Subject: [*] File-Tracker-15; a file/folder watching utility
File Tracker v1.5 is a major upgrade to File Tracker v1.0
and is reccomended to all users. This package should REPLACE the
older v1.0 package on archives. The upgrade is free to
registered users; write to the author for more information.
File Tracker is a utility package that "Watches" files or
folders on your hard drive, or on other people's hard drives
over a network. File Tracker is unique in that it can detect
exactly what happened when a watched folder or file changes.
It can detect seperately, for example, files arriving in a
folder or files being renamed, and perform actions on the
files involved. A wide range of events are recognized.
File Tracker offers a large library of built-in, pre-fab
actions that it can take in response to events, but also ties
in closely with AppleScript so you can write your own responses.
Example scripts and a few scripting additions are provided.
File Tracker is ShareWare $15US/$20Cnd, but is fully
functional "out of the box" and includes a full manual. It has
been extensively beta-tested and is compatible with all Mac
models. FILE TRACKER REQUIRES SYSTEM 7 OR BETTER.

Keywords: POWERBOOK PORTABLE CLOCK CONTROL STRIP SLEEP SOUND VOLUME
Jeremy's Control Strip Modules 1.2.0 (by Jeremy Kezer)
This is a package of Control Strip modules, designed to work with Apple's
Control Strip software. The modules are:
* Jeremy's CPU speed CSM - Displays current clock speed in MHz, or indicates
relative fast/slow speed with tortoise/hare icons.
* Jeremy's Battery CSM - Replaces Apple's Battery Monitor module, but displays
more battery information in a smaller area! Also displays hard drive status
and estimated battery time remaining.
* Jeremy's Clock CSM - Displays the current time. Via a popup menu, you can
customize the appearance of the display.
* Jeremy's Sound Volume CSM - A direct replacement for the Sound Volume module
provided by Apple. The icon shows the current volume setting in both
numeric
and pictoral form, so you don't need to bring up the menu to determine the
current volume.
* Jeremy's Sleep CSM - A direct replacement for the Sleep Now module provided
by Apple. Via the popup menu, you can select whether or not to bypass the
dialog that appears when AppleTalk is active.
* Jeremy's Battery Time CSM - Displays Apple's remaining battery time, a
historical estimate that "learns" your battery life, or the elapsed battery
time.
Version 1.2.1 contains an updated version of the Battery CSM, which is now
capable of displaying battery voltage, and has a "go to sleep now" menu
option.

Subject: [*] Ladmo-060.hqx (A Bot for Bolo)
Hi People,
Here is the second major release of Ladmo, a bot and limited borg for Bolo.
This is version 0.60.
While the version is at only 0.60, Ladmo is very competitive with Indy 2.02.
A brief list of changes from previous versions:
- Uses Pill views to update info.
- Black Lists bases it is unable to get to.
- Improved Attack Tank.
- Improved fixing pills at a distance.
- Clears walls around allied pills
- Fixed some refueling bugs.
- Automatic CPU sensing, which changes some internal options when CPU
power is deemed to be low.
- A new Attack Pill Method, called "Advanced Attack Pill", which makes
Ladmo the first bot to use a wall trick to take pills at times.
Still needs some work, but is definitely an improvement.
- Regular Attack Pill is now an improved version of the "New Attack
Pill" in earlier versions which uses just a regular shoot and run
method.
- Some borg fixes and changes.
- Some strategy changes.
- Various other improvements and additions.
Read the Revision History inside the Read Me for a complete listing of
changes.
As always, comments and suggestions are welcome!
Thanks,
John

Mac Identifier 1.0 is a freeware system extension designed for Mac purists
who don't feel comfortable with a Mac that doesn't know its own model

Subject: [*] nShell(tm) v1.0.2; a programming environment
Version 1.0.2 of the nShell(tm) adds "exit" and "export" commands to aid
scripting, and corrects a few problems found in earlier releases.
The nShell(tm) is a traditional scripting environment for the Apple
Macintosh.
Features include:
- Twenty shells may be active at one time.
- Full multitasking and background operation allow shells to run in parallel.
- Shell variables and wildcards are fully supported.
- The shell transcript is recorded and may be reviewed at any time.
- The entire shell context, variables and transcript, is persistent and
may be saved and continued at a later date.
- Standard commands are provided for file and network maintenance.
- Shell commands load as separate resources, minimizing memory requirements.
- Flow of control statements, available in nShell-Pro(tm), allow robust
scripts to be developed.
This package includes a copy of the nShell(tm), its utilities, and a
hypertext user's guide. The user's guide may be read using any text
editor, but a "setext" browser, such as M. Akif Eyler's Easy View, will

