A couple weeks ago I uploaded a mutual fund database in ClarisWorks
format. Because of an inquiry from one who did't have CarisWorks and
because I wanted to see if I could manage importing the data to
FileMaker Pro, here is the same database in FileMaker Pro format.

These 56 funds have been sorted by category and performance.
DISCLAIMER: I am not recommending that anyone invest in these funds.

Subject: [*] Account Manager 1.0; an FM Pro application for financial tracking

Account Manager 1.0 is a File Maker Pro application for keeping track of
various
financial accounts. Keep track of your bank accounts, keep track of your loan
payments, or keep track of you credit card purchases. Clone this application
and
keep track of all three or whatever other accounts you may have. Account
Manager
1.0 keeps a register fro upto five accounts. The user can register deposits,
withdrawals, and transfers of money from one account to another with the touch
of a button. Or, for more in depth records, the user can edit the register
directly.

Points of Interest:

Account Manager 1.0 allows the user (for each account) to pre-define automatic
transactions that can be registered at the touch of a button, such as paying
the
same bills at the end of each month or logging a pay check at each pay period.

Account Manager 1.0 allows the generation of financial reports for each account
or for all of the accounts together. The reports are based on sorted categories
in each of the accounts registers. You can see exactly where the money is going
to and where the money is coming from. This is great for budgeting money.

Suggestions, Questions, and Requests are welcome

Here's Arashi 1.1.1. It fixes some bugs in version 1.1 (most notably
a problem with 640x400 color screens) and there are some adjustments to
the game script, so difficulty will be slightly increased.

Arashi is a freeware 3D vector graphics arcade game. Source code is

Subject: [*] dsk-loader-11.hqx; Loader for TI DSP Starter Kit

DSK_Loader 1.1

DSK_Loader is the Macintosh equivalent of the DOS program DSKL. With
this program you can communicate with the DSK (DSP Starter Kit) from
Texas Instruments. This program bootloads a simple communications
kernel and then loads other software using this kernel.

changes since version 1.0

- fixed crash when scrolling in 32 bit memory mode.
- fixed hangup of PowerBooks when downloading to the DSK.
- enhanced graph window with offscreen update, grid, and
background which can be selected by the user by setting
misc options.
- some cosmetic enhancements, better errormessages etc.
- added a few more .dsk files.

The DSK and thus DSK_Loader is most interesting for people who want to
experiment with Digital Signal Processing at low costs. For HAM-Radio
operators it is a very interesting piece of equipment, Some
applications, like the KC7WW port of the W9GR filters are included.

Program: List Files 2.4
Author: Alessandro Levi Montalcini ([email protected])
Price: $5 cash (shareware)

FAT VERSION - CONTAINS BOTH 680x0 AND NATIVE POWERPC CODE

List Files is a handy utility that creates a text catalog
of anything you drop on it. You can format the text in many
ways and set up file filters to look for specific files.
You may create different worksets that can be recalled either
>From a menu or by holding down some keys when you drop
things on List Files' icon, so you can switch between
cataloging your floppies and searching for big text files
in a flash. List Files can save your catalogs automatically to
different destination folders, so you don't have to save
them manually for every disk or cartridge you want to list.
It can also search entire folders very quickly to find a
specific file inside one of your catalogs.

New in version 2.4:
- List Files can now read file versions in both short and
long formats and display them in the file prefix or suffix
- full pathnames dont disable indenting any more

Note: This is *NOT* a new release, this is a re-release of
Crystal Ball. It was pointed out that there may be some confusion
generated with this product and a similarly named spreadsheet
program set, so being a good neighbor, I renamed this Crystal
Ball to Magic Clear Ball. Interested people should review
the reporter of U.S Court of Appeals, Eighth Circuit.
836 F.2d 397 (1987).

This is Magic Clear Ball. It is your friend. It wants to help you
make decisions. Just open up Magic Clear Ball and ask it for advice.
It will graciously answer your questions with the utmost ease. Magic
Clear Ball is friendly, it doesn't require lots of fancy hardware
requirements. Magic Clear Ball needs only a Mac running System 7 or
higher in order to run. Magic Clear Ball is 32 bit clean and runs
perfectly on a 68040 based Mac.

New things in version 3.0:

* Two additional sounds
* COLOR!
* Better Movable Dialog Box for changing visions
* Moving Text!

PowerPC version can be made if people request it.

