I like and use a small program called "MemorizeIt!" that I bought from the
author at a computer show.

It lets you easily make your own cards, and decorate them if you wish,
format them, import graphics and sounds for the cards, reverse the cards so
"front" is "back" (for practicing answers as questions), it shuffles the
cards into a different order, it can keep track of your performance and
test you on the cards you miss more often, and so on. I think it's perfect
for the purpose. My daughter uses it often for spelling, history, language,
and other tests involving memorization.

Dear Digest readers,
I had reported in a previous post that my Microsoft Excel 5.0 was making
some cells boldface while others were normal after hitting the command-S to
save my spreadsheet. Today I found the same was happening to some but not
all words within my WriteNow document after hitting command-S. Printing
out the document revealed no boldface words, so it appeared to be appearance
manager or QuickDraw related. I upgraded to the latest FinderPop, version
1.7.5, and the problem looks like it went away. Looks like the earlier
version 1.7.2 didn't talk to the appearance manager correctly.
Hopefully that is all it was.

With System 8.1 and Netscape 4.0.6 & 4.5 you could open up a URL in a new
window (as well as some other useful options) by holding down the option
key when clicking on the URL with the mouse. The option seems to have
disappeared when I upgraded our macs (1400c & G3) to 8.5. Is this a
'feature' of 8.5 or a bug in netscape?

Subject: (Q) PM6100/DOS Problem
I just received a PowerMac 6100 DOS compatible (486 card inside) and I'd
like to get in on my network (Ethernet) using TCP/IP. I dl'd the lates DOS
compatibility software from Apple (version 1.6.4 and seem to have
everything installed correctly, but I can't make a connection via TCP. I
get various error messages, so I'd like to start working this out with a
few basic questions.
Q1: Apple says the card works with System 7.5.3, I have 7.6.1,
am I OK or do I need to degrade to 7.5.3? I have DOS and Windows 3.1
installed and they seem to be working fine (well, fine for Windows
anyway).
Q2: I know that to use TCP/IP on the "other" side, I need to switch the
Mac to AppleTalk since I can't have both sides using TCP at the same time.
So, can I do this using just the AppleTalk control panel, just the TCP/IP
control panel, or do I need to use both?
Q3: sometimes I can't switch back from Windows to the Mac side, usually I
can, but just sometimes...ideas?

Dear Digest readers,
Have the top three Mac virus detection utility programs merged? I went to
Virex's home page at Dr. Solomon and they say to download the beta version
of Virex from McAfee's web site

So is now Datawatch part of Dr. Solomon, Part of McAfee, Part of Network
Associates?
Then how come does Network Associate's web page show version 3.0 of its
Viruscan, where it is linked up to McAfee's listing of Virex?
I am totally confused. Also the beta version 5.9 available from that page
was released last July. I thought I remember reading in the Digest someone
has gotten a release version newer than August. But it isn't available at
PC/MacConnection, MacZone, or MacWareHouse so I wonder where they got it.
I have what appears to be a virus with Microsoft Excel 5.0. I save my file
using command-S, while I am in the lower frame of a split frame spreadsheet,
and the upper frame goes boldface. What could be causing this? How do I
stop it?
Don't tell me to upgrade to Excel 98, as I can't afford it.

Subject: (Q)Registering QuickTime Pro with MacOS 8.5
Dear Digest readers,
I don't have time for this nonsense. Either Apple allows one to register
the QuickTime Pro on the MacOS 8.5 or it doesn't. I don't want to go to a
web page to register it, as that is too insecure. I tried calling the
Apple Support Card number and all I get is an endless computerized phone
system jungle, and if I do get through to the support line, I am on hold
for longer than 15 minutes, at which point I hang up. My time is precious.
So who do I write to get a registration code? I am not interesting in
putting my name on a mailing list either. Is there an 800 number to get
the code, and register my MacOS 8.5 software without waiting on hold?
Apple needs to be more sensitive to the limited time of its consumers.

