In response to a search for music socore editing programs,
I received a couple of answers from net friends. Thank
you very much for your information.

Rob Schilling suggests Musictime by Passport. I tried a
demo version and found it very attractive, because it
enables me to use Miracle keyboard without using MIDI.

Tony Stucky recommends LIME (Lippold's Interactive Music Editor).
I also tried a demo version and found its interface somewhat
non-intuitive. A good thing for LIME is it is inexpensive, about
$50.

There are a couple of other commercial products such as Nightingale
>From Musicware and Finale from Coda. I have not trid both of them,
though.

My bitmap font Hexadecimal displays the hex code for each character.
I have submitted it to the Info-Mac archive today.
It should appear in the directory info-mac/font/.

There are a couple easy ways to generate this. One is to open an Excel (or
possibly any other) spreadsheet, enter 0 to 255 in the first column and
=char(cell to right) in the second column. You now have a conversion
table. If you have an ASCII font (I believe I have one around somewhere),
you can type the keyboard in your favorite font and then change the font to
ASCII.

Subject: ATM 4 woes: 2 questions

My Acrobat 3 upgrade arrived yesterday and last night I tried installing it
on a Quadra 700 running System 7.5.5 and the Daystar PPC601 100MHz board.

The first time I ran the installer all seemed to go well, but when I tried
to open ATM 4.0 (which was installed over ATM 3.9, with the SuperATM font
database in the sysfolder) I was told that it hadn't loaded: "out of
memory". "Application unknown" then quit.

I think there is an init conflict here since when I tried to reinstall with
a much reduced set of cp's and extensions running, things went better. ATM
4.0 ended up in the Fonts/Acrobat3 folder even tho' I had discarded the
copy in the cp folder before restarting, but I was able to install it
manually and open it to switch on text smoothing. But rebooting with the
full set of extensions produced the previous out-of-memory behavior.
Installing from the Acrobat Reader CD produced the same behavior.

Question One: before I blow an evening running a conflict test, does anyone
know of ATM4 conflicts in addition to the ones in the readme file?

Now the main problem. Running with the reduced set of extensions, I found
that text smoothing doesn't work correctly. In two FrameMaker documents,
one in Y&Y Lucida fonts and the other in Monotype Bulmer fonts, displaying
on an Apple portrait display, about half the page would display correctly,
but then "artifacts" would appear behind the letters - small clusters of
black dots. They go away if I switch off text smoothing.

Question Two: has anyone else experienced this? If so, is there a solution?

I mean a solution that lets me keep ATM4, of course. I have temporarily
reverted to 3.9 and all is well again, but the text smoothing feature of
4.0 is highly desirable. I am wondering if the problem is related to the
Daystar board, since ATM4 works fine on my Quadra 800, which has a superset
of the 700's extensions, except for PPC-specific ones and the Daystar
software.

I'll be dancing in the streets if anyone can help with this.

Graeme Forbes

PS:If you want ATM4 you can get it by downloading Reader3 from Adobe.

If you're buying a Deneba product (e.g. Canvas, Spelling Coach, etc.) and
you're counting on a bit of tech support from them (which, from what I hear
about Canvas 5, you'll definitely need), think again. They don't have an 800
number for tech support, they don't answer their e-mail (although, if
automated receipts are anything to go by, they do read it -- or perhaps they
just download it directly to the trash), they don't answer messages posted to
their AOL area... I wonder who's in charge of Deneba's tech support, Daffy
Duck?

Just replace the cookie file with a simpletext document with a few

one, one will already be there--albeit a "phony one".

What you are seeing is the Document Auto-Save function of the Energy
Saver control panel. At automatic shutdown, any previously unsaved
documents are supposed to be saved in that dated folder. Unfortunately,
Energy Saver is not smart enough NOT to create the folder if nothing
needs to be saved.

You can turn Auto-Save off. Look in the Preferences menu of Energy Saver.

1.3 is still the newest version.