Subject: [*] Sparkle 2.1.4 A mac-look-and-feel MPEG and QT player and converter

This version makes the following changes to Sparkle 2.1.3
* Bugs were fixed
* Better EasyOpen support
* Cleaned up some parts of the user interface.
* MPEG encoding requires MUCH less memory---in typical cases 1/4 as much.

This version
* is not PPC native
* does not support sound
* does not support apple events
* does not support online help
These are all high priorities, pretty much in that order.

Wagner... yes Apple is distributing the software via CD-ROM. From what I

... and oh by the way... the MacZone is offering a $19.98 CD-ROM upgrade

Subject: Appletalk Always ON??

Currently I have a Mac with a blown modem port. So I use my
printer port for both modem and Appletalk use. Typically, I'll
boot the Mac and work for a while, print a few things, then
use Chooser to turn off Appletalk. Then I can use the modem
after switching cables.

Ugly, but it works. Problem, though: if I power down the computer
with Appletalk off, it comes back up with it off. Then, to print, I
have to use Chooser to turn Appletalk back on and have to reboot.

So: Is there a way to change Appletalk so that it always is *ON*
at boot time, regardless of it's configuration when the machine was
powered down?

Anyone have an Apple Remote Access script for the above mentioned modem?

We have a defective script on an LC III: the modem seems incapable of dialing
out (although it answers the phone and makes the connection just fine when
someone dials in). Although I've set the Control Panel to "Ignor Dial Tone" (
we have an in-house Siemens phone system which most modems cannot recognize as
a dial tone) nothing ever happens (including no message about "no dial tone

Anyway, if anyone has such a script we would be most grateful if it either
could be sent directly to me or posted to Info-mac (or anywhere else

Nathan,

Your user is out of luck. According to Deborah Branscum's September
"Conspicuous Consumer" column (Macworld, Sept. 1994), Pastel Development
Corporation (PDS) is "negotiating a sale of its assts and has not filed
for bankruptcy," but an attorney for PDS "could not confirm whether the
company was still selling or supporting its popular DayMaker personal
information manager." The office was closed as of May, and at press time,
the phones had been disconnected. Things may have changed since then, but
I wouldn't count on it.

My recommendation: buy something else. If your user owns a commercial
address book program (Dynodex, InTouch, Now Contact, TouchBase), she may
as well get the companion calendar manager (Day to Day, DateView, Now
Up-to-Date, DateBook). If she doesn't, look into In Control, First
Things First, or the more expensive ACT! or Arrange, as well.

Sorry.

Subject: Download Mac apps from AOL via IBM?

I'm having trouble figuring out how to download Macintosh applications from
America On Line using the Windows AOL software. (You MUST use AOL software
to access AOL.) I've got no trouble downloading documents or .sit files,
since these have no resource fork and the software handles them without
problem. (Stuffit Deluxe or Lite can handle those .sit files on the Mac,
by the way, although Stuffit Expander cannot.)

But real Mac applications or SEAs arrive in the IBM in a binary format I
haven't seen. It's not MacBinary format. I can't determine what it is, and
no translator program I have seems to handle it. So the question: what is
the format and how do I convert the IBM-received file to a real Mac file?
Or have I simply received only the data fork of the file stored on AOL, so
it's hopeless to expect to get a real Mac application from it? Thanks.

Craigh Vaughan's "MacWoof 1.5.3" when combined with ZZWoof 1.0b20 works
very well for many people.

I have tried MacWoof, CounterPoint, and Michael Keller's "Alice". I prefer
Alice.

Download the Alice 2.4.4 archive from any major Mac archive. If you want to
establish a stand alone Point system, as opposed to sucking down .QWK or
BlueWave packets, you will also need a mailer such as "Charon," which is
available on the umich.mac archive. A new & improved version of Charon may
be out before long :-)

The Alice archive includes plenty of documentation to help get you started.

This thread, IMO, should have died by now. Maybe I can help. :)

As someone who has had a very public spat with Al in this forum,
I think that this whole thing is rather overblown. People, the net
is the net. Especially in forums like this one, where there are
*tons* of people participating, there are going to be days when
people get cranky. Can't at least most of us deal with that?

