Subject: [!] abstracts files name change
To improve the consistancy of our file name suffix scheme, our files
of abstracts, which are now named
adir/00adir-abstracts.abs
will, starting July 10, be named
adir/00adir-abstracts.txt
Abstracts files are and always have been text files and that will now
be clear from their suffixes.
File names in the info-mac/help/abs/ directory will also change.
These files are actually aliases ("symbolic links" in Unix parlance)
to the abstracts files in other directories. We have recently
automated creation of these aliases, and the new names will follow a
simple formula that uses the parent directory names, for example,
"grf.txt" and "grf-util.txt".

K1 Librarian is an application for the Macintosh which allows you
to make up library of voice data for K1. One window has one voice
data, and you can open windows as many as you want.
When this application receives bulk dump MIDI data, new window will
open and show you it's parameter. You can keep 32 voices in one file,
so it's easy to replace K1's internal 32 voices.
Apple Script recordable.

Subject: [*] Buzzz! 1.1 -- an AfterDark module
B U Z Z Z ! Version 1.1 -- An After Dark module
What is it?
Buzzz! displays flying insects on your screen, using high
quality rendered graphics and a realistic flocking
algorithm. The insects swarm around, their movements
driven only by the internal dynamics of the group.
Occasionally, an 'attractor' will appear, towards which
they move. This is a light bulb for the moths, a pot of
jam for the wasps, and ... well, I'll just leave you to
find out what attracts the flies.
Requirements
This After Dark module requires Color QuickDraw and makes
extensive use of GWorlds: it therefore requires System
software 6.0.5 or later. A colour screen is recommended,
and the rendered images look beautiful with thousands or
more colours. Being fairly computationally intensive, the
animation also looks better on a fast machine. The module
uses only the main (startup) screen.
Changes from Version 1.0
* Corrected pernicious bug which caused crashes in
low-memory situations.
* Corrected problems on multi-screen setups.
* Improved error handling
* Added 'sysz' template, so users can modify this with
ResEdit.
* 'ictb' modified to correct font probelms in the 'Settings'
dialog on some machines.
* Added 'Scattiness' setting in the 'Settings' dialog.
and others...see the enclosed Version History file for more
information.
Distribution & Disclaimer
Buzzz! is Freeware but not in the Public Domain; you may
distribute it to others so long as you include the
documentation, but you may not charge for it either
alone, or as part of a package. This module is supplied

Subject: [*] Chat 2.0.4; for conferencing over the Internet
Chat is a TCP/IP Chat Server for the Mac, by running it on a Macintosh with
MacTCP, it will allow people to telnet to your macintosh, and join together
in a group discussion.
It was originally written by Peter N. Lewis. Extensive modifications by me
have turned it into version 2.
**** WHATS NEW IN 2.0.4 ****
Several bugs have been fixed including the infamous port 1420 problem.
Also, a beep has been added that is sounded when you receive a page.
The About box has been changed.
Chat is now distributed by default with log files for all channels turned
off, this can be easily changed by filling in file names.
The default port is now set to 23, so you can simply telnet to the
machine chat is running on, without specifying a port number.
The problem with Chat not quitting when you shut down or restart has been
fixed. For you programmer types out there - let this be a lesson to you:
"Never name the Quit item in your file menu anything other than 'Quit' - it
was 'Quit Chat Room'".
Email any comments/suggestions/complaints/etc. to: [email protected]

Infinity Clock 1.0.1 for Control Strip
by Troy Gaul, Infinity Systems
The Infinity Clock is a module for Apple's Control Strip that displays an
analog clock showing the current time in the Control Strip bar.
Clicking on the clock icon will change it to a calendar page icon (showing
the month and date) for a few seconds. By holding down the mouse button,
you will get a popup menu displaying the current date and time in a text
format.
Changes since 1.0:
- Will now remember settings of date and time format for the popup menu
across restarts.
- Reduced memory footprint.

