Subject: [Q] Some Questions about MacLink Plus

Since Claris does not appear to be updating and improving its XTND
translator technology, I am strongly considering buying the translators
from DataViz, MacLink Plus. I'm wondering...

a) How fast do the MacLink translators work, esp. on large Word docu-
ments? I'm a non-Word user and this will be one of my most common uses
for MacLink if I get it. I remember using the MS Word XTND translator
from within MacWrite Pro, and if the Word document was larger than 5-6
pages, it was S-L-O-W. One academic thesis of about 70 pages took so
long I went to supper and came back and it was still chewing away at it.
(this on a 7100 with plenty of RAM assigned). It was considerably
faster to launch SoftWindows, launch Word 6 for Windows (the only Word
I own) and then open the Word 5 for Mac document with it and let it do
the translating, then save it as plain text. I hope MacLink is much
faster.

(b) An interface question -- do MacLink translators work within an app's
Open dialog box (i.e., you can open a foreign document and MacLink will
peek under the hood to see what kind of document it actually is and then
translate it for the host app)? Does it give you an Open As option
(the way Photoshop does) in case you have to override the software's
guesses? (I know you can drag the foreign document onto the specific
translator if you want to force the issue). Do the meaningful formats
get added to the pop-down list in Save As dialog boxes of apps? All the
descriptions of MacLink I read assume the user will depend on Easy Open
but I'm more likely to launch the intended host app first and then open
the foreign document from within it.

There is such a driver at your favorite Info-Mac mirror:
/info-mac/_Configuration/serial-mouse-driver-101.hqx

I dont'know whether it will work with MacOS 8, however. You'll have to
solder a cable adapter; a description is included with the file.

Good luck!

I have a question regarding the configuration of Mac TCP and Eudora when
using an Internet provider which just added a second Domain Name Server
number to the one they already had. As I am the only Mac user using the
services of this provider (the only provider in town !), they can not help
me ...

Do I just need to add a line in Mac TCP with the same name and the new DNS
IP number and check then the option "DNS load balancing" in Eudora light
3.1 preferences or is there anything else to do ?

For your information, my TCP control panel (right side of the second
window) is actually configured like this:

DOMAIN IP ADDRESS DEFAULT
mail.infocenter.com.br 200.246.49.3 x

. 192.135.191.1

Subject: A 7 slot PCI expansion board for the PB3400?

Hi!

I would appreciate receiving any comments you might have concerning a
product by a San Diego, CA company named MAGMA (Mesa Ride Technologies,
Inc.).
It is a PB3400 PCI Expansion System, allowing to have 7 slots for PCI
boards connected to the PB3400.
Since I am envisaging to purchase a PB3400 to use it in mobile multimedia
presentations and this requires being able to have some kind of video board
(genre Radius VideoVision) to show full-screen good quality video, I have
been looking for solutions to the problem of the PB3400 not being able to
accomodate such boards.
In tempo: the multimedia show I present is about Fine Art paintings, hence
the requirement for good and faithful color.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hello,

I have a set of Yamaha YST-M10 external speakers (powered, and shielded)
that have been operating trouble free for about a year. Then without
warning the otehr day, they began to emit a buzzing sound similar to
feedback; which pretty much renders them useless.

I was wondering if anyone has encountered this problem before, and if

Sys 7.0 will (using around 1.1MB if you prune carefully. The IIsi came

Hmmm, in my recollection, the silver layers are placed such that an
ohmic contact between them is not possible. I believe the mechanism is
capacitive and as a result, I do not believe removing tarnish would have
any significant effect.

FWIW, the last time I cleaned my Duo 230 keyboard I just gently washed
the mylar sheets and rubber membrane under a gently flowing tap and
gently dried with them absorbent paper towels.

I was rewarded with a perfectly operating keyboard.

See http://www.cris.com/~jbook/internal.html#keys for another detailed
procedure.

