Subject: [*] 3D Gravity Thing v.1

For those who haven't guessed yet, this is an experimental 3d
gravity simulating thing. I got bored with conventional 2d gravity
simulators and made the small, but interesting leap to 3 exciting,
color-filled dimensions!!

Features include:
-Up to 30 separate "objects"
-Differently colored objects, with an optional matching trail
-2 views, the X-Y and X-Z planes, independently or simultaneously
viewable
-Perspective
-A built-in editor
-"Infinetly" adjustable speed, on even the slowest computers
-Ability to save&load objects, and quickly revert to the initial state
-Very low program size and memory requirement! (24K program, 384K min
mem.)
-Efficient, stripped-down gravitation algorithm... oooh!!
Requirements:
-FPU and a 68020 or better
IMPORTANT Note!! The requirements are only for the version I decided to
compile!
E-mail me for a non-FPU or 68000 version!

Subject: [*] CaRMSAPA: Change and Restore Monitor Settings

The Problem:
In an elementary school computer lab, the children were setting
the monitors to 16 colors to play their favorite game, and then
forgetting to set it back, adding to the aggrivation level of
the lab administrator.

Setting it up:
Set the main monitor to the settings the game (or whatever)
needs. Then drag-and-drop the game onto CaRMSAPA. CaRMSAPA
will remember the monitor settings and the game you dropped
on it. You might want to rename CaRMSAPA to reflect the game
it's set to.

Using it:
Double-click on CaRMSAPA in the Finder. It will change the
settings of the main monitor, and then launch the game. It
then hangs around in the background until the game quits,
when it restores the monitor to it's original settings.

Requirements:
Apple events. I believe that any kind of System 7 will do.
Will not work off of a locked or read-only disk.

Source code for CodeWarrior included.

Free.

Subject: [*] Car Repair Catalogue

The Car Repair Catalogue is a FileMaker Pro database which has been
designed to keep a record of your car repairs. This template includes a
page to enter the specs of your car, as well as information pertaining to
your service station(s), the type of repairs or maintenance done on the
car, parts used, general notes, the cost and hours spent. A summary can
then be drawn up detailing the date, repairs done, the cost for that
repair, and a running total.
The database also includes some nice pictures taken from the net, and an
easy to use and intuitive interface.
Feel free to redistribute this on CD but please let me know in
advance.

Subject: [*] ChunkJoiner 2.1.1; concatenates files and more

ChunkJoiner lets you join (concatenate)
any group of files in a single piece.
Select the files you want to join, and drag&drop them onto ChunkJoiner.

You can skip the data up to and including/excluding a configurable text string,
and/or skip the data beyond and including/excluding another configurable
text string,
within each chunk going to be joined.
This is useful whenever you receive long enclosures and your e-mail gateway
splits the messages in several chunks.

You can build digests by adding header, separators, and footer.
You can build setext formatted files.

ChunkJoiner works on any Macintosh, but it
**requires** System 7 or later.

New since version 2.1:
Creates the destination document in the Temporary Items folder, and moves
it into place when done; this way you cannot fiddle with the document
whilst in the middle of the operation.
Linked with the InternetConfig 1.2 glue, and my latest libraries.
Compiled with CW 7.
Other minor fixes and tweaks.

Subject: [*] CU-SeeMe-083b3

CU-SeeMe is a videoconferencing program. You use it with MacTCP (i.e. over the
Net).

1) New version number handling has been implemented, that separates
protocol version from application version, and allows more flexibility
in the application version display. On the info panel under a remote
window, you will see information on the source and date as well as
version number.

2) A bug was fixed with outgoing audio bandwidth not being counted
against the rate cap, which meant that video and other outgoing data
would not slow down to make room for audio. It should now be
automatic for senders to reduce video (if needed to stay under the
cap) whenever sound starts being sent.

3) A bug was fixed with audio slider controls getting stuck whenever
moved outside the valid range.

4) A bug causing crashes on abnormal exits was fixed.

5) Audio being sent with 7500/8500 models should now be handled
properly.

