Subject: (Q) Video Capture on a Wallstreet (Sept. 1998 model)
Dear Digest readers,
I have lots of old video cassettes in VHS format, and wondered what
would be the cheapest solution to convert all of them over into
Sorenson video based Quicktime files using my Powerbook G3 233 with
512k backside. I noticed two intriguing cards at

Now do you know if either of these cards come with all the necessary
software for video capture? I just want to do direct video capture
with no image enhancement. It's just so I can watch the old shows
that I have recorded before their image quality get's loss due to
wear of the VHS cassette. The reason I want to do Sorenson, is that
I saw the quality of the movie trailers which I assume use Sorenson,
and the fact that a 2 minute 480 x 320 resolution video could be
stored in as little as 6 MB. Is Cinepak equal in compression and
quality to Sorenson?
I have QuickTime 4.0 Pro, and 192MB of RAM. I assume that other
than the video capture card and software I will have all I need to
play these Quicktime films. Is there anything else I might need?
What is the quickest capture rate that I can get the VHS at, assuming
I play through at normal speed. I.e. what framerate should I use?
And what resolution preserves quality good enough to be expanded to
1024 x 768 resolution?

Just open the "Memory" control panel and set "32 bit addressing" to "On"
-- no need for a jumper or such...

I think your problem is that you have 32 bit addressing turned off in your
memory control panel. Try turning it on and restarting your Macintosh.
This problem goes away if you have System 7.5 or later.

As far as I know, Microsoft NetShow does this, although I've never been able
to find an ASF file in order to verify it. You should be able to download it
from Microsoft (don't have a URL handy, sorry).

once found an application patcher which would make selected
applications recognize them, probably by simulating a keyclick in the
upper or lower part of the scrollbar, respectively.

I'm looking at buying an older PowerBook G3, the 233Mhz 14.1" screen
model. However, the first rendition only had one screen resolution
available, and the next version was capable of 3 resolutions. I need the
3-resolution version, but how do I know which is which without turning it
on? I'll probably buy one from one of the many used computer dealers, and
the ones I've called so far can't (won't?) tell me what version they are
selling. They don't want to bother turning the thing on (for which I don't
blame them, really, since they have a lot of stock, etc., etc.)
The Apple spec pages don't give any clues on how to solve this problem.
Any suggestions?

iCab will do the first part. It's a small and fast browser
still in development, but in my experience no more crash-prone than
Netscape. Go to Preferences:HTML Display for the GIF animations. It can
also filter out banner ads - Preferences:Image Filters. Best of all, it is
free at the moment.
Pop-up windows are more of a problem. I never visit a GeoCities site, for
this reason, but there other sites that offend in this way besides
GeoCities. I did see a control panel, but I can't remember the name.
Usually, if one appears, I close it with the mouse before any content
appears, and, I hope, before it has a chance to freeze my machine.

I would be.
Don't enable guest access to anything. Turn off FTP servers if you don't
need them, etc. Don't enable web sharing. Cable modems create a local
network which your neighbor could access your system from. On the other
hand Macs have been shown to be one of the most secure OS's provided you do
what I mentioned above. Turning off File Sharing makes you 99% protected
providing you don't have other things like above on.

If you aren't operating any services, then you really have nothing to
worry about. If you're only running AppleTalk services, you probably still
have little or nothing to worry about. If you're running AppleTalk over
IP, then there may be some paranoia justified.
I don't know this for a fact with your particular cable modem, but it is
most likely a "router" as opposed to a "bridge," and therefore blocks
AppleTalk.
Anecdotal evidence: I see no other machines in my Chooser. However,
there's about a dozen show up on my subnet in a Winblows Network
Neighborhood...

Would appreciate any suggestions on how to eliminate the error message "the
magenta ink cartride is either empty or missing" for a Color Stylewriter Pro
inkjet printer. (Yeah, I know it's an old printer). I've replaced the ink
cartridge (two times) and cleaned the contacts from the print head to the
ribbon cable amongst other things. The printer was sitting idle for about a
year, and previously did not have this problem. Also, is there any source
for print heads for this printer?

The only way I know to get it to happen automatically is to import
your bookmarks from Netscape into URL Manager Pro, sort them as you
wish, then export back to Netscape (or just keep using URL Manager
Pro's own bookmark menu within Netscape, which is the method
preferred by many people). This method I suggest is easy and will
definitely do what you want. I believe that the description in the
Netscape Help file applies to an older version of Netscape or to the
Windows version. Something like that. It definitely does NOT match
the Mac version of Netscape, just as you have observed!

