Subject: [*] CommuniGate FaxSender 1.8
FaxSender is a print (Chooser) driver to use with the CommuniGate System. It
employs the same Address Books panel as the CommuniGator application, and it
can be used with any application that supports printing. When "FaxSender" is
selected in the Chooser, using the Print command in any application results
in "printing" of the open document on a remote fax machine.
In order to avoid switching between your regular printer driver and
FaxSender, you can have the "FaxSwitcher" extension installed. After you
installed FaxSwitcher, select the FaxSender in the Chooser, and you'll see
the Option button which allows you to set the special-keys combination. You
can set a combination, select your regular printer driver again, and close
the Chooser.
Now, if you press the selected key combination when choosing Page Setup or
Print from an application File menu, the FaxSender driver replaces your
regular printer driver and allows you to fax from an application without
going through the Chooser.
There are two versions of the print driver: a non-networkable (FaxSender) and
a networkable one (FaxSender Network). If you plan to send faxes from the
same computer that runs the CommuniGate Server, you should install the
FaxSender driver on that computer. Install the FaxSender Network on all other
computers on your network.
To install this print driver, drag the the FaxSender/FaxSender Network and
the FaxSwitcher icons and drop them on the System Folder icon. Finder will
route them to the Extensions folder.

Excellent! CopyPaste is a must have piece of shareware for all editors,
writers and anyone that uses the clipboard. CopyPaste gives your Mac 10
clipboards, clipboard processing, application switching, tag and drop and
many other features. Its a simple to use utility thats always there. You
find yourself using it all the time and wondering why apple didn't
include it. ***** Best Shareware Utility of Jan 96 MacWorld *****
One of the early wonders of the Mac was its revolutionary ability to do
copy and paste across various applications. Unlike other areas in the
Mac's system and software that have changed and progressed over the
years, copy and paste has not evolved. How many times have you found
yourself going back and forth copying in one application and pasting in a
different application, wishing to yourself that you could copy 5-10 items
at a time, then go to another application and paste each of these items.
Now you can.

There have been some recent references to doing a "clean rebuild" of the
desktop, which involves deleting the old desktop data files. I think my

consequences will be. For example, would I lose all the position, style,

I could have SWORN you could open and close the drive with the AppleCD
Audio Player, but mine sure doesn't do that now. (No audio CD in the
drive.) I can't find any other software that does, either.
I guess I'm lucky, because my drive tray closes itself when you gently push
it. (I don't have to snake my finger around to find the button.) I have
the normal CD 300i that came with the 6100/66's early last year.
I've seen other people complain about this problem. Did Apple have a batch
of bad CD drives, or did they cheap out on some models?

Subject: [Q] MacTools Pro 4.0 problem
Folks,
(I hope I've sent this to the proper email address.)
I've read the Info-Mac digest for years and have received answers to
many questions I never had to ask, because someone else asked before
I needed to. Finally, I have a question I haven't seen before.
I use MacTools Pro 4.0 for backups and maintenance on my a Quadra 660AV
running System 7.1. I have used the software for a year without ever
trying the FastCopy tool. This weekend I thought I'd try it.
When I try to launch FastCopy, I get an error window that displays
error code -51 with a sentence indicating it can't find a file.
Another sentence indicates to look for the file in another location.
The name of the missing file is not displayed.
I tried a few things (listed below) in a (mis-guided?) effort to
fix the problem with no success. I still get the same error window.
1. I rebuilt the desktop using the option-Clover keys at startup.
2. I used the MacTools Pro Installer to remove and custom install FastCopy.
3. I rebuilt the desktop using MacTools Pro.
4. I used the MacTools Pro Installer to remove and custom install all
parts of MacTools Pro that I use. I don't use Disklight or Trashback.
If anyone has suggestions, please reply to:
[email protected]
I will summarize and reply to the digest.
Thanks,
Tom Duke