I agree that the moderators don't need more work, and this would
be a silly addition to their responsibilities, at best. I assume that
at least most folks reading this are adults; at least *my* definition
of adult includes being able to look at unpleasant wording and not
have a bad day because of it. Neither Al or me or anyone else, IMO,
needs an someone to coddle them and make sure they sound pleasant -
let everyone stick their own feet in their respective mouths, and
if readers just can't cope with something that doesn't look like
a Hallmark card, well, may I recommend sticking with Hallmark.

Yes, Craig Vaughan exists; Fido netmail is unreliable, so probably the
easiest way to reach him would be [email protected], which is the
Internet address of a Washington DC BBS he frequents (sometimes -- he has
been sick with a heart transplant recently).

MacWoof 1.5.3 and ZZwoof 10.b17 are the latest versions (well, ZZ might be
b19 by now). The next revision of MacWoof will be 2.0, will be commercial
software, and will be out sometime in the not-too-distant future. (It will
incorporate the ZedZap code in ZZwoof.)

Other Mac Fido software includes the shareware point reader CounterPoint
2.3, which requires a mailer (Formula 1, Charon & Obolus, or even ZZwoof).
Also, Alice can be used as a point mailer, with T2 (included with Alice)
and a mailer.

All these programs are in the sumex archives (and mirrors) in the /comm
folder.

Let me know if you have any other Mac-related Fido questions...

Subject: NUM 3.0 nightmares

To whom it may concern,

I seem to have wasted the better part of yesterday getting a decent
installation of NUM 3.0 on my PowerBook 180c. [...]

The problem was really very simple: My PowerBook had extraordinary difficulty
reading your installation disks. It would spend long periods of time trying to
read comparatively short files and went into what appeared to be an infinite
loop when finally confronted with the problem of reading Disk Doctor. When
I tried to simply copy Disk Doctor to my hard disk, I was greeted with a disk
error. I then decided to check all four of your disks with Disk First Aid,
which dutifully reported that they were ALL in need of repair. Since you had
delivered them permanently write-locked, I then turned to Floppier from my NUM
2.0.6 to make copies of them all. Floppier very kindly reported that two of
them had bad sectors (including the "Emergency Disk" with Disk Doctor) but
managed, with great computational effort, to reproduce the disks. I was then
able to repair them all with Disk First Aid.

I now had four disks which the installer had no trouble reading.
Unfortunately, after the last disk had been read and Install Me
First was loaded again, the entire installation process crapped
out because Disk Doctor could not be written to the hard disk!
(Please note that I also tried this with all my extensions turned
off, and the installation was just as unsuccessful.) Custom installation
was no better: If I wanted Disk Doctor, I was basically consigning the whole
installation (except for the two control panels) to a fatal disaster. This
time, however, I WAS able to copy Disk Doctor directly to the hard disk; but
then I get a weird message about not having enough memory to run it.

Out of a perverse sense of curiosity, I decided to see if I could boot off of
your Emergency Disk. This attempt provoked the ONLY OCCASION in its entire
history to date that my PowerBook came up with a Sad Mac. From all this I
can only conclude that you have sent me a set of very defective disks. Since
I assume that you are not in the business of distributing defective disks, I
have decided that one explanation may be that you made your disks on a Power
Macintosh which, for some reason or another, does not have adequate
understanding of what the 68K machines need.

Subject: One Mac/ISDN/Internet Access

I'm trying to figure out the most hassle-free/inexpensive way to hook up a
single Mac via ISDN to the Internet. Pacific Bell has cheap Home ISDN
available now in my area of Salinas, CA.

The questions:

1) What is the best way to put a single Mac (a Centris 650 with built-in
Ethernet and available NuBus slots) on ISDN? I know I can use Ethernet and
link to an Ethernet-ISDN router, but that will cost me over a thousand
bucks for the equipment alone. There is no network involved--just one
machine needs access to ISDN.

Should I just get an ISDN card for the Mac? Which--and where to buy? Or are
there better approaches?

2) Whom should I use for ISDN Internet access? I'm planning on only an hour
or two of access per day via ISDN dial-up. There are no local Internet
access providers at all here in Salinas. I expect to pay for a long
distance call for access, so can consider any providers anywhere in the
country. So far, it looks like PSI is my best bet; Internex is another
possibility. Nexus is "experimenting" with ISDN access; the Well is
"expecting" it to be available for testing in October. Any better ideas,
anyone? I'd prefer SLIP/PPP access, but would consider a real fast shell
account.

With Home ISDN available throughout California for only $22.95 per month
plus equipment costs and installation by PacBell, this is not going to be
the first time we see questions like this! All help appreciated.

