Subject: [*] CDIconKiller 1.4; disables custom icons on CD-ROMs

To suppress custom icons, install this software.
This tends to speed up the Finder by a factor of about a zillion.

To temporarily show the custom icons, hold down the Command key when
opening a folder.

Works "as is" with Apple's CD-ROM drivers (both plain vanilla and
PowerCD) and some NEC drives; other drives may be added using
ResEdit.

It used to work on floppies and networked disks, but I removed this
feature since it could permanently (instead of temporarily) turn
off the custom icons.

Warning: there is one known interference with Now Utilities 6.5,
reported by Howard Chansky. A type 10 Finder error occurs every time
he tries to place an item using the Now Folder Menu feature. The crash
used to occur with Now 5 and 6 too.

CDIconKiller has its own page on the web:
http://www.kagi.com/authors/fab/cdiconk.html

New since 1.3.4:
Now runs as a fake control panel, in order to patch only the Finder.
Updated to CodeWarrior 10.
Updated the docs.

This is freeware, "Share and Enjoy"!

Don't forget to check out my Web pages!

Subject: [*] NetRPG 2.58

NetRPG is an internet server which lets a group of friends
role-play over the net. NetRPG allows players to talk with
one another using a mud-like interface, ready weapons, set
an armor class, have hit points, store online character
sheets, calculate and run combats using initiative rolls,
resolve attacks and distribute damage between players and
monsters, store and retrieve ASCII maps to facilitate
showing exactly where the action is occuring, roll dice
either in the open or privately shown to only the player and
DM, and allows the DM to fudge attack rolls when a plot line
necessitates a critical hit or miss or whatever. All of
these features (and more!) combine in NetRPG to make live
internet role-playing not only possible, but very enjoyable!

New in 2.58:

are highlighted in the map output. if you connect using
Tinkeri View 1.0a8 or better (see www.tinkeri.com) then you
can use ANSI text coloring and the icons will show up on the
map as green!!

Stock Updator 1.0 is a system containing two html files that uses the
refresh feature of web browsers to view a stock page continuously. The
default settings are for looking at a stock page at intervals of two
minutes. There's the catch. The quotes being viewed aren't exactly
real time (usually 15 minutes deferred), but it save you the trouble
of having to be there constantly to reload the page to see the updates.
You can have your web browser view the page all day if you want.

Instructions are included for customizing all options including adding
a link and other things like how fast to refresh. The README file
contains all information including some things that should not be
overlooked.

The Stock Updator system can be used on any operating system
(see README file) and even better than all you've read so far,

Hi,

I need a terminal emulator which is AppleScriptable (what's the correct
terminology here?) or one which has its own scripting capabilities. In
particular, my needs are to have a continuous connection via the serial
port and to periodically save the session text to a file. I then plan to
have an AppleScript which will append that file to another file, then
delete it (or will call an application that does). Any ideas on a terminal
emulator which would fit this? All I need is text emulation.

Subject: [Q] Novell GroupWise substitute?

Hi mates,
I work for the Government and have an 8500/120 (32MB RAM, 1.2 GB HD) in a
building full of wintel machines. The LAN system is a Unix box running
Novell NetWare(GroupWise). Version 4.1 I believe. There is no tech
support for Macintosh available, and I know nothing about LAN's 'n stuff.
For quite a while now I have been able to get by logging into a co-workers
machine to retrieve my e-mail on a weekly (or so) basis. However, as more
people in the building start to dictate/task and ask questions via the
e-mail than in person, I am trying to get the LAN (just the email) on my
machine.
I have the 10-Base-T connection plugged into the 8500, and the computer
recognizes the server under AppleShare in the Chooser. I just can't get
the email. I installed the GeoPort and have the mailboxes on the desktop,
but no joy.
The support people have ordered me the GroupWise software, but it will take
months (at least) before I ever see it.
Question: Is there a cheap (or free) alternative to GroupWise?
If worse comes to worse I can just wait for the software to come in, and
keep playing the same game, but I am so close now I am anxious.

Subject: [Q] Wierd print job question

I have a document that I want to print.

What I'd like to do is n-up printing (i.e., 2 logical pages per physical
page), but in addition I'd like to print double-sided pages as well. So
pages 1 and 2 of my document would appear on one side of the paper, and
pages 3 and 4 of my document are on the flip side of the same piece of
paper.

I know how to do n-up printing (via the standard print dialog), and I know
how to do double-sided pages on my printer (print every other page, then
flip the paper over and send it through the printer again). But I don't
know how to do both at the same time. Is there a utility that will let me
do this?

Lacking this, can anyone point me to some source code that shows how to
write a print driver? Maybe I'll hack up my own solution to contribute to
the Mac community.

On a related note, anyone know how to hack the LaserWriter driver to print
3-up, in addition to the provided 2- and 4-up?

If I recall correctly (I used to own one, attached to an LC II), the
original Pivot LE required a Pivot display card, either NuBus or PDS, to
drive it. Onboard video probably won't work, Radiusware cpanel or not.
Later Pivot models did not have this limitation.

