Subject: [Q] FireWire capabilities
Not yet having a FireWire capable Mac, I am lacking in knowledge of the
FireWire bus.
I understand that FireWire drives are not bootable. Is this a function
of the Apple FireWire driver? Is new hardware required (see Apple's new
USB on the G4, now bootable over USB). Will boot capability be added in
the future?
Also, is there a external device that will convert analog video to
FireWire data? (I have heard rumors that the new iMac will feature a
FireWire port, but not analog video capture)
What other devices currently support FireWire? I have seen the G3/G4,
some Sony video cameras and VST's FireWire harddrive. Is that it?
Are Sony's iLink and Apple's FireWire interchangable? What about other
(knock-off) IEEE9337 (or whatever it is ?!) standard devices?

I am having problems with the red color in my Apple 15 Multiscan AV monitor.
I understand that this is a known problem, but Apple's response to the
problem ($200 for repair) does not meet my needs. According to some
discussion on the Apple Tech Exchange, the problem is due to a bad solder
joint.
Could someone please identify the joint to be repaired?

Subject: Apple Service manuals? Laserwriter Pro 630
I have an Apple Laserwriter 630 that got jammed by a partial sheet of address
labels (a serious printer no-no; I didn't do it). I took apart the "finish
rollers" area where the jam was, got the label bits out, and put it back
together. Everything looks fine, the rollers turn, etc. The only problem is,
the printer still continually jams there. This is at the very last roll-out
rollers, where you can actually see the edge of the paper about to come out,
but it never does.
I could ask for advice, but it's probably a very visual thing. What I'm really
wondering is, are there any Apple service manuals available "out there?" Apple
doesn't put this sort of information in the Tech Info Library. They'd probably
rather you go to an authorized service provider, but I'm not inclined to pay
someone to do something I could do myself. I figure my best bet is probably a
third-party book, but there may not be a large enough market to have ever
generated one.
Any ideas?
To contribute something: Re: the Laserwriter II test page -- Use the
Laserwriter Utility to suppress this. Laserwriter Utility is free from Apple,
on the Mac OS software distribution CDs I believe, but it's very probably not
part of standard installs. You'll have to go looking for it in collateral
folders on the disc or in Custom installation.

P.S. I too wonder about the old "sumex" contribution summary in the info-mac
digest. That's why I originally subscribed, to find out about "all the new
shareware/freeware" (well, most of it). Right now I don't worry too much about
missing it, because I figure it's saving me from wasting time on collecting way
too much software.

Subject: backing up medium
I have been using a 100 meg zip drive for back ups for more than a year, with
perfect success. NO troubles at all, except for the fact 100 meg is not so
large, these days. I can recommend the zip drive, and think that the 250 meg
systems should be fine.
I have just learned about something called an ORB system, by Castelwood. The
machine is cost compatible with a zip drive, and the cartridge holds 2.3 gb.
There are conflicting reports as to reliability. If it is as good as some
people say, I want to buy one.... ON the other hand...

Thanks to the people who wrote me with suggestions. I am still
having problems but I have more information.
I am trying to get a 56K Best Data card to work in a 5300Cs. I
thought the problems was with the script or specific software for the
card not being installed but it seems to be something with the mac
itself or the system.
If I insert the card in the PCMCIA slot of a G3 mac the card loads
and is displayed on the desktop. It also works.
If I insert the card in a 5300cs I get a message: "The correct
software you need to use the PC card in the "Lower (or Upper) Card
slot is not installed. Do you want to eject the card now?" If I
eject it it will eject but if I do not it will appear on the desktop.
Clicking on it brings up the modem port but I have no way to select
the PC card in the 'connect via' window.
Dragging the icon to the trash ejects the card. The card never
powers up as it is cold when I eject it.
The PCMCIA slots are okay. I have an ethernet PC card that works in
either slot.
So what software is missing? I installed system 8.6 from a CD so all
the parts should be there.