One thing you could try would be to download the Silverling Lite driver
from Syquest's home page, drop it into your control panels folder, and
try to mount the cartridge by clicking on the Mount button. However, I
doubt that this will work. My EZ135 all of a sudden also refused to
mount any cartridges. Syquest technical support gave me an RMA number
to return the drive, and they fixed it under warranty. (The warranty
period is two years.) Turnaround time was quick, and you may find a
surprise or two in the box along with your repaired drive!

Dear moderators,

Recently, the new iChat pager 1.0 application was submitted to the
archives in both 68K and PPC versions. Unfortunately these files are
switched around! I found this out after deciding to download the PPC
version to check it out (as I like to do often), only to have the 68K

Oh well, no harm done. I'm sure that will be an easy one to fix up! :-)

While I am talking about ichat pager, if anyone is slightly interested in
this genre of application, download it and give it a try, it's not bad!

Subject: installing sys. 7.6.1 on a powerbook

Collective wisdom:

Our tech desk (an informal group of two) is attempting to upgrade the token
mac to system 7.6.1. I believe it is a PB 180 or 230 ( I can never
remember these things). Original system 7.1; upgraded to 7.5; 20 some some
megs of RAM. Following is the result of the upgrade attempt:
------------------
Bad News...I get the powerbook home, hook it up, re-initialized the hard
drive, and attempt to install 7.6...no go, so I try again with 7.5.x, still
no go. I try to run Norton Utilities and it locks up when attempting to
check for bad blocks. It will mount the hard drive just fine, but is not
reading from the drive. Initially, I was concerned that I may have shocked
the drive during the trip home, but it started up fine, was able to SCSI,
and the Zip is fine as well. What gives?
----------------------------
The PB has no CD, so he is suing the scsi/zip drive to get in. Any suggestions?

Did you upgrade to 7.6 over your existing system?

You might want to throw away the MacTCP DNR (control panel) and the MacTCP
Prep file. They could have become corrupted.

Have you tried trashing the original FreePPP and then re installing it? I
know of several people who use the same combination of software regularly
without a hitch.

Hi all,

Again, thank you for your replies.

____________________________

Word: Creating Page X of Y Numbering Scheme
ID: Q77948
======================================================================

-------------------------------------------------------------------
The information in this article applies to:

- Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, versions 5.0, 5.1
-------------------------------------------------------------------

SUMMARY
=======

When you run Microsoft Word for the Macintosh with System 7.0 or
later, you can create a header or footer with a "Page of
" entry.

This functionality has changed in Word version 6.0 for the Macintosh.

MORE INFORMATION
================

Method 1:
---------

Note: This procedure does not work unless you are running Word with
Apple's System 7.0 or later.

To create this type of page numbering, use the following steps:

1. Press the COMMAND+END or COMMAND+Keypad 3 key combination to place
the insertion point at the very end of the document.

2. From the Edit menu, choose Glossary.

3. Select the page number glossary entry.

4. Click the Insert button.

5. Select the glossary entry you entered.

6. From the Edit menu, choose Copy.

7. From the Format menu, choose Character.

8. Select the Hidden Text check box, and click the OK button.

9. From the View menu, choose Header or Footer.

10. Type "Page " (without the quotation marks). Notice that a space
follows the word.

11. Click the page number icon (the farthest left icon).

12. Type " of ". Note the spaces on both sides of the word "of."

13. From the Edit menu, choose Paste Special.

14. From the Paste list, choose Picture.

15. Click the Paste Link button.

Method 2:
---------

This procedure places a page number at the end of the document and
formats it as hidden. When you use the Copy and Paste Special commands
to bring a graphic into the header, it creates a link to that page
number.

Note: With this procedure, the page number updates only when the
document is open AND the document is in normal view. If pages are
added, the number in the header will not update until the document is
closed and reopened in normal view.

The following is a second method to update the number in the page
number in the header:

1. Select the page number in the header.

2. From the Edit menu, choose Link Options.

3. Select the Manually option button and click the Update button.

4. If necessary, click the Automatically button to establish automatic
updating of other links in the document.
