Subject: [*] CacheBGone! A Netscape cache eliminator

What it does:
This is a simple, small, freeware applescript written for the
express purpose of automatically getting rid of the Netscape "Cache =9F"
folder, and the "Global History" file.

Why?
Because I like Netscape to start new every time I load it up, and
re-load every link in case changes have been made. By getting rid of the
"Global History" file I also ensure that the links I used last time do not
show up in Netscape as having been already visited. I usually run this
script right after I'm done surfing with Netscape. See the Readme file for
other uses and more info.

What you need:
System 7.5 or later. It will run faster depending on the machine
that you own. You *can* run it on 7.1, but you will need a scriptable
finder, and applescript installed. I do not know exactly where to get these
items for 7.1, and will ignore requests for information about them. If you
*do* have this information, please forward it to me, and I will include it
in any other related releases.

Subject: [*] DragThing 1.5, an application dock

DragThing is an application dock designed to tidy up the icons littering
your desktop. Simply drag an application from the Finder onto an empty
square in a dock and then drag documents onto it as normal. Double-click
a docked application to launch it or bring it to the front. In addition,
the docks can contain files, folders, disks and servers and there is
also a option to display the currently running processes in a special
dock.

It requires at least System 7.5 (or 7.1 with Drag & Drop, AppleScript
and the Scriptable Finder) and a Macintosh with a minimum of a Motorola
68020 or PowerPC 601 processor. The application is distributed as a fat
binary with both regular 68K and native PowerPC versions included.

DragThing may be used freely - all I ask is that if you really like
DragThing and keep using it, you send me something cool in return. See
the manual for more details on what is considered cool and how DragThing
may be distributed.

Subject: [*] EasyMail 1.5

EasyMail is a simple, easy-to-use, yet effective electronic mail
program/system for use with a LAN (local area network). Its purpose is to
provide inter-office communications for example within an organization.

EasyMail provides the following features:
- easy to setup and use
- seemless use with other applications (no inits, cdevs to install)
- message encryption
- up to 99999 users allowed on a registered server (when registered and a
license pack is purchased)
- uses AppleShare to manage its file structure, so its secure and effective
- PowerPC native and optimized for 680x0 (FAT binary)
- requires NO server software to be run to manage mail/files (simply
install and make sure the server machine is on)
- includes AppleGuide help files for on-line help
- Update function (to provide an easy way to update your copy or to fix bugs)
- low cost (only US$10 to register the server, and US$10 for a 99999 user
pack)
- customizable help files
- support for sending files and folders as well as mail to users

NOTE: EasyMial is not like Eudora, SMTP, SNMP or POP. EasyMail is similar
to PowerTalk, CE Softwares' QuickMail, or cc:Mail (it works over LocalTalk,
EtherNet, or any compatible AppleTalk/AppleShare file system), yet costs a
fraction of the cost.

Requirements:
EasyMail requires MacOS(TM) version 7.0.x or higher, a minimum of 4 MB of
System RAM (2 MB of application RAM) for color, or 3 MB of System RAM (1 MB
of application RAM) for B&W. A LAN (local area network) is recommended,
but not required. EasyMail also requires a minimum of 5 MB of free hard
drive space for the server to operate. System 7 File Sharing is required
(EasyMail will not work AppleShare File Server).

EasyMail was written by me, Cam Giesbrecht, over a period of 1 and 1/2
years (I wrote it by myself). It was written entirely in HyperCard
(although it is a stand-alone application), with the help of some
third-party XCMDs and XFCNs, as well as some I wrote myself. Don't dismiss
this application just because it's written in HyperCard - try it!

The attached is a update to my Freeware, Stats based NFL Football Sim.
Please replace any previous versions.

This is a final pre-super bowl update. This version fixes a problem with
the latest versions of Macintalk (from Plaintalk 1.4.1) which tend to "spell
out" uppercase text instead of pronouncing it (I now fork uppercase to the
screen for readability and lowercase to Macintalk). Also increased cursor
responsiveness when the computer coaches both sides in non "auto" mode.

It is a conversion of a CC3 program with some added Mac-centric features.
The current NFL season inspired me to upload it based on the paucity of
existing (free) football programs.