Subject: [*] ShrinkWrap 1.1; a disk image utility
(c) 1994 by Chad Magendanz
ShrinkWrap is a freeware utility made to manage Apple disk images. It
incorporates the functionality of DiskCopy and MountImage into one 80K drag
and drop application, then does them one better by adding on-the-fly
compression/decompression with the StuffIt Engine.
ShrinkWrap has distinct advantages over MountImage in that it is an
application and not a control panel. As such, it uses no memory until it
is required and creates no INIT conflicts. Additionally, MountImage has a
well documented bug which frequently causes data corruption when running
the Installer from a mounted disk image. ShrinkWrap does not have this
problem.
Using ShrinkWrap, you can create disk images by simply dragging and
dropping your floppy drive icons onto the ShrinkWrap icon. To mount image
files on the desktop, just drag and drop the image files onto the
ShrinkWrap icon. (A normal application front end just like StuffIt
Expander is available for those who are not into drag and drop
functionality.) If you have the StuffIt Engine installed (which is now
distributed as shareware in Aladdin's DropStuff 3.5.1), ShrinkWrap will
automatically compress and decompress the image files as they're created,
mounted or converted according to the rules you set up in Preferences.
This application is designed to be a companion to StuffIt Expander.
Between the two drag and drop applications, you should be able to install
99.9% of the compressed on-line software for the Mac out there, including
important system extensions and system software updates distributed by
Apple.
New features implemented in version 1.1:
- Full DART support (read, convert & mount).
- Includes MungeImage 1.2 image driver which compresses read-only images
in memory.
- Copies image files back to floppy disk.
- Copies images disk-to-disk.
- Extensive image file verification options.

Subject: [*] StickyClick1.2; a mouse "lock" utility
I've have found this very handy utility which saves lazy Powerbook users
who prefer to "work" on other places than their desk from getting painful
hands. It it also an excellent help for disabled people who can only
operate their mouse or trackball with one finger. StickyClick sort of
simulates having a "lock" button on your mouse or trackball. By quickly
clicking in the menubar, the Macintosh will be made to think that the mouse
button is still down. You release the button locking by clicking and
releasing again. The author is Steve Zellers
.
According to the author, several incompatabilities have been reported with
a few other menubar-click-type utilities. I did not notice any problems
with any of my *many* extensions.

Subject: [*] Think C dcmd 1.0.1; glue for wirting debugger commands
Hi !
This package will allow you to write dcmds (debugger commands)
in Think C. It contains the glue code necessary to link the
"dcmd.o" library, and Think Put, a collection of routines to
create formatted output in dcmds.
To use this package, you need the "dcmd.o" library and the
"dcmd.h" header from Apple Computer, Inc. These files are
available along with MacsBug from ftp.apple.com in the
dts/mac/tools/macsbug/ directory.
Changes since version 1.0 :
- Now compatible with "TestDcmd". "Break on entry" didn't work
with version 1.0.
- The "@1." project now has the "Use MacsBug name" flag set.
- Renamed global variables.
- Some fixes in the doc.
IMPORTANT : There is no change in the interface between
version 1.0 and 1.0.1. Thus, there is no need
to modifiy your code.
This package is freeware and may be distributed freely.

I am writing an explanatory article about some Mac features, and I mention

In our school we have a number of different varieties of Macs, but I want
them all to have the same stuff on them. This was really simple in the days
before there was a specific enabler for each model...I'd just make a master