I've used OS 8.1 on my PowerCenter 150 MT for some time now. Works
flawlessly. I then upgraded with a G3 card and all still runs fine. Have
no info on 8.5, but I expect it will work with no problems as well. The
internal chip is the same as Apple's machines. Rumors I've heard are that
OS X will detect clones and not work with them, but until then I think
we're both fine. I believe the "we make no guarantee" claim is for legal
reasons, ie "your mileage may vary".

Subject: [Q] G3/266 and SCSI devices
Hello Mac fans,
I want to buy a Powermac G3/266, but I have some older SCIS devices
(between 7 and 3 years old) that I would like to hook up. Is that possible?
If so, do I need SCSI controller card that plugs into a PCI slot or are
there other solutions? Most important is that I can use my Panasonic
LF-1000 MO drive which has a funny narrow SCSI plug. Will that be a problem?
Can I hook up a modem and printer simultaneously to the G3/266, as well?

I was 90% lucky because I could buy a G3 powerbook. The remaining 10% is
that I work in France but I hate the french keyboard. So I odered a
PowerBook with the US keyboard and US system. The catalog configuration
includes a modem in the Mac, but Apple France for meaningless regulation
reasons can not deliver an US modem (which of course is identical to the
one in the frenchy version but did not go through the paperwork)
So I knew I will end up with a modemless Mac. (.... nota bene the price
was the same...) but I thought I can buy later the modem and re-install
it.
Now comes the catch22. Our local apple dealer states that it is not
possible to add an original modem! The hole is there on side of the mac. I
know that I could go for a PCMCIA modem card but I would hate to lose any
expansion slot when the place is there for a built in modem.
The question is : Is it really impossible to reinstall an original modem
in a PowerBook? How do than they repaire it when an existing one breaks
down?
Does anybody have any experience in changing/installing a modem?
After all it must exist as a spare part? Or is it really soldered on the
motherboard or somthing like that?

I recently bought an Epson 600 printer for my PowerBook G3. I use
Textures all the time. When I printed a document, the "not-equals" (\ne
or \not =) prints out as an equals sign. A few experiments tells me that
the only \not that prints out is \not\in; anything else prints out without
the diagonal slash.

CM/PS screen fonts and Postscript fonts downloaded from the AMS
Any suggestions?

earlier date, they do not have the features of the clickable trackpad.

Has anyone suggested that you trash the finder preferences file in the
system preference folder and reboot? Finder will make a new preferences
file when your desktop appears, then empty the trash. Then try trashing
the folder you couldn't. Finder preferences get corrupted and odd things
happen, like generic icons, maybe the trash hell folder. Give it a try.
Another thing is that you could download and use is MicroMat's freeware
TechTool 1.1.7 (the latest version, prior to OS 8.5), to delete your
desktop entirely. This makes finder build a totally new one. Then you'd
probably be able to trash and empty that hell folder. Other features are
built into TechTool, like having it zap the pram, saving the info first,
then being able to restore the settings, so you don't have to spend much
time in control panels, resetting the map which is important to your
communications software use, time & date, windows scroll bar and
selection highlight colors, turn off the trash dialog, and one or two
others I may have missed. TechTool also gives complete reading of
everything about the Mac it's installed on, or a floppy version of it is
inserted into, including date manufactures, how much time it has been run
and other stuff. Great for checking out pre-owned Macs you may be
considering purchasing.
I started with TechTool freeware, but moved on to the full featured
TechTool Pro 1, then 2.0 (2.0.4 is the latest). I Also use a Norton DD
start up floppy I made, for problem occasions. Though I occasionally run
TechTool Pro for extensive checks, I find Norton DD convenient to quickly
find & fix problems & run it again until "no problems found" shows.
At one time Norton Utilities would also delete the desktop entirely and
then rebuild a new one. Accessible from it's top menu bar. I use TTP to
check desktop integrity and the rebuilds, so I haven't checked to see if
that still exists in NU 3.5.3, but will soon.
No, I don't work for MicroMat. Just found Techtool in all it's versions
to be a nifty utility to have on hand to help resolve various problems on
the fly. A totally new desktop rebuild often resolves other odd problems
you may be having, besides the untrashable folder.
BTW: The new version Conflict Catcher 8 also includes total desktop
rebuild capabilities.

