Hi Ezra
In my experience of sending enclosures, the most reliable way to send
almost anything is encoding Base 64, with no compression. The modem
itself does some compression, and further compression using eg zip or
stuff probably does not speed transmission much, and only leads to extra
problems when the documents arrive.
I've found that Base 64 works best even with Mac users on a network --
possibly because their mail server is a PC.
Most of my clients have Macs on their desks, but only one needs enclosure
BinHex'd. The rest can only read documents encoded Base 64. (Though it
has to be said that many computer users -- Mac and PC -- are so ignorant
and idle that they don't know what enclosures are, how to deal with them
or even find them, and what to do with them .)

In Dan Frake's InformInit, it says under the Microsoft Office 4.2.1 section:
* MTExt (a font): supposedly there are actually two of these files, a
suitcase and a postscript
font. The font itself is usually found in the Extensions Folder.
Well, I have the postscript font in the Extensions folder but not any
suitcase in the Fonts folder. On the other hand, I now use Office 98, so I
don't know if that's why the suitcase is missing??
Anyway, I seem to recall having seen that font around for a long time,
maybe even before Office 4.2.1. It always came with MS Word, I believe. I
think it's for making equations in Word. Can anyone correct me?

Subject: (A) Norton and MacOS 8.1 and above
Dear Digest readers,
After reading the Digest since Norton 4.0.3's release and several other
posts on other newsgroups I have some sad news. Norton has yet to fix the
problems it has with MacOS 8.1 and above. HFS+ is the primary culprit,
but I have seen problems with HFS only. My recommendation to anyone with
MacOS 8.1 or higher, is to trash Norton, and only use Disk First Aid. If
you have errors DFA can't fix, then it is time to reformat your hard disk.
Only the Disk First Aid that came with MacOS 8.5.1 works reliably with
systems 8.1 and above. Sorry for having to part the bad news, and while
YMMV, if you suddenly start seeing data corruption from Norton Disk Doctor
or Crash Guard, remove Norton before it erases your hard disk.
MacOS 8.0 can take Norton Disk Doctor of any version, but not 8.1, 8.5,
and 8.5.1.
Norton Anti-Virus on the other hand works without problems on any MacOS
version.
Just a word of caution from someone who lost their entire hard disk due to
Norton's programming errors.

A recently released MacCentral article:

talks about a rewritable 40 GB optical drive with 15MB per second transfer
rates to a single disk. Sounds like DVD has met its match. DVD's limit
was 17GB, and for that matter most DVD-RAM drives are only 5.2GB. No
wonder drive prices have come down so much lately. Everyone is waiting
for this technology to break the market.
Now let's see
10 MB = 2 thousand pages of text
1 GB = 2.048 million pages of text
40 GB > 80 million pages of text, or 80,000 volumes of the "Complete works
of Shakespeare".
25MB = 2.5 minute "Star Wars I Trailer" (edition released last month) in
full screen video
1 GB = 90 minutes
40 GB = 3600 minutes or 60 hours of video!
Holy cow! 10 VHS video tapes on a single CD.
Now remember this is non-magnetic technology. Mass storage to the extreme.

I asked this before in a rather un-informed way and since then I've
investigated it a bit further.
Two loyal Info-Mac people offered suggestions, but I still have no
explanation for what I'm seeing.
On a G3 which is client to a Windows served network there seems to be a
limit to the number of files which will appear in the Open... or Save...
dialogue.
The machine is attempting to access a folder on the server containing
more than 4,000 files.
Using Photoshop 5 the file list starts with a dialogue saying something
like, "There are too many files. Some of them will not be shown" and
then only 682 files show on the list.
Using GraphicConvertor 3.5 I get the same results; 682 files and the same
OK warning.
I even tried using BBEdit to access the same folder and I only got 682
files there too.
When I used Sherlock to see the list it maxed out at 3,800 files due to
limited memory allocation.
This is something either in the network area or a limitation of the Mac
OS to allow applications wider access to a "foreign" network which is
non-HFS (perhaps?).
Can anyone enlighten me about whether I can make Mac Apps see more files
through some arcane but necessary voodoo or point me to technical notes
which explain how and why the limitation happens so we might either gain
better "server" side performance or provide the "right kind" of file
listing to see all those important files. If I'm missing an obvious FAQ
here I'd appreciate hearing that too.
The machine in question is running OS 8.6b4 and has DAVE services on
board as well as both RAM Doubler and Speed Doubler running on it. I can
hear the first chorus of "turn off RAM-D and Speed-D" and you'll get
better files. But I'd rather hear the real reasons this fails.
If this really is an OS or Net limitation then it bears badly on the Mac
in this Win heavy environment.