machine.
My question is, can I get around the specific enabler for each machine

Subject: [Q] System 7.5 and MacPPP
Hi! Yesterday I bought System 7.5 for my PowerBook 140 4/40, and installed
it. When I ran the 'Before You Install' disk, it told me that I had 3
extensions/CDEV's that were possibly incompatible with 7.5. The other two
I expected, but it told me that the 'Config PPP' control panel, which is
part of the MacPPP software, is incompatible. I went ahead and installed
the software, and moved Config PPP back to the control panels folder. I
haven't had any problems using the MacPPP or any other of my internet
software yet, but should I expect to? What kind of problem could happen?
My system config:
Powerbook 140, 4/40 w/ Ram Doubler 1.5
System 7.5, no PowerTalk or GX stuff
MacTCP 2.0.4 (installed before I got sys7.5)
MacPPP
Prometheous 144e modem (yeah, it sucks, but it's cheap!)
Also, I don't suppose anyone has written a control strip module that opens
a PPP connection using the configurations stored in MacPPP? I know that
all the software I have (like Eudora, Anarchie, etc.) will open the
connection if it is closed, but it would be nice also to be able to open
and close the connection from the control strip. Thanks for the help!

I think ToggleAT may do what you want. Sorry I can't point you to it, but
I'm sure it's on the usual ftp servers; try an archie search.
Also, if you'll consider commercial software, Connectix Powerbook Utilities
(CPU) does it, and I think there's an equivalent (Connectix Desktop
Utilities?) for desktop Macs.
It's very convenient on my Duo--AT on when docked, off when, undocked, I
need the ONLY port for use with a modem.
Hope this helps. Cheers!

Subject: Compressed PICTs in Quicktime for Windows
A question regarding compressed bit map files and "Quicktime for Windows"...
I'm using the shareware program "Graphic Converter" on my Mac to take
scanned photographs (in TIFF or PICT format) and make "Quicktime
compressed" PICT files out of them. This is nice in that the resulting
files can be read or imported into any Mac application (mostly Word and
Powerpoint for me), because they are still PICT files, but they are a
factor of 10 to 20 smaller than the original. They can be read and printed
on any Mac which has Quicktime, which for my local purposes is any Mac.
Many of my colleagues use PC clones, also with Word and Powerpoint for
Windows. My question is, if I buy "Quicktime for Windows" will they also
be able to view and print these images? I have seen a Quicktime viewer for
Windows which lets Windows users view Quicktime movies & compressed images
WITHIN THAT VIEWER, but is there an analog of the Mac Quicktime Extension,
which steps in "behind the scenes" and does display of a compressed graphic
placed in, for example, a Word file?
Thanks for any input!

Subject: Eudora and POP Server error
Can anyone help me with a "my set or yours?" dispute?
We are finally setting up our school network, and I'm having a problem with
Eudora 1.4.3 getting mail. The MacTCP setup seems okay; I can telnet,
gopher etc. with no problem, and I can send messages with no problem.
The difficulty arises when I try the Check Mail. It begins the check
procedure, seems to like the password I've given it, but stops with the
dialog:
There has been an error transferring your mail
I said PASS
and then the POP server said
-ERR System error, can't open temporary file, do you own it?
Eudora's Log for this transaction reads:
Thu Sep 08 11:22:11 1994
8:0.0.1 [email protected]
8:0.0.1 enter the
8:0.3.55 PASS
8:0.3.55 -ERR System error, can't open temporary file, do you own it?
8:0.3.55 POP
8:0.3.55 ALRT 1011
8:0.6.13 Dismissed with 1.
The server is an IBM 6000, and the System Administrator says he's using
POP3. Windows machines on the network running PCEudora have the same
settings that my Eudora has but do not suffer from this problem.
Any ideas?

To add $.02-worth: For several months I successfully used the above
feature of Silverlining to spin down an internal, non-boot, drive after
two minutes of inactivity, and to spin down the external boot drive after
ten minutes.
Then one day the boot drive started to spin down *just* as I did something
with the computer requiring the disk to be active, and IT COMPLETELY
TRASHED THE DRIVE'S CONTENTS. Neither Norton Disk Doctor nor DiskTools
could resurrect the thing.
I had to do a complete restore from backup. Now I keep the boot drive
spinning (but still do let the noisy internal Apple/IBM drive "sleep")!
BTW, I don't *think* that this is any particular indictment of
Silverlining, but rather just an unfortunate interaction with the "sleep"
function built into the SCSI spec.

