Subject: [Q] Converting .DSK Images to DiskCopy for Apple II Emulators
I am looking for a way to use the Apple II disk images from the asimov
archives (in .DSK format) on an Apple II emulator on my Mac. Is there any
utility (or any trick) for converting .DSK images into standard Disk Copy
images or ones compatible with emulators like Fast Eddie?
Or is there any way to use these images without converting them? Or is
there another archive like Asimov that has images compatible with Mac
emulators?
Thanks in advance,

While I am experienced Mac user, I am a *very* beginning guitar player. I
vaguely remember that a program was once submitted to the archives that
utilized the Mac as a guitar-tuning aid. Unfortunately, I can't seem to
find this program now. I would be very grateful if someone could point me
in the right direction, or even whether or not such a thing exists. In the
meantime, I am going to try to soothe my injured fingertips and hope that
they develop callouses soon!

Subject: Async sounds possible?
I'm looking for Mac software (preferably Free/Share) that will allow me to:
1) Assign several Sounds to different Macintosh keyboard keys;
2) ...so that when a key is pressed, its designated sound plays (sounds are
original SoundEdit format, but could be changed);
3) and MOST IMPORTANTLY: that more than one sound can play at once, ie.
that they play asynchronously.
I suppose it's a bit like a "piano" software, but it really can be very
simple provided that I can play sounds async: eg. press key "1" (key 1
sound starts to play), then straightaway press key "2" (sound 2 starts, but
also sound 1 continues to play). Obviously this means that sounds will have
to be able to overlap, not truncate the ones already playing.
I've tried SoundEdit (commercial), but as far as I can see it doesn't
permit key assignments, or any way to play two sounds together while
allowing realtime adjustment of their startpoints.
I'm using a Quadra 650 with 7.5.1, but have access to new powermacs if
that's what it takes to get the above. Is there any software that does it?
Is sound asynchrony possible on 040 macs, do I need particular versions of
QuickTime etc.?
Any help appreciated!

Dear Dr. Clarke -
I just read your posting to the Info Mac digest (V14 #297), and I
agree with and appreciate your frustration. However, I feel that the title
of your post and its contents are markedly misleading and unfair to Guy
Kawasaki. As you probably know, the Evangelist contains several different
types of postings that are clearly prefaced by certain characters. Derrat
Sorcerum's posting contained the "$$" in front of it. As you know, these
postings are not "endorsed" by Guy. Rather, Guy alerts us to the
commercial nature of the post and has in the past reminded us of "caveat
emptor".
Your post to the Info-Mac digests suggests that Guy has endorsed this
program. As a reader of the evangelist for several years, I would never
have reached that conclusion without seeing an explicit note from Guy. I
believe that the MacWay Evangelist is a tremendously useful source of
information as long as one remembers to categorize the posts I can
understand that your frustration is great, but it may be appropriate to
send another post to the Info-Mac digest clarifying the issue and
delineating more accurately Kawasaki's role. (Perhaps an apology would
also be in order.)

replies.

1. A number of individuals advised me of the free drivers at
http://www.hp.com .
2. Jim Bishop advised me to check what kind of connectors the DeskJet and
Mac had. The connectors would ultimately determine the type of connection
that could be made.
3. Anwaar Bhatti, B.J. Major and Mark Gadzikowski suggested:
Insight Design's MacPrint or GDT Softwork's PowerPrint. It is a
combination of a software and cable
(hardware) solution that allows printing from a serial port on a Mac to the
parallel port on a printer.

Greetings.
I posted this question to the Eudora mailing list, but I got a canned (and
useless) response.
Basically, with my last ISP account (about a year ago), each time I'd send
or recieve a message, it would give a date in the "Date" column. Now it
gives either a day ('Saturday'; which Saturday?!?) or a time ('10:11 AM
-0800'), but not the date I prefer ('12-29-96').
I can't find anything in the Help menu, either.
Any clues?