I get the idea from the section on "Counters" in Documentation Part I
of NetPresenz that maybe counters are built in, and all you need to
do is to put in the commands given in the documentation? I could well
be (probably am?) wrong, but maybe that's all you need for the
Counter part of your question.
I don't have any idea about the searches, and wish I had time now to
pursue it, but would love to know what you do learn about these
things, if you could remember to info me when you have it solved.

I opened up one of our G3/300's and it looks like there is room for
another drive in there (maybe more). There is a multiplug power cord
and at least one mounting site. Is the 6GB drive in there an IDE
drive? I would like to buy one of the new cheap 20 GB IDE (Quantum
QM320400CX-A) drives in it. Is there a way I can do this and still
keep the other drive? Do I have to purchase a card or is there room
for expansion?

I noticed that Mac OS 8.6 on both PMac G3/266 and Powerbook G3/233
sometimes is unable to correctly rebuild the desktop, resultion in
incorrect file icons and freezes of the Mac.
I found lately this note to FileBuddy:
"File Buddy 5 has been used extensively with Mac OS 8, 8.1, and OS 8.5. So
far there are only two known problems: 1) The Finder may get confused and
not display the correct icons after using File Buddy to rebuild the
desktop. This is due to a bug in the Finder."
Is the problem I noticed above linked to the FileBuddy note someway?
Anybody experienced the same problems with MacOS 8.6?

I have a XLR8 G3 233MHz card in a PowerCenter 132 system. It runs a
lot faster and was dead easy to install. My machine is a desktop model
rather than a tower system, but it is effectively a tower on it's

You can't miss the daughter card though. It is fairly large with a big

According to xlr8's website, the XLR8 MachSpeed G3 is compatible with
the PowerCenter:

Yes. I have a PowerCenter 120 which I upgraded with a PowerLogix 220
G3 card. It's a simple job. True, the PCC manual doesn't discuss
it, but the upgrade card manual surely will walk you through it [my
PowerLogix manual did].
Basically, you'll install the G3 card's support software, then shut
down your machine, open it up, and look for the card with the big
heat sink on it. This is the processor daughtercard. Take this card
out, put your new G3 card in, press the CUDA reset button for 30
seconds [this is a red button on the motherboard near the processor
card], then turn the machine back on. Done.

I have done this on a Performa 5300, which is basically the same
machine. On the back you will find a panel you can take off (by
removing two screws and "unclicking" two plastic thingies that attach
the panel to the bottom of the casing). The screws are fairly normal.
The hard disk is mounted on a standard plastic caddy. Simply remove the
cables, put them aside and pull the plastic caddy towards you. The
caddy is attached to the disk drive with two or three screws on the
bottom.
Beware! Not all IDE disks work with the Performa 5200. The first two
disks I tried (both Quantum Fireball) didn't work at all. Later I found
one which did work (Western Digital I think, but I cannot remember for
sure). Write me if you would like to know.
For the rest, standard advice: be careful, remove the power cord before
doing anything (and also the TV-cable if you happen to have one
attached to your AV-card), beware of static electricity and these
things.

Any modern drive [last several years] is at least SCSI-2. You can
use any SCSI drive with a standard 50-pin SCSI connector on it. An
Ultra-SCSI drive with a 50-pin connection is fine, for example.
You don't need to seek out any sort of special source. Any hard
drive vendor can sell you a suitable drive. You may need to stop
confusing the sales people, however.
Just ask for a SCSI hard
drive with a 50-pin connection and you'll be fine [if they ask, that
50-pin connection should be low-density]

An old SE is ideal for MIDI applications. You will need the Apple MIDI
Manager software first of all, available from Apple's software updates site
I expect. Note that it is no longer supported, but OMS, the replacement,
will be less useful for legacy MIDI applications that you are likely to
use. You will also need a MIDI interface. There are a couple of plans in
the info-mac archive telling you how to make your own, if you are into
electronics.
Here are some ideas for MIDI applications that might work:
Megalomania: Real-time effects processing
MIDIScope: Trouble-shooting your MIDI setup
MIDI Control: Send MIDI control messages
MIDIGraphy: Shareware sequencer. Don't know if this will work on a small
B&W screen.
All these should be available for download from the internet. You may have
to go to the Unich archive for some of them, as they seem to have
disappeared from info-mac. Scour the info-mac midi folder - there's a lot
there, and it is worth spending some time sorting through it.

