Subject: [*] 3D Buttons v1.3
This is the COOLEST 3D Button around!! (but then I'm biased...)
Version 1.3 fixes a nasty bug that crashed & corrupted the Chooser on
PowerMacs and adds an option to control the appearance of CheckBoxes.
It is FREE, Accelerated for Power Macintosh, looks great even on white
backgrounds, has balloon help and works correctly with localized versions
of the MacOS.
After using it for a while, you'll be amazed at how "flat" the normal
Macintosh buttons appear.
It actually works side-by-side with other utilities, substituting it's
button for those in other utilities. If you like this button, it will
replace the buttons used in NewLook, Aaron or Greg's Buttons while allowing
all the other features of those utilities to work. It also works just fine
with color changing utilities like Aurora, Mac MakeOver and even Kolor for
those System 6 users out there.
The button design was inspired by the develop 15 article by Jamie Osborne &
Deanna Thomas and follows their recommendations for 3D shading and colors.
Hopefully, they will approve.
Other features are:
- 3D buttons appear in alerts & dialogs without color tables (and without
adding them).
- a 3D version of the "New folder" button in save dialogs - this works in
localized versions of the MacOS.
- buttons display correctly on PICT or pattern backgrounds
- on black&white displays the buttons are identical to the standard control
A color Macintosh and System 6.0.7 or better are required.

Subject: [*] IQ Booster
The IQ Booster is one of the most comprehensive, most accurate
self-administered IQ Test ever created for the general public! At your
convenience and in the privacy of your own home, you will discover what
you've always wondered about - your IQ score! By using the IQ Booster, you
can increase your IQ score on other IQ tests. Most IQ tests consist of the
same kinds of questions, and this program covers the spectrum, so you can be
prepared for other IQ tests. This program will give you an edge over people
who have not had experience with IQ tests.
The human brain, which research has found is divided into two hemispheres,
has naturally assigned certain specific mental skills to either side. Since
most people are either left- or right-brain dominant, it explains why we do
well on certain mental tasks and poorly on others. This elaborate 10-part
test (with the first four parts being completely free) will measure the
multiple skill functions of both sides of your brain, and will not only show
you your total IQ score, but it will additionally give a determination of
which side of your brain is dominant, and by how much. You may just be one of
those few "equal" brain thinkers - where both side are working in harmony!
Take an amazing journey into your thought control center and discover how
intelligent you really are! It's a fun and easy test to take, and comes with
all instructions that you need to get your best score.
If you like the first part of the test, you will want to order the next 6
parts, which are password protected and contained within the program that
came with this read-me. The shareware payment for this test is only $10. With
that payment you will receive a password that will allow you to have access
to the additional tests and access to the encrypted answers and the
explanations about why the answers are correct! If you include your e-mail
address with your shareware payment, we will send the password via e-mail, so
you can have access to the other tests within a matter of a few days!

Subject: [*] Jade 1.01; a multithreaded JPEG viewer
Jade 1.01 is a multithreaded JPEG viewer for the Mac which is
relatively lean (370K as a fat binary, and a minimum memory
partition size of 600K) but is extremely fast and sports some
unique features:
Multithreading gives you constant access to all of Jade's features:
especially useful when used as a helper for a web browser or when
you just want to decompress two images at once.
Through the use of it's own virtual memory scheme, Jade can have
many (around 30+ files at the minimum parition setting) files
simultaneously _regardless of their size_ This is because decompressed
images only occupy a little RAM and the actual image is stored on
disk. This feature allows you to do batch viewing jobs which
is especially useful on slower machines: drop a ton of JPEGs on it
and get a cup of coffee. When you return, voila!
Jade can also display JPEG's at their full size or in a small (but
quick!) preview size in addition to the standard screen size. This
coupled with a delete file hot key allows users to sift and filter
through many images with ease.
Jade is also one of the first JPEG viewers to support Progressive
JPEGs which are becoming prominent in web sites.
new in 1.01:
--fixes a tiny bug which caused a freeze up at startup on some systems
--adds ability to view images in full screen window
--Adds ability to view quicktime previews (QT not necessary) in the
open file dialog (can't create previews yet, however)
--Adds Abort All command to kill all threads.
new in 1.0:
-- Full Screen, full featured Slide Show
-- GIF bugs fixed
-- PICT file saving is no longer limited by memory
-- New window arrangement options
-- many other minor bug fixes and minor features
Jade is FAT. Requires 68020 (or higher) or PowerPC, Thread Manager or
system 7.5 (or later).
It's also FREE.