To stop the weekly "Your version of Gatekeeper is old" alert:

(1) Open a COPY of the Gatekeeper system extension in ResEdit.
(2) Open the INIT resource.
(3) Open ID #1.
(4) Search (Command-H) for offset 08EE. It should contain the code 6200.
The entire line should look as follows: 0008E8 3380 B0AE FEDE 6200
(5) Change the 6200 to 6000.
(6) Save & Quit ResEdit.

Well, if you want to print all grey's levels (265) on paper, you must
simulate the grey *retinando*. Then increasing or decreasing the presence
of points in an area we are mistaken the eye doing believe that there is
the grey and not of the points.

This is the formula for halftone level:

2
Halftone level = (int.(dpi printer/halftone frequency in lpi) )+1

For the sake of disk space, it might be done as aliases. Also, only
certain directories will need to be filtered for this, such as
applications, extensions, etc. Most of the art and sound files are not

Apple Personal Diagnostic is a commercial utility. As far as I know,
Apple does not make it available on the internet, nor does it bundle it

Subject: modem will not run correctly at higher port speed

I used to use my Supra 288 modem with a port speed of 115 but when I
changed ISPs I was told to go from "cts only" to "cts and rtr' in the
config ppp control panel. In this mode I can only run the port speed at
57600 rather than double (115k) as before. If I leave it at 115k, the
modem will deliver data at 12kps rather than my usual 24-26 kps. I never
get 28.8 as I am a distance from the ISP and I presume it is noise line
that keeps the rate at that limit. I am wondering, if with the cts- rtr
mode of handshaking, this is a normal situation with the port speed
limited to 57600 or if I could without problems go back to cts only and the
higher port speed. In essence, I do not really have much of a clue as to
the meaning of said terminology and how that affects download rates. Is
the cts -rtr relationship controlled by my ISP or is it a free choice of my
own? I would much appreciate Email answer as well as posting for those
others equally in the dark. Thank in advance.

Hello Ed

I also have a Performa that I experienced difficulty with, although from
the sound of it your grief was more serious. After I ran the Diagnostic
Tester that Apple provides free of charge (If you don't have it ask your
dealer or local Users group, or go to www.apple.com) it told me I had a
'bad cache' and to contact Apple for replacement. All I ever did here was
call my local dealer and they took care of the rest. Some time went by and
I began experiencing more freezes, crashes, and unpredictable behaviour and
ran the Diagnostic Tester which said things were OK, although as I have
since discovered, the Diagnostic Tester may fail to detect Logic Board
problems under some circumstances. I called my dealer again, who had me
call Apples Support line and after being in front of my machine while
talking to the representative who had me go through numerous tests and
checks I was told to take the machine in. It took about 20 minutes. At
first I was a bit miffed but realized that many incorrect uses of software
can cause similar problems to hardware problems.

Oviously Apple doesn't want to send a flood of users to their dealer to
find out it was solvable at home, so I can appreciate them taking
precautions but obviously your situation is much more extreme and from the
sound of it a breakdown in communication between yourself, your dealer in
Hawaii and Apple itself. This is not to say that you aren't being clear on
your complaint or problem, just that when more people get involved the
easier it is for one piece of vital information to not be passed along. If
it were me I would talk to your dealer in Hawaii asking for
(read-demanding) their cooperation in contacting Apple for confirmation of
the necessary repairs, especially since the dealer says the part is in
stock![email protected] In my situation it took less than 5 working
days for my dealer to bring the part in and install it, re-format the hard
drive and re-install the System Software, providing me with a computer I am
happy with. Actually I am surprised that your dealer hasn't offered better
support based on what you have written. My experience with Apple was a
positive one despite the fact of buying a machine that needed such repairs.

I believe you are calling the correct numbers for the U.S (1-800-SOS-APPL)
and don't offhand know of any others. I sure wish you luck.