Dear Digest readers,
Has anyone figured out how to convert the Church Windows themes to
Kaleidoscope themes? Church Windows preceded Kaleidoscope in
altering the window and icon appearances on the Finder.
Unfortunately Church Windows no longer works on a G3 with MacOS 8.6.
Last time I ran it successfully was under System 7.6.

I am searching for any information about third-party software to access
my Compact Aero 2130 from the Macintosh. Is there a makeover of Windows
CE desktop services that can install on the Mac? Is there a solution to
desktop file sharing and communication with this wonderful unit?
Before purchase I researched as many hand-helds as possible and was so
impressed with the quality of the Compact Aero 2130 that I had to buy it
to use anyway, trusting that eventually someone would figure out a way to
communicate with it from the Mac. Anyone? Thanks.

In general there is no way to convert things from PC to Mac. Having said
that, all image formats like jpeg and gif can be viewed on either platform.
Many word-processor formats these days are cross-platform (same on both).
PDF files are cross-platform. There are many "downloadable things" out
there. Check the Info-Mac archive for some other cool stuff. For specific
things like screens savers though, no you can't unless the software
specifically says you can.

Ah, that would be at the Free Lunch Counter, located just west of the end
of the rainbow, left of the pot of gold.
Briefly - no, and you'll no longer find free Mac MP3 encoders
either. (I don't know the Windows situation, but I assume something's
happening there.) Apparently the MP3 technology now has to be licensed;
that seems to cover the other file formats -> MP3 encoding
algorithm/technology. As for the players, perhaps the amount of work
involved writing them means that they don't want people using them forever
without paying the fee, and anybody smart enough to write an MP3 player
isn't giving their effort away for free.
An understandable question, though, given how many other programs
for doing all sorts of things are available free. (Or at least, as
uncrippled shareware.)

If you mean, to get programs that run on Windows to run on a bare Mac, no.
Some programs have cross-platform applications (Stuffit for
compressing/expanding files). As for screensavers, there are plenty of
(free!) ones out there for the Mac. You might as well get used to having an
iMac not an iPC.

You've probably heard this already, but SoundApp is what you're
looking for. It can play just about any format sound file, and it
definitely fits your budget: it's freeware.
As for your second question - generally, maybe; specifically,
probably not. Many data files created by PC software can be read by a
Mac, but executable programs are machine-specific. A stand-alone
screen saver written for a PC will definitely not run on a Mac. I
don't believe that even the PC After Dark modules are compatible with
the Mac version of After Dark. Sorry.

Subject: How read Word into Quark?
This depends on the version of Word that you are trying to import. Quark 3 (up to
3.32) won't accept anything after Word 5 for Mac. The later versions of Word go
into Quark 4.04 with no problems. Your best bet is to either get the person
writing the text to save it as a Word 5 for Mac (if memory serves, Word 5.1 for
Mac doesn't work either), or as a text only/Dos text/Simpletext file if you don't
mind reformatting it. I take text from pc's and format it in Quark and still
prefer to get it as Dos text/text only/Simpletext along with a hard copy of what
they think it should look like.
To get it into your document, choose the text tool, draw a text box, click in the
text box and hit Command E. If it is one of the above file types it will flow
straight in. It won't even appear in the dialogue box as an option if you can't
use it.

I suggest going to the MacFixit site and applying all the suggested
Microsoft-related fixes (probably listed in reference to MS Internet
Explorer problems). Then allocate more memory to the HotSynch Manager
and Conduit Manager.
I also recommend that you avoid Aladdin's SpaceSaver and Magic Menu
and Norton's CrashGuard.
And make sure your Text Encoding stuff is up to date and synchronised
(all versions the same).

Get LaserWriter Utility. I don't remember if it came with MacOS or is
available from the Info Mac Archive. The version I have has it under the
Utilities Menu - the Set startup page menu item allows you to turn off or
on the test page. Earlier versions used different names for the menu item
but they were very similar.

QuickTime 4 will play them and it's free from Apple.