Has anyone experience of Mac Word 8 attachments sent from Eudora that are
invisible to some MS email systems on the PC? I only noticed this when
upgrading to Office 98, and have had the problem with both Eudora Pro 3
and 4. The attachment is definitelly there, but the PC user is unable to
see it. A workaround seems to be to include more than one attachment!
Anybody know the answer to this? Apologies if it has been answered before
- I have not been reading Info-Mac very regularly.

Gang,
Need the collective wisdom of the InfoMac Digest (Al Bloom, et al) to help
me with the Middle Age Mind Decisson Making Process (got to be an acronym
in there somewhere).
I need a new monitor for work. Sigh! My olde Radius GDM 1950 is
hopelessly out of alignment and the Tech's say they can't get it back into
alignment. Sigh! Here's my what I do:
- Program Manager (re: Project Management Stuff) with too much email
- Use MS Office 98 especially PowerPoint
- Netscape 4.51
- Love to have neat Desktop pictures but don't do graphics such as
PhotoShop, etc.
Monitor is mainly for office work, but, since I'm a paperless type of guy,
I like to see as much as possible on the screen (full page) as my Middle
Age Eyes can see. So, I run 1024 x 768. Thus, I need a quality monitor
and I'm favoring two types of monitors:
- Apple Studio Display. I've seen this LCD run 1024 x768 and I'm
impressed; and,
- New crop of 19" monitors with 18" visible such as Viewsonic's
MD7515 (?)
and the Diamond 900u.
If anyboy has one these puppies or something better, tell me what you think
of it. How did you come to buy it? What do you use it for?
I think the bottom line is I read text - I don't need a DTP monitor 'cause
I don't want to see pixles that make up the text. I gotta stare at this
thing for a good portion of the 10 hour day as I do my paperless thing.
(Ahh, hell, it's really "paper lite", isn't it?!)
BTW, here's what's driving the monitor - a 7600 G3 (300/1/150), 96MB, Ultra
Wide, ATI GA (?) graphics card with both Apple & VGA output. It's been
goosed so many times that it looks like a Hot Rod 64 Chrysler 300. Makes
the PeeCee guys wantabe's.

Subject: Bad 1710AV monitors - The Apple Runaround!
Has someone formed a support group for 1710AV monitors yet!
We have two dead 1710AV monitors in the last month. One belongs to
our lab and it died in March. The other is my own and it died last
week about 15 days after the 90 day warranty expired. It had been
replaced on December 17th for the same problem.
I bought my home one about 2.5 years ago and it never was able to
hold any resolution except the 640 X 480. I opened a case report
with Apple and they told me it was the PB5300 that I had hooked up to
it. In December last year when I hooked it up to a Centris 610 and
found out I had the same problem. I called Apple back and they told
me to bring it in. They found a problem with a card and gave me a
refurbished one. They told me I was lucky I brought it in before the
end of the year as their extended warranty program was ending.
So in March the 1710AV in the lab comes down with the same problem.
I called and they told me the only option was to replace the card for
$$300. I told them that I was aware of the quality problem with
these monitors and I thought that they should repair it. They told
me the only recourse I had was to repair it. So it is in the shop
waiting for new cards.
Last week the 1710AV that they gave me in December died. It will not
come on at all. I took it to Microdisk her at Stanford and they said
the it is a problem with the same card. I called Apple and suggested
that they should repair it since the repair warranty is only a 15
days expired and it is a known problem. They told me too bad. They
did tell me that I could upgrade to a 17 inch Studio display for
$350. I wasn't sure which one it was. Is this the Imac looking
display that sells for about $499? No speakers and it only runs on a
PPC or better. That means I will get $150 for my 1710AV towards a new
monitor.
What is going on with Apple? I have 13 inch monitors in our lab from
1986 that are still going strong. The 1710AV monitors have problems.
I bought this monitor for $1000 and thought it would be my last as I
spend money upgrading CPUs instead.
What recourse do I have? Apple has always stood by their products in
the past. I have endured defective PB5300 and numbers defective hard
drives that Apple has bent over backward to repair. Their service
has always been outstanding. I am really left with a bad feeling on
this issue though.