Subject: [*] IGS Twisted v0.0.1

This is one of the coolest modules ever created. It will turn your eyes
inside out...

It starts with a line of 3D tiles. Slowly, they twist around collapse,
rotate, vortex, swing, shift, scale, and invert in a way that mesmorizes
every onlooker. The fluid motion of these little tiles is amazing.

This works best with a PowerMac. I included a fat version for the
PowerMac/68k and then another version for the 68k w/FPU.

I recommend a PowerMac, but it if you want to run it on a 68k machine, use

MacPhone is a handy shareware application that mimics a traditional modern
phone. It has functions like, 12 speed dial memory which holds
informations about the subject like name, telephone number, address, e-mail
and a picture of the subject if wanted. Speed dial requires a modem and a
telephone hooked to the modem. When you press the speed dial (or dial
manually), you only need to pick up the telephone within 5 seconds, and
wait for a "carrier detection" (i.e. a person which answers). It has also
redial button, timer, calendar and it loga all calls made with the program,
with the date, time, phone number and subject. It can clear, export, import
and open a log file. It can also export names and phonenumbers into a text
file, for easy transportation or backup, which can be inported back in. In
addition to a standard phone it has a quick-dial button for an emergency
number, like an ambulance or what ever you desire.etc. in addition to a
standard phone. The program has a LCD (Liquid Crystal Display).

If there are any problems with my upload (uploaded .sit archive with
AppleSingle transfer method), then please notify me via e-mail.

Subject: [*] Matrix maker 2.5

This file contains the new version of "Matrix maker", a Macintosh
application designed for the easy creation and formatting of twelve-tone
matrices (12 x 12 arrays) used in the composition and/or analysis of
twelve-tone music. It will also allow the creation and formatting of 7 x 7,
6 x 6, and 5 x 5 matrices. This application is designed for use with
Microsoft Word for the Macintosh. The preferred MSW version is v 6.0.1, and
this package contains two AppleScript applications for the automatic
formatting with MSW 6.x of the data produced by the Matrix maker
application: 1) "Matrix formatter", which formats output that has been
produced by the user's manual activation of the "Matrix maker 2.5 (fat)"
application, and 2) "Matrix maker script", which automates the entire
process by opening the "Matrix maker 2.5 (fat)" application and then
successively performing the formatting steps without the necessity for any
user intervention other than entering the matrix specifications. The
package also includes stationery files that can be used with Microsoft Word
5.1 in the event that MSW 6.x is not available; in this case, the
formatting must be done manually, but the process is quite simple.

The "Matrix maker 2.5" folder consists of the following eight items:

1) the "Matrix maker 2.5 (fat)" application, a "fat" binary application
containing
both Macintosh 68K and PowerPC native code
2) a folder labeled "for MSW 6 users" (contains the Matrix formatter
AppleScript application)
3) a folder labeled "for MSW 5.1 users"
4) the Matrix maker script AppleScript application mentioned above
5) a sample output file labeled 'sample "matrix.txt"'
6) a sample output file labeled 'sample "header.txt"'
7) a SimpleText ReadMe file
8) a sample of the "finished product", labeled 'sample "matrix output"'.

Each of the two MSW folders contains the files necessary to use "Matrix
maker 2.5 (fat)" with the appropriate word-processing application.
Documentation in each folder, created in the appropriate Word application,
describes in detail the proper procedure in each case.

The automatic formatting scripts are designed to handle only 12 x 12, 7 x
7, 6 x 6, and 5 x 5 arrays. Matrices of any other size must be formatted
manually. Note that in order to use the AppleScript "Matrix formatter" or
"Matrix maker script" application, your computer must have System 7.5 or
later installed and the "Finder scripting extension" must be in the active
"Extensions" folder within your System Folder. The script application
automatically checks for both of these necessary items when it is launched.
The "Matrix maker 2.5 (fat)" application itself will, however, run on
systems earlier than System 7.5. If you have neither Word 5.1 nor Word 6.x,
you may still be able to use the "Matrix maker 2.5 (fat)" application, as
long as your word-processing application allows text-to-table conversions.

QuickReplace is an XFCN that allows you to find and replace all
occurences of a string in any valid HyperCard/SuperCard container
(variable, field). QuickReplace is case-sensitive and, unlike HyperCard,
distinguishes between accented characters (diacriticals) and their
non-accented counterparts
(for example: =E9e; =F1n, etc.).