Good grief, man...
You cannot connect a parallel device to a serial port.
Although this MP3 thing does have a DB25 plug it doesn't mean it's a
serial device. In the PC world
the DB25 is used for parallel and serial connections. The difference
between a serial plug and a parallel plug in the PC world is, that one is
male and the other is female.
But if you don't know the difference between serial and parallel -- well,
then just forget it...

He can use LaserWriter Utility. It has "Set Startup Page"
option in the "Utilities" menu. Guest what it do...

There are two utility programs that apple bundles with system software
that both do the same thing but show the information differently.
Try and get your hands on either:
LaserWriter Utility or
Apple Printer Utility
They both have a choice to have a startup page or to eliminate a start up
page.

I remember doing this once. I think there was once an Apple Utility called
LaserWriter Setup Utility, or something like that. If you can locate it
(start looking on the Apple Software Updates site if you don't have any
likely looking installation disks), it will have an option to turn off the
test page.

John, that's a fairly complex question for this forum. I think your
best bet is to hike over to and/or
(they're sorta the same place, but different)
and look for the "Installation & User Guide for LinuxPPC" which comes
as a .pdf file. There is a whole section entitled "Partitioning your
drive." Also, by no strange coincidence, LinuxPPC is also one of the
places you can purchase a CD-ROM of guess what...
I would also suggest you hang around comp.os.linux.powerpc for awhile.
Most everyone in that group, including myself, are doing just what you
want to do.

Don't forget that LinuxPPC (and I assume mklinux) requires an A/UX
volume. This cannot be created from an HFS+ volume, so remember to
format the partitions you want for Linux as plain HFS.

You bet ,I have used my Zip 100 drive for 3 years without a hiccup.
BUT the original backup software that came with the drive was c**p. =
Restoring files was uncontrollable (all or nothing) and sometimes it =
just would not work. They may supply something better now.
You may also need to look at a Jazz drive if you want to back up a lot =
of data.
I use the following method to back-up our Macs:
I make a folder called 'back-up bin' and put an alias of everything I =
want to back-up in it.=20
I then use Stuffit to create an archive.
I then "Stuff > Add" from the Archive menu 'back-up bin' to the archive
[first you must check that the stuffit preferences are set to follow =
aliases]
I rename the archive with the date [290999.sit].
When I want to do the next back-up I just do the same again only using =
"Add Match" and set the criteria to "modified after 290999"
This give incremental back-up in small(ish) files that are easy to =
search through should a restore be necessary.
This is important as a total Hard drive failure is quite rare; usually =
the problem is that an important file has been deleted or, more likely, =
overwritten. If you know more or less when the file was last modified it =
is quite simple to find it and drag it out of the archive and onto the =
desktop.
Another reason for this system is that if anybody is working on the =
computer and wants to make sure their work is secure all they have to do =
is put an alias of their work in 'back-up bin'.
It is all a lot simpler than it sounds - but if any of you apple script =
type chaps are out there ...

Somebody must have had similar experiences. It drives me cracy.
I have a Performa 5400/180
40 MB Ram
OS 8.1
Netscape 4.5 (20000k)
Quicktime 4.0.1
Whenever a webpage comes in with sound, it plays for 5 - 10 seconds,
then the screen freezes.
On restart, Norton Crash Guard comes on with the message "The
application "Finder" has crashed (Unmapped memory exception)"
There are two saved .midi files (QTPluginTemp) in the trash, one of kind
"document", the other a QuickTime movie.
On opening the first one, the error message "Unexpected problem has
occurred (-2048)" or sometimes (-2003) is displayed.

Subject: Video Update question 7600 series
Hello all
I have tried searching the archives for an answer to my question and
have come up blank. Here is my dilemma.
In an effort to stay up to date on Mac OS and Apps I have upgraded my
7600 to a 333 MHz/167 G3. I currently have 168 MB RAM and 4 MB Video RAM
on the OEM video card using OS 8.6 (OS 9 is on order).
IMnsHO it is not prudent to by a new box until the final 128 bit
G4 arrives sometime in the next Millennia. My machines processor as
configured is very fast but I am wondering if I should install a PCIix3D
ProRez PCI Card (8 MB). Would any difference in screen redraws, scrolling
starting/changing apps be significant enough to be noticeable? BTW I don't
do any games, I just need to keep current with apps/OS for my occupation
and I can't justify adding a $500 - 1000 graphics card.
I occasionally do Video Editing. From reading the lit in a catalog I am
taken to _understand_ the Voodoo card has S and Composite Video Out _but
not_ Video In. True? If so what will happen to my OEM Video/Audio In
ports should I insert a Video Card. Will they still work?
Should I be looking @ something like a Xclaim VR 128 which has video in
and out -
but the lit doesn't mention audio. Or shall I just leave the setup as
is?
Comments with rationale appreciated.