First thing to try: drag the downloaded file to StuffIt Expander, and see
if it decodes into a usable application file. The reason it opened IE is
because IE screws with your Internet preferences so it becomes the
application of choice for nearly every type of document. Bad IE! Bad, bad
IE!
If Expander doesn't work, your best bet may be to re-download the file
with Fetch or Anarchie instead of IE.

Do you have the latest and greatest hard disk driver software
installed? If not, check VersionTracker for the latest version of Drive
Setup, HDT or whatever you're using.
Have you tried setting Ram Doubler to "File Mapping Only" and observed
the results?
Does the problem still exist when you run with Extensions disabled?
Time for a conflict test?
I've run out of ideas, but I'm sure you'll get a few more suggestions.

Here is an active link for Netscape 2.02.
fwiw, my daughter has been using an old LC with 10 megs, NN 2.02 and Eudora
Light to surf the net and I concur with everything Ian mentioned. Some
things are slower than molasses in winter but it is usable for surfing.

Subject: file sharing user limit
In my office we have 16 macs, ranging from G3s to a creaky Mac II, on an
ethernet LAN. Our shared files are stored on a performa 6400 which has file
sharing enabled. The problem I have encountered with this setup is that the
server won't allow more than 10 users to connect to it at any one time.
This currently isn't a serious problem, but it may be in the near future
when we add another three computers to the network. For the most part the
system works fine, and I would prefer to avoid the added expense and
complexity of using appleshare ip. Besides, I don't think the currently
available version of asip would run on our older machines.
So, I'm wondering if there is a way to overcome the 10 user login limit
under finder's file sharing without having to set up server software. Is
there is another software solution or a hack available for this?

I've been using the KeySpan USB-to-Serial adapter (I think it was
around $50) for modem, digital camera, Palm Pilot. I haven't used it for a
printer, but it's been flawless for these other uses.

that the ImageWriter I and II are not supported. I'm only writing as this
is an interesting tidbit in general - a list of devices supported by the

I don't know about AppleScript, but how about using the little Control
Strip module called "AppleTalk Switch"? It shows you with one click
whether your AppleTalk is active or inactive, and lets you switch in the
same motion.

If I'm understanding the problem correctly, then it seems to me you have
downloaded the encoded version of the utility. You could try holding the
Option key while you click the download link, and see if that causes it to
place a proper installer on your hard drive. If not, you could save the
whole big encoded mess as a Plain Text file on your hard drive. Then drop
that on StuffIt Expander and see if it turns it into an installer. If not,
try dropping it on YABase64 or other decoder. (For instance, I like Decoder
1.3.7.)

I'm preparing a talk on copyright issues and am looking for a small app
called Homer (as in Simpson).
This was a fairly basic program written some years ago by a couple of
Australian school boys - it put a small window on the desktop with Homer's
face in it. The eyes followed the cursor around (I think) and it spoke
Homerisms at random times. The wrath of 20th Century Fox's legal dept came
down upon the perpetrators of this piece of fun and they were aske dto
cease and desist.
It seems that they did indeed do just that as a quick search of the web has
found no trace of it.
I'd much appreciate if anyone out there knows what I'm talking about and
could put me in touch with a copy of the app.

I have ADSL here in Cincinnati and security is not a problem.
Cincinnati Bell outfitted me with a Cisco 675 ADSL modem, which is a NAT so
nobody gets through it unless I set the Cisco up to let them.
Also because IPs are assigned dynamically to my ADSL modem, it's hard to
figure out which computer is whose. Some kind soul has set up a utility and
a web site to let people find out their IP address from the web, but under
normal circumstances it would be very hard to get hacked...