Infinity Volume 1.0.1 for Control Strip
by Troy Gaul, Infinity Systems
Infinity Volume is a module for Apple's Control Strip that replaces the
sound volume module Apple includes with that utility.
It differs by changing the icon that appears in the strip to reflect the
current volume. The Apple module has only one icon, so the only way to
determine the volume is to click it and look at the selection in the popup
menu that is displayed.
Changes since 1.0:
- 1.0 may have kept the hard drive on a PowerBook from spinning down. 1.0.1
will not do this, but because of this, it may not display a change of sound
volume in its icon until the hard drive is spun back up.
- Reduced memory footprint.

InterSLIP Strip Module 1.0b1 for Control Strip
by Troy Gaul, Infinity Systems
InterSLIP Strip Module is a module for Apple's Control Strip that allows
you to control an InterSLIP connection. In order to use this module, you
must have InterSLIP installed, and have it properly configured to connect
to a SLIP host.
Clicking on the icon will display a popup menu. The top item shows the
current status of the InterSLIP connection. The middle item allows you to
open the InterSLIP Setup application, and the bottom item allows you to
connect or disconnect from the selected SLIP host (the one that is
hilighted in the InterSLIP Setup application). The icon will also change to
display the current status of the connection.
This is BETA software. It has all of its features implemented, but it has

but also future possibilities.
Despite its condensed and generalized format it still provides some thought-

upcoming PowerPC line.

Subject: [*] NotifyMail 2.4 - Instant email notification
NotifyMail is a system extension that listens for a finger connection. When
it receives the connection (for the appropriate user), it will notify you
of new email. This can be done by having Eudora check your mail, display a
dialog box, play a sound, or run any file. This file could be an
AppleScript applet. If you aren't using Eudora and your email package is
scriptable, you can still use NotifyMail to have it automatically check for
mail.
System Requirements: System 7.0.0 or higher, MacTCP 1.1 or higher, Eudora 1.4
or higher (optional), POP account on a UNIX or VMS machine.
NotifyMail is distributed as shareware. Please see the documentation
for more instructions.
Enhancements from 2.3
- Added ability to display mailbox window which shows a count of new messages.
(This feature only available in System 7.1 or later.)
- Added option to log finger requests to a file
- Added option to launch an application in background (before it always
launched the program into the foreground).
- Configure NotifyMail changed to allow more flexibility.
- Various bug fixes
I recommend that all users of previous versions upgrade. Due to some
changes and bugs fixes, I am unable to support old versions.
You can now register NotifyMail via electronic mail with a credit card!
Simply use the Configure NotifyMail program (included) and choose Email
registration...an email message will sent to me and I'll send you a

This version has the following significant changes since v1.3b4:
June 28 - v1.3b5
- fixed ISO8859 Macintosh conversion
- added support for "REPLYVIAEUDORA" setting
- added min/max header space command to Articles menu
- fixed yet another nasty little bug in the newsrc code.... this one caused
things to hang during the startup count of unread articles
- click-dragging to select article subject lines in the top list is now
possible
- added Un-Catch-Up option to Articles Menu
- bogus groups in the newsrc now result in a prompt asking whether the bogus
group should be deleted/unsubscribed
- added StandardGetFolder and helpful info to the Edit Settings window
- click-dragging of subscribed groups in newsrc window is now possible (cool
and much easier to do than I thought)
- tweaked up/down scrolling and page-up/page-down for help window
- added support for multiple in/out translation tables (see note above for more