Subject: Shareware counterfeits

I was looking for a new disk cataloging program on info mac and pulled a
couple down and two caught my eye;

disklist 3.1 /info-mac/disk/disk-list-31.hqx
catalogue 2.1.3 /info-mac/disk/catalogue-213.hqx

I tried to run catalogue 2.1.3 and was impressed with the interface vbut
discovered it locked up as it finished cataloging my HD (I thought it
might be a clash with QT2.5).
I then moved on to the second program and was surprised when the
interface was very similar but even more surprised when it locked up just
as it finished cataloging my HD.

As they were both disk cat programs I gave them the benifit of the doubt,
andmaybe they called the same routine that caused the lockup, but I checked
with resedit and the CODE resources are all the same size.

Being a good mac user, I hadn't looked at the readme files for either
machine and so as a last resort I did this to see if one program has
superceded the other. One was written by a Swiss guy the second by an
firm somewhere in England, both requesting payment of a shareware fee. I
checked with the author from Switzerland, (the english firm don't list
there email address) and he says that the other program is a counterfeit
but he has no finances to take them to court. I have no way of checking
with the other firm except via regular mail and no way of working out
which one is the original author. I don't want to get into hot water
even if I have my own thoughts on this.
(The Swiss author said he would email me a fix to hopefully solve my
crashing problem and I will request the same from the other author.)

I have heard of people bootlegging expensive packages and passing them
off as the genuine article but not of somebody doing a similar thing to
shareware (US$10). Is this the start of something new?

Alas, yes. Also my professional experience, such as that's worth :-)

Disk Express seems generally OK. I might have excepted it. But I wouldn't
use it any more, my own copy's mouldering somewhere on an archive...

I will sometimes check an old archive and see how bad its fragmentation is,
and maybe let Speed Doubler or something else neaten it up. But my real
point and concern involved system volumes; that advice was really: don't
defragment a system partition! Eight times out of ten, nine times out of
ten there'll be no problems with the defragmentation itself, but the
integrity of the system will be compromised; it just won't be as stable
afterwards. There will be more crashes...

>In my years of computing, I find that as long as you throughly check the
>volume first (in this case, with Norton Disk Doctor), nothing bad goes

You've been lucky, from some of the things I've seen. You're assuming that
the analysis programs such as Clinic from MacTools or Norton will spot
everything that might be damaged on a disk. No... it can be a dangerous
assumption, IMNSVHO!

The special thing about optimizing is: it's radical. We have those pretty
pictures of files being moved about, but if anything goes wrong during the
process it's deep grief, retrieval of the nastier sorts to get things back
again. Life is much too short.

>You are further assuming that Speed Disk was the
>absolute cause of this person's problems without asking him any further
>questions about disk usage, computing habits, other defragmentations in the
>past, etc. etc.

Indeed, I didn't cross question. Causality is complex isn't it. But a HD
which might have gone on doing its best for months can often be brought to
its knees by being "optimized".

We all have fads about aspects of computing, it's natural, computers are
black magic. It's just that optimizing is one fad I've cured myself of....
:-) And B.J., you're welcome to keep disagreeing with this position!

Life is short, unlike Al or Chaz here I pass over a lot of questions I
might well have a shot at simply because of time pressures. And I'm very
grateful myself for answers and responses and comments from folk like
Florien or Chaz or Al, even when I don't agree with them. (Mostly do
though!:-)

>I have never had a disk defragmentation go bad on me, or corrupt what was
>there, as long as I checked the disk for damage FIRST

And your luck may continue to hold. I hope so, because as I've said,
losing a volume in the middle of optimizing isn't a good experience. And
having to retrieve files from such a volume is Bad Time. A related
question here is how many folk one knows who are really, adequately,
backed up? In my experience, such individual users, and many small
businesses, are in the 20-40% range. Thus, where optimizing is concerned,
it's much safer to say: Don't.

then I get a message "disk initialization failed".

Is this a known problem? And what can I do?

Regards

Roland May