CAVEATS

*** Remember, with the 7500/8500,the video digitizer doesn't work (to
capture to an offscreen buffer as CU-SeeMe needs) if virtual memory is
on. We havn't figured out what we're going to be able to do about it,
beyond buying more memory. If you turn VM off, 83b3 (and 83b2) works.
RamDoubler also prevents digitizing.

*** Also, with the 7500/8500 CU-SeeMe and OpenTransport aren't
compatible with each other. We are working on making CU-SeeMe
compatible with Open Transport (and hope that Apple is also working on
make Open Transport compatible with existing MacTCP-based
applications). Meanwhile, do the following: (1) Install OpenTransport
COMPLETELY, (2) Remove from the Extensions folder the libraries named
"Open Tpt Internet Library" and "OpenTptInternetLib" and remove the
TCP/IP control panel, (3) Make sure that you have MacTCP 2.0.6 or
later (and for dialup, MacPPP 2.1.1SD or later).

*** There is a bug that can cause a crash if you attempt to set a
nickname to a domain-name rather than a dot-notation IP address.
(Domain-names are OK to type in to the Connect dialog.)

Subject: [*] Dr. Strangelove beeps

Because hardly anyone uploads beeps and other sounds anymore, I
thought my collection of samples from the famous Kubrick movie
"Dr. Strangelove, or how I learned to love the bomb" might give a nice
change for some.

I have upload three archives of approximately 240k with seven short
samples each, and one larger archive (793k) with seven longer
samples. The shorter ones make excellent beeps, and the longer ones,
..., well, listen for yourself. The beeps are of a rather good
quality, and sampled at only 11kHz.

Although the sounds do no longer have the meaning they originally had
in our post-cold war age, I hope they're still enjoyable,

Between 1976 and 1984 I was possessed with a spirit that cared
a great deal about abstract games of pure strategy. It died
eventually, of lack of ambition, and left me with a legacy of
some forty games.
Many of them were played extensively at the games club 'Fanatic'
at the University of Twente in the Netherlands.
Many of them, too, appear in David Pritchard's 'The Encyclopedia of
Chess Variants' (G&P Publications, P.O. Box 20, Godalming,
Surrey GU8 4YP, U.K. ; ISBN 0-9524142-0-1) and in R. Wayne Schmittberger's
'New Rules for Classic Games' (John Wiley & Sons, Inc. New York; ISBN
0-471-53621-0).

Seven self reading documents featuring print options and page navigation,
containing descriptions of some thirty of my best games (with many full
colour diagrams) can be found in the info-mac archives under
games/board/freeling-.hqx. The books are:

Grand Chess & company
Bushka
HexDame
Emergo
Medusa & company
Havannah & company

published by QuickMedia. Living Album allows any color Macintosh users to
quickly assemble multimedia albums with each entry linked with photo,
audio, video, text, and text-to-speech. It is the best and easiest tool to
use to present and publish multimedia data. Now with Living Album/Web you
can easily turn your Living Album pages into web pages with just a few
mouse clicks ! Come visit our home page at "http://www.quickmedia.com/" and
see the sample albums published on the net!

The freeware (Lite) version of Living Album/Web is identical to the full
program except that instead of importing up to 36 photos per page it
imports up to 6 photos per page. It also exports up to 6 photos to a web
page. Living Album/Web Lite users can still add up to 1,000 pages per

New to this issue are hot links via NetScape to some critical Macintsoh

mainly intended for those people that have full internet accounts.
However, there are some very useful URL's for those that do not have
separate internet accounts. You can manually type these into your browser.

The MacAssistant Tips and Tutorial Newsletter only has tips and tutorials
plus an occasional puzzle. I do not do reviews in this newsletter. While
reviews are useful, I feel that a newsletter that actually tells you how
to use your your Mac more effectively is much more useful to the novice
and intermediate users. It includes many tips about using your Mac and
even a puzzle when you need to take a break. The tutorials are
accompanied by graphics that help to understand the article. This is a
shareware product that has even more information and tips for those that

article will explain to you the differences in the various types of Fonts
currently available . This is a short, fascinating download well worth

Subject: [*] Megalomania1.2.3

Megalomania is not a MIDI sequencer, patch editor, or patch librarian. It
is not like any other Macintosh application. It's
closest relative is MAX. Where MAX is a programming tool, Megalomania is a
cuisinart for MIDI data.