QuickReplace will find and replace strings up to 255 characters in
length. If an optional fourth parameter is set to "TRUE", QuickReplace
will also return the number of "replacements" performed.

QuickReplace will also find and replace non-printing characters such as
carriage returns, tabs and line-feeds (see "Tips" below).

QuickReplace is provided as "AnyWare." That is, if you use it, please
let me know by sending "Anything" you have cluttering up your desktop: a
poem you've written, a picture of your dog, a program you've developed,
money, a postcard from your hometown etc. - just something to let me know

Subject: [*] ShowInitAndName

This is a complete package with everything you need to show icons at
startup and join the next generation of inits! The entire, fully documented
source code is included -- and is free to any programmer who wants it.

This next generation of inits display their filenames beneath their icon,
and are highlighted while they are active. Best of all, the operating
system can override their behavior, so your inits will remain current for
years to come.

*** BE WARNED! Many old inits rely on obsolete and incompatible code. There
are over a dozen different sources for displaying icons at startup, and
even Apple uses four different methods in System 7.5.2. The incompatibility
among these old inits is especially apparent with the next generation --
but the effect is only a visual nuisance.

There's no reason why everyone can't update their inits, especially since
the enclosed source code:

* Is compilable on both 680x0 and PowerPC
* Contains no hacks or assembly language
* Is compatible with System 6.0 to the present (7.5.2)
* Runs on Mac Plus to the present (Power Macintosh w/PCI)
* Includes sample projects for both Code Warrior and Think C

Please read the ShowInitAndName.h header file for complete details,
including a bibliography!

Subject: [A] 2 Macs 1 Printer

Regarding networking two Macs and a LaserWriter NTR:

I already have implemented such a solution in a two level apartment. The
LaserWriter NTR is a wonderful network Appletalk printer. I used the 2nd
set of 2 pair wires in the wall, made sure they were a closed circuit, and
added double phone plates in place of the old single ones. I now can have
my Macs in any room and the printer anywhere else. I used Farallon Phonenet
and Focus connectors. I like the Focus ones because they have internal
termination that you simply switch on and lights to indicate activity. Very
inexpensive too. You're looking at about $50 in connectors (three) and less
than $10 in phonewire which you probably have most of.

Here is an example diagram (use monospaced font to view it such as Courier):

| wire connected to printer ports on Macs and Appletalk port on NTR.
_ phone wire
* is a phonenet or focus connector
# is termination on the phonenet or switched on the focus connector
(normally you need to terminate the ends of the network)

3ft 50ft
____ ____________________________________________
# / \ / \ #
* * *
| | |
NTR Mac --> other room ---> Mac

With the printer as a network device, it will be connected through the
phonenet type connectors. It will be on the network, daisy chained to the
Mac next to it with the phone wire between phonenet connectors. The printer
ports are the Appletalk ports on the Macs. The NTR's serial port is the
Appletalk port (same one you are using already). This way, you don't have
to have the computer turned on next to the printer for the computer in the
other room to print to it. The printer becomes a "stand-alone" network
device. By the way, if you get an PeeCee - the NTR can have that hooked to
its parallel port at the same time and will switch automagically between
the two.

I took my setup a step farthur and purchased a 50ft outdoor phone cable
(round with good outer layer) and hooked my network out the window one
apartment down to a co-worker and setup his wiring as well so that we could
get to each other's Mac and he could use my printer. The only thing to
watch for is the physical distance between nodes (mac or printer) on the
wire and the total distance of the wire. The first is in hundreds of feet
(~500-~800 max) and the 2nd ~1500ft I think for phonenet if I remember what
I was told once.

I work with Macs and PeeCee's and there is nothing to networking Macs like
this. It's a joy.

Hope this helps,

-John Q.

Is there a software fix or a resource who can help me get connected? Any help

Subject: ethertalk & 5200

I recently installed an Asante ethernet card & software on a Performa

When I try to use the Network control panel to change from localtalk to
ethertalk I get a message that basically says "...error, can't change to
ethertalk...". I tried going through the extensions & turning them off and
on but I couldn't get a definitive fix. When I located two extensions that
seemed to be causing the problem I turned them off, restarted & then I
could set the Network control panel to ethertalk. But, when I restarted the
5200 again, with the "possibly offending" extensions still off, I couldn't
set the Network control panel to ethertalk! The error message is always the
same.