And here's another suggestion: Use Apple's Disk First Aid to repair the
disk - you may get 'leaf node' problems or 'directory valence' errors.
Immediately after the repair, try to trash the folder.
I got it with a PWB1400/8.1/HFS+.

To change the default font and page setup in ClarisWorks merely make a
page the way you want with the font and margins then save the file as
stationary with the name ClarisWorks WP Options. It must be exactly
that name to work. To change settings for the other modules substitute
initials DR, PT, DB for the WP in the name. The old settings can be
found at the very bottom of the new document choices menu.

))The MacLinkPlus 9.0 budled with MacOS 8 or 7.6 will convert them all as
a batch (don't try to do them all at once, but - say- 20 by 20).
The one little problem is that any file named, say, "Pippo" creates a
converted file called "Pippo (converted)"... "(" and ")" are allowed in
dos, but this may be annoying...

Use MacLink Plus. It has a converter for Word97 (at least, my
version 9.7 has). Just create a document-converter file and
drag-drop all files you need to have converted. MacLink Plus
comes with system software since about OS version 7.5 or so.

Folks, at the risk of becoming flame-bait, would appreciate thoughts on
connecting a Windoze laptop to an Ethertalk network.
Situation: Wonderful Wife (WW) "inherited" an IBM Thinkpad 720 which she
uses to maintain membership databases for her lacemakers' group. T'pad
is running Win 3.11 on a 486 platform. WW maintains a membership roster
in Excel. Desktop work is done on a Umax J700/180, but the Stinkpad
allows her to take the roster to meetings, update information on the
fly, and keep the membership database current. WW likes this layout,
except she is sneakernetting files via floppy between the Stinkpad and
the J700 at this point. This has two drawbacks: (1) floppies can be
unreliable, and (2) she has no direct access to our Personal LaserWriter
NT to print files.
Our in-house Mac network runs on 10BT Ethernet (Ethertalk). Only the *
zone. 5-port hub has a spare port. I'd like to put the Stinkpad on the
Ethernet to make her life easier. So these questions:
(1) Looks like Personal MacLAN Connect is the tool to make the laptop
talk Ethertalk. Any experience? Work as advertised?
(2) Anyone used a Thinkpad on an Ethertalk network? Lessons learned?
(3) Anyone used Win 3.11 on Ethertalk?
(4) Recommendations for low[er]-priced PCMCIA cards for this setup?
(Don't need a modem, just the NIC.)
(5) Other ideas?
Thanks again for thoughts and considered responses. Before you say, "buy
a Powerbook," I'd mention that there is no better way to make sure the
ones you love keep buying Macs than have them use a Windoze PC now and then.

Multimedia Flashcards Series which sells in UK for around GBP22 - I've
played with putting my own together to teach my children Welsh and

Hello Andy, thank you for summarying those suggestions you got from
info-mac.
I use a powerbook 2400c with 1.3 gig IDE drive. I had this exact problem
during the six months use of HFS+ format early this year. Exactly! I
copied the preference folder from an old system folder, and after moving
all the necessary files, the folder couldn't be delete, error -127. I
also tried a lot of methods you mentioned but without any luck. At that
time, March to August, there is still no reliable tools to fix HFS+
format, and new TechTool Pro 2.0 something couldn't detect any problem on
this partition. I knew I had a problem with this HFS+ partition, but
otherwise the machine works fine.
After a long wait for a new tool, a fetal crash occurred when I tried to
fix the HFS+ using MacMedic. MacMedic couldn't finish the fixing, then
TechTool also freezed. I even tried Norton Utilities 4.0 beta, but
things got even worse, I lost all files in the whole drive, including
both HFS+ and HFS! The drive becomes unmountable and a technical call
led me to convince that the master directory/block of the HD is damaged.
That was the same day when the shareware Data-rescue 2.02 was posted, but
it also didn't help. I have to sent my powerbook out for data recovery
which cost me a fortune, but still failed to recover most files in HFS+!
This is the biggest disaster I have ever had since I shifted to Mac in
1990.
The lesson: I still don't know what's wrong with the HFS+ partition, but
seems that the old preference folder must be lethal. Second, even though
I have Norton utilities 4.01, I am still frightened to use HFS+. Third,
I was again reminded to backup my files EVERYDAY, sadly it came from a
big lost!
I really wish you can solve this mystery. But even you can't, or before
you try anything, backup whatever you think is important. If I were in
your position now, the best thing to do is to reinitialize the HD and
start over. It's really not worth to lose your data.
I hope you can post the results of your trials and I thank you for
sharing theses results with us.

