Welcome to Powderhound Software's Blackjack Attitude - where
you're placed into the thick of high energy action at one of three
unique casinos. Or slow the game down until you've perfected your
card counting skills. The game features easy control of everything
>From speed of play, sound, house rules, strategy, card count, number
of players and special effects. You can play head to head against the
Dealer or when you feel up to it let the computer simulate play for
up to three other players. This provides a more realistic scenario so
you can really sharpen your card counting skills.
With Instant-Help you're just a button press away from a preview of
the correct strategy. If you aren't sure of your next move press the
Question Mark button and the strategy table will be displayed. The
correct play is conveniently highlighted. Blackjack Attitude comes
pre-programmed with the Basic Strategy. Make a play which violates
the strategy and Blackjack Attitude let's you know. A warning screen
tells you the correct play based on the programmable strategy tables.
You can easily re-program the strategy tables with any sure-fire
strategy you choose. If you're really serious pick up a book by one of
the Blackjack gurus and enter the strategy into Blackjack Attitude.

Subject: [*] Control Strip Menu 2.3
Hello everyone,
this is version 2.3 of Control Strip Menu. Please replace all previous
versions in the archive with this version.
THE SOUND BITE:
Working with your files, folders, or applications has never been easier.
It's now just a click or drag away!
THE ELEVATOR STATEMENT:
Control Strip Menu is a control strip module that puts a hierarchical
menu of your favorite files and folders on your control strip. This lets
you access files, folders and applications with just a click or drag! You
can drag items to copy, move, or make aliases to them. Control Strip Menu
works the way you want it to because it can be customised in a multitude
of ways.
REQUIREMENTS:
This module works on desktop Macs, portable Macs, and PowerMacs. System
7.0 or later is required. Macintosh Drag and Drop (which is built into
System 7.5 or later) is highly recommended.
ABOUT THIS VERSION:
This is a minor new version. It has these improvements over the last
version, v2.2.1:
* now comes with 2 versions: 68K and PowerPC native (the PowerPC version
works with all the strip utilities).
* now respects 'diacritical marks' such as grave, umlaut, circumflex, and
acute when creating the menu listings
* displays watch cursor when scanning long folders
* now should not display menus with items just having "A" in them (or does
so much less often)
* drags into folders inside a menu will now place the icon much closer to
the other icons instead of placing them far far away in the folder
* increased the allowed scan interval to a maximum of about 8 hours
* changed the default scan interval to 10 minutes
* and most important of all: no longer scans the disk excessively. Now scans
only when it has to
Please see the included Read Me files for all the details.
Control Strip Menu is shareware.
Enjoy,
Vincent.

Subject: [*] I Ching Connexion 2.2; I Ching with a new view
The I Ching Connexion is an ever-changing but always consistently interlocking
graphic representation of the way the 64 hexagrams interrelate.
As such it is the key to widen and deepen the interpretation of the outcome of
a divination.
It features the translation James Legge made (published in 1882, England) of
the Imperial Edition of the I (published in 1715, China). This alone makes the
program useful for anyone interested in the I Ching.
Besides that it adds two radical new views to the ancient Book of Changes:
the Connexion and the Mediator.
It also features an I Ching clock, a presentation of the link between the
I Ching and astrology. And it allows you to calculate your natal hexagram.
The I Ching Connexion requires a Macintosh with System 7.0 or later,
32-bit Color Quickdraw and at least 256 colors or grays.
This software is distributed as shareware.
Please read 'I Ching Connexion Read Me' for a bit more introductory info.
There are quite a few nice changes since v2.1:
- Added a simple display of the outcome, so the program can easily be
used for traditional divinations (that is: without a Connexion).
- Made the changing lines more visible, and clickable in the 'Hexagram
Meaning' window.
- Switched to using the excellent WASTE text engine,
(c) 1993-1995 Marco Piovanelli, which brought along:
. Drag and drop
. Undo
. Embedded pictures
. Large texts (so Ta Chuan in two parts now, instead of four)
- Added Color menu.
- Added support for page navigation and text editing keys on extended
keyboard.
- Several cosmetic changes, minor text corrections and small bug fixes.
- Optimised for PowerPC and 680x0 Macs (FAT version).
- Please note Ed has a new e-mail address.
Have fun.

Subject: [Q] Can I get RAM Doubler
Back in October, 1994 I bought my PPC 7100/230 CD...etc. and a lot of
software, including Microsoft Office Standard Version 4.2 Academic.
"Connectix RAM Doubler v. 1.5" was included as noted on the "ADDENDUM TO
MICROSOFT LICENSE AGREEMENT Microsoft Office for the Macintosh with
Connectix RAM Doubler v.1.5..etc"
When I tried to install RAM Doubler from the 3.5 disk, the monitor showed
a notice explaining that the software was not loading because it was not
configured for a PPC and that a PPC version would be available soon. Having
just converted from the IBM/Intel community what this message was telling
me was that I would soon have the opportunity to acquire a replacement
program on a 3.5 disk.
So I did what any IBM/Intel person would do: I erased the disk,
stripped off the label and used the disk for other purposes. Imagine my
supprise when I tried to install the RAM Doubler Updater on a blank disk:
it told me to install the orginal RAM Doubler disk (which I no longer had).
I then called Microsoft and explained my problem. They advised me
that they no longer supplied specific individual replacement disks, but
they gladly sent me the complete set of "Office" disks. I then discovered
that "RAM Doubler" was not included with the current shipments.
Connectix was no help as the responsibility of furnishing the
program was with Microsoft.
Is anyone out there who will take my word for the fact that I have
a license and forward me a disk image of Connectix RAM Doubler? Failing
that does anyone know any other way that I can get it (besides shelling out
more money)?
Thanks,
Duane