I tried several different things (reinstalling the drivers, disabling all
extensions, rebuilding the desktop...) but so far I can't get ethertalk
activated. ANY & ALL help would be much appreciated.

Dear Moderators,
Please post the following FAQ in /comm/info subdirectory of sumex with the
title of the above subject:

To owners of PowerMac 7200, 7500, 8500, 9500 here is a solution to those
terrible type 11 errors experienced with OpenTranport 1.0.8.

1. Get a Dynamic IP addressing account with all the gateway domain server
information from the provider, you may want to ask for a Compressed PPP
account with RARP addressing.
2. Clean install the system using the CD and Command-Sh-k at the startup of
opening the installer software.
3. Make sure you have OpenTransport 1.0.8 from ftp://ftp.support.apple.com,
install it and reboot.
4. Delete all non-Apple INITs, or archive them away in a .CPT, .SIT, or
.SEA file (clean install your system, and then install Open Transport
1.0.8).
5. Delete or archive the TCP/IP control panel and its corresponding
preference file in the System Folder::Preferences folder.
6. Delete or archive these extensions:
Open Tpt Internet Library
OpenTptInternetLib

7. Don't touch these extensions:
Open Tpt AppleTalk Library
Open Transport Library
OpenTptAppleTalkLib
OpenTransportLib.

8. Don't touch this Control Panel:
AppleTalk

9. Install MacPPP 2.0.1 or MacPPP 2.2.0a (available in the sumex mirror
archives).
Don't forget to set your TimeOut variable to at least 90 seconds,
and to setup your Connect Script. If you have trouble setting up your
connect script, please e-mail me at my address below. Also be sure no
other versions of PPP, PPP Preferences, Config PPP are on your machine when
you install it.
REBOOT your machine.

10. Install MacTCP 2.0.6.
Be sure to set it for Server addressing! Yes, this appears to work on
dynamic addressing servers that claim to use RARP. Strange but true of my
provider.
Gateway address and Domain Nameserver address is critical. The IP address
is set by the server.
REBOOT your machine.

This configuration appears to work fine with the following:

~ATM 3.8.2 from System CD-ROM's Adobe Acrobat 2.1
Conflict Catcher 3.0
PPPop 1.3.2
Square One 3.0
Alps Glidepoint 1.1
Netscape 2.0b6 with no additional plugins installed*
Eudora 1.5.3
Fetch 3.0
Internet Config 1.2
IceTee 1.2b1
Virex 5.6.1
QuickTime 2.1
ClickThereItIs (installed with Ze at the beginning of the filename)
Directory Assistance II (installed with Ze at the beginning of the filename)
Aaron 1.1.3 (installed with ~ at the beginning of the filename.

Hayes Accura 14.4 k bps modem.
PowerMac 7200, 24 MB of RAM, Virtual Memory off.
Server at internet service provider is a SunOS 4.1 with AT&T Teledyn 28.8 k bps
modems.

* MacroMedia Shockwave 68k and Tumbleweed plugins both have caused Type 11
and or Unimplemented trap errors.

If anyone succeeds in eliminating Type 11 errors with the above
configuration with a newer version of OpenTransport, please let me know.
Server I might add has two name server addresses it recommends putting in
MacTCP, the first of which has its radio button checked.

Standard disclaimers apply.
Hope this helps.

if anyone knows who wrote the program and where I can contact them and if
there is an updater for it to run on system 7.0 ? My final question is ,
about another game about 7 or 8 years ago , it was somethinbg about a tank
, from what I recall the game gave a side view of a tank which you
controled , you would go up and dowen uneven ground and shoot at enemy
tanks and chopers and other obsticles , but you only had so many shots and
so much fuel or something like that and you had to make it from fueling
base to fueling base . This game was also black and white , I am looking
for any information on it , particularly a title and information about
whether it was shareware or commercial , who wrote the program and if
possible a place to get it , if someone has a copy . Once again any help in
this area would be appreciated .