FWIW, although I thought the pivoting feature was somewhat useful, every
Pivot LE I've seen deteriorated rapidly after a year or so, losing
brightness and contrast to the point that it became miserable to use for
any length of time. It grew so dim in 18 months that it hampered efforts
to sell the LC as a system. Again, later Pivot variants may be completely
different.

Subject: Disbling multifinder in system 7

Ferdinando,

What you need is already a part of System 7.x. Just go to the 'General
Controls' Control Panel and uncheck the checkbox 'Show Desktop when in
background'. This will disable the ability to switch to the Finder by
clicking outside of an application window (and on the desktop). This
should prevent your students from accidentally switching to the Finder, but
you can still switch to the Finder using the Application Menu in the right
corner of the Menu Bar. This option effectively hides the Finder whenever
you switch to another application.

Nothing extra needed, it's built into the MacOS. Open the General Controls
control panel, and turn off the "Show desktop when in background" option.
This will cause the Finder's windows and icons to be hidden whenever the
Finder is not in the front (but the desktop wallpaper/pattern will still be
visible), and you can only switch to the Finder by using the applications
menu.

Note that this only affects the Finder; you can still switch applications
by clicking on another application's window. But since you say you
normally use only one app at a time, it shouldn't be a problem. If it is,
there's at least one shareware utility on info-mac that will automatically
hide the windows of background applications.

My configuration of 6100/60, sys 7.5.5, FreePPP 2.5v2, OT 1.1.1, Supra
v32bis modem, works fine for just about anything except uploading with
Fetch: files are sent in huge packets and if the file is bigger than about
60K the connection uusually (not always) hangs before the transfer is
complete and the machine must be re-booted.

Is there a setting in OT that I have missed, or is this a common problem?

I have adopted the obvious solution of returning to MacTCP; not only is it
more reliable than OT (never hangs), but, in most applications, it seems a
bit faster. Fetch uploads in smaller packets and always works.

[stuff deleted]

Well, I'm assuming Apple Canada has acted on the price cuts since
local shops here have chopped prices considerably over the last week.
Among them (prices in Canadian dollars..)

Model Old price New price
Performa 5215 $2199 $1599
Performa 5260 $2799 $1999
Performa 6400 $3399 $2699

Haven't seen any *real* cuts on models other than Performas yet -
but then again, there are not many big shops here (Montreal area) that
carry and support Macs. For all my fellow Apple Canadians, check out the
MacWarehouse in Toronto - 1-800-268-7805. I have no affiliation with them,
but I find that their supply of Macs and clones, peripherals and software
to be impressive. Their prices are also pretty darn good at up to10%+
cheaper in many cases... at least when compared to Quebec market prices.

Pat Ellis

p.s. Apple Canada has always, it seems, lagged behind the U.S. when
it comes to prices cuts, new/updated product lines etc... Heck, I saw
Apple commercials and adverts for the very first time ever last year - and
they didn't last very long either.

Thanks...

The printer seems not to have Palatino as a built in font. Your brother
obviously installed only the SCREEN FONT (a suitcase containing several
items with ONE "A" in the icon each). He should either install the
corresponding PostScript type 1 printer font (if he has a PS-capable
laser printer) or the TrueType version of the font (this is only 1
item with 3 "A"s in the icon).

Good luck, Christian.

Subject: Performa 6400/200 Video Editing Edition

Hi,

I'm considering buying a Performa 6400/200 Video Editing Edition that
I've seen advertised by Apple. Just wondering if anyone has seen it
advertised by any of the Apple distributors. I can't seem to find one
who sells this version. Also, if anyone has any experience with the
machine (or with the Avid Cinema HW/SW) I'd greatly appreciate your
view on what you think of the machine.

Thanks,

Is there a utility to tell the RBG # of a color? Ideally, I should be able to
double-click the color object and a windows pops open with RBG info (and
probably some sort of editing capability). Thanks for any help.

Yes, that will work, too. But my 6100 (7.5.5) has all my optional system
sounds in its Fonts folder, they all appear in the Sound cpanel, and they
all work perfectly. There is *nothing* in my System file (I trashed the
international keyboard layouts). It's worked for me this way since System
7.1.2. It's hard to understand this being PPC-specific--not that I
disbelieve you; I just don't have a 68k Mac for testing.

Subject: The PM7500 VAL-4 problem...

I have a PowerMac 7500/100 with 16 megs of RAM and system 7.5.3. I
remember a while back a lot of people talking about the problem with
earlier 7500's and adding extra cache memory. I've been thinking about
adding cache memory a long with some more regular RAM, so I looked under
the hood, so to speak, and lo and behold, the dreaded VAL-4 marking is
there, as clear as day. Anybody know anything I can do about this? Aside
>From replacing the motherboard, that is, which seems kinda dumb, as I can
get a new 7600 for not much more than the replacement cost. Maybe I'm
exaggerating. Hmm. Depressing. Any ideas?
