Hello,

Would it be possible to convert a PowerMac 9600 MP into
a G3 or G4 MP with the help of a few Zif carriers or
some other alternative like that?

Thanks, John

Can you boot from the start up CD and then "Update Driver"?

Off the record, I agree...

I appreciate the response to my post. You were kind enough not to bash me -too hard-.
I realize this is personal opinion, and that's what I expressed.
For what it's worth, I've been on the hunt for the Penultimate email client (oxymoron, I know).
I've used MailSmith/PowerMail/OE/Netscape/IM&N/Eudora and now SweetMail.
None of the clients crashed my Mac, save Eudora. I can't therefore, believe it's my machine.
I've started using SweetMail. This little program is very powerful, customizable, exceedingly
fast and easy to use. It DOESN'T crash my Mac. It is in beta and has a few things I'd like to
see included in the final version. The author is busy working on it and is open to ideas.
It costs $18. Take a look at this one. I have no interest in this other than I truly believe
I've found the Holy Grail!

I'm pretty sure the PowerCenters are SCSI only machines and as such will
not work with ATA drives without additional hardware.

Folks,

Does anyone have URL pointers or programs to recommend that describe the
differences or advancements in processors? I'm hard-pressed to describe the
difference between PPC, G3 and G4.

Thank you,

Not long after the iMac first came out there was a guy in British
Columbia (western Canada) who set up a regular website from an iMac
with PWS. He solicited people to go to the site as he wanted to see
what kind of load it would handle. Not too long after he relayed that
he had a large number of hits and the system never went down. I think
everybody was surprised. Unfortunately I don't remember anything
other than this apocryphal story. However, I did look at the site
myself and checked it with and it looked
fine, and was in fact running from PWS. It wasn't just a simple text
site either - he had assorted jpegs and several QTVR panos of the
tourist sites in the area.

Setting up as a domain shouldn't be too hard.

Of course with OS/X things should become both easier and harder as
it's BSD unix and thus should have everything you need built in.

A friend sent me email attachments with a .pps extension. I know he uses
Windows but is there a way for me to view these files on my Mac G3
powerbook? Do I need a certain translator and where can I get it? Thanks.

Is there a general purpose Print Preview utility out there someplace?
I have in mind a utility that would allow me to see a reduce image of
each page, to check margins and page breaks.

Some printer drivers include that; my Stylescript, unfortunately, does not.

I also used Print Shop Deluxe for years but, a year ago, found another
program that is even better. It does everything that Print Shop did and
more! It is called Print Explosion by Nova Development Corp
(www.novadevelopment.com). I'm confident your friend will be more than
happy with it.

Broderbund has sold the program to Mattel, which no longer provides a
Mac
version. They did very nicely send my friend the Windows version, but .
. .
Are there other sites that deal in surplus, discontinued, etc. software?

My friend is sufficiently distressed that she is thinking of getting a
Windows machine, just to run that program. A far better solution than
coping with the eccentricities of Windowns, it seems to me, would be to
learn another program that has the same functions.
So, as an alternative, can anyone suggest a program that has card-making
functions similar to those of Print Shop?

Hello Ezra,
Yes and no, I do this all the time since I have never been able to buy a
Mac formatted Zip disk here yet. Formatted capacity is about 94 Mbytes.

Yes, it is. And it works very well, and takes only about 10 seconds.
I frequently move graphic files between the two platforms. I usually
take my MAC Zips and format them to PC format, copy my files to the
ZIP, and load them onto the PC. I must do this because the PC is not
bright enough to recognize a MAC Zip, although a MAC has no problem
reading a PC ZIP. I am not aware of any drawbacks to this.

To take this a step further, can anyone give me a good reason why we
even have ZIP's in Macintosh format? Why not just have them in PC
format, and be able to use them on either platform? Kinda like
CD-Roms.

Regards,

Dave

I've done it and the only consequence is that the label says its WinDos
formatted. This may confuse the Wintel users if they try to view it.