Hi again.
I read in a document that came with the latest version of DeafultFolder
that sometime in recent history, somebody (probably Apple) wrote and
distributed something called the Navigation Services 1.0 extension.
Evidently, as was inferred in the doc, this init was for both 68K Macs
and PPCs not running OS8.5, to enable them to use stuff like Favorites
and the new Open and Save dialog box dingles.
If anyone knows where this extension can be found, or has a copy to send,

said that it was a control panel he could not live without. So I downloaded
it. Apparently it solves the modal dialog problem.
What is a modal dialog. Do I and my loved ones have them? I am afraid to

I think their

No offense Daly, but several people on the Palm usenet groups HAVE
reported success synching Palms to their IrDA devices such as iMacs AND
PowerBooks that use IrDA. They report flawless hot synchs. I haven't
heard Palm officially say this is not possible, either. The files to put
in your System Folder to do the IrDA hotsynch are in the new 2.1 Palm
Desktop download package. I don't have either an iMac nor a PowerBook
that supports IrDA myself, so I can't testify to how well all this works
first hand. However, when one says that they didn't have success
performing a particular action it doesn't mean that it is impossible or
unachievable!
Also, re: the error message that accompanies quitting the 2.1 version of
Palm Desktop would *not* be due to an extension conflict (at least, not
in my case). Reason being that Palm Desktop is an application unto
itself and I run it when not synching with the Instant Palm Desktop, Hot
Synch Memory, and other Palm necessities *not loaded*. Using Palm
Desktop by itself doesn't require the Palm extensions. They are only
necessary to hotsynch.
Finally, as for keeping a separate set for Palm goodies in your
Extensions Manager, it really is the way to go for most people. Hot
Synch Memory is still on the "buggy" side and in the prior versions of
the Palm software for the Mac, the Serial Port Arbitrator was constantly
"polling" the serial ports and would totally interfere with any printing
or use of Appletalk. And in my case, Instant Palm Desktop still conflicts
with 3rd party extensions, so I have the Palm set in the Extensions
Manager load with only the Mac OS 8.5 Base extensions.

HotSync works fine between the IrDA port on my PowerBook G3/300 and
my Palm V. It can be a little touchy if you're moving the Palm
around while it's hot-synching, but I haven't seen any other problems
in the few days I've owned the Palm V. I just dragged the
Palm-supplied extensions into the extensions folder, rebooted, and
then set the HotSync Manager and the Palm V to both use their IrDA
ports.

Sorry, guys, tried to search the digests, but couldn't come up with any

allows you to custom-set the battery-level at which your Powerbook will go
to sleep?
Threshold also showed the voltage.
My PB1400 battery is giving me only an hour after using Battery
Reconditioner (which came with the PB), and a lot less if the CD-ROM is in
the expansion bay (even if it is empty!).
Any ideas would be very much welcome.

Since SWB service probably forbids you to run a WebServer at home, I
believe that any hardware-based router/firewall is almost certainly an
overkill. Apple file sharing (either plain or IP-Share) is much more
robust than that of Windows, assuming that you use good password
disciplines and *never* allow "Guest Access" when you set up sharing.
Also, unless you have access to genuine router setup expertise, doing it
right can be difficult and risky.
If you really feel the need for additional protection, go with a software
router (or server with built-in equivalent), but I will leave it others to
recommend specifics, as I have a slight conflict of interest. Most soft
routers have more user-friendly setups, and include a few templates for
simple and more complex cases.
I have run my all-Mac small-business net, both with and without soft router
firewall, for several years without incident, but then I am (properly)
considering that hackers look for easier or more rewarding targets...and I
really do keep daily off-net backups.

The Astra 1220S has the worlds worst documentation! I couldn't even get
the software to install using "easy install". I finally installed it one
piece at a time using the "custom install" method.
A message to UMAX was answered after a few days and they said it was due to
a conflict with extensions. Even though I had installed the S/W, I tried
it again with the extensions off and got the same thing. I think the
allocated memory for the installer is not large enough to handle the
installation properly in easy install.
I have no clue as to what Presto and page manager are for. But I do use
the Adobe Photodeluxe.
The Umax S/W gadget what an (ugly interface) does allow you to send files
to the printer which makes your system into a Xerox machine for the price
of the scanner.
As for the slow speed try scanning with the B&W settings or 256 colors (I
can't get the "Web Colors" to work too well.
All In all we are pleased with the machine, but UMAX is doing it self a
great disservice with the documentation.