Subject: _StripAddress freezes and bombs--why?
My PowerBook Duo 230 been experiencing an inordinate number of freezes and
bombs lately which MacsBug indicates occur at _StripAddress. Can anyone
offer any suggestions?
System 7.5.1, 12 megs, RamDoubled to 32 megs, plenty of INITs.
I can't determine any particular application; sometimes MacsBugs says it's
Finder, and other times it's various other applications. I don't know if
it's a system, application, or hardware problem. It occurs both DuoDocked
and SCSI MicroDocked.
It also occurs (less frequently) on my SE/30 with 7.1.5 and a minimum of
extensions.
Norton 3.1.2, MacTools Pro 4, and Disk First Aid all say the disk is fine,
though sometimes the bombs cause disk structure problems which the
utilities can repair. Another run of all 3 utilities then comes up clean,
and a day or so later, the problem recurs.
Any help you can offer will be very much appreciated. I'll be glad to
summarize to the list, if you'll reply direct to me.
Cheers!

Florin, on a very similar system --LC475/OS 7.5.1/Apple 600e CD-ROM
drive/CD-ROM Setup 5.1.2/Apple Menu Options 1.0.2 trashed after install and
replaced with Now Menus 5.01a (I've had 'bad luck' with 5.02)--I _don't_
have this happen.
Which suggests, as I'd imagine you're already suspecting, that the
perpetrator will be Apple Menu Options 1.0.2, in some constellation with
CD-ROM Setup (+ other extensions in the picture). In other words, this is
software, not hardware...
To confirm this, I've seen similar behaviour from munged copies of Now
Menus over the years I've used it. But replacing Now Menus & Now Toolbox
usually fixed things; which I gather isn't the case in your experiments
with Apple Menu Options + CD Setup.

Ok, I changed the SCSI ID of my external AppleCD 300e to 1 and the
internal AppleCD 600i is set at 3. Note that the internal devices are on
Bus 0 and the external devices are on Bus 1 as the PowerMac 8500 has two
SCSI busses. Even with this setting, the Apple CD Player still only
looks at the internal drive.
Without knowing any additional information about the hardware or
software, this automatic selection of the internal CD player is pretty
stupid. If you play CDs on your machine, why use the faster drive? It
just doesn't make sense...

Subject: CHK error
Hi Mark,
Thanks very much for your response to my question (below) about a CHK error.
I'm not much of a techie, so I had never heard of range-checking before (&
that's no wonder--"*wink*wink*"). An earlier post suggested trashing the
Finder's prefs, but that didn't work for me. The dialog box for the CHK error
says it's a system error, so I guess I'll have to do a clean reinstall as you
suggested--although I don't consider it "relatively low labor."
reinstalling the system in the past, I've saved the Prefs folder because it's
such a nuisance resetting *everything* to just the way I like it. Is that a
mistake in these circumstances? Well, maybe I can at least avoid going
through the control panel/extension routine looking for corrupt files or
conflicts. BTW, Norton Disk Doctor doesn't show any problems.
With much appreciation for your help & advice,

>error, but I'm not sure about that.>>A CHK error normally means that a program was compiled with range-checking
turned on, and the range check failed (e.g. the program created an array of10
items and then tried to do something with the 11th (non-existent) item). I
say "normally means," because shipping software is usually compiled with
range-checking off, for better performance (supposedly the software engineers
made sure the program never *makes* out-of-range addressing errors, and so
the range-checking is not needed--*wink*wink*). That's why a CHK error is
not usually seen.
If you do see a CHK error, the most likely cause is corrupted software, but
watch out: if the dialog box says it's Finder that had the error, it very
often will be some control panel or extension that is the real culprit. If
you have the Install Me CD for System 7, you may want to begin by
re-installing System 7, since that's relatively low labor, but if it's a
control panel/extension, you probably will want to take the time to go
through Conflict Catcher (or the equivalent utility in Now Utilities) and
check for conflicts and/or corrupted extensions.

What with getting Leslye a gigabyte HD, AutoDoubler seemed superfluous,
in addition to being a suspect in several of her system problems, so I

I ran across a deader that Disk Doubler won't expand. My old SuperDoubler

Any of y'all have a copy of DD Verify/Repair you could send me? Who

Select the document(s) you want to print.
Pull the File menu to Page Setup and set it up.
Now just Print (Command-P or via menu).
ClarisWorks will open, give you *one* Print dialog, and get to work.
Note: All your docs have to have the exact same Page Setup for this to work.