- added support for DELETEREADARTICLES setting

Subject: [*] VacationMail 1.0.1; a Mac interface for Vacation
o Changes in version 1.0.1:
Due to popular demand, it has been modified to allow usage even if the
program is not registered. This will allow users to check to see if it
will work in their environment before purchasing it.
A few obscure fixes were made.
o What it is:
VacationMail is a utility for UNIX based e-mail users (such as
Eudora, TCP Connect, ZMail, LeeMail, etc.) that quickly and easily
configures a "vacation" feature to reply to all personal incoming e-mail
messages while users are unavailable. Since it takes advantage of a UNIX
server, it works even if you're not checking your mail.
Users setup their mail account information and then create the
vacation message they wish to have sent out. VacationMail is
"Eudora-aware". So users of the popular public domain and commercial
mail program will be able to configure VacationMail with two simple
clicks - skipping the account setup step. The auto response system in
vacation will only send one message per week to any one e-mail address
and will not respond to messages from mailing lists or list servers.
A full Unix based mail account is necessary for VacationMail to run
properly. (e.g. You must have more than just a POP mail account.)

Subject: [Q] Third Party HD Formatters
Hi,
I have a problem that I hope one of you can help with. I just
recently upgraded to FWB's Hard Disk ToolKit version 1.5.1.
I have now discovered that their support of my Insite I325VM
floptical mechanism is not correct. Flopticals drug to the
trashcan no longer eject and inserted 1.4M floppies no longer
appear on the desktop. Their support of this
mechanism in version 1.2.1 was very good (ie. it worked).
A call to the tech support department revealed that there is
no patch for this device and there are no plans to support
it. This really annoys me, as I have always believed that
FWB was the only company to consider when getting a third
party formatter. The further annoyance is that this
mechanism is listed as one of the mechanisms they support.
Long story short, I am looking for another third party
formatter to replace FWB's HD Toolkit. FWB is very robust
when it comes to setting parameters in the driver. The
formatter I select to replace Hard Disk Toolkit must allow
me to have the same type of control over the parameters in
the driver. The other thing the formatter must be able to
do is correctly handle the floptical mechanism.
Therefore, I am soliciting any advice I can get in regards
to good third party hard drive formatting software. Please
mail me with any suggestions and or references to magazine
reviews/articles.
Thanks for your time,
Eric

One of the users I support is having a problem with an alias to a volume
that requires a different UAM than the standard Apple UAM. Here's the recipe
for this problem:
o DEC PathWorks on VAXen for AppleShare servers
o Part of the PW client installation is a VMS UAM (user access method),
which allows passwords of 6-32 characters, instead of Apple's max of
8 characters; you select the UAM in a dialog that pops up after you
select a server in the chooser and before you enter your username and
password.
o User mounts volume using the VMS UAM
o User creates alias of volume
o User later dismounts volume
o User tries to remount volume by double-clicking the alias
o It doesn't work
o User calls us to complain that it doesn't work
Does anyone know why this doesn't work? Or, does anyone know that it is
supposed to, in which case, we've got an even bigger problem -- trying to
figure out what this user did to mess things up!
Thanks in advance!

Subject: Announcing NotifyMail 2.4.1 - Instant Email Notification
I'm pleased to announce the latest version of NotifyMail, an instant email
notification utility.
It can be found at:
ftp://ftp.hmc.edu/pub/mac/NotifyMail_2.4.1a.cpt.hqx
It will eventually appear on various archive sites.
If you have any questions, please let me know.

And here are the questions:
1) How is SCSI termination handled with these drives? It seems that they

2) How can the SCSI address be set? Usually this is done by a row of

Mark,
ZTerm (and I think also most other comm.-software) has a possibility
tu "exchange control and command" keys or even a menu-item where you
could select your control-key sequence.
I think RedRyder offered a button bar where you could store your

Has anyone out there purchased a computer system through Apple's

so in order to get the educational discount Apple dictates that one _must_

Also, does anyone know if Apple is planning on getting a PowerPC

Subject: Filemaker Pro "Nested Fields"
Dave Scott asks:
Is there any way within FileMaker Pro 2.0 to "float" those fields to the
appropriate places in the looked up text as it's copied from the lookup
file?
Not directly since FMP independently "processes" the contents of each filed
when doing layout, other than shifting up and left.
The solution I recommend is to create a calculation field that concatenates the
text from the lookup field you use for the body text with the variable text you
want to input. You may need to "break up" the body text into separate
lookups,or use the text parsing functions of FMP's calculations to get each
chunk of text from the lookup field. Thus your "Letter Body" field (or
whatever its called) is a text calculation like (left(lookup1,1,50) &&
Variable1 && left(lookup, 51,20) && V2....) or something like that (i don't
think the "left" syntax is exact, but you get the point).
Good Luck