Hi Ezra
In my experience of sending enclosures, the most reliable way to send
almost anything is encoding Base 64, with no compression. The modem
itself does some compression, and further compression using eg zip or
stuff probably does not speed transmission much, and only leads to extra
problems when the documents arrive.
I've found that Base 64 works best even with Mac users on a network --
possibly because their mail server is a PC.
Most of my clients have Macs on their desks, but only one needs enclosure
BinHex'd. The rest can only read documents encoded Base 64. (Though it
has to be said that many computer users -- Mac and PC -- are so ignorant
and idle that they don't know what enclosures are, how to deal with them
or even find them, and what to do with them .)

In Dan Frake's InformInit, it says under the Microsoft Office 4.2.1 section:

font. The font itself is usually found in the Extensions Folder.
Well, I have the postscript font in the Extensions folder but not any
suitcase in the Fonts folder. On the other hand, I now use Office 98, so I
don't know if that's why the suitcase is missing??
Anyway, I seem to recall having seen that font around for a long time,
maybe even before Office 4.2.1. It always came with MS Word, I believe. I
think it's for making equations in Word. Can anyone correct me?

Subject: (A) Norton and MacOS 8.1 and above
Dear Digest readers,
After reading the Digest since Norton 4.0.3's release and several other
posts on other newsgroups I have some sad news. Norton has yet to fix the
problems it has with MacOS 8.1 and above. HFS+ is the primary culprit,
but I have seen problems with HFS only. My recommendation to anyone with
MacOS 8.1 or higher, is to trash Norton, and only use Disk First Aid. If
you have errors DFA can't fix, then it is time to reformat your hard disk.
Only the Disk First Aid that came with MacOS 8.5.1 works reliably with
systems 8.1 and above. Sorry for having to part the bad news, and while
YMMV, if you suddenly start seeing data corruption from Norton Disk Doctor
or Crash Guard, remove Norton before it erases your hard disk.
MacOS 8.0 can take Norton Disk Doctor of any version, but not 8.1, 8.5,
and 8.5.1.
Norton Anti-Virus on the other hand works without problems on any MacOS
version.
Just a word of caution from someone who lost their entire hard disk due to
Norton's programming errors.

I asked this before in a rather un-informed way and since then I've
investigated it a bit further.
Two loyal Info-Mac people offered suggestions, but I still have no
explanation for what I'm seeing.
On a G3 which is client to a Windows served network there seems to be a
limit to the number of files which will appear in the Open... or Save...
dialogue.
The machine is attempting to access a folder on the server containing
more than 4,000 files.
Using Photoshop 5 the file list starts with a dialogue saying something
like, "There are too many files. Some of them will not be shown" and
then only 682 files show on the list.
Using GraphicConvertor 3.5 I get the same results; 682 files and the same
OK warning.
I even tried using BBEdit to access the same folder and I only got 682
files there too.
When I used Sherlock to see the list it maxed out at 3,800 files due to
limited memory allocation.
This is something either in the network area or a limitation of the Mac
OS to allow applications wider access to a "foreign" network which is
non-HFS (perhaps?).
Can anyone enlighten me about whether I can make Mac Apps see more files
through some arcane but necessary voodoo or point me to technical notes
which explain how and why the limitation happens so we might either gain
better "server" side performance or provide the "right kind" of file
listing to see all those important files. If I'm missing an obvious FAQ
here I'd appreciate hearing that too.
The machine in question is running OS 8.6b4 and has DAVE services on
board as well as both RAM Doubler and Speed Doubler running on it. I can
hear the first chorus of "turn off RAM-D and Speed-D" and you'll get
better files. But I'd rather hear the real reasons this fails.
If this really is an OS or Net limitation then it bears badly on the Mac
in this Win heavy environment.

