Preview won't open a JPEG file

Preview won't open a JPEG file

When my daughter sends pictures attached to her e-mail
Preview does not recognize the file and won't open it.
Any ideas?

If you double click the file, does it do nothing and leave you in the Finder? Or does it automagically open Preview, and then you get an error in Preview?
I am now telling the computer exactly what it can do.

Then it's getting corrupted at some point between when it was created and when you are opening it. Try dragging the file over the Safari icon in your dock and see if Safari can display it correctly.