Yes they do: in the privacy of their homes, or in unmoderated net traffic,
not "my" info-mac. Gordon already checks postings for other types of
"appropriateness" and was even moved to insert a parenthetical admonition
into the very postings that started this minor row. My point is that
Gordon is a nice guy and bends over backwards to avoid interference. I
want him to feel comfortable that he has "a license to kill" posts that are
obviously over the line. I don't want him to be a censor. I DO want him
to be a censure. That's what a moderator is for. I'm not making more work

that Gordon will err, if at all, on the side of too strict.

I reiterate my simple rule: attack ANY THING you wish - ideas, products,

This is a follow up to my earlier report about the UConn CooP's assertion
that they'd received Quadra 630's with the wrong CPU (LC040 instead of
'040). I *did* ask, did you actually open the machine and check?
Evidently, the affirmative answer was based on the belief that *someone* at
the store had (well, it's the first week of classes and there is the usual
chaos).

I've now had my own opportunity to check the machine myself. The store set
up one that was returned by a customer who complained that it wouldn't run
software that requires and FPU. Gestalt 3.0.0 reports that it DOES have
built-in '040 FPU and Mandelzot 4.0.1 runs like a bat with the FPU option
checked. Hmm...

So why did two DIFFERENT customers tell the CooP that their Quadra 630's
wouldn't run FPU software? I noticed that the machine that had been
returned had a copy of MicroSoft Excel--alas, the store was closing and I
didn't have time to check the version number and try running it. My guess
is that it's an older version of Excel (older than 3.0a, I'm told) and that
it (or perhaps something else) crashed with a "co-processor not installed"
error message (I've seen that error on my IIci which definitely DOES have a
68882 FPU from time to time). It's a bogus error message.

I'm going to pick up a Quadra 630 for my daughter the science major this
afternoon. I'll try SPSS (co-processor version) on it (the acid test). I
expect it'll run just fine.

He says they have received three Quadra 630s from Apple (including one I
ordered) and ALL THREE have the 68LC040 (NO FPU!!!) instead of the 68040
that Apple's spec sheets and press releases promise.

Naturally, the failure of the Q 630's to contain the 68040 raises immediate
questions. According to the store manager, they began making inquiries to
Apple last week and have NOT received any reply.

Probably someone in Apple manufacturing goofed and put Q 630 cases on LC
636 (is that the number?) motherboards :-( So far, we haven't been able to
identify a single Q 630 with a 68040. I expect the longer Apple plays like
an ostrich, the more expensive this problem is going to be to rectify...
Meanwhile, my daughter would like to know when she'll have the Mac she
expects to take to college this year.

Has anyone got a Q 630 that they can CONFIRM actually has an FPU?

Subject: RAM Doubler 1.5 - (more comments)

A couple of weeks ago, I posted a comment about difficulties I
experienced when copying the RAM Doubler extension (updated from 1.0.1
to 1.5) from one system folder to the other. I was then set straight
on this problem by a number of people from all over the place, who
explained to me that for RAM Doubler to do it's magic, it has to have
a "loader" which kicks in early in the boot process and is an
"invisible" file (& which I hadn't copied, of course). I've since
used the "updater" to return to version 1.5 and had no problems since.
Thanks again to all those who wrote and posted in reply.

Can't locate it right now, but there's a company called RockWare that makes a
bunch of related software. All kinds of geology, oil, topography, etc. Try
the back of MacWorld for phone. Also, Sci-Tech Software for Science

BTW, MacSciTech Journal is a great resource for such things. 508-755-5242.

I'm looking for the soundtrack of DeBeers' diamond commercial. The
one with all the silhouettes and that nice diamond ring at the end of the
commercial for the diamond anniversary? If you have it, or can record it
for me, I would be greatly appreciative.

Thanks,

If memory serves me well, there is a product which will do just that.
Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your viewpoint) it's a
commercial product - Silverlining from LaCie.

Subject: Supra Fax/Modem Problems

PROBLEM
------

My 14.4 KBPS Supra Fax/Modem for the PowerBook appears to be
incompatible with a number of fax machines. That is, when
I attempt to receive incoming faxes from fax machines that were
made before 1990, the fax/modem fails to recognize the host fax
machineUs CNG tones and hangs-up.

I am baffled by this problem. I have spoken with the technical
support personnel at Supra on a number of occasions. They have,
however, been of little assistance.