Dear Digest readers,
I have lots of old video cassettes in VHS format, and wondered what
would be the cheapest solution to convert all of them over into
Sorenson video based Quicktime files using my Powerbook G3 233 with
512k backside. I noticed two intriguing cards at

Now do you know if either of these cards come with all the necessary
software for video capture? I just want to do direct video capture
with no image enhancement. It's just so I can watch the old shows
that I have recorded before their image quality get's loss due to
wear of the VHS cassette. The reason I want to do Sorenson, is that
I saw the quality of the movie trailers which I assume use Sorenson,
and the fact that a 2 minute 480 x 320 resolution video could be
stored in as little as 6 MB. Is Cinepak equal in compression and
quality to Sorenson?
I have QuickTime 4.0 Pro, and 192MB of RAM. I assume that other
than the video capture card and software I will have all I need to
play these Quicktime films. Is there anything else I might need?
What is the quickest capture rate that I can get the VHS at, assuming
I play through at normal speed. I.e. what framerate should I use?
And what resolution preserves quality good enough to be expanded to
1024 x 768 resolution?

I think your problem is that you have 32 bit addressing turned off in your
memory control panel. Try turning it on and restarting your Macintosh.
This problem goes away if you have System 7.5 or later.

As far as I know, Microsoft NetShow does this, although I've never been able

I'm looking at buying an older PowerBook G3, the 233Mhz 14.1" screen
model. However, the first rendition only had one screen resolution
available, and the next version was capable of 3 resolutions. I need the
3-resolution version, but how do I know which is which without turning it
on? I'll probably buy one from one of the many used computer dealers, and
the ones I've called so far can't (won't?) tell me what version they are
selling. They don't want to bother turning the thing on (for which I don't
blame them, really, since they have a lot of stock, etc., etc.)
The Apple spec pages don't give any clues on how to solve this problem.
Any suggestions?

iCab will do the first part. It's a small and fast browser
still in development, but in my experience no more crash-prone than
Netscape. Go to Preferences:HTML Display for the GIF animations. It can
also filter out banner ads - Preferences:Image Filters. Best of all, it is
free at the moment.
Pop-up windows are more of a problem. I never visit a GeoCities site, for
this reason, but there other sites that offend in this way besides
GeoCities. I did see a control panel, but I can't remember the name.
Usually, if one appears, I close it with the mouse before any content
appears, and, I hope, before it has a chance to freeze my machine.

I would be.
Don't enable guest access to anything. Turn off FTP servers if you don't
need them, etc. Don't enable web sharing. Cable modems create a local
network which your neighbor could access your system from. On the other
hand Macs have been shown to be one of the most secure OS's provided you do
what I mentioned above. Turning off File Sharing makes you 99% protected
providing you don't have other things like above on.

If you aren't operating any services, then you really have nothing to
worry about. If you're only running AppleTalk services, you probably still
have little or nothing to worry about. If you're running AppleTalk over
IP, then there may be some paranoia justified.
I don't know this for a fact with your particular cable modem, but it is
most likely a "router" as opposed to a "bridge," and therefore blocks
AppleTalk.
Anecdotal evidence: I see no other machines in my Chooser. However,
there's about a dozen show up on my subnet in a Winblows Network
Neighborhood...

inkjet printer. (Yeah, I know it's an old printer). I've replaced the ink
cartridge (two times) and cleaned the contacts from the print head to the
ribbon cable amongst other things. The printer was sitting idle for about a
year, and previously did not have this problem. Also, is there any source
for print heads for this printer?

your bookmarks from Netscape into URL Manager Pro, sort them as you

definitely do what you want. I believe that the description in the
Netscape Help file applies to an older version of Netscape or to the
Windows version. Something like that. It definitely does NOT match
the Mac version of Netscape, just as you have observed!

of NetPresenz that maybe counters are built in, and all you need to
do is to put in the commands given in the documentation? I could well

Counter part of your question.
I don't have any idea about the searches, and wish I had time now to
pursue it, but would love to know what you do learn about these
things, if you could remember to info me when you have it solved.