GH> South Central Bell is threatening to make 128kbps ISDN connections
GH> available in my exchange. Can anyone point me toward an economical
GH> source for the required ISDN Network Terminator 1 (NT1) terminal
GH> adapter for data connections?
Gib, this is a bit off the Mac topic, but since ISDN seems to be
kicking up it's heals lately, there maybe general interest in the
net, so I'll try to answer your questions.
While the price of most electronics has been decreasing over the
years, the NT1, which is really more telephone company equipment
that user equipment, has gone up. You can thank primiarily AT&T
who have chosen to shaft their customers and the FCC whose ineptitude
forced the NT1 to be a customer expense in the first flame. (Okay,
I'm done flaming. Sorry for the outburst.) Most "civilized" countries
around the world provide the NT1 at no additional cost to the user.
Exceptions are the U.S. and Canada.
Anyway, I understand that Bell Atlantic Teleproducts has competively
price NT1s. They can and do sell outside the Bell Atlantic region.
Try calling 1-800-570-ISDN and asking for the Bell Atlantic Teleproducts
telephone number.
GH> Rate is $44/mo for the first 64kbps line, as opposed to $25/mo for
GH> a standard line. The second 64kbps line is an additional $13/mo.
GH> They tell me you can have two separate numbers or both on the same
GH> number, and you can use one for data and the other for voice
GH> simultaneously, or both together for a single data connection to
GH> make 128kbps throughput (before compression?).
ISDN line rates vary wildly between states. The rates you mentioned
sound high if, by a second "line" you mean additional ISDN B channel.
Pacific Bell, for example, sells a residential ISDN line with two
64 kbps channels and one 9.6 kbp channel for $29 per month. You
can get the same service from your own South Central Bell for $26 per
month for residential service in Tennessee. (Business rates are higher
than what I've quoted in both locations. Also, I won't quote Bell Atlantic
of West Virginia rates--they are outragiously high.)
The number of numbers depends on the switch you are using. Some (like
AT&T Custom) use the same number for both channels. Other uses
different numbers for data and voice.
GH> 128kbps makes 14.4kbps look puny! Mosaic would probably even be
GH> usable!
We have 45 ISDN Ethernet bridges connected to our campus FDDI backbone.
Mosaic runs rather nicely across the 128 kbps line, even with graphics.
Typical throughput (using Combinet ISDN bridges) with compression and
both B channels is 210 kbps. Really not bad and it does beat 14.4
kbps, as you said. Not only is the rate faster, but it is a
synchronous connection. Synchronous connections are inherently more
effecient than asynchronous because there is no need to send start
and stop bits, so the overhead is lower.
(End of diversion)
For all those who look for more Mac specific responses on the net,
thank you for your patience in this somewhat non Mac response. (Although
Macs work rather nicely across ISDN.