Not yet having a FireWire capable Mac, I am lacking in knowledge of the
FireWire bus.
I understand that FireWire drives are not bootable. Is this a function
of the Apple FireWire driver? Is new hardware required (see Apple's new
USB on the G4, now bootable over USB). Will boot capability be added in
the future?
Also, is there a external device that will convert analog video to
FireWire data? (I have heard rumors that the new iMac will feature a
FireWire port, but not analog video capture)
What other devices currently support FireWire? I have seen the G3/G4,
some Sony video cameras and VST's FireWire harddrive. Is that it?
Are Sony's iLink and Apple's FireWire interchangable? What about other
(knock-off) IEEE9337 (or whatever it is ?!) standard devices?

Subject: Apple Service manuals? Laserwriter Pro 630
I have an Apple Laserwriter 630 that got jammed by a partial sheet of address
labels (a serious printer no-no; I didn't do it). I took apart the "finish
rollers" area where the jam was, got the label bits out, and put it back
together. Everything looks fine, the rollers turn, etc. The only problem is,
the printer still continually jams there. This is at the very last roll-out
rollers, where you can actually see the edge of the paper about to come out,
but it never does.
I could ask for advice, but it's probably a very visual thing. What I'm really
wondering is, are there any Apple service manuals available "out there?" Apple
doesn't put this sort of information in the Tech Info Library. They'd probably
rather you go to an authorized service provider, but I'm not inclined to pay
someone to do something I could do myself. I figure my best bet is probably a
third-party book, but there may not be a large enough market to have ever
generated one.
Any ideas?
To contribute something: Re: the Laserwriter II test page -- Use the
Laserwriter Utility to suppress this. Laserwriter Utility is free from Apple,
on the Mac OS software distribution CDs I believe, but it's very probably not
part of standard installs. You'll have to go looking for it in collateral
folders on the disc or in Custom installation.

Subject: backing up medium
I have been using a 100 meg zip drive for back ups for more than a year, with
perfect success. NO troubles at all, except for the fact 100 meg is not so
large, these days. I can recommend the zip drive, and think that the 250 meg
systems should be fine.
I have just learned about something called an ORB system, by Castelwood. The
machine is cost compatible with a zip drive, and the cartridge holds 2.3 gb.
There are conflicting reports as to reliability. If it is as good as some
people say, I want to buy one.... ON the other hand...

Thanks to the people who wrote me with suggestions. I am still
having problems but I have more information.
I am trying to get a 56K Best Data card to work in a 5300Cs. I
thought the problems was with the script or specific software for the
card not being installed but it seems to be something with the mac
itself or the system.
If I insert the card in the PCMCIA slot of a G3 mac the card loads
and is displayed on the desktop. It also works.
If I insert the card in a 5300cs I get a message: "The correct
software you need to use the PC card in the "Lower (or Upper) Card
slot is not installed. Do you want to eject the card now?" If I
eject it it will eject but if I do not it will appear on the desktop.
Clicking on it brings up the modem port but I have no way to select
the PC card in the 'connect via' window.
Dragging the icon to the trash ejects the card. The card never
powers up as it is cold when I eject it.
The PCMCIA slots are okay. I have an ethernet PC card that works in
either slot.
So what software is missing? I installed system 8.6 from a CD so all
the parts should be there.