Megalomania is like an effects processor for MIDI data. As MIDI data enters
your Macintosh it is processed by
Megalomania and then sent back out. The processing that takes place is
designed by you.

You design the processing by connecting together icons that represent
simple, as well as, not so simple real-time MIDI
effects.

These include complex, multitapped delays with non-linear periods,
controller-generating envelopes, and channel
hocketing (sending each note of the MIDI input to a different channel), and
much more.

Since Megalomania runs in real-time you can perform with the effect while
you are designing it!

Subject: [*] NLFE v1.3.3 Non-Linear Finite Element solver

NLFE v1.3.3 Non-Linear Finite Element solver for displacements based
on the boundary conditions specified.

Linear problems can also be solved more easily since the solution
converges after only 2 or 3 iterations, but it is not useful since
the usage of this application concentrates on deflections of soft
material (large deflection problems).

The subject material is at a Ph.D. level where the idea was used in
a thesis by a friend of mine and I took it a step further to add
visualization to the solution, and the flexibility of building a
random problem easily. You can also save your design to an input
file.

The only system requirements is to have a mac running system 7. The
non-FPU demo is slow due to the math intensive operations (matrix
solution of a system of equations by iterations).

*Version 1.3.2 corrects a bug that caused the 1.3.1 demo to crash on
non-FPU machines.
*Version 1.3.3 adds a copy from window to the clipboard option, and
keeps the animation on the screen until manually reset (long enough
to copy).

This is a demo version limited to 4 nodes only. The original
version is limited by memory since more nodes increase the memory
requirements substantially. The shareware fee is $15 for the
application and the user manual. Please include your e-mail when
ordering. Previous users of the program can have the update free by
sending me their e-mail address or a floppy and a self-stamped
envelop.

FilemakerPro tool for Dutch phone numbers

Most phonenumbers (both area codes and subscriber numbers) in the
Netherlands have been changed in a complicated way.
Dialing your friends in NL with their old number still functions with an
extra delay, to be replaced sometime next year by a computerized female
saying "Sorry, number changed..." in six languages or something equally
annoying.

NLphoneCheck.fmpr1.0 is a FilemakerPro productivity tool. It is suitable

It can check NL phone numbers for errors, format them, and will convert

Subject: [*] Planet Macintosh StartUp Movie

Introducing the most spectacular 3-D digitally animated StartUp Movies
ever! The "Planet Macintosh" StartUp Movie is set in outer space, with
the famous image of the U.S. Astronaut standing next to the American Flag
on the moon...only this isn't the moon. It begins with dark space in the
distance, and a deep bass rumble, as a small planet flies by in orbit
around the moon with a very cool stereo sound that follows the planet, as
the word "WELCOME" fades in in 3-D chrome, then hovers and flies off into
the distance. Next, the word "TO" appears and a very futuristic-style
writing of the word "Planet" revolves to the top of the picture in 3-D,
and the word "Macintosh" flies to the bottom of the screen, while a
mystical blue planet flies into frame with a very cool stereo-effect
follows the planet in your speakers. Meanwhile, you hear the faint beeps
of communications to earth as a muffled, staticy voice says "We have
arrived on Planet Macintosh." It is a very impressive clip and a great
way to make an otherwise boring startup process a great way to show off
your Mac!

The animation is a 4-second, 324 x 230 pixel, thousands of colors,
8-bit/22kHz Stereo StartUp Movie that plays automatically when your
extensions load! It is for your use, free of charge. You only need to
have Quicktime installed. This installer will automatically configure it
to play when you restart, so you don't have to do a thing to make it
work. You can download it here, or at the CLIXSOUNDS WWW site at
http://www.edmondsun.com/clix/ , along with other great audio files and
startup animations. Enjoy your stay on Planet Macintosh.