No. Code written for the '030 will work on the '040, but necessarily the
other way around. The OS uses optimized assembler code for tasks that
have to be fast, and those things don't necessarily work.
That is not the big problem, however. The big problem is that a computer
is so much more than just a processor. The main problem here (and the
reason OS X will not officially support 604-based machines) is the memory
controller. It must be addressed directly occasionally, and many '030
motherboards use old memory controllers that are not supported in newer
OSes.
8.1 is a long stretch even for '040s - many functions are limited, like
HFS+ and the contextual menus. It simply cannot be done with any hint of
stability.

Does anyone know whether VocalTec's Internet Phone v.3.5 can work witk a
PowerMac 6500/225? VocalTec say the Performa 6000 series are not suitable,
but will not be more specific. If the 6500/225 is not suitable, is this
because of the accursed internal Apple Express Modem? If so, can one
overcome the problem by pulling the "Express" and using a conventional
external modem?
I know VocalTec should provide the answer, but their support is automated
and cannot answer a specific question.

I tried turning off Apple menu items (items recently used portion), without
success. And I clocked the file sharing total startup time at about half
an hour!! This is killing my efforts to keep things synchd betw my macs,
always essential when you have a portable.
To clarify, I don't seem to have a problem with crashes (at least not that
I can connect with file sharing), et al. Running OS 8.1 that came with the
pbk. 192 megs memory (1st time I have maxed memory since putting 640K on
my old PC, and this one cost less).

My new pbk is showing an aggravating problem. Every time I bring it out of
sleep & connect it to our ethernet nwk, I find that file sharing has to
restart itself b4 the other macs will see it in their choosers. And it
seems to take forever for FShg to restart, seems like 15 mins or more! The
unpartitioned 4 gig HD (hfs+) is a little over half full, due mainly to
"backing up" files from other macs on the nwk.
Has anyone else seen this sort of problem? I would appreciate any
help/suggestions you could give.

Subject: MacTCP invisible
On 1 November I found I couldn't dial my ISP because MacTCP had
disappeared. After fiddling around and trying everything, I discovered that
it was still there but had become invisible (even to the system). I could
get it to reappear by zapping the PRAM but doing this turned off 32 bit
addressing, without which my usable RAM is reduced to only about 4Mb. The
computer has to be restarted to bring 32 bit addressing back on, and MacTCP
disappears again! Catch 22. With only 4Mb I can use Eudora Light but
can't access the WWW because Netscape needs more memory.
I have tried trashing MacTCP DNR and MacTCP Prep, and reinstalled MacTCP
from CD. I have been using Conflict Catcher but it hasn't done much (the
testing process doesn't seem to get anywhere - it identified AppleTalk as
a problem and I trashed that but the problem persists). Disinfectant, Disk
First Aid and TechTool say there's nothing wrong, but Speed Disk gives the
message "there seems to be something wrong" and to use Norton Disk Doctor
to find out the exact problem. I don't have NDD.
On 31 October the last few applications I had been using were Claris
HomePage, JPG Viewer, and Eudora Light.
I am an out-of-town, home user with an LC575, system 7.5.3, 32Mb RAM. Any
assistance or suggestions would be most welcome.

I have an apple multiscan 15in hooked up to a 7600/ppc and last friday I
came in to work and the screen was black, except for a thin white line down
the center, vertically. I tried another monitor and it worked, and the
broken monitor wouldn't work on another machine so I got ready to send it
out for repair. While the powers that be worked on the red tape. The other
monitor worked fine for 3 days on the 7600, then yesterday i came in and
turned it on and it won't start up. The computer does, but not the monitor.
it cycles the power on light between green and orange. I tried it on the
machine it came from and it still does not work. At this point I am
assuming that the problem was originally in the PPC, but what would be
causing it to blow monitors. I also need to figure out what is wrong with
the monitors, to determine if it is worth fixing them. We are a research
lab, and money is very tight, so the cheapest I can do this the better. I
put a radius 17in pivot grayscale on the working computer, but does anyone
know of a PPC compatable extension that will allow it to be used in
landscape mode. The drivers that came with it, updated just before radius
sold off their monitor business, crash the computer. I checked their
website, but there wasn't anything useful there. I appreciate any help on
any of these questions in advance.

