Can an LCD "flicker" or give the illusion of doing so?

I'm not sure if my eyes deceive me but I swear my 23" ACD was just flickering for a few moments. I noticed it when my furnace switched on for a couple of seconds. I always thought LCDs couldn't flicker - what might cause this illusion? A poorly wired household power grid?
I am now telling the computer exactly what it can do.