Subject: ISDN and source for NT1 Terminal Adapter?
Gib,
This isn't quite what you asked, but close enough. The Gandalf line of
ISDN LAN bridges includes an NT-1 built-in. Their current offerings are
pretty high-end. The 5240i sells for close to $1500 (ouch)! But, IMHO, is
worth every penny. It dedicates an Intel i860 processor just to data
compression, runs two compression algorithms in parallel on each packet,
looks for the best result and sends that with an algorithm flag. They
claim up to 8-to-1, which I don't see very often, but I do see an average
of 4-to-1 after accumulating statistics for a month on a lot of stuff
including Mosaic. It can be set to bring in the second B channel only when
the traffic flow rises above a threshold, and does a really nice job of
mapping IP addresses into ISDN calling numbers. My first IP packet
triggers a call setup, which takes about a half-second. All in all, my
connection from home is almost indistinguishable from my direct Ethernet
connection at work.
Gandalf is supposed to have unit in the $900 range out by fall. I
understand it will also have an NT-1 built-in, will have battery backup
(for a life-line connection), will have a standard RJ-11 on the side you
can plug your normal analog phone into, and will drop back from 128kbs to
64 if an analog call comes in or if the analog unit goes off-hook. On the
other hand it will only offer 2-to-1 compresson.
I still have a US-Robotics Courier (that I used to use for SLIP) sitting
on the floor next to the Gandalf. It has been months since I used it. All
in all I am one happy camper.

Subject: NuBus Capability in a MiniDock Thing?
Hi folks,
Have any of you heard of something like a MiniDock for a Duo that has NuBus
capabilities? Or a SCSI--NuBus converter suitable for a normal powerbook? (
or maybe a serialport--SCSI--NuBus trans-integrator?!). Such a device might
also have its own battery or a feed to the Duo's PSU, or its own higher
power PSU for instance.
Reason: A PhD student here will eventually be periodically taking a Mac
away to a hospital to do testing - when I've finally designed and built
some special equipment - but the interface with the Mac is probably going
to have to be a National Instruments NB-MIO-16 NuBus card we have here - in
any case this is what all the development has been for so far! While we're
sort of resigned to lugging a desktop Mac and a truckload of support
vehicles about the place, a smallish, compact, portable slab-like box which
plugs into a Duo's edge-connector PB SCSI or somesuch would be great.
Any suggestions about this will be greatly welcome. Please email directly
to me as (to my chagrin) I've been abstaining from regular homage to

consistent workload here information overload is scrambling my brain.
Normally I can catch up with 'world events' a few days after they've been

Subject: PB170/System Update 3/Problems continued...
Jim,
I find your PB 170 problem interesting. I too have a 170 with a new
Quantum drive which came to me preformatted, and on which I have
installed system 7 Pro and system 3.0 update. It has crashed twice,
both times on the road where I didn't have my utilities with me. The
symptom was a corrupted disk. The first time, I was able to recover the
disk and the data installed after I got home using Norton Disk Doctor
and Speed Disk. I reinstalled new system software, and all seemed
good. The second time, I could not not recover it although I could see
the disk using a Disk Tools Disk to boot. The Data was badly corrupted,
the directory was badly damaged, but I was able to get the newer filess
off before I lost all use of the drive, and the others were backed up.
When I got home I had to reformat the entire drive from scratch. It
appears ok now for about two weeks. My drive is a Quantum 250 packaged
by Microtech and sold as a Roadrunner 250i. I actually have an RMA from
Microtech which I am considering cancelling because it seems fixed.
My point in all this is that you and I have one thing in common, and
that is problems with preformatted Quantum drives procured from
different (I suspect) vendors. After reformatting,
we seem to have good drives, although I want a great deal more time to
prove this. It makes me suspect that Quantum is distributing
preformatted disks that are defectively formatted.
Thanks for publicly airing your experience. I could not find an
Internet address for Microtech, but I will take the liberty of posting
this and the text of your message to them via their tech support

Subject: PowerPC and Other OSs
We just got a PowerPC and I had told my boss that the PPC would run many
different operating systems. Well, so far it looks like a Mac and it
runs like a Mac. I know I need to order SoftWindows, but I thought it
came with SoftWindows installed. I guess only some versions do. Now, how
bout UNIX? Do I partition the drive and install UNIX on the partitioned
area? Anybody done this? Any ideas?
Thanks

The emulation speed can range from (generally) a little below a IIci on up
to a low-end Quadra (605/610) depending on the calls made by the
application. Lotus probably makes enough calls to native toolbox functions
that it does end up with a native speed boost for some things. Programs
like Excel which bypass the toolbox routines to do their own thing hit the
low end of the scale (and often-times even lower).
You also have to keep in mind that your new PM6100 uses the new SCSI
Manager *and* the software that you've reinstalled on it's hard drive would
be less fragmented than they were on your IIci--both will improve the speed
of launching an app and opening a file.
Of course, if/when Apple finally gets the new emulator out there you will
*really* see a new burst of power--about double the current emulator.
Probably less, though, if they simply patch the old one with ROM overrides
in the system software rather than offer a ROM tradeout.