Subject: Apple Menu Option/CD-ROM related bug.
>>>>>The Apple Menu Items folder contains aliases of folders on disks other
than the startup disk. Normally files in those folders appear as submenus on
the Apple menu, and can be launched from it. However, when the Mac is started
with an audio or data disk in the CD-ROM drive, this no longer works. When
chosen from the menu, instead of launching the files Finder opens the System
folder....
Has anybody else seen this bug? I downloaded some binary files of Mac software from my local Internet

Hmmmm...try appending ".bin", ".uue", or ".uu" to the end of the file name.
Many decoders won't take a stab at something without a clue as to its
format. Caution: keep an unmodified copy handy until you've tried the
apps.
What did you use to download and try to decode? Fetch and Anarchie should
auto-magically pass the downloaded files on to StuffIt Expander (or your
choice of other post-processors) if you tell them to in their preferences,
or by using Internet Config 1.1.
Hope this helps. Cheers,

Two possibilities:
1) Select all the documents in the Finder (this makes it necessary
that they reside all in the same folder). Then chose "Print..." in
the Finder (not "Print window..."). This starts the related appli-
cation, prints the selected number of copies and quits the application
again.
2) Install QuickDraw GX which includes Desktop printing capabilities.
Can't comment how it works, because I don't have it installed.
Best wishes, Christian.

How about the Finder?
You can either select the documents in question and choose print from the File
menu, or, if you have LaserWriter 8.3 or StyleWriter 1200 software installed,
you can use desktop printers. Just drag the files to the desktop printer icon
and it will open the printer, give you a page setup box, a print box, and fire
them off, then quit the app. Works quite well

The first line should of course be:

MacTCP is certainly not a preference file. Sorry if the missing
word confused anyone...

Hi,
I hope you folks can help me. I have aquired the Internet Starter Kit

type of session I would like before I enter my user id. I can choose a
standard UNIX(SUNS) connection or SLIP. But ofcourse Z-term is not SLIP
software. The problem is that InterSLIP only allows me to enter a user
id and password, but will not allow anymore entries. So can you help? I
hope so, thanks in advance.

This has happened on and off over the months. My modem sometimes just won't
connect to other modems. I pick up the telephone and there is a buzzing or

Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Subject: Netscape & SE (A)
Dear Digest Readers,
Some people have previously posted about Netscape & the SE.
For those who don't already know:
The 68000 processor machines - SE, Plus, Classic I, Powerbook 100, Mac
Portable are all INCAPABLE of running Netscape.
Netscape's page of Q & A specificly says 68030 processors and up. Though I
have successfully run it on an LC. At one point they actually did say
68020 processors and up.
The SE/30 when color monitor is attached, Classic II when color monitor is
attached, LC, II series, Centris, Quadra, PowerMac, Powerbook 140 and
higher, Performa 400 and higher, are all capable of running Netscape.
Remember, unless your Mac has grayscale (if black & white monitor or
Powerbook is used), you will not be able to clearly depict any of the
images stored on the Net for viewing by MacWeb or Netscape. Most of the
images require 256 grayscale.
If thinking about getting a PPP connection, and you have less grays on your
Mac, you might want to instead get just the Telnet software (NCSA-Telnet
2.5) and use LYNX on your access provider. LYNX is a much faster
non-graphical web browser (for those don't already know). It makes more
sense for those people with computers that can't handle browsing of images
on the Web. Now granted, it means learning a little UNIX or VAX/VMS to use
LYNX, but for the speed it is worth it.
Hope this helps
Sincerely,

Choose Preferences from the Edit menu, then click on the Environment button. In
the dialog box that appears, choose Num Lock from the Options menu.

The "Show Codes" command, which I find abominable, is still in WordPerfect
3.5.

Thanks very much to the gentlemen who responded to my question. I now know
that to use the numeric keypad for number entry, you must first toggle on
Num Lock by pressing shift-clear, similar to on a PC. I had never used a
(Mac) program before that used numlock in this way. This is the first one
I've seen that does not give number output by default.

Use Num Lock -- Shift+the key just above the number pad 7 (usually
labelled "num lock" on the upper half of the key). BTW, this is the way
Num Lock works in most applications, it's just that WP sets the default
to Num Lock Off and assigns functions to the keypad keys.
>BTW: I think it's a tragedy that they removed "codes" in version 3.5 .
Codes are still there, I used the Show Codes window last night to figure
out why Newton Press was doing something weird with the WP document
template. Was there some particular feature with respect to manipulating
codes directly that you can't find in the new version? I haven't had to
import a Word document with lots of styles lately (the major source of my
Codes manipulation in the past), so I can't clearly recall whether WP
took out some of the search features or just moved them to a new location.

