Subject: [*] II2Mac 0.9.3
Here is version 0.9.3 of ][2Mac.
][2Mac is a set of 2 applications, 1 for the Mac and 1 for the Apple-][,
which allows you to backup Apple-][ floppies to a Mac in a format that is
recognized by IIe, the Apple //e emulator for the Mac, written by Victor
and Vincent Tan (/info-mac/app/IIe-301.hqx).
This version includes:
- Support for 6551 ACIA
- Support for Super Serial Card
- Support for both 300 and 9600 bps because:
- the Apple Communications Interface communicates at 300 bps by default
- the Apple-][c communicates at 300 bps by default
- Support for the Apple Communications Interface Card
- Disk-transfers are now being sumchecked
Although Apple-][ interfaces with a 6551 acia are now supported I must
admit that it has not gone through extensive testing yet, simply because I
myself don't own such a card. Owners of such cards are kindly requested to
give ][2Mac a try and let me know if problems occur.
I am doing my best to implement support for the Apple ][c soon... Just
looking for someone that can inform me about which port acts as the
modemport, what chip does the serial-conversion and which addresses do I
use to access that serial-chip....

Subject: [*] Mac QB Office Pool 2.5S
The Mac QB Office Pool Manager is a shareware pro and college office pool
manager that can be used with any sport. If you have ever tried to organize
an office pool, you know how much work it can be. Now, with The Mac QB, it
doesn't have to be work--it can actually be fun. It will run your office
pool, much like a quarterback runs a football game. All you do is stand on
the sidelines and say "Do this." and it does it-without complaining or
questioning your call!
The Mac QB Office Pool is a complete program that will do everything for
you from the beginning of the season to the end. It does not merely do a
part of the pool and leave the rest to you, nor does it require an
additional program such as Excel to do its work for it.
All you have to do each week is enter the players' picks through a simple
and quick point and click routine. Then, Mac QB takes over and lets you
enjoy the games! As the games are completed, you enter the scores in
another easy and quick routine. As you do, Mac QB will tell you if there's
a winner yet, who can still win, and who has been eliminated.
Mac QB prints a weekly players Entry Form, a pre-game Master spread sheet
with all the players picks, and a post game Master spread sheet, showing
how each player did, who won, the payoff, etc.. It also tracks the player
standings and player account records. Even provides for a manager's fee, if
you like.
With the various options, you can set Mac QB to fit the unique
characteristics of your pool, whether it is a weekly winners pool, parlay
pool where the pool can roll over, or confidence pool where the players
assign confidence points to each pick. Picks can be outright winners or
winners against the spread and can include a tiebreaker.
It includes options to have 1st, 2nd, and/or 3rd place winners and the
amounts to be paid to each. It also provides for season winners if desired,
with the option to divide the season into as many as 4 season periods plus
an overall season winner. And it permits you to switch to another pool type
or change the pool settings any time during the season.
Managers who have used Mac QB have given it rave reviews and said that it
has saved them literally hours of work with a minimum of effort. But, see
for yourself. Try it out. You can use it for 5 weeks before sending in the
shareware fee.
Mac QB Office Pool 2.5 is a major upgrade which has incorporated requests
from various managers. The folder includes a manual, sample pools, and a
starter file with the complete 96 NFL schedule.