Has anyone experience of Mac Word 8 attachments sent from Eudora that are
invisible to some MS email systems on the PC? I only noticed this when
upgrading to Office 98, and have had the problem with both Eudora Pro 3
and 4. The attachment is definitelly there, but the PC user is unable to
see it. A workaround seems to be to include more than one attachment!
Anybody know the answer to this? Apologies if it has been answered before
- I have not been reading Info-Mac very regularly.

Gang,
Need the collective wisdom of the InfoMac Digest (Al Bloom, et al) to help
me with the Middle Age Mind Decisson Making Process (got to be an acronym
in there somewhere).
I need a new monitor for work. Sigh! My olde Radius GDM 1950 is
hopelessly out of alignment and the Tech's say they can't get it back into
alignment. Sigh! Here's my what I do:
- Program Manager (re: Project Management Stuff) with too much email
- Use MS Office 98 especially PowerPoint
- Netscape 4.51
- Love to have neat Desktop pictures but don't do graphics such as
PhotoShop, etc.
Monitor is mainly for office work, but, since I'm a paperless type of guy,
I like to see as much as possible on the screen (full page) as my Middle
Age Eyes can see. So, I run 1024 x 768. Thus, I need a quality monitor
and I'm favoring two types of monitors:
- Apple Studio Display. I've seen this LCD run 1024 x768 and I'm
impressed; and,
- New crop of 19" monitors with 18" visible such as Viewsonic's
MD7515 (?)
and the Diamond 900u.
If anyboy has one these puppies or something better, tell me what you think
of it. How did you come to buy it? What do you use it for?
I think the bottom line is I read text - I don't need a DTP monitor 'cause
I don't want to see pixles that make up the text. I gotta stare at this
thing for a good portion of the 10 hour day as I do my paperless thing.
(Ahh, hell, it's really "paper lite", isn't it?!)
BTW, here's what's driving the monitor - a 7600 G3 (300/1/150), 96MB, Ultra
Wide, ATI GA (?) graphics card with both Apple & VGA output. It's been
goosed so many times that it looks like a Hot Rod 64 Chrysler 300. Makes
the PeeCee guys wantabe's.

Subject: Bad 1710AV monitors - The Apple Runaround!
Has someone formed a support group for 1710AV monitors yet!
We have two dead 1710AV monitors in the last month. One belongs to
our lab and it died in March. The other is my own and it died last
week about 15 days after the 90 day warranty expired. It had been
replaced on December 17th for the same problem.
I bought my home one about 2.5 years ago and it never was able to
hold any resolution except the 640 X 480. I opened a case report
with Apple and they told me it was the PB5300 that I had hooked up to
it. In December last year when I hooked it up to a Centris 610 and
found out I had the same problem. I called Apple back and they told
me to bring it in. They found a problem with a card and gave me a
refurbished one. They told me I was lucky I brought it in before the
end of the year as their extended warranty program was ending.
So in March the 1710AV in the lab comes down with the same problem.
I called and they told me the only option was to replace the card for
$$300. I told them that I was aware of the quality problem with
these monitors and I thought that they should repair it. They told
me the only recourse I had was to repair it. So it is in the shop
waiting for new cards.
Last week the 1710AV that they gave me in December died. It will not
come on at all. I took it to Microdisk her at Stanford and they said
the it is a problem with the same card. I called Apple and suggested
that they should repair it since the repair warranty is only a 15
days expired and it is a known problem. They told me too bad. They
did tell me that I could upgrade to a 17 inch Studio display for
$350. I wasn't sure which one it was. Is this the Imac looking
display that sells for about $499? No speakers and it only runs on a
PPC or better. That means I will get $150 for my 1710AV towards a new
monitor.
What is going on with Apple? I have 13 inch monitors in our lab from
1986 that are still going strong. The 1710AV monitors have problems.
I bought this monitor for $1000 and thought it would be my last as I
spend money upgrading CPUs instead.
What recourse do I have? Apple has always stood by their products in
the past. I have endured defective PB5300 and numbers defective hard
drives that Apple has bent over backward to repair. Their service
has always been outstanding. I am really left with a bad feeling on
this issue though.