Kaleidoscope themes? Church Windows preceded Kaleidoscope in
altering the window and icon appearances on the Finder.
Unfortunately Church Windows no longer works on a G3 with MacOS 8.6.
Last time I ran it successfully was under System 7.6.

In general there is no way to convert things from PC to Mac. Having said
that, all image formats like jpeg and gif can be viewed on either platform.
Many word-processor formats these days are cross-platform (same on both).
PDF files are cross-platform. There are many "downloadable things" out
there. Check the Info-Mac archive for some other cool stuff. For specific
things like screens savers though, no you can't unless the software
specifically says you can.

Ah, that would be at the Free Lunch Counter, located just west of the end
of the rainbow, left of the pot of gold.
Briefly - no, and you'll no longer find free Mac MP3 encoders
either. (I don't know the Windows situation, but I assume something's
happening there.) Apparently the MP3 technology now has to be licensed;
that seems to cover the other file formats -> MP3 encoding
algorithm/technology. As for the players, perhaps the amount of work
involved writing them means that they don't want people using them forever
without paying the fee, and anybody smart enough to write an MP3 player
isn't giving their effort away for free.
An understandable question, though, given how many other programs
for doing all sorts of things are available free. (Or at least, as
uncrippled shareware.)

If you mean, to get programs that run on Windows to run on a bare Mac, no.
Some programs have cross-platform applications (Stuffit for
compressing/expanding files). As for screensavers, there are plenty of
(free!) ones out there for the Mac. You might as well get used to having an
iMac not an iPC.

You've probably heard this already, but SoundApp is what you're
looking for. It can play just about any format sound file, and it
definitely fits your budget: it's freeware.
As for your second question - generally, maybe; specifically,
probably not. Many data files created by PC software can be read by a
Mac, but executable programs are machine-specific. A stand-alone
screen saver written for a PC will definitely not run on a Mac. I
don't believe that even the PC After Dark modules are compatible with
the Mac version of After Dark. Sorry.

Subject: How read Word into Quark?
This depends on the version of Word that you are trying to import. Quark 3 (up to
3.32) won't accept anything after Word 5 for Mac. The later versions of Word go
into Quark 4.04 with no problems. Your best bet is to either get the person
writing the text to save it as a Word 5 for Mac (if memory serves, Word 5.1 for
Mac doesn't work either), or as a text only/Dos text/Simpletext file if you don't
mind reformatting it. I take text from pc's and format it in Quark and still
prefer to get it as Dos text/text only/Simpletext along with a hard copy of what
they think it should look like.
To get it into your document, choose the text tool, draw a text box, click in the
text box and hit Command E. If it is one of the above file types it will flow
straight in. It won't even appear in the dialogue box as an option if you can't
use it.

I suggest going to the MacFixit site and applying all the suggested
Microsoft-related fixes (probably listed in reference to MS Internet
Explorer problems). Then allocate more memory to the HotSynch Manager
and Conduit Manager.
I also recommend that you avoid Aladdin's SpaceSaver and Magic Menu
and Norton's CrashGuard.
And make sure your Text Encoding stuff is up to date and synchronised
(all versions the same).

Get LaserWriter Utility. I don't remember if it came with MacOS or is
available from the Info Mac Archive. The version I have has it under the
Utilities Menu - the Set startup page menu item allows you to turn off or
on the test page. Earlier versions used different names for the menu item
but they were very similar.

Good grief, man...
You cannot connect a parallel device to a serial port.
Although this MP3 thing does have a DB25 plug it doesn't mean it's a
serial device. In the PC world
the DB25 is used for parallel and serial connections. The difference
between a serial plug and a parallel plug in the PC world is, that one is
male and the other is female.
But if you don't know the difference between serial and parallel -- well,
then just forget it...

There are two utility programs that apple bundles with system software
that both do the same thing but show the information differently.
Try and get your hands on either:
LaserWriter Utility or
Apple Printer Utility
They both have a choice to have a startup page or to eliminate a start up
page.

I remember doing this once. I think there was once an Apple Utility called
LaserWriter Setup Utility, or something like that. If you can locate it
(start looking on the Apple Software Updates site if you don't have any
likely looking installation disks), it will have an option to turn off the
test page.