Subject: norton Utilities
I have read the thread about Norton Utilities and Symantec with some interest
and disbelief.
About three months ago, I had a problem with my hard drive, which I could not
solve. The Norton Utilities seemingly fixed it, but really didn't. I
finally decided to call Symantec for help. The first tech support person I
got, after a short time on hold, was very helpful. He didn't solve the
problem, but did give a lot of help which could have solved it. I then did a
by the way, and got all sorts of other help from him. After doing several of
the things he suggested that I do, I called back, got another , and the same
thing repeated. Help, narrowing down the problem, and a very good BTW.
Finally, I caled back a third time, armed with all sorts of information for
a tech support person, and he finally had the brainstorm that I didn't have
the latest version of the software. In spite of that stupid revelation, he
was more than polite about it, and gave me more help. He arranged for
Symantec to send me the latest copy of the utilities, and called back the
next week to see if I had gotten it. When I said that I hadn't, he put me on
the telephone with Leo X (?), the manager of tech support, who told me he
would personally see that I got the software federal express. Which he did.
To sum up, I found Symantec to be more than eager to help me, they went far
out of their way to diagnose my problem, to give me peripheral help, and to
make sure it didn't happen again. And the manager of tech support called me
back a few days later to make sure everything was OK. I don't know what
other markets Symantec is in, but, if I ever need a package of that type, I
will buy theirs without thinking too much about the competition.

I agree. Why are you adding fuel? Posts like the above are gratuitous.

Apparently the reader must behave like an adult but the poster is welcome
to behave like a child. Perhaps info-mac should begin a daycare digest?
>And besides, the cranky posts are part of the charm of this digest.
You would, I assume, also find someone charming who spits on you while
you're out for a walk. I was motivated to join this thread by exactly this
type of supportive language DEFENDING gross behavior. Adults in *my*
opinion do not believe "courtesy is only for children." I'm sorry you
believe courtesy equates to Pollyanna.
Can we stop now?

[Hey. This thread is dead. It dosen't seem to me that we are making any
progress here, and we certianly aren't talking about Mac stuff. So, unless
some new development comes up, I'm going to kill this thread after the
next digest (so you have one more digest to get a final word in, but, please,
you don't have too).

The built-in video on the Mac IIci will not support 16" or 19" displays so
a 17" MultiScan could be connected to a IIci but if it worked at all it
would work as a really BIG 14" display.
But it does have 3 NuBus slots... so you could add an Apple display card
that will support a 17" display.

Subject: Recording Sound from Apple CD 300 (Q)
I have a Quadra
950 with an Apple CD 300. I would like to record some sounds from the CD, but
when I plug the CD into the external sound inputs of the Quadra instead of the
external speakers I use, I cannot hear what I am recording through the internal
speaker. I have Sound In set to "external" and Sound Out set to "built-in
speaker", but even though I can record and play back through the internal
speaker, I can't hear anything while recording. I assume that playthrough is
not available, since I don't see the check box which I have seen on AV models.
What I would really like is to have the CD connected to the sound inputs of the
Quadra and have it play through my external speakers while recording. Is there
any way to do this on a 950? TIA>

BBedit does it!! Also while using the Find command (something I just now =
found out...). Look for the BBedit demo at info-mac (probably in the text =
directory), and you can find ordering information in the readmes.

Subject: slowwwwww PowerPC
Hope this isn't an FAQ. I've been too busy to read info-mac carefullyfor
the last few months.
We have had a PowerPC mac for a few weeks and are stunned at just how
slow it is running the applications we use. Now I understand how the
non-native version of MS Word might be slower than an FX, but EVERY
application seems to do a little "hang" that lasts a few seconds at
launch time. Furthermore, the NATIVE version of Quark Xpress doesn't
seem a whit faster than plain old vanilla 680x0 Xpress on powerless macs.
On the recommendation of every Macintosh columnist in the world, we even
went out and bought Conflict Catcher. Hah, what a bust. It was supposed
to show emulation code in our inits that would slow everything down. It
didn't show any such thing in the non-native Adobe Type Manager, while
all the experts were saying that's what was causing the slowdown. We did
upgrade to the new ATM. Cute cowboy font, but no change in performance.
By the way Conflict Catcher _did_ show that all kinds of apple software
was running in emulation (like appleshare).
We're quite disapointed, and I'm confused, since other people have been
raving about the performance of native applications. Maybe we just need
to try a big, ugly slow Xpressfile to see the difference. Haven't had a
chance to do that yet.
Any comments appreciated.