First thing to try: drag the downloaded file to StuffIt Expander, and see
if it decodes into a usable application file. The reason it opened IE is
because IE screws with your Internet preferences so it becomes the
application of choice for nearly every type of document. Bad IE! Bad, bad
IE!
If Expander doesn't work, your best bet may be to re-download the file
with Fetch or Anarchie instead of IE.

Do you have the latest and greatest hard disk driver software
installed? If not, check VersionTracker for the latest version of Drive
Setup, HDT or whatever you're using.
Have you tried setting Ram Doubler to "File Mapping Only" and observed
the results?
Does the problem still exist when you run with Extensions disabled?
Time for a conflict test?
I've run out of ideas, but I'm sure you'll get a few more suggestions.

fwiw, my daughter has been using an old LC with 10 megs, NN 2.02 and Eudora
Light to surf the net and I concur with everything Ian mentioned. Some
things are slower than molasses in winter but it is usable for surfing.

In my office we have 16 macs, ranging from G3s to a creaky Mac II, on an
ethernet LAN. Our shared files are stored on a performa 6400 which has file
sharing enabled. The problem I have encountered with this setup is that the
server won't allow more than 10 users to connect to it at any one time.
This currently isn't a serious problem, but it may be in the near future
when we add another three computers to the network. For the most part the
system works fine, and I would prefer to avoid the added expense and
complexity of using appleshare ip. Besides, I don't think the currently
available version of asip would run on our older machines.
So, I'm wondering if there is a way to overcome the 10 user login limit
under finder's file sharing without having to set up server software. Is
there is another software solution or a hack available for this?

Strip module called "AppleTalk Switch"? It shows you with one click

If I'm understanding the problem correctly, then it seems to me you have
downloaded the encoded version of the utility. You could try holding the
Option key while you click the download link, and see if that causes it to
place a proper installer on your hard drive. If not, you could save the
whole big encoded mess as a Plain Text file on your hard drive. Then drop
that on StuffIt Expander and see if it turns it into an installer. If not,
try dropping it on YABase64 or other decoder. (For instance, I like Decoder
1.3.7.)

solution exists that involves selecting (or deselecting?) "Unlimited
Downloadable Fonts" in your print dialog window. Then if that doesn't work,
try printing it one page at a time.

Hi Info-mac
I'm preparing a talk on copyright issues and am looking for a small app
called Homer (as in Simpson).
This was a fairly basic program written some years ago by a couple of
Australian school boys - it put a small window on the desktop with Homer's
face in it. The eyes followed the cursor around (I think) and it spoke
Homerisms at random times. The wrath of 20th Century Fox's legal dept came
down upon the perpetrators of this piece of fun and they were aske dto
cease and desist.
It seems that they did indeed do just that as a quick search of the web has
found no trace of it.
I'd much appreciate if anyone out there knows what I'm talking about and
could put me in touch with a copy of the app.

I have ADSL here in Cincinnati and security is not a problem.
Cincinnati Bell outfitted me with a Cisco 675 ADSL modem, which is a NAT so
nobody gets through it unless I set the Cisco up to let them.
Also because IPs are assigned dynamically to my ADSL modem, it's hard to
figure out which computer is whose. Some kind soul has set up a utility and
a web site to let people find out their IP address from the web, but under
normal circumstances it would be very hard to get hacked...

that keeps the maximum size of the server from exceeding 2Gigbyte.
Depending on the server (NT, UNIX, Novell,...) you either get a 2 Gig

disk space.

Subject: Navigation Services as an extension?
Hi again.
I read in a document that came with the latest version of DeafultFolder
that sometime in recent history, somebody (probably Apple) wrote and
distributed something called the Navigation Services 1.0 extension.
Evidently, as was inferred in the doc, this init was for both 68K Macs
and PPCs not running OS8.5, to enable them to use stuff like Favorites
and the new Open and Save dialog box dingles.
If anyone knows where this extension can be found, or has a copy to send,
please let me know.

I read of okey dokey pro in tidbits talk a couple of days ago. Someone
said that it was a control panel he could not live without. So I downloaded
it. Apparently it solves the modal dialog problem.
What is a modal dialog. Do I and my loved ones have them? I am afraid to
try things out by doing them in general, since I might get a lot more done
than I bargained for. So, what does this do that is so praiseworthy. By the
way, does this work with 8.1 and 8.5.1?

