Enablers in the System folder be the original items? Do various Performas
require the 7.1p or whatever, or is there a universal 7.1.x which boots all
Macs except those which require 7.5?

The more I think about it, I may be better off with a bunch of boot
floppies, each configured for a particular Mac or two, and each containing
the Zip driver as well, so I can boot from a floppy and still access the
diagnostic software on the Zip.

Has anyone out there in Info-Mac-land faced this problem before? If so, how
did you solve it? TIA.

I had the same problem last week when installing our site-license MacTCP

TokenRing and SNMP systems (I don't know what the latter is--hope I have

2.0.6 gave me the same error message you report.

I discovered that going back and doing an install that included the
Token- and SNMP-to-MacTCP pieces allowed the patch to work. I don't know
if this will help folks who are getting this pre-packaged in the Inter-

Subject: Microsoft Basic

I was just sorting through so old disks that I had from about 6 years back
. On one of those disks I found that I had a copy of Microsoft Basic
Version 2.00 . I just tried to run it (I used to be able to run it on
system 6.0.3 , I am now on a newer machine running system 7.0.1) and it
crashed my system and sent my machine into a loop of crash restart and then
crash again , I eventually had to manually eject the disk from the drive .
Now I would like to get this program running again , so I was wondering if
anyone knows if there are any updaters that would update it up enough to
run on system 7.0.1 ? Is this program still produced ? If there are no
updaters online for this program , is there any chance that I might be able
to get an update through Microsoft , and if so does anyone know who I
should contact and their email address ? Thanks for any help that you can
lend .

Subject: password protecting a dye-sub printer

hi,

we have a kodak color ease dye-sub printer directly hooked up to the
campus ethernet. we'd like to somehow password protect it so everybody
can't waste the paper and ink from all over campus.

We can't do it through the driver since anybody can use a laserwriter
driver on their own computer. And this has to work for macs, Wintels, and
workstations. Any suggestions?

thanks.

Try turning off AppleTalk in the Chooser. Also (I presume you've done
this): try turning the modem on and off, try jiggling and re-inserting the
cables, and try rebooting: I had the same problem on my PB 540 yesterday,
and rebooting fixed it.

Subject: Performa Global Village Modem on LC III; AOL Graphics Nixer Program

Reply-To: [email protected]

I'm posting this for a friend with a Performa 6115CD and a Global Village
14.4 modem. She recently upgraded to a 28.8, as I understand it, and wants
to give the 14.4 to her father, who has an LC III and a 2400-baud modem.
However, the Global Village modem bundled with Performas appears to be a
special variety with no external power cord and a 9-pin serial cable; it
draws power directly from the Mac and therefore won't work with the LC III.
Is there a way to modify the Global Village modem to work with an LC III,
or is this modem limited to Performas?

And in a related question, her father has an AOL account, and it can be
frustrating waiting for those graphics to load through a 2400-baud modem. I
seem to recall a program called "Art Valve" or "Art Hopper" or something,
which tricks AOL into thinking the graphics have already loaded, and
therefore doesn't waste time trying to get them again. Where can she find
that program?

Please reply to her directly at if possible. I've set
the Reply-To: header accordingly, but I've never tried it from Eudora and
it may not work. TIA from all three of us!

Subject: PLW300 on a network (C)

I've once again proven that I'm not very smart. Very depressing. But one
or more of y'all might benefit from my latest idiocy, so I'll pass the
info on.

Virginia Tech is developing a wonderful new Human Resources Information
System. Those who must use the new HRIS must have a Mac capable of doing
something useful with it. Our dept secy's IIci was deemed incapable of
same, so she got a new Mac and printer freebies from central admin. Be
still, my heart. The new Mac is a 7100 with an obscene amount of main
memory and HD space & a 17-in monitor. The printer is a Personal LW 300.

My initial response? Nice computer. Too much monitor. For the money, a
smaller monitor would allow a decent printer. I was less than pleased
with a printer that ran only from the serial port. Far too dedicated to
a single machine. I was ready to send the printer back. Then I hit the
chooser on Sharon's machine for LW300 and asked for setup. Setup offered
sharing. Say what? I accepted the offer.

I went back to my own machine, threw in the LW300 driver and was almost
successful in printing to the LW300. Printmonitor was explicit. You must
have the PrinterShare extension to access that printer. I installed that
extension from the LW300's distribution disks. Hoo boy was that goofy. It
worked, but it made my startup sequence ga-ga. A rich visual experience.

Just for the hallibut, I went to an Apple ftp site and found a new and
wonderful PrinterShare extension. Version 1.1.2 for those of you taking
notes. Works without the startup weirdness.