Subject: [*] Snavely 1.0.2; a game

Snavely is a completely original arcade game for the Mac. In Snavely it is
your job to control two big-nosed, wriggly snakes. You have to keep them from
wandering off the edge of the playing board, and maneuver them so they cross
paths, creating an "egg" and scoring points. As you progress through the
levels of Snavely, your snakes encounter a variety of objects -- some that are
useful, and some that make trouble for you and your snakes. Snavely takes only
about one minute to learn, but the complexity, difficulty and strategic
possibilities increase with each successive level, so it should take you a
long, long time to get bored with the game. Complete instructions to Snavely
are within the game, under the Apple menu.

Snavely is completely non-violent, making it suitable for all ages and all
sensibilities, while the higher levels of the game present a hefty challenge
even for experienced arcade-game-fiends.

Snavely can be played by one person, or by two people playing cooperatively
(one person controlling each snake). The latter option has been applauded by
parents for the unique opportunities it provides for cooperative play for two
children or for a parent and child.

Snavely is simple to learn, but not simple-minded. For example, the "reward"
objects you encounter are not just arbitrary "power-ups". They are meaningful
tools that you can make use of to your advantage, or misuse to your peril.

Snavely is a professional quality game with smooth, fast animation,
multi-channel sound, background music, and all that cool stuff.

This is version 1.0.2 of Snavely. A bug that would cause a variety of problems
on PowerPC Macs and other Macs with virtual memory turned on has been fixed.

Critical Acclaim:
Paul Taylor of Mac Media E-Zine says: "Ladies and gentlemen, this is how
shareware should be done. Snavely is one of the first games in a long while
that I have had the occasion to review that is based on a completely new
concept and is of phenomenal quality... An awesome creation!"

Requires: System 7.0 or later, 256 colors, any size monitor, LC or better Mac,
2000K free RAM.

tn3270 is a terminal emulation program. You use it with MacTCP (i.e. over the

Version 2.5b2, 10/95

1. Tn3270 now runs in native mode on PowerMacs. The tn3270 installer allows
installation of the 68K version, native version, or a combined universal
version. Tn3270's "About" dialog includes the current mode (68K or Native
PPC).

2. Tn3270 includes full support for the Drag Manager. If the Drag Manager is
installed on your Macintosh, you can drag text directly between tn3270 and the
Finder, SimpleText, or any other programs that support dragging. Dragging may
also be done between tn3270 sessions. New settings for controlling dragging
are found under "Text Copying..." in the "Session" menu.

3. The "Text Copying..." settings also allow specifying that "Copy" preserves
all blanks in the selected text.

4. Command-left-arrow and command-right-arrow may be used to switch to the
previous and next sessions.

5. Tn3270 no longer uses the file "config.tel". The FTP server settings which
it contained are now available under the "Network" menu. To save the
settings, use "Save Defaults..." under the "File" menu. They will be saved in
the file "tn3270 Preferences" in the Preferences folder. A warning alert will
be displayed if the saved defaults will include enabling the FTP server.

6. The "Network" menu includes new commands for "Send FTP Command" and "Send
IP Address".

7. A new display option allows using the 12-point font with less spacing
between the lines. Using this option, the 12-point font may be used in some
situation where only 9-point could previously be used, such as on many
PowerBooks. To select the new option, use the "Screen Format..." settings in
the "Open Connection" dialog. It is also available using "Screen Format..."
under the "Session" menu.

8. Tn3270 now supports authenticated and encrypted sessions when compatible
support is available in the host server. The new support uses the same method
as NCSA Telnet, including the same plugin files. Authentication and
encryption are selected using new options in the "Special" settings of the
"Open Connection" dialog.

to install onto your newton. It runs on all versions of NOS, but I do not have
2.0, to check it out.

We're straying, but this needs correction. TOPS-20 not only
had hierarchical directories, it also had OS support for
file version numbers, and many other very cool features.
Good old days, indeed.

[Did it really? I don't remember version numbers until VMS came along... no,
wait, I was using a PDP-10, which wasn't running TOPS-20. I skipped over
TOPS-20 straight to VMS. Ahhh, DEC in the good old days -Gordon]