No offense Daly, but several people on the Palm usenet groups HAVE
reported success synching Palms to their IrDA devices such as iMacs AND
PowerBooks that use IrDA. They report flawless hot synchs. I haven't
heard Palm officially say this is not possible, either. The files to put
in your System Folder to do the IrDA hotsynch are in the new 2.1 Palm
Desktop download package. I don't have either an iMac nor a PowerBook
that supports IrDA myself, so I can't testify to how well all this works
first hand. However, when one says that they didn't have success
performing a particular action it doesn't mean that it is impossible or
unachievable!
Also, re: the error message that accompanies quitting the 2.1 version of
Palm Desktop would *not* be due to an extension conflict (at least, not
in my case). Reason being that Palm Desktop is an application unto
itself and I run it when not synching with the Instant Palm Desktop, Hot
Synch Memory, and other Palm necessities *not loaded*. Using Palm
Desktop by itself doesn't require the Palm extensions. They are only
necessary to hotsynch.
Finally, as for keeping a separate set for Palm goodies in your
Extensions Manager, it really is the way to go for most people. Hot
Synch Memory is still on the "buggy" side and in the prior versions of
the Palm software for the Mac, the Serial Port Arbitrator was constantly
"polling" the serial ports and would totally interfere with any printing
or use of Appletalk. And in my case, Instant Palm Desktop still conflicts
with 3rd party extensions, so I have the Palm set in the Extensions
Manager load with only the Mac OS 8.5 Base extensions.

HotSync works fine between the IrDA port on my PowerBook G3/300 and
my Palm V. It can be a little touchy if you're moving the Palm
around while it's hot-synching, but I haven't seen any other problems
in the few days I've owned the Palm V. I just dragged the
Palm-supplied extensions into the extensions folder, rebooted, and
then set the HotSync Manager and the Palm V to both use their IrDA
ports.

Sorry, guys, tried to search the digests, but couldn't come up with any
info on this (probably my own ineptitude rather than lack of info
Is there a utility, similar to Threshold for earlier Powerbooks, which
allows you to custom-set the battery-level at which your Powerbook will go
to sleep?
Threshold also showed the voltage.
My PB1400 battery is giving me only an hour after using Battery
Reconditioner (which came with the PB), and a lot less if the CD-ROM is in
the expansion bay (even if it is empty!).
Any ideas would be very much welcome.

Since SWB service probably forbids you to run a WebServer at home, I
believe that any hardware-based router/firewall is almost certainly an
overkill. Apple file sharing (either plain or IP-Share) is much more
robust than that of Windows, assuming that you use good password
disciplines and *never* allow "Guest Access" when you set up sharing.
Also, unless you have access to genuine router setup expertise, doing it
right can be difficult and risky.
If you really feel the need for additional protection, go with a software
router (or server with built-in equivalent), but I will leave it others to
recommend specifics, as I have a slight conflict of interest. Most soft
routers have more user-friendly setups, and include a few templates for
simple and more complex cases.
I have run my all-Mac small-business net, both with and without soft router
firewall, for several years without incident, but then I am (properly)
considering that hackers look for easier or more rewarding targets...and I
really do keep daily off-net backups.

The Astra 1220S has the worlds worst documentation! I couldn't even get
the software to install using "easy install". I finally installed it one
piece at a time using the "custom install" method.
A message to UMAX was answered after a few days and they said it was due to
a conflict with extensions. Even though I had installed the S/W, I tried
it again with the extensions off and got the same thing. I think the
allocated memory for the installer is not large enough to handle the
installation properly in easy install.
I have no clue as to what Presto and page manager are for. But I do use
the Adobe Photodeluxe.
The Umax S/W gadget what an (ugly interface) does allow you to send files
to the printer which makes your system into a Xerox machine for the price
of the scanner.
As for the slow speed try scanning with the B&W settings or 256 colors (I
can't get the "Web Colors" to work too well.
All In all we are pleased with the machine, but UMAX is doing it self a
great disservice with the documentation.