One sure way would be for him to translate the files into PDF files
before publishing them to the web. Another would be to make JPEGs of
the pages and publish them as pictures rather than as text. Or maybe
just the formulae could be JPEGs and the rest be text?

I opened up one of our G3/300's and it looks like there is room for
another drive in there (maybe more). There is a multiplug power cord
and at least one mounting site. Is the 6GB drive in there an IDE
drive? I would like to buy one of the new cheap 20 GB IDE (Quantum
QM320400CX-A) drives in it. Is there a way I can do this and still
keep the other drive? Do I have to purchase a card or is there room
for expansion?

sometimes is unable to correctly rebuild the desktop, resultion in
incorrect file icons and freezes of the Mac.
I found lately this note to FileBuddy:
"File Buddy 5 has been used extensively with Mac OS 8, 8.1, and OS 8.5. So
far there are only two known problems: 1) The Finder may get confused and
not display the correct icons after using File Buddy to rebuild the
desktop. This is due to a bug in the Finder."
Is the problem I noticed above linked to the FileBuddy note someway?
Anybody experienced the same problems with MacOS 8.6?

Hi Ezra
I have a XLR8 G3 233MHz card in a PowerCenter 132 system. It runs a
lot faster and was dead easy to install. My machine is a desktop model
rather than a tower system, but it is effectively a tower on it's
side, so I think it will be similar to yours.
You can get specs of these machines from the Apple Web site by
searching the TIL page for PowerComputing.
You can't miss the daughter card though. It is fairly large with a big
heatsink on it to cool the processor.

According to xlr8's website, the XLR8 MachSpeed G3 is compatible with
the PowerCenter:

Yes. I have a PowerCenter 120 which I upgraded with a PowerLogix 220
G3 card. It's a simple job. True, the PCC manual doesn't discuss
it, but the upgrade card manual surely will walk you through it [my
PowerLogix manual did].
Basically, you'll install the G3 card's support software, then shut
down your machine, open it up, and look for the card with the big
heat sink on it. This is the processor daughtercard. Take this card
out, put your new G3 card in, press the CUDA reset button for 30
seconds [this is a red button on the motherboard near the processor
card], then turn the machine back on. Done.

I have done this on a Performa 5300, which is basically the same
machine. On the back you will find a panel you can take off (by
removing two screws and "unclicking" two plastic thingies that attach
the panel to the bottom of the casing). The screws are fairly normal.
The hard disk is mounted on a standard plastic caddy. Simply remove the
cables, put them aside and pull the plastic caddy towards you. The
caddy is attached to the disk drive with two or three screws on the
bottom.
Beware! Not all IDE disks work with the Performa 5200. The first two
disks I tried (both Quantum Fireball) didn't work at all. Later I found
one which did work (Western Digital I think, but I cannot remember for
sure). Write me if you would like to know.
For the rest, standard advice: be careful, remove the power cord before
doing anything (and also the TV-cable if you happen to have one
attached to your AV-card), beware of static electricity and these
things.

Any modern drive [last several years] is at least SCSI-2. You can
use any SCSI drive with a standard 50-pin SCSI connector on it. An
Ultra-SCSI drive with a 50-pin connection is fine, for example.
You don't need to seek out any sort of special source. Any hard
drive vendor can sell you a suitable drive. You may need to stop
confusing the sales people, however.
Just ask for a SCSI hard drive with a 50-pin connection and you'll be fine [if they ask, that
50-pin connection should be low-density]

An old SE is ideal for MIDI applications. You will need the Apple MIDI
Manager software first of all, available from Apple's software updates site
I expect. Note that it is no longer supported, but OMS, the replacement,
will be less useful for legacy MIDI applications that you are likely to
use. You will also need a MIDI interface. There are a couple of plans in
the info-mac archive telling you how to make your own, if you are into
electronics.
Here are some ideas for MIDI applications that might work:
Megalomania: Real-time effects processing
MIDIScope: Trouble-shooting your MIDI setup
MIDI Control: Send MIDI control messages
MIDIGraphy: Shareware sequencer. Don't know if this will work on a small
B&W screen.
All these should be available for download from the internet. You may have
to go to the Unich archive for some of them, as they seem to have
disappeared from info-mac. Scour the info-mac midi folder - there's a lot
there, and it is worth spending some time sorting through it.