Subject: [*] MegaWindow XFCN v3.1
Note: If you're a registered owner of 3.0, you can upgrade instantly and
for free. Instructions are in the SimpleText file.
This is the latest upgrade to the popular MegaWindow external for
HyperCard. It requires System 7 and HC 2.1 or higher. (Some features of the
two stacks require v2.2, but if you don't have it, it'll still run.) The
MegaWindow XFCN lets you create and manage powerful external windows with
only HyperTalk scripts. It's kind of like WindowScript, yes, but some say
it's better, and it's definitely a lot cheaper.
New featuresth includeth, but art not limiteth to:
* A revamped Workshop stack, with an index, zoom controls, a color picker,
and more.
* Each object can have a script to execute when it's clicked.
* Multi-column Lists, and scroll bars to match.
* Buttons, checkboxes, radio buttons, popups, and text fields all disable.
* You can use the Mac OS control styles if you want, instead of the MW ones.
* You can get and set the styles in a TextEdit field from a script. You can
also emboss their frames, scroll them by script, change their justification
and alter the word wrap.
* Various aethetic enhancements.
And there's even more in the stacks. If you've never tried MegaWindow,
here's your chance. It's only ... sit down ... $20 for new users. I can't
keep those prices down much longer, people!
Once you've purchased it, you can distribute as much freeware as you want.

This patch is intended for use with Netscape Navigator 3.0. It is freeware.
It adds Baltic and true Cyrillic capabilities to Netscape Navigator 3.0.
You will be able to read web pages in Latvian, Lithuanian, Russian, and

The Cyrillic menu in the original Netscape Navigator 3.0 is a fake. You are

Subject: [*] NetStripper v3.1F
NetStripper is a small utility that converts Macintosh text files to DOS
text files, DOS and Unix text files to Macintosh text files and can strip
single carriage returns from a text file while changing all double carriage
returns to singles that are *not* deleted. The program operates with a
simple drag-and-drop interface (ie: just drop the files that need to be
processed on to its icon), using modifier keys held down while the program
starts to choose which translation mode is required. It is also possible to
drop folders containing other folders and text files on to NetStripper. All
text files in all folders within the folder that is dropped will be
translated.
NetStripper v3.1F is a FAT binary. It runs on any Apple Macintosh computer
or Power Macintosh computer running anything from System 7.0 upwards. It
works on PCI Macs and on all Mac clones. It will run on anything from a
68000 to a PowerPC 604, in black and white or colour.
NetStripper is shareware and priced at US$10. Payment is handled by Kagi.

Subject: [*] Pro Predictor 2.8S
Pro Predictor predicts the outcome of each week's NFL games: it tells you
who is going to win each game, by how many points, and the approximate
score. Over the last eight years, it has had an accuracy rate of 65-75
percent in predicting the weekly winners. It can also project ahead and
tell you who is most likely to make the play-offs and who'll win the Super
Bowl!
But, perhaps its best feature is its record keeping. With Pro Predictor,
you have an encylopedia of NFL facts right at your finger tips. It keeps a
myriad of statistics for each team, each division, each conference, and the
entire league.
It will give you the regular season standings for any given week, which
show not only the won-lost records but how each team is doing at home as
opposed to on the road, its record for the last three (or more) weeks and
if it is on a winning or losing streak. It will do the same for the
play-off standings, which include each team's record in its division, its
conference, and the other stats needed to determine which teams make the
play-offs.
It also has statistics that compare the teams in the league not only for
the current season but past seasons as well. These include such things as
difficulty of schedule, best won-lost records at home, on the road, and
totals, most points scored, least points allowed, each team's Super Bowl
record, etc..
All you have to do is enter the scores each week. However, you do have the
option of entering yardage stats if you want to see how teams compare
offensively and defensively. You may also alter a team's power ratings when
there is a injury to a key player.
File contains Pro Predictor 2.8S, a manual, and data files for the years
1991 to 1996.