I am mostly positive about the changes in system 8.5. Once thing I have
noticed though is that the colors on my 1400C monitor are not accurate at
all. I really do not care if Lavendar is actually Purple but it generally
seems that my monitor settings are pale. I have my desktop set to a
yellowish background (The spaceship scene) and all my yellows, pinks and
greens seem washed out. For example with Eudora I could not even see when
text was highlighted on a white page. The default Lavandar was so washed
out that it looked the same as green in the color sceme.
The monitor settings does not contain a 1400c. Which one there is the best
fit for my mac? I made my own settings which I think are a little better.
Does any one have a better one or suggestions?

The screen is too bright (or actually, light) on my PowerBook 5300=
(grayscale). Even the lowest brightness and highest contrast, there is a=
shortage of gray levels--things that are grayed are almost invisible. No=
adjustment of the controls seems to help. If anything it is worse when=
running on battery power, but I'm not sure if it makes any difference or=
I'm imagining it. Anyone know a way of adjusting this?
(I'm running OS8 with Monitors & Sound 1.3, but it was the same story with=
System 7.5.5.) I have it set on 16 levels of gray. If I put it on 4 levels=
then some grays are just whited out.

I didn't upgrade to 8.0 or 8.1, but I've been using 8.5 on my PowerCenter
Pro 180 for over a week now and am pretty much ready to declare it a total
success. Much faster and more stable than 7.6.1 was. The only caveat: do a
very, *very* clean install (back up the hard disk, reformat it using Drive
Setup on the 8.5 CD, install, restore). And don't expect Apple's CD-ROM
driver to work; keep your old driver.

I have been running 8.5 since early betas without a problem. Just make
sure you have the latest Hard Disk Toolkit drivers from FWB.

Yes i am running 8.1 and now 8.5 and have a powercomputing 604/120... i
think the machine is over three years old now and running strong accept for
a L2 cache that doesnt seem to be working best
I will be upgrading it with a g3 card soon (which has the backside cache to
replace my level2) I have also seen another 604/120 running at a clocked
speed of 300 mhz after the g3 upgrade!... Apparently with the 604's it is
as simple as pulling one cpu card out and slotting the other in!
your worries of it not being able to run 8.1 or 8.5 are not a problem i
believe(although dont quote me totally)... i have been running 8.1 for some
time and whilst i have had a single re-occuring problem i have resigned to
the fact that is only due to the L2 cache needing replacement. I also have
other power friends that run 8.1!
I was worried, like you, when i wanted to insatll 8.0 or upgrade the
machine to a G3 and upon lots of consultation with technicians... the word
is that the powercomputers are almost identical in arcitecure and infact
they are a little more versatile and flexible!
I say speak to a local technician... see what he says and upon the ok ...
go for it. I have noticed a speed increase again and not had a crash yet
and thats after running claris homepage, photoshop, claris works, graphic
converter, bb edit and Netscape all at once (lot a ram!)

Greetings. I need to create postscript files from a bunch of MS Word
documents to run them through Acrobat.
I don't have access to a LaserWriter on this system.
I select the LaserWriter 8 driver in the chooser, and specify print to
file. The document prints, but after printing I get a dialog saying
"Document xxx has been moved to the trash, because there is no desktop
printer".
I can't create a desktop printer, because there is no laserWriter to select
in the chooser.
So, how can I create a PostScript file???