Minor correction: You _can_ select multiple items in the Finder even
if they are in separate folders. The key is to open up a window for a
parent folder that includes all the folders you want to select files from.
Switch to a list view. Open subfolders with the arrows on the left margin
until all the files you want to select are visible (even if you have to
scroll - that's ok). Select all the files you want to print by holding the
shift key as you click on them. You can then print by selecting Print from
the File menu.
>2) Install QuickDraw GX which includes Desktop printing capabilities.
>Can't comment how it works, because I don't have it installed.
>
If you want to be able to drag them all to an icon and print, you have
several options other than QuickDraw GX.
For a long time there have been a couple of share/free ware utils with
names like 'DeskTop Print' that you could drop on to initiate printing, but
I can't remember their exact names.
If you have Quickeys, you can make a QK Icon for a printer Choosy shortcut
for each printer you have access to. Clicking on this icon will make that
printer the default. Dropping files on the icon will print to that
printer.
The above two methods work for all Mac printing back to at least System 7.0.
Alternatively, you can simply install the Laserwriter 8.3 or StyleWriter
1200 drivers (download from support.apple.com) which includes Drag & Drop
desktop printing.

Using HDT Hammer's software, and provided that you didn't erase Apple's

to switch back to Apple's drivers.
Start up HDT Primer, double-click on the Hard drive in question. You should

of it. Voila!
(I'd still back up the data from all the hard disk beforehand, and remember
that only the new versions of Drive Setup are capable of multiple Mac
partitions)
BTW-*all* versions of Apple's HDSC Setup work _only_ with Apple-labelled
drives. The only exception to this is if you have applied a patch to the HDSC
Setup.

Hi Everyone,
I'm looking for some expert advice. Does anyone out there use
MacAdministrator for their networks -- especially an academic network?
What are it's strong points and weak points (in your opinions). I've
been testing it on some of our machines and have been quite impressed,
but I want to make certain this is a good investment before I recommend
it to the University.
Thank you, I appreciate it.

Subject: mounting second internal HD
I bought my 7100 without internal CD-ROM and since it has the internal SCSI
connector and drive bay sitting there unused, I'd like to mount a second
internal HD in that space.
To do so, I need two brackets, apparently: the [ -shaped bracket that goes
around the bottom of hard drives beneath the circuit board; and whatever
braces and cages and whatnot would situate it snugly against the top left
hand * corner of the hole where the internal CD-ROM would have been. (*
orientation as you're facing the Mac, that is).
Any idea where I can get such hardware, and for that matter what it is
called?

I am experimenting with MacWeb on my SE before getting "connected", and
with a little extra work, you can use GIFWatcher, a nice little DA that
works fine on monochrome Macs, to view your graphics. Yes, the built-in
GIF viewer *does not work* on the SE, sad to say. With a little careful
memory management, you can also launch GIFConverter from the "retrieve and
view" popup if set up properly. This will work because you can run MacWeb
in about 1000K, despite the 2000K recommendation in the "Get Info" box.
In other words, it is not quite accurate to say the images *require* 256
grays. It's amazing how good the monochrome dithering works in these two
viewers.

There are advantages to LYNX, but it is clumsier sometimes to download and
view the graphics, especially if the page is not written with text only
browsers in mind. Sometimes a graphic just shows up as "[IMAGE]", without
an alternate link to download it. In MacWeb, any link or image has a
pop-up menu for easy downloading. In Lynx, you might have to a) view
source, b) decipher the HTML, c) go to this URL -- assuming half of it
isn't off the screen on the right side
Amazing what the little SE can do with a little ingenuity...