Subject: 7200/75 Ethernet printing problem (please help!)
Hi fellow Mac'ers,
Recently a problem has cropped up with my family's 7200/75. We have tried,
succesfully for a few days or so, to network our computers and file-share
and print between them all to a LaserWriter IINT [remember those? ahh the
good old days]. The LaserWriter IINT still works quite well. EXCEPT for
output from the 7200.
One day, the filesharing stopped working. The next day, printing.
Completely. Like the 7200 was the only machine on its own network. We are
suspecting a hardware issue but are not sure what it could be.
Here is our lineup:
7200/75 --> 7100/80 --> IIvx (yes really) --> LaserWriter IINT
They are all interconnected with Farralon Ethernet "PowerWave" boxes
(little diamond shaped things, I think they're called PowerWave). We have
tried various permutations of System software on the 7200 (7.5.1, 7.5.2,
and the infamous 7.5.3 SysUp 2.0 rev 2) We are using the LaserWriter 8.0
and/or LaserWriter 8 driver on all machines. Is there a newer machine that
will fix the problems we are having or no? Seems the 7100 will print, the
IIvx will print most of the time (keep in mind the 7100 is in the middle of
the chain) but the 7200 will not even recognize that there is a LaserWriter
on the network at all.
We have tried zapping PRAM, swapping cables/boxes, reinstalling system
software (2x!) and even tried printing with a different program than
Microsoft Word. None of the aforementioned routes have gotten us anywhere
("There is a printing problem, the selected printer could not be found")
Is this a 7200 thing or an Ethernet thing or what? =I We're stumped here.
Oh incidentally I have given up on 800-SOS-APPL. Their staff recommended
with a straight face that I reformat my hard drive. Like that would do
anything.
Anyone seen or heard about this problem and potential fixes?
Thanks in advance, looking forward to advice/replies..

Jeff,
I've tried it. See for
details for Powerbook 5300's.
I have 24mb of RAM on my 5300c, MacOS 7.5.3 Rev 2. I am waiting to get my
PB back from the Apple Repair Program... seems I had most of the quality
problems they reported and when the screen started to split I finally gave
in and called them... so meanwhile my wife's LC III w/8mb RAM, 900mb HD
[total], GV TP Mercury [19.2kb] and 16"[60lb do not set on top of Mac]
monitor will just have to do... and it does it well!. You all don't know
the joy of a Mac like this unless you've had to try to transfer
applications from one Windoze machine to another... which I did from my PB
5300 to her LC [we're both running 7.5.3 rev 2 and OT 1.1] and I'm a
consultant & instructor for both platforms.. actually three if you count
IBM's OS/2.
In any case, I'm really not sure 8mb can run the System AND the Speech
Recognition at the same time. Occasionally when I'm running all my *normal*
applications speech recognition will stop listening because I've used up
all available RAM with the 6 or 7 applications I am running. When I get my
PB back I can tell you in more detail what it takes.
I really do like it. It seems to perform well on the 5300c. I have to
remember to speak normally when addressing the computer. I like the CB
method... hold down a key when I want it to listen. I am just becoming
aquainted with AppleScript - which is where the Speech seems to be
integrated with. You can build anything you want with AppleScript (provided
the apps you have are capable) and use Speech Recognition to tell them (or
the finder) what to do. Powerful! I'm thinking of all the things I do now
manually and turning them into scripts that I can then give verbal commands
too. Simply checking my e-mail(s), copy & paste, etc... and such are
examples. That would free up my hands to do more original chores... such as
typing this!

the final results, you can check out my home page. The toolbar on the

I used to add a patch (available on the info-mac archives) that would add a
window for n-up layout to the print dialog. I cannot figure out what
possessed Apple to implement this idea on their own in such a pessimal
manner. Meanwhile, it also appears that they have opened the door to
Microsoft incompatibility again. Excel has its own Page Setup dialog, and
I have discovered that, under 8.4, I can no longer tell Excel to switch
between portrait and landscape page layouts. Has anyone else encountered
this problem? Does anyone have a good work-around (like connect to a
different printer, make the changes there, save the file with those
changes, and go back to 8.4 ... yuck)?

If they were told, would they pay attention? Apple seems a lot less
sensitive to user input than they used to be. So how do we direct input to
Apple in a manner which is likely to have some productive impact?