And that is in addition to that Appletalk-only printer available to your
ethernet system via the Laserwriter Bridge. Our office net sees my PLW/NT
as long as my Mac is fired up. LW Bridge is good for one printer per zone
and I thought that was it. Not quite. If Sharon's machine is fired up, we
can all use her LW300, too. Neat!

Granted, Virginia Tech did not provide us the wherewithall to make the
PLW300 useful to the rest of us. But Apple did. I like that. I am quite
happy that my original evaluation of the serial PLW300 was as wrong as
it could have been.

Subject: Problem PB 540 and Deskwriter - Please help

I recently encountered the following problem - please help to find a solution:

I have a PB 540 running 7.5.1. and a DeskWriter (one of the first models,
still without apple talk - non colour). My PB 540 suffered from an error
concerning the external monitor port and I had the main board exchanged
>From apple (already the third new board in now!). This weekend now we got
the machine back and my wife tried to print a document and it refused. I
checked the configuration and found nothing wrong. The guys at apple only
had touched the hardware and the software was still as before the board
exchange. The PB showed some very strange behaviour:

You could command a program to print a document and then watch the HP print
monitor, in which the document appeared, but it never printed and it never
complained about a non connected printer etc. The print monitor also was
extremely slow - it took half a minute from a cancel command to the
emptying of the queue. If I turned the printer off, the print monitor
complained, but if I only switched the printer to offline, the print
monitor did not recognize and did not complain.

Suspecting the PB's printer port being damaged (with the third main board
in I don'd trust this machine any more) I took the PB to my office and
connected it to a laser writer IIg (switching apple talk to ON) with the
cable I normally use with the DeskWriter. It printed.

Can it be, that the printer port has a damage, that causes it to fail in
non apple talk mode and makes it work in apple talk mode??

Thanks for hints

After installing System 7.5.1 on my PowerBook 145B I've noticed that it
doesn't switch off the backlighting of the display anymore. Even with a
fresh system and no additional cdevs and inits installed. After the time in
the according Powerbook control panel has gone by, the light get's darker a
tiny fraction, but one has to watch the change to realise the difference.
It seems to be no hardware problem because it works fine when I boot with
7.1. No expert I asked before had an idea for this myst(ery).

Does anybody know a cure for that strange behavior? Thanks in advance.

Subject: Rescued items with no crash

About a week ago the power in our apartment blacked out while my wife was
working on our PowerPC7100. After the power came back on the next day I
restarted and used NUtils to check out the disk. No errors other than a
file with a bad creation date and everythng seems to be running fine.
However, lately, every time I start up the machine a document with the same
nonsense name shows up in the trash as a "rescued item."

If I double click the document Word tries to open it, but then quits with a
type 1 error. If I trash the document it comes back as a rescued item when
I restart. As I said, no crashes now, everything seems to work fine. No
errors that Norton Utilities can track down. Any ideas ?? TIA!

Subject: Seeking Desktop Icon Alternative: Drag Thing, Tiles, etc.

I recently posted regarding my problem with desktop icons rearranging after
my external monitor is detached. I've decided that, since the main reason I
have those icons there is so I can drag-and-drop downloaded things onto
various decoders, unstuffers, openers, etc., a simple icon-bar/tile
program/palette thing/whatever would be an easier solution.

I've never used one of these before, however, and I know there are about 8
billion different kinds out there, some commercial, some shareware or
freeware. FWIW, I'm on a PB 540, 12/240, 7.1.1. I'd like to have a little
palette at the bottom of the Finder, which will stay there all the time
unless I specifically move or close it. I'd only need the icons at the
Finder level: I _don't_ want a floating palette hovering over all of my
applications. Is there a quick way to figure out which program
(shareware/freeware preferred) is best for my needs? Thanks for your
advice.

I suppose you're running a German version of MacOS. If so you'll have two
versions of the Control Panel for setting sound volume, one being the
german one and the other named 'Sound'. Both will produce a preference file
with it's own name and appearantly, the system choose one over the other
and set everything accordingly at startup.

Personally, I keep both versions of the Control panel (just in case) but
only use the localized and I have never encountered the problem that you &
many others have described.

If you belong to an Apple-authorized Mac User Group, you can get a
reconditioned (i.e., like new) StyleWriter II from the User Group
Connection (800-350-4842) for $149+s/h, or a reconditioned StyleWriter 1200
(color) for $229+s/h. You might check into that after you get a repair
quote. FWIW, my only connection with the UGC is as a satsified customer. :)

No. Just open the "memory" control panel and turn 32bit addressing on.
Without it, your Mac's system can only recognize 8 mB of RAM, no matter
what is installed. The "surplus" RAM is shown as being used by system
software.

Best wishes, Christian.
