Subject: [*] (Serial) Epson Stylus Color printer driver 2.52A
This file is posted to ftp.epson.com on 7/30/96 (named MACSC2 in
MacBinaryII format). It contains only the serial driver. The AT (AppleTalk)
and Ethernet drivers are in a separate package which I will also post to
info-mac. The AT package also contains this serial driver, plus ColorSync.
CompactPro compressed, and binhexed, about 1.0 MB.
To use this package, extract all the files into a fresh floppy disk named
"Driver Disk", and install from the floppy disk. I really hate the "Epson
way" of installation ...
Cheers!

Subject: [*] DragThing 1.6.2, an Internet-aware application dock
DragThing is an application dock designed to tidy up the icons littering
your desktop. Simply drag an application from the Finder onto an empty
square in a dock and then drag documents onto it as normal. In addition,
the docks can contain files, folders, disks and servers and there is also a
option to display the currently running processes in a special dock.
New in 1.6 is the ability to store and organise URLs in docks and many
other enhancements.
It requires at least System 7.5 (or 7.1 with Drag & Drop, AppleScript and
the Scriptable Finder) and a Macintosh with a minimum of a 68020 or PowerPC
601 processor. Storing URLs in docks requires Internet Config 1.1 or later.
The application is distributed as a fat binary with both regular 68K and
native PowerPC versions included.
DragThing is now shipped as an 'Installer VISE Lite' installer, which
allows you to install Fat, PPC only and 68K only versions of DragThing, as
well as eDOC or PDF versions of the documentation. Please only distribute
the whole installer itself, rather than the installed folder, to make sure
people don't end up with half a DragThing!
What's new in DragThing 1.6.2?
* Added option to draw window contents to match the MacOS 8 default
appearance.
* Added option to use translucent dragging of icons under System 7.5.3
or later.
* Added view by name only option in the View menu.
* Added 'Open Location' window for opening an entered URL with the
appropriate helper application.
* Now accept 'Get URL' events and open the URL with the appropriate helper
application (and it's scriptable too).
* Now detect if Aaron is installed and automatically change appearance
options to match.
* Worked round a bug in the 7.5 colour picker that was causing DragThing
to crash with Balloon Help on.
* Fixed a few cosmetic bugs that were really bothering me.
* Fixed a few mistakes in the balloon help and documentation.
* Some other minor user interface changes.
* Recompiled with Metrowerks C/C++ 1.5.
* A beta version of DragThing 1.6.1 was accidently uploaded to AOL by one
of my beta testers. There were a number of problems with it and it is hard
to distinguish from the release version, so I have bumped the version
number up by one for the final release to avoid complications.

The Eudora docs suggest that you duplicate the Eudora Settings file into
separate Eudora folders for each individual. Then each user can
customize the settings according to their needs including signature

I ran disk first aid today. When I went to "verify" I checked my Mac

disk first aid from the same system software CD and it seemed to work OK

Subject: DeltaGraph 3.5
I run a small Mac lab at a public university. We have 10 Mac LC III
computers, each with a license for DeltaGraph, version 3.5.
About a month ago I was told we could expand the lab by 10 machines, but as
we expand we will have to increase our license for DeltaGraph.
Unfortunately DeltaPoint won't sell us licenses for version 3.5 --- it is
no longer available commercially and has been replaced by version 4.0.
We teach undergraduate classes to use the software for data presentation,
so it would be a pain to have two versions coexisting in the same lab at
the same time.
The cost of purchasing 10 copies of version 4.0 and upgrading our 10 copies
of 3.5 to 4.0 is prohibitive (about $1300). Besides, we really don't need
the newest, fastest, and "bestest." I'd be happy with licenses of version
3.5 on all of our machines.
Sooooooo, I was wondering if any Mac users that have upgraded their
DeltaGraph to version 4.0 would like to donate their copies of DeltaGraph
3.5 to a good cause. I expect I could arrange an official acknowledgement
>From the university for tax purposes.
To be entirely honest, I've read the licensing agreement and can't
determine if old versions can be recycled in this manner or not. If not,
then please forgive my ignorance. If so, then let me know if you can help
us out.
Thanks.

Greetings.
I'm considering upgrading the drivers on my hard drives from FWB Hard Disk
Toolkit 1.7.5c to 2.0, as I can order the upgrade at a very reasonable
price through the end of August. I'm running 7.5.3 on a PowerWave 604/132.
Has anyone experienced any problems safely installing the new HDT 2.0
driver without reformatting? I'd like to have the new optimized drivers,
but I'm not willing to accept a significant risk of data loss to do so.
Yes, everything is routinely backed up to tape, but even so, restoring 4+
GB of data would be a colossal pain.
Also, has anyone noticed any speed/stability improvements with the HDT 2.0
driver? (How about the new CDROM Toolkit 2.0 driver?)