Subject: PPP Crash, PRAM-zapping, and Duo SCSI
My Duo 230 wedged and couldn't see its internal hard disk on boot.
I was editing in emacs (1.13b) when something (Eudora, presumably) decided
it should cause PPP to dial the phone. Next thing I know, I'm in MacsBug
with the message "User break", and the screen's dimmed (is that a clue?)
and nothing works, not even command-control-powerOn. I thus resort to
power-cycling and on reboot get a flashing ?/flopette icon.
The last time this happened, my systems people initially thought my disk
had died, but experiments showed that the Duo was just ignoring the SCSI
bus altogether (wouldn't see a known good external drive). Booting from a
flopette, we were able to mount my disk using some SCSI tool, and
everything looked fine, but no joy on reboot. By trial and error, we
discovered that zapping the pram brought things around.
This time, after searching around for the right key combo to zap my pram
(one of which produced a fairly ear-shattering tune on the speaker) I
finally remembered that it is command-option-p-r. This caused everything
to be right once again.
But I'd love any clues on how to avoid this problem in the future!
Is it a "bad thing" to zap my pram often? What does it remember that I am
losing by zapping it? And is there any theory as to how this crash causes
the Duo to decide there is no SCSI disk and why pram zapping changes it's
mind?

Ever since, in a random fashion, logging off a VM host or quitting
tn3270 will cause the screen icons to change color or perhaps the
screen background (desktop) to change. I particularly notice it with the
blue screen with the two aqua dots. It changes back eventually
when logging off or quitting tn3270.

I have seen this happen when the Finder Prefs file is damaged. The screen
gets slowly draw in odd chunks, slower and slower until the machine
essentially stops. Restarting seems to go fine, but when returning to the
Finder, one can't do anything.
I'd trash the Finder Prefs that lives in the System Folder:Preferences
folder and restart. It fixed my machine when it did this.

Subject: Report on 3-button mice for the mac
KEYWORDS: 3 three button mouse mice Logitech Mouse Systems
This is a report on 3-button mice for the mac gathered from
responses for my recent posting to info-mac. The bottom line is that it is
pretty much a toss-up between the Logitech Mouse Man and the Mouse Systems
A3 ("A" raised to the third power) Mouse. Most users of each were satisfied
that the software supplied with either mouse could assign to the buttons
pretty much whatever key-stroke you wanted. The Logitech is mechanical and
the Mouse Systems mouse is optical.Several people also noted that the
Logitech mouse did not default to a standard mouse if your computer is
booted with extensions off whereas the Mouse Systems one does. The Logitech
was reportedly more comfortable to use. A quick check with MacConnection
indicated that they are approximately the same price; however, the price of
the Mouse Systems one varied quite a bit from place to place ($65 - $85) so
shop around. The A3 has a lifetime buyer protection plan whereas the
Logitech does not.
I purchased the Mouse Systems mouse because it is optical and
therefore won't as easily get dirty and because if offered higher precision
than the Logitech. It works great with MacX on a PowerMac (8100/80)
ALTHOUGH the MacX setting in the software is nearly useless. If one uses
emacs on a remote unix machine, the key mapping that the Mouse Systems CDEV
provided with the MacX setting interferes with using the arrow keys to move
around a file. Instead, I used the more general setting ("3-button power")
and mapped the keys using the option key; if you have never used MacX you
will not know what this means, nor should you care. Suffice it to say that
cut and paste, unix-style, can be mimiced with MacX and the Mouse Systems
A3 mouse. Other people reported the same happy result with the Logitech
mouse.
Thanks to all those the took the time to respond.