EFFORTS TAKEN TO ATTEMPT TO REMEDY THE PROBLEM
-----------------------------------------------

*Reinstalled the fax software using the proceeding drivers
-Focus Enhancements 14.4 KBPS Modem for PowerBook
-Supra Fax/Modem 14.4 KBPS Modem for PowerBook
-PowerBook and Mac Portable Class 1 Driver

*Installed Faxcilitate

*Reduced the Maximum Baud Rate of Incoming Faxes
from 14.4 KBPS to 9600 BPS

*~~~~~~~~~~*~~~~~~~~~~*~~~~~~~~~*~~~~~~~~~~~*~~~~~~~~~~*

None of the previously mentioned measures have remedied the
problem.

Any suggestions regarding the correction of this apparent software
glitch would be greatly appreciated.

Opps! I mean Symantec AntiVirus for Macintosh. ;-)

SAM 4.0 refuses to remember exceptions for extensions that follow it
on boot up. I have clicked remember, cleared out the prefs file, erased
all the exceptions, started over, clicked remember, etc. No luck.
I have to sit there accepting/remembering standard extension stuff
whenever I boot my Quadra 840av. Bummer! :-(

Has anyone else found the same thing with SAM 4.0? I sent an e-mail
to Symentec about this, but no response so far.

Subject: System 7.5 = BrainPain

I am starting to dislike GX more and more!

1> EVERY time I do a Page Setup & click the more options button, then selct
LW options, 300dpi + FinePrint + Photograde are all turned on by default. I
have my 630 set to 600dpi by default, why does the LW GX drvier always turn
on 300dpi?? Interesting note: turn on Balloon Help, and it tells me that
clicking on the 300dpi button turns on 600dpi printing, & the 600dpi button
turns on 300dpi printing.

2> The US Letter paper setting has way too much of a wasted space border,
so I selet US Letter (5.8 x 11) from the custom options. Problem is that
this paper defenition has margins encoded in it that are not the same as my
630's max imageable area, and on the bottom of the page stuff dissapears.

2a> Soultion, use Paper Type Editor to create my own paper defenition that
contains the margins of a 630's max imageable are. Problem: this newly
created paper defenition only shows up as an option for those apps that are
GX savy (none) and not in the dialog that GX creates for those that are
not. Why can't I edit the paper defenition US Letter (8.5 x 11) that shows
up in every application?

3> ATM GX takes up 435k of mem even when only a 96k cache is selected! What
a joke! What happen to built in support for PS fonts??

4> A way to change the selected printdriver when you use the GX Helper
extension to turn on desktop printing whould have been nice. I do not like
how GX just picks one for you!

5> There is basicly NO manual for 7.5. We bought 6 System 7.5 kits
(regular, not upgrade) and all six came with with a manual that said
"Upgrade Guide" and is about as think as my pinky finger. Macintosh Guide
gives more info then this manual! It does not even mention any of the GX
setup options & stuff! Apple has screwed up a great product by giving
minimal information & support at purchase.

dear Mac Programmers,
I have (for a good while now) been trying to make the TOOLBOX ROUTINE for
TEXT-STREAMING work. Without any succes so far.
It is described in volume 2 of "Inside MacIntosh" on page 165 in the printing
manager chapter. It says that you can send a stream of characters including
control and escape sequences, directly to the printer.
This is exactly what I need to drive a much used Epson FX800 matrixprinter that
spits out an endless ribbon of sticky labels of the tractorfeed perforated
type.
I would so much like to replace the ancient PC that still runs this printer,
with my wellbeloved Mac, that I have taken up programming in C (Think C6) and
have bought a serial to parallel converter.

The program that I have written works fine, has a proper Mac interface and
all. The serial to parallel interface is OK; it works normally when I use the
Printlink Epson FX driver (V. 3.0.1) from GDT softworks. I can print in (rough
matrix 9 stuff) graphics from any Mac program.

The routine I wrote in many variations (calling the highlevel routine PrOpen()
instead of PrDrvrOpen(), calling them both, etc.) looks at its most basic like
this:

#include "AppGlobals.h"
#include
Subject: zebi-hc.1.hqx

Hello!

ZEBI is an addictive word game of unscrambling letters. It is fast and
fun, with several levels of difficulty, over 2200 words and an easy
interface.

It's small and something new. If you like words and anagrams, you'll
love ZEBI.
