Apple Rolls Out Mac OS 8.6

Subject: (Q) G3 upgrade cards that work with 8.6
Dear Digest readers,
On MacCentral's MacOS forum I have read that some Sonnet and VImage cards
don't work with MacOS 8.6. Now it makes me wonder if there are specific
cards out there that will cause crashing conditions in 8.6, and others that
will not? To make matters more interesting all the people who posted in
MacCentral posted regarding the prerelease Saturday posting of 8.6 to
Apple's ftp site, or a copy on Hotline of 8.6.
I have also read that some Nubus Video cards don't work with System 8.0 or
higher.
In addition, the DOS Card that Apple put in the 7600 and other machines may
or may not work with 8.6 according to MacFixit.
So if you have had problems with cards and upgrades of the OS, I'd be
interested in conducting a survey:
1. What Macintosh did you attempt to upgrade?
2. What OS did you first see problems after adding the card?
3. Was it the Official OS release, or the one before the official date?
4. Where did you get the OS upgrade (Apple, Hotline, some other ftp site
etc...)?
5. Which card did you use that started causing incompatibilities?
All responses will be held confidential. If I get sufficient responses I
may post the results on my web site.
Sincerely,
[email protected]

I wrote a database for a small group in HyperCard (initially, the server
was going to be a spare SE/30). When they moved it from a 68040 Mac to a
601 PowerMac, access was SLOWER, not just not faster. The solution that
time was to upgrade to HyperCard 2.3.5 (now up to 2.4.1) for a
PowerPC-native version. That's the only generic answer I have. Are you
running 2.3.5+?
I do wonder about your externals (how often used, if 68K code). You might
want to look at http://www.hyperactivesw.com/HCSC3.html#imhc for speed-up
tips.

Marlon,
HC 2.3.5 - 2.4.1 (current) are PPC native. If you are not running one of
these, then you are getting the code emulated. If you have 2.3.5, you can
get the free upgrade to 2.4.1 from Apple's web site.
It also depends on what systems you went from. A 100mHz 040 will probably
probably run about the same as an 80mHz PPC so you will not see much
difference. If you have a new machine (>200 mHz) then you should notice a
serious improvement in speed. I have a 80mHz, 180mHz and a 266 mHz
machines and the 266 juts rips compared to the other two.

I know this sounds elementary, but have you read Appendix C in the HC
Script language guide: "Enhancing the Execution Speed of HC" ? There are
10 or so very good tips there. If you haven't got the book, it may even
be on Apple's website.
You could also consider compiling some of your most-used subroutines
using something like CompileIt. I shied away from using this, because
some knowledge of the Mac Toolbox is required, but I think it should be
trivial stuff for even a novice programmer.
Finally, if your databases are very large, (and you don't need HC's
free-text searching) you may want to move them to another app. I have a
30,000-card stack that runs at an acceptable speed on a 7300, but I would
have thought that if you are nearing 100,000 records then something like
Filemaker might be quicker.

I am running 8.5 on a G3. My system is quite stable with the exception

1) It misses files containing a particular key word and
2) It gives files that don't contain particular words.
Apple claimed that it was a problem with my machine so I reinitialized