John, that's a fairly complex question for this forum. I think your
best bet is to hike over to and/or
(they're sorta the same place, but different)
and look for the "Installation & User Guide for LinuxPPC" which comes
as a .pdf file. There is a whole section entitled "Partitioning your
drive." Also, by no strange coincidence, LinuxPPC is also one of the
places you can purchase a CD-ROM of guess what...
I would also suggest you hang around comp.os.linux.powerpc for awhile.
Most everyone in that group, including myself, are doing just what you
want to do.

Don't forget that LinuxPPC (and I assume mklinux) requires an A/UX
volume. This cannot be created from an HFS+ volume, so remember to
format the partitions you want for Linux as plain HFS.

You bet ,I have used my Zip 100 drive for 3 years without a hiccup.
BUT the original backup software that came with the drive was c**p. =
Restoring files was uncontrollable (all or nothing) and sometimes it =
just would not work. They may supply something better now.
You may also need to look at a Jazz drive if you want to back up a lot =
of data.
I use the following method to back-up our Macs:
I make a folder called 'back-up bin' and put an alias of everything I =
want to back-up in it.=20
I then use Stuffit to create an archive.
I then "Stuff > Add" from the Archive menu 'back-up bin' to the archive
[first you must check that the stuffit preferences are set to follow =
aliases]
I rename the archive with the date [290999.sit].
When I want to do the next back-up I just do the same again only using =
"Add Match" and set the criteria to "modified after 290999"
This give incremental back-up in small(ish) files that are easy to =
search through should a restore be necessary.
This is important as a total Hard drive failure is quite rare; usually =
the problem is that an important file has been deleted or, more likely, =
overwritten. If you know more or less when the file was last modified it =
is quite simple to find it and drag it out of the archive and onto the =
desktop.
Another reason for this system is that if anybody is working on the =
computer and wants to make sure their work is secure all they have to do =
is put an alias of their work in 'back-up bin'.
It is all a lot simpler than it sounds - but if any of you apple script =
type chaps are out there ...

I have a Performa 5400/180
40 MB Ram
OS 8.1
Netscape 4.5 (20000k)
Quicktime 4.0.1
Whenever a webpage comes in with sound, it plays for 5 - 10 seconds,
then the screen freezes.
On restart, Norton Crash Guard comes on with the message "The
application "Finder" has crashed (Unmapped memory exception)"
There are two saved .midi files (QTPluginTemp) in the trash, one of kind
"document", the other a QuickTime movie.
On opening the first one, the error message "Unexpected problem has
occurred (-2048)" or sometimes (-2003) is displayed.
SimpleSound on its own doesn't play the second (QT) file, but
SimpleSound with QT Translation translates it and then I can play it in
SS.
Can somebody please give me a tip?

Hello all
I have tried searching the archives for an answer to my question and
have come up blank. Here is my dilemma.
In an effort to stay up to date on Mac OS and Apps I have upgraded my
7600 to a 333 MHz/167 G3. I currently have 168 MB RAM and 4 MB Video RAM
on the OEM video card using OS 8.6 (OS 9 is on order).
IMnsHO it is not prudent to by a new box until the final 128 bit
G4 arrives sometime in the next Millennia. My machines processor as
configured is very fast but I am wondering if I should install a PCIix3D
ProRez PCI Card (8 MB). Would any difference in screen redraws, scrolling
starting/changing apps be significant enough to be noticeable? BTW I don't
do any games, I just need to keep current with apps/OS for my occupation
and I can't justify adding a $500 - 1000 graphics card.
I occasionally do Video Editing. From reading the lit in a catalog I am
taken to _understand_ the Voodoo card has S and Composite Video Out _but
not_ Video In. True? If so what will happen to my OEM Video/Audio In
ports should I insert a Video Card. Will they still work?
Should I be looking @ something like a Xclaim VR 128 which has video in
and out -
but the lit doesn't mention audio. Or shall I just leave the setup as
is?
Comments with rationale appreciated.