Subject: PPP or SLIP
Hi!
My provider offers me the option of going either PPP or MacSLIP,
which I had before. (I am now using PPP)
While I don't notice any difference in the on-line performance, I do
find the PPP software somewhat ambiguous.
Any version of PPP (free or other) I have used todate (using 2.2.0a
now) has a problem in that the configure PPP window does not always
indicate clearly, whether a connection has in fact been made, i.e.
the "open" button remains active. When I close the window and
re-open, all is fine. This ambiguity extends into disconnects.
I downloaded PPPop, which offers a more positive (red or green
arrow) indication, and that works better.
Also, at times, the reconnect doesn't work, since I get a 'waiting
for time-out ok' dialogue, which I don't quite understand.
With SLIP I never had such problems, and since I have the option, I
wonder if you people have some comments on relative benefits of
these two connect options.
Thanks,
Eckhard Behme

Subject: talking through a firewall [A]
I wish to summarize on this issue, to thank info-mac folks who helped me.
Problem: how to use various (mostly shareware) Macintosh programs when you
have a proxy-based firewall (TIS Gauntlet in my case) between you and the
Internet, knowing however that Netscape does already work (even in its
1.12N version), because it understands and supports proxy services.
Solution:
For FTP, skip Netscape and definitely forget Fetch (even in its 3.0
incarnation, which claims to support proxy, but doesn't, not in my case at
least) and use Anarchie (>= 1.60) who claims *and* correctly supports proxy
services. It is far superior to Netscape for FTP (higher sustained
throughput, no freezes and better reporting and feedback). Bookmark
management in Anarchie is unfortunately rather primitive, but no more
primitive than the one of Netscape (and notice that SIVC queries won't work
through a firewall, as the author correctly states).
For news (NewsWatcher or its variants, like eg YA NewsWatcher), you either
set up an NNTP server on the firewall or else you configure a specific NNTP
server outside the firewall in the tables used to allow *plug-gw* to let
you talk to it.
For mail (using Eudora Light), I'm still trying it out, but it appears
(untested, as yet) that besides the setting up of a POP3 server on the
firewall there should be also other alternatives.
Thanks to all netizens who emailed me with various recommendations and
especially to Jussi Torhonen.

You should be able to open the web page from your hard drive using the same
web browser you'd use to see it on the 'net. That's how I proofed my own
web pages. I created them in Word 5, saved as text only, then opened the
file in Netscape. Since I used the same folder hierarchy for image etc.
files in both places, all the internal links worked. When I'd need to make
a change, I'd go back to Word, make the change, then go back to Netscape
and choose Reload. Presto: instant update. I suppose I could use the web
browser in Word 6, but I have better ways to spend my weekends than dealing
with Word 6.

Does anyone know the EXACT steps to take to make WIndows 95 networking work
on a 6100 with Apple's 486 card? I've followed the instructions in Apple's
Tech Info Library, and they work great for Novell servers, but they don't
work at all for Win95 peer to peer.

Subject: Windows for Workgroups and PB520c
I'm sure this appears in an FAQ somewhere, but I failed to find it in the
Info-Mac archives (probably couldn't see it due to failing eyesight
someone could point my eyes in the right direction, or answer directly, I
would be greatly appreciative.
At work I deal with 3 PC's on a 10baseT network using Windows for
Workgroups for the networking software. I would like (soon--need) to plug
in and at least transfer files over the network, rather than using a
combination of sneaker-net and diskette-net.
The simplist way to do this, I have been told, is to set up using TCP, and
FTP files between machines. I have thus started to read about TCP and
addressing. My problem is that I have less reading time than I need to set
up things. We are adding a number of new applications onto the PC's, which
I will be required to monitor the files using my PB (no money for another
PC workstation!) The file transfer process is beginning to become more
urgent.
I have FTP applications for my PB. I have MacTCP. On the Windows side, I
have an FTP application from my internet provider. I have something called
TCPMan, which has a TCP setup window. What else do I need? How do I use
what I have?
I have tried setting up IP numbers on both machines, and setting MacTCP to
use the Ethernet verus PPP. This doesn't work. Perhaps I have missed
something?
Thank you for any help or suggestions. Cost is an issue, as I work for a
local YMCA, a not-for-profit organization (budgets are always tight). Email
or Digest answers--your choice as I read every night.

Try the following, singly or in combo:
Turn off background printing
Upgrade to HP's DeskWriter 6.03 drivers
Increase the memory allocation in the Finder to a fairly high ammount (more
than 1.5 meg)
Update your OpenTransport to at least 1.08
Finally:
Try drawing magic symbols on the floor and whirling around in Dervish-like
formation