Subject: [*] Matrix maker 2.0
This binhexed self-extracting archive contains the latest update to "Matrix
maker ", a "fat" binary application, containing both 68K and PowerPC native
Macintosh code, designed to facilitate the necessary but often somewhat
laborious "busy-work" of constructing 12 by 12 matrices used in the
composition and/or analysis of twelve-tone musical compositions. The
application also allows the creation of matrices of other dimensions than
twelve, particularly those involving five, six, and seven elements. From
its inception, the software package has also allowed the use of the M5 and
M7 transforms and rotation as optional operations.
The application is designed for use with Microsoft Word 6.x (preferably) or
Microsoft Word 5.1, though with some additional manual formatting it can be
used with other word-processors as well. MSW 5.1 stationery files included
for matrices of five, six, seven, and twelve elements allow the easy
creation of matrices, either with or without pitch-class names, within the
standard grid format. An additional option allows the selection of any
pitch-class name as "0" (zero). MSW 6.x allows the user to take advantage
of automated formatting of matrices, as described below.
Matrix maker 2.0 (fat) has eliminated some error-detection bugs that
remained in earlier versions, and has provided a more user-friendly
interface. Its major innovation, however, is the addition of the option
(for MSW 6.x users) of automating the formatting process by using an
AppleScript application, while still allowing the formatting to be
accomplished manually, as before, for those who either do not have MSW 6.x
or whose MSW 6.x applications may for some reason stubbornly refuse to work
with the script provided. Two separate folders (one for MSW 5.1 users and
one for users of MSW 6.x, each of which contains the stationery or template
files appropriate to the word-processor as well as complete documentation
on the use of the package) are provided. The package has been tested on
both 68K and Power Macintosh systems. In order to use the Applescript
matrix formatter, the computer MUST have System 7.5 or 7.5.1 installed and
the "Finder scripting extension" in the active "Extensions" folder. The
"Matrix maker 2.0 (fat)" application itself, however, does not require
System 7.5.

Subject: [*] Music Collection Deluxe 1.0 (FileMaker Pro 2.x)
Music Collection Deluxe 1.0 is an intuitive, robust database designed to
help you track your growing music collection.
Similar databases overlook your cassette tape collection and the fact that
some titles include more than one compact disc -- these are some of the
unique features of Music Collection Deluxe 1.0.
Version 1.0 includes:
12 (count 'em, 12) new layouts
12 (favorite number?) new fields: record label, catalog number, genre,
rating, purchase price, serial number, location and more.
Sort by newly added fields with a mouse click.
Other polishes and bug fixes.
Here are some comments from users of the previous version:
"Your program is the very best I've seen thus far. I really am going to
enjoy being able to include both LPs and Tapes in addition to CDs."
"I have previously downloaded at least two dozen other music databases, but
their layouts were either too cluttered or way too simplistic. I think you
have come the closest to what I envision as the perfect blend between form
and function in your layout."
"Just started exploring the [previous version] and love it. The elegance is
truly a work of art, and a quantum leap above similar files."
Features include:
A polished interface. A consistent, intuitive navigation toolbar is always
available, allowing you to quickly switch layouts. (Designed for 14" --
640 by 480 -- color monitors.)
A dynamic detail layout allowing you to see all pertinent information in
one screen. The layout adjusts on a record-by-record basis.
Detailed reports to create a hard copy of your collection. Even a "wish
list" report to provide friends or relatives gift-giving ideas.
On-line help (unchanged from previous version) revealing secrets of the
interface.

NewtATut 1.3 (Newt Application Tutorial) is a Newton book version based on an
article "Building Native Newton Applications with Newt" that appeared in PDA
(formerly PIE) Developers, Vol. 2.4, July 1994; pp.14-18. This interactive
tutorial will show how you can develop a simple application in NewtonScript
and save a package directly on your Newton using Newt.
Keywords: tutorial, Newt, object-oriented programming, application development
environment, NewtonScript, NTK.
Changes in 1.3 (1/1/96)
- updated to be compatible with Newt 3.2
- created with Newt's Cape from HTML
NewtATut -- the book -- is freeware. "Newt" -- the native programming
environment for developing applications using NewtonScript -- is shareware.
Newt is not required to use this book, nor must it be registered to try
NewtATut. If you have Newt installed on your Newton, you can build and test
the application incrementally as you read. (You should be able to find Newt
on the same server/service where you found this book, under a Newton

You need a 68030 processor or better to run Virtual Memory. An LC has
only a 68020 (won't work) while an LC II has a 68030 chip (will work).
You can verify which chip your Mac truly has with the freeware utilities
MacEnvy or TechTool, but it sounds like yours is not really an LCII. An
accellerator card like Extreme Systems Impact 030 ($200??? from
MacMall), would enable your LC to use Virtual Memory, Ram Doubler, etc.
Good luck.