Subject: SimpleText 1.1 is still buggy
Well, I downloaded SimpleText 1.1 and it's still got some problems.
I hope Apple reads this and fixes them up:
1) In the about box, pressing a key brings up a "can't edit document" alert.
2) I still have problems losing the top and bottom line of a document when
I'm working with it (can't scroll to the very top or bottom).
3) The screen redraws when you delete a line (i.e. delete past the
beginning of a line so the insertion point moves up).

Subject: Souping up a IIsi
I have finally worked up the guts to try replacing the 40 MHz oscillator
crystal in my IIsi with a 50 MHz crystal to up the clock speed to 25 MHz. I
have a question, though. Is a 50 MHz crystal the fastest that can possibly be
used? In other words, why only use a 50 MHz crystal and have the computer run
at 25 MHz when a person might be able to put in a 100 MHz crystal and up the
clock speed to 50 MHz?
(I think I can feel people out there shuddering as they read this. A IIsi at
50 MHz? What a riot...)
Now then. Has anyone tried using a crystal faster than a 50 MHz oscillating
crystal? If so, how has it worked?
If people haven't, could someone who is more knowledgeable about the
electronics give me an idea of what would happen? Would the computer simply
not
work? Would it start to smoke? Will I fry the '030 chip? And if it would
work, would I have to get faster SIMMs? (I'm using 2-meg 80ns SIMMs right
now.) I will hold no one responsible for any damage done to my computer. (I,
after all, am the one performing the surgery.) I was planning on gluing a heat
sink to the chip anyway if I only put in a 50 MHz crystal (thermo-conductive
epoxy), so heat dissipation shouldn't be a problem.
Please respond by e-mail, as I don't see all the issues of info-mac. If I
learn something from people that seems useful, or if I go ahead any try to have
a screaming IIsi, I'll post what ends up happening.

Subject: switch mac voices with text controls (Q)
The online book initiative has stories in it I can get free by
gopher. In particular, Mark Twain has a story called "What is Man". I'd
like to listen to it while doing choirs without hearing the letters "OM"
and "YM" for the people. I'd like the voice to change under text control.
Is this possible. What are the key words to look up? Could I just
paste from the mac happy birthday song post easily? I'm scared to just
look in megabytes of instructions and would like some reassurance.

When I got my Logitech back in December 1993 I had problems getting it
working properly on my 840AV. I called Logitech and they said it was bugs
in MouseKey 1.11 which was due for an upgrade soon and which I could get
over their dial-up BBS. Well, I haven't heard anything since but I assume
that by now there is a more robust driver out there. I would love to hear
about it or better yet, find out if it is on any anon FTP site. BTW, Kevin
is right - keep the old mouse for those extensions-off reboots!

All the other suggestions about File Sharing may be turned on are valid,
but there is one other possibility, and that is, the volume may actually be
locked. A freeware applicaiton called "UnlockFolder" will unlock the
volume.

Subject: utility for file name change from upper to lower?
Hi,
Does anybody know a drag&drop utility which
can change file names from upper to lower cases?
The problem arises when I got some C++ file for PCs
to Mac. The file names are all in upper case. I am
using symantec C++ which does not recognize the
upper case suffixes. Since there are many files,
it is tedious to change the file name by hand.
Thanks for any info.

Apologies in advance for any misuse of terminology.
I have an LC with 4K of RAM. When I try to launch Word 5.1, with
only the Finder and Dark Side of the Mac running, leaving just
shy of 2K of memory available, I get an error message saying
that there is not enough memory to run Word, and that I should
change the memory allocation. Word's memory is already set to
1024K, so, like, what's the deal? This error message only pops
up sometimes, and Word will eventually launch successfully after
1 or 2 more tries.