Subject: System 7.5 & Chinese/Japanese Langauge Kits (A)
As a follow-up to my System 7.5 and Japanese Language Kit question... I have
heard from Apple and from sources on the Net (TidBITS and Dan Miller
[ZiffNet/Mac]) that the Chinese and Japanese Language Kits indeed don't work
with System 7.5. Apple says they will release an updated version of JLK at the
end of the year.
Commentary: I can understand the technical difficulties that might have come
into play to bring about this unfortunate situation. But it is disappointing
that Apple has failed to support their own product. WorldScript billingual
computing technology is one aspect of the Mac that Windows hasn't addressed.
It is an area where Apple shines. Microsoft seems to have choosen to ignore
WorldScript in developing their Mac applications, causing frustration, to say
the least. [Every Japanese program I've tried on my Mac with JLK has worked
fine EXCEPT for Excel.] Now even Apple is failing to support CLK and JLK.
It's too bad that Apple has chosen not to release a fix for this problem BEFORE
System 7.5 shipped. I hope that Apple will at least make the fix or update
available for free on the Internet and other online systems.
Thanks,

Subject: System 7.5 Preformance Problem...
Folks: 0920EDT 9409.06
I came up with a rather interesting behavior playing around
with a late BETA version of System 7.5 that I wanted to see if anyone
else had either seen or come up with a way around.
I installed just the core 7.5 OS on both a PowerMacintosh
6100 and a PowerBook 160 earlier in the month. This did not
include either the QuickDraw GX or PowerTalk modules.
Over a period of five days I started to notice considerable
delays on the PowerMacintosh 6100 with respect to ejecting disks,
dismounting CD-ROMs and shutting down. You would issue a command
to yank a disk or shutdown and wait for 30 seconds for the machine
to respond.
Thinking that it was possible that the 7.5 BETA that I had was
not yet tuned to the PowerMac I reinstalled clean versions of
System 7.1.2. The problem vanished instantly and utterly. I didn't
think that was strange.
Due to memory constraints on my PowerBook 160 I de-installed the
vast majority of System 7.5 (took out the System and the Finder) and
simply left the Apple Menu item and the Windowshades Control panel
on (functionality that I wanted at the time). I noticed no
preformance problems. Everything was cool.
Then, as the next couple of weeks went by, the PowerBook slowly
began exhibiting the same long wait when ejecting disks and shutting
down. Note at this time I was basically running System 7.1 with
the 7.5 Apple Menu Item and Windowshades Control Panels active.
Last night, needing a bit more memory, I decided to delete the
7.5 Control Panels. I got my memory back (its amazing what just over
100K can mean to you), but more interestingly all delays in ejecting
disks and shutting down instantly vanished.
Has anyone else experienced this behavior? Does anyone have a
work-around or an explanation? I can see the stupidity of running
both System 7.5 and 7.1 piecemeal on my PowerBook. Gods know what
strange things were happening. However, it does worry me that this
problem also came up, quickly, on a PowerMac that I did a proper 7.5
Core Install on.
Any related experiences or thoughts would be appreciated.

Subject: Trackpad too slow!!!
Since almost two months now, I've tried to make myself comfortable with
my PowerBook 540's trackpad. Everything is going right except for the
speed and the accelaration of the trackpad. I have put the adjustment for
maximum speed in the control pannel. Then, I tried to locate the trackpad
(or mouse) control pannel's ressource where are stored these adjustments.
I could not find it. It seems that things (system 7.1.1) have changed since
last year, when a folk explained how it could be patched. Did anybody find a
way to fix that "problem"?
Thanks a lot!

Marco,
I'm not a programmer, and I don't know what exactly you want to do, but:
why don't ju just rely on Apple's Communications Toolbox? There are tools
for nearly every protocol available - some for free, some for money.
There's a Zmodem tool from Mark/Space softworks, a DEMO version of it can
be obtained from
ftp://ftp.netcom.com/pub/mspace
The demo is limited to downloads only, no uploads. Contact Brian Hall for
info about licensing the full version.
Hope this helps. Best wishes,

Can anyone point me to ready-built journal subscription software for FMPro
or 4D - or if I'm really pushed - a PC package.
I need to find a working solution to be up and running by December 1994 - 3
journals, approx 600 subscribers in UK and Europe.