Subject: PrintMonitor default memory allocation of any use?
Is it just my overburdened configuration, or should some of the 'suggested'
memory allocations I've seen be increased?
Case in point: printing.
I've had to increase the memory used by Apple's PrintMonitor for my
StyleWriter, by the HP PrintMonitor which drives my DeskJet 870Cxi, and of
the Epson Monitor2 which drives my Epson Stylus 600. Each of these
applications/extensions are preset at numbers like 200K. This proves
hopelessly inadequate to get my WWW pages from Navigator, or a moderately
styled Word document out my printer.
I now typically push these allocations out to at least 1500K.
So is there something I'm doing wrong, or are these
manufacturers/developers just head-in-the-sand out of touch with the real
world?
Using PowerBook 1400C/48MB/OS 8.1/HFS+/Ram Doubler 8.01.

Subject: System Crashed
Hi Folks, I recently update from OS7.5.5 to OS 7.6. I wasn't having any
problems with OS 7.5.5 esp since I installed more RAM, but since I put in
7.6, I am having frequent crashes. This happened once before and I had a
lot of crashes so I reinstalled 7.5.5 and things were going OK.
My understanding to upgrade to OS 8 that I have to have 7.6 installed.
My biggest problem are with crashes with email (I use Eudora Pro and trying
to get into Netscape Gold 3). I was getting an Error 28 with Eudora Pro so
I gave it more RAM and Error 1 with Netscape, also alloted more memory. Now
I don't get those messages but still crash.
This morning I'm making connections to my server and my modem is connected
but when trying to check out mail or send mail I'm getting error message
"Lost connection to Server" but my modem is connected.
Any ideas?

Subject: TCP/IP: Internet Setup Assistant generates broken TCP/IP
For MacOS8.5: Installing or setting up TCP/IP network non-dialup
connections.
Upon installing MacOS8.5 followed by running the Internet Setup Assistant my
PowerCenter Pro 180
could no longer communicate with my Ascend Pipeline P75 ISDN router.
The noticeable symptoms were a complaint that the router's ethernet hardware
address was
currently using all IP addresses in my class C network. It seemed likely
that the netmask
stored in the TCP/IP Preferences file was not correct. I attempted to re-run
the setup
application and tried changes directly in the TCP/IP control panel to no
avail.
To work-around this I moved my TCP/IP Preferences file from the previous
system folder gen-ed
from System 8.1. This has worked satisfactorily. However, I consider this a
very serious
flaw that should be corrected immediately.
Additionally, I have not been able to modify or add additional Internet
profiles as one
could using System 8.1's Internet Utilities. In this area Apple seems to
have delivered
some apps without thorough testing and QA.
Finally, I have discovered that at this release of MacOS a tried and true
ahead of its time
application; VERSATERM PRO no longer functions. It's functionality still
manages to be on
par with Outlook Express, Claris Mail, etc. plus providing standard telnet,
ftp, plus
servers! This is indeed a sad day as this app has worked like a charm
through all of
System 7 and on the old A/UX system up to this point.

Hello,
I have to convince Wordperfect that its default language is not
english but italian.
Of course I have these italian-specific files:
Ortografia (ITA)
Sillabazione (ITA)
Sinonimi (ITA)
WPCC20IT (an utility transformed it into "Sillabazione (ITA)")
I've tried to use it with a US System; no result.
with an italian localized System; no result.
Also with the french, the same problem...
I need at least that when I choose "Check Spelling", WP
remember to use the italian dictionary...

Subject: Zip Plus FREEZING SCSI chain IOMEGA WILL REPLACE ZIP PLUS
Yes, There is a problem with a Zip Plus when chained. But, as I said
before, this problem did not exist with my older machine and I suspect the
slowness of the Iomega cable.
I called the 888 4 Iomega and after MANY TRY was able to speak to a
technician. The technician told me that the Zip Plus must not be chained. I
told her that in my Zip Plus documentation book there are no mention of
that and also, that there are TWO SCSI plugs at the back of the Zip Plus.
The documentation clealy indicates that the Zip Plus was made to be
plugged. There is a switch to give it either #5 or #6.
So, after half an hour waiting and discussing on the 888 line, I was
switched to someone who told me they will replace the Zip Plus with a
standard Macintosh Zip drive and SIX ZIP DISKS. I was given a number in
Toronto and the person answered after one ring. He was really kind and
handled my problem rapidly. I am waiting for my new Zip any day.
So, thanks to all of those who helped me about this problem and keep this
memo in case you have problems with you SCSI PLUS.