Someone tell me WHY!!
I have been going to different Super computer stores and not one
had a
powerbook to try. All they had were PC notebooks. When I was at these
stores I asked the so-called salesperson where are the Macintosh
Powerbooks ? He replied "We don't sell enough of them to stock 'em".
This was at Computer City, Incredible Universe,Circuit City and Future
Shop. I want to show our computer technician a few tricks that you can
do using Apple Share. The only place I can think of that would have a
PowerBook is The University of Utah but that would not do me any good if
I wanted to purchase the machine. This is an outrage that these so
called Super Stores can't stock a few PowerBooks so the customers can
look at both PC and Mac's. Do these stores get more money by selling or
"pushing" a brand name like Compaq and there is just not enough profit
to sell Mac's ?

You can compose your document in ClarisWorks, then save it as a
SimpleText file, and your graphics will be intact (though the text
formatting may be screwed up). Other word processors that use XTND
filters may be able to do the same thing.

Here's the manual way.
Create your SimpleText document. Everywhere you want to put a picture,
type option-space on a line by itself. Type a bunch of blank lines after
it [enough to accommodate the picture]. Save the document.
Open the document in ResEdit or Resorceror. Paste your pictures into the
resource fork of the document. Number them in the order in which they are
to appear, starting at 1000 [the first picture should be ID 1000, the
second ID 1001, etc.]. Save the document.
Open the document in SimpleText again, and adjust the number of blank lines
you've allotted to each picture so the text doesn't overlap them.
Save the document, then change the filetype from "TEXT" to "ttro".
There used to be a utility called "TeachTextMaker" which made this process
much less icky. I can't find that program in the info-mac archive anymore.
Maybe something has taken its place.

I must say one thing though, Ben Spees (President

Finally my mail difficulties (espoused in the original post

I suspect I should be demoted to "newbie" for a while, eh?)

It really depends on exactly why it's slow.
If you're printing documents that require large amounts of data to be sent
to the printer, then the network speed may be a gating factor. You can't
make the network any faster, really [you could upgrade to Ethernet, using a
router of some flavor to connect the printer, but the printer is still
accepting only LocalTalk], so about the only simple option you have is to
examine the documents you are printing, and see if they can possibly be
made smaller. Are you sending big images with each job? Maybe they can be
made smaller. Are there lots of downloaded fonts? Maybe the job could be
broken up so that each job would contain fewer fonts. That sort of thing.
You could turn off background [or desktop] printing altogether. This will
make your jobs print somewhat faster, but at the cost of tying up your Mac
until they're done.
Another option would be to upgrade the printer. Your IINT can be upgraded
to a IINTX, IIf, or IIg with a logic board swap.
Any of these would give you faster printing generally, plus the ability to
connect external hard disks to the printer to store downloaded fonts, in
case you're spending lots of time now sending fonts with each job. All
three of these use standard SIMMs for memory expansion. The IIg has
Ethernet. I believe these upgrades would run in the $400-700 range.
I don't think more memory to the Desktop Printing software will help
significantly. It's probably worth a try, however, as it won't cost
anything to find out
I am unaware of any desktop-class inkjet printers with Ethernet.
LaserMaster's DisplayMaker inkjets have Ethernet input, but I don't imagine
you're looking for a $20,000 poster printer.
rock.

The LaserWriter IINT has a slow processor by today's standards. It also
is limited to the 2MB of built-in memory it came with - no upgrading.
Those two factors are probably much more to blame than LocalTalk.
Nevertheless, Ethernet can shovel the data to the printer faster _if_ the
printer can keep up with it. Otherwise a slow processing printer on
Ethernet will just receive data at _its_ maximum rate, which may or may
not be faster than LocalTalk speed. Some printers use additional RAM to
store additional incoming data while the processor is working on what it
has already. Most newer printers would be faster than a IINT in almost
every way, especially since they will use Postscript 2, which is more
effiecient.
>are there any inkjet printers that have ethernet inputs?
The Hewlett Packard 1200C and 1200C/PS (Postscript) have a slot for an
Ethernet card. They have been replaced by the (better) 1600c and 1600CM
(Postscript). I can't remember if the 1600CM comes with the Ethernet card
or not. Also I believe the Tektronix Phaser 140, also a Postscript
printer, supports Ethernet. The Phaser is around $1,500 and the HP is
slightly more, if I remember correctly.