Jeff, yes, I think I've had this (I think I've had _everything_
In my own case, with Syquest cartridges, I could narrow the problem down to
the General Controls CP, and the only remedy was trashing the CP and
running on defaults. I went to this extreme after the system asked for a
disk which I couldn't supply and the Mac went down into MacsBug (the Apple
debugger) very nastily.
But Fergus Lalor here has had some experiences with Color Picker, of just
this sort; and has had an interesting mail with a quote from Apple's
Infomation Alley nailing down a very complext bug involving some 3rd party
HD drivers... but with fixed media...
Where my own Macs were concerned, I suspect General Controls may have been
reacting to a blown system resource of some kind; as recently I did a
completely clean restore of _everything_ on my System partitions; and the
problem went away.
So my advice would be: make sure via Iomega's web site that you're using
the latest version of the Mac Zip driver. Or better, use Silverlining from
Le Cie, or Hard Disk Toolkit from FWB. (One can't stress too often that
formatting/driver software is the _most_ important software in the whole
picture...)
And since the problem developed after numerous crashes, it's most likely
you have a corrupted drive, or corrupted system, or both
isn't pleasant; but the best advice, since you do have a Zip, is: back up
your apps and data and then format your HD and do clean installs. Start by
installing the System, then add all 3rd party CP's/extensions/utilities
from the original disks. Then restore your apps & data. It's 6 to 7 hours
work, but it's worth it!

I'm inclined to be very suspicious of SpaceSaver, especially in conjunction
with any crash.
I recommend you try restarting with extensions off (shift key at restart),
then reset PRAM (TechTool 1.0.9, available on Info-Mac, is great for this
and for the next step also), and rebuild the Zip's desktop *from scratch*.
To rebuild *from scratch* if not using TechTool, use ResEdit to make the
old Desktop DB and Desktop DF files [and "Desktop", if it's there] visible,
move 'em to the trash [you can't empty the trash though because these files
are still in use], eject the disk, reinsert, and allow to rebuild.
Then immediately empty the trash and run MacTools and Disk First Aid until
they report no errors twice each.
These procedures wok for me with my MO disks; the same procedures should
work for your Zips. Rebuilding the desktop the usual way sometimes
propagates corruption; deleting them causes Finder to rebuild from scratch,
which eliminates any existing corruption.
Let me know if this helps. Cheers,

It didn't work, though. This is pretty common, because the normal
procedure tries to rebuild the existing files rather than starting from
scratch. You could try rebuilding it again, but even better, install
Desktop Reset , which deletes the files
and forces a "clean" rebuild.

Subject: New PowerPC user looking for pointers
I have not been paying close attention to PPC related news in digests, mags,
etc... because I never really expected to own one anytime soon. Much to my
surprise, however, my wife has ordered the PPC upgrade for my Performa 630CD
and it should be installed within days. (Merry Christmas!)
Now, of course, I'm tearing my hair out trying to remember significant PPC
related sites, utilities, warnings, performance tips, ....
If you're a PPC owner, and can send me helpful URL's to get me going on
this subject, I would deeply appreciate the jump-start.

Quickmail list? 10:00 AM 12/31/95
I've heard that there's a Quickmail listserv somewhere. Does anyone have a
pointer to it?
Thanks,

Subject: Ram-Doubler and Ethernet
On my LC 475 (System 7.5) for the entire autumn I ran Ram Doubler 1.5.2
with my ethernet card with no problem (Ethertalk Phase 2 ver. 2.5.6). Then
for unrelated reasons I moved my computer and suddenly it would not
recognize the ethernet card. Running lots of Conflict Catcher tests I have
narrowed the problem down to RD _only_ (and RD loader of course). The
puzzle is that the identical system worked fine for several months. The
only change was that I hooked up a Zip Drive temporarily. I have removed
all the Iomega software I could find including Personal Backup and Virtual
Disk. Are there some hidden files involved here?
Sorry if this is a FAQ; reply to me by email and if enough of interest I'll
summarize for the digest--meanwhile I'll also communicate with Connectix.
TIA for help.

Subject: Repost: Speed Doubler 1.1 updater problems
The Speed Doubler 1.1 updater posted here refuses to update my master disk.
Yes, the disk is unlocked. I had previously updated the disk from 1.01 to
1.02 without a problem. The new updater refuses to recognize the master
disk and keeps asking me to insert it. Anyone else with a similar problem
and/or solution? TIA!

As did TENEX, which was a precursor to TOPS-20 (and which was written at
BBN
already old hat when I started using it in the late 70s. Hierarchical
file systems have been around a long time...

Subject: Two CD-ROMS
I have a PowerMac 8500 with an internal 4x CD-ROM and an external
2x CD-ROM. For some reason, I cannot play music CD's from the
external drive...the AppleCD Audio Player tells me that the tracks
cannot be found even though they show up in the Finder.
Does anybody have any clue what is going on and how to get audio
CD's to play from the external drive?
Thanks,
Jason