ANNOUNCING THE ONECLICK-TALK MAILING LIST
Hello!
LakeSoft, Inc., the premier developer of OneClick extensions and add-ons,
today announced the creation of the OneClick-Talk Mailing List. We are
modeling this list on the very popular and successful Emailer-Talk
Mailing List. This list will hopefully be a convenient place where the
users, the developers from LakeSoft, and the staff of WestCode Software
can interact. We invite anyone with the slightest interest in OneClick to
participate in the list.
For a little background, here's our very own CEO, Stephen Jovanovic:
"Only once every few years does a breakthrough effort come together,
which
combines Art, Inspiration, and Love, to create the product that is
OneClick--which reminds us of what it means to be "Macintosh."
Replacing QuicKeys, PreFab Player, all of the Launch Strip utilities, and
a host of others in one fell swoop, OneClick is a sweeping super-utility
that gives
users the ability to perform any task literally with a single click, and
have fun at it! Fronting two languages (EasyScript and AppleScript),
with an elegant, customizable palette and button interface, OneClick
provides us with the unique ability to customize and automate *any*
application.
Every developer in LakeSoft gets four things when they join our company:
a lecture on breaking new ground and making a difference, a copy of Late
Night Software's "Script Debugger," Metrowerks' "CodeWarrior," and
WestCode's "OneClick." John Oberrick (WestCode's COO/CFO), Rob Renstrom
(CEO), Alan Bird (Sr. Developer), Jeff Jungblutt (Writer)--and
OneClick--have my highest recommendation!"
LakeSoft will be releasing a free suite of OneClick add-ons for the very
popular Claris Emailer during the second week of January. These will
include such things as PGP control and smart quoting. This will be a
precursor to our major Internet Suite due out around the 15th of February.
To join the list, simply send mail to [email protected]
and put "subscribe" in the body. The subject line can be left blank.

Subject: Philosophical musings...
Hello fellow info-mac'ers!
I had the most profound experience the other day, and I want to share with
the rest of the world. This night not be the ideal forum for this, so
I'll keep it relatively short.
So there I was, downloading some intensely huge file from the archives to
my duo 230, when I happenned to glance out the window and noticed the
phone wire coming in to my apartment building from the street. I stood
and walked to the window, where I could trace the wire all the way down
the block and into the distance. As I stared at that wire, I imagined all
those bits of information racing along it and pouring out into my
computer. From my 3rd floor vantage point, I can see quite a ways. I
tried to imagine what was going on at the other end of that wire...where
did it lead? Well, it turns out that I was downloading from Switzerland
at the time, and I could almost see all those bustling bits cruising
across the Atlantic. All spouting from some other computer, more or less
the same as mine. Maintained by another person, more or less the same as
me. Was that person standing at the other end of the wire, staring out
the third floor window, wondering where all his bits were rushing off to
in such a hurry?
My point is that up 'til that moment, I took all this Internet stuff for
granted. Connect up to some machine, grab whatever looks interesting like
a pirate plundering a village, and move on to the next promising site.
But you know what? There are physical things and *people* out there
folks--none of this great stuff would be possible without the people.
This Internet doesn't exist for anyone's personal advantage--it's just a
way for all of us to connect in a way we couldn't before.
Well, that's about all I had to share. Take from my ramblings what you
will. If nothing else, try sitting still for a moment, closing your
eyes, and just try to imagine where all those bits, like so many notes
stuffed in bottles, are going...
Philosophically yours,
Scott (who is wonders if he unplugged the ethernet from his workstation
if he would be resposible for cleaning up the bits that spill out when he

Simple: In most browswers, he uses open from the File menu and opens
his page. In others, he types the path of the file for the URL.

In Netscape and MacWeb there is a command under the File menu to Open
*File*. This will preview a file on your own machine. Note that if there
are lnks on the page to other locations, for graphics or counters or
whatever, the browser will probably try to open the TCP. If not connected
this sometimes freezes the machine.

Certainly. Just open the top-level HTML file in a WWW browser. In
Netscape, this is most easily done by dragging the file's icon onto the
Netscape window. Note that if all of the HTML and image files are not in
the same directory, the relevant parts of the server's directory
structure will need to be replicated on the Mac.

The Antagonist: A PowerMac 7100 with 16 megs of ram that after months of
faithful service now does not like the idea of printing
color documents, and hangs at the "Scrolling to Disk" prompt.
Possiblilities to consider:
1) Ensure that you have sufficient disk space on the disk/partition
that the System Folder resides on. I had a similar problem recently with my
IIsi when the System Disk got pretty full. If you are very full with no
good options, try TechTool to rebuild the desktop - desktop files can
become huge (couple of Megs).
2) check and increase the applications memory sizes on HP Print
Monitor - you might try printing with Background Printing off.
3) A conflict with Control Panels and Inits
Given the fact that it prints B&W Text fine, I would really suspect 1 or 2,
color and graphics files are much bigger in size.