Subject: Multiple accounts.Open Transport
Collective wisdom:
I am helping a client with 'net support. He is running Open Transport and
*believes* he can configure his Internet connection for more than one
account (on more than one server). Unfortunately I have not had any
experience (yet) using O.T. (still hanging on to that vintage LC II and pre
sys-7.5). Is this true and if so, can anyone shed some light on the
process of doing it. I know that FreePPP has that multiple PPP account
feature, but it seems there is only one MacTCP setting.
Thanks in advance for any and all help.

Subject: Now Startup Manager 7.0
As always, results may vary. I've been using Now Startup Manager 7.0 with
no problems, other than a minor glitch when I restarted after the
installation. I got a message that there was insufficient memory to load
all my extensions, topped off by a bus error.
Restarting and holding the space bar down allowed me to select a
different set of extensions. (NSM was trying to load every last
extension, but not RamDoubler, not a swell idea with only 8 MB of RAM.)
Since then, everything has been fine.

Subject: Scripting commands to running apps...
While connected to work, I would like to automatically send a periodic
command to the system to which I am connected via Zterm. An emulation
of manual input at the keyboard, it would check mail status, and
hopefully alert me with an alarm if I could get it to react to what was
returned in response to the command.
Anything like this been done? Doable? AppleScript?

Subject: SuperBoomerang and System 7.5.3
For years I enjoyed using SuperBoomerang and always wondered why the Mac
system didn't just incorporate its main features. Then I had to abandon it
because of system conflicts. Now I'm using System 7.5.3 and wondering
whether it's worth upgrading to the current version of SuperBoomerang. I
would appreciate reports on its current stability, and any notable
conflicts.
And no, Default Folder doesn't do everything I want; and besides when I
downloaded the latest version to try it out it told me I had owned it for
30 days and it was time to pay up even though I had acquired it just an
hour before.

Subject: SupraFaxModem 288/366 and an LC575 as a fax machine
This modem, and I am sure many others, have the ability to discern
whether a call if voice or fax and answer only when it is a fax.
Is it feasible to have the computer on all the time in this scenario?
Probably one would need to turn the screen off (but you can't do that
with a 575) alternatively you would turn make the screen dim (black).
Would that not draw too much power?
On the other hand, what if you left the machine to go into its
"sleep" mode, where the screen is dimmed and it beeps a few times
until it "warms" up, when you touch the keyboard or click the mouse.
Would the software with the Supra be quick enough to be enabled
in time to answer the incoming fax?
I have heard that powerbooks in their sleep mode aren't fast enough
to spin up the hard drive and process the fax.
Some have said that power macs on the other hand seem to be quick
enough to do this.
What is your experience/advice?
Thanks in advance,

Does anyone know what happened to Now Fun!? I asked Now Software about
it, but the only information they had was that they sold it to "Nova

because a search for Nova Development turns up a Wintel software
company. Does anyone know what happened to the package?

Subject: Why continue to Binhex?
The original question was as the subject says. So why then does Mac =
community still use BinHex, whereas in PC/Unix communities base64-type =
encodings are done away with in ftp transfers? It seems that little bits =
of code tucked into the resource fork of .sit files, however containing =
vital infos, do not constitute the necessity to BinHex the whole thing at =
tremendous costs of CPU and bandwidth. Defending BinHex because of =
e-mail downloads is losing the argument due to MIME standards. Besides, =
RICE listserv just terminated e-mail download service last month. For a =
while, I thought CRC issue was an important factor to resort to BinHex. =
But then, Z and gzip have CRC checks built-in, I realize. Though I don't =
know if .sit supports CRC or not, the modem hardware have gotten quite =
good in recent years that error corrections are done on-the-fly during =
transfers. Since ftp transfers are direct node-to-node transfers, unlike =
e-mails, this hardware error correction alone would be quite enough. No =
need for CRC in ftp. So, I ran out of any rational reason to defend =
BinHex, other than simply being customary.
(This is off-topic. But why do I get =3D sign at the end of every line?)

True, although if you do that you'll have to open the files manually =
and/or
go in with a disk editor to reassign files types and the like. Not within
the capability of most users...