I was playing with Cyberdog/OpenDoc yesterday and I was suddenly feeling
very INSECURE...New technologies leveraging many, many new ways of doing
business with my computer... I began to FEEL that our MacOS is about to
EXPLODE into various new paths, both cosmetically and operationally... I
began to FEEL resistance to change... A sorry state of affairs for a
bleeding edge user, but very HUMAN nonetheless... It is time to re-THINK
about this aspect of ourselves. Perhaps Apple is beginning to
re-understand this what with it's new found desire to incrementally
implement even the most major (formerly Copland) OS enhancements... By
contrast Microsoft's greedy and destructive approach will be, eventually,
clear to all ...

Personally, I like WebArranger as well. It's a great outliner/diary/
database/bookmark organizer and more besides. Excellent value, as well,
for the work that appears to have gone into it. There were time-limited
demo's available from CE Software's web site.
(I have no relationship with CE Software or WebArranger, other than
as someone who was very impressed by the demo.)

What's more (no pun intended *grin*), it provides the basis of Dave's
wonderful web-site arranger, 'ClayBasket', which I think is actually
freeware. It's a monstrously complex tool, but phenomenally powerful
I think.

An even more likely problem, it seems to me, is that the system is not
bootable for some reason. Maybe it got corrupted. If it were a memory or
hardware problem, you should get a "sad mac" icom and some error code.
Boot from a bootable floppy and see if the hadr disk can be opened. Then
take a look at the system folder. It should look like a normal folder,
but with a small image of a mac monitor in the center of it. Otherwise,
it is not a bootable system.

Cyrus, there's a really good "chapter and verse" on this one, that being
the Apple Tech Note 134 by Bo3b Johnson. It was even published, in an
edited form, in MacUser once long long ago when we were all young...
Bo3b's note details the startup procedure of the Mac, and notes what is
happening step by step; and therefore what is failing at any given point if
we crash during the boot process.
Generally, if the System folder is unblessed (no special icon) you'll get
the initial smiley Mac, showing the Mac's found workable boot blocks on the
HD. But the machine in question which Pascal was working on wasn't getting
to that point, hence my arguing it was probably the driver zapped at
least...
Mind you, that doesn't mean the System is OK, and Pascal may well find,
when he's updated the driver, that the Mac still won't boot, and that the
System corrupt...
He'll probably let us know what happens.
(Good luck with this Pascal!!)

Subject: My thoughts on GX printing....
In reply as to whether or not to install Apple's GX printing software:
If I were, you I would not install any kind of GX printing. I tried it
once, and it really did a number on my Chooser (I had to completely
reinstall it plus it corrupted a number of my installed printer drivers for
different printers). I just don't need desktop printing that badly. Oh,
did I also mention that it balooned my System Folder to a huge size as well
(with everything it has to install)?
Honestly, I just don't see any need for using this. I keep an alias of my
Chooser on my desktop, so the "trip" to the Chooser to change a printer is
very short. Right now I have Imagewriter I & II, an HP deskjet (non
color), and the Apple Color StyleWriter 2500, plus MCC Fax Print all
installed in my Chooser. I intend to leave it that way!!

Subject: Netscape & Acrobat Reader
Here's a problem that I don't think has been addressed
before on this list. Twice now, when I clicked on a PDF
version of a file while in Netscape 2.0.2, Acrobat Reader
begins to launch, but before the file appears on the
desktop, I get a type 11 bomb and have to click the
Restart button. My platform is a PowerWave 604/132. (There
is also a problem with trying to print a PDF document on my
Personal Laserwriter NT -- I get a "stack underflow" error.)
Is the problem with Acrobat Reader, Netscape, or my CPU?
I'd appreciate any help from you Mac gurus out there!

I am using Netscape 3.0b6. Every time I use it to read the news, I have
to select "add newsgroup" from the file menu and manually type in
"comp.sys.mac.digest" in order to get a listing of info-mac. This is
annoying. Is it possible to make this newsgroup appear by default
whenever I open the news reader in Netscape?
Your help will be appreciated!

Subject: OpenDoc & Cyberdog....
Hi: I've installed both the new OpenDoc & Cyberdog apps from the MacAddict
CD that has come with the new magazine. I installed both with all
extensions off.
I find that I cannot use Cyberdog at all without it freezing; so far, I
can't even get to the configuration menus to tell it the specific
information about my Internet account. The main Cyberdog window never
finishes drawing its icons, (the window where it shows the dog at the
mailbox, retrieving the newspaper, etc.) and at that point I have a system
freeze. I have 16 megs RAM, PowerPC CPU, Ram Doubler turned on, and all
the other requirements it needs.
I have also tried running Cyberdog with all my extensions off in case there
was some sort of software conflict, but then I could not open the main
Cyberdog window at all. It just dumped me into OpenDoc.
Any ideas or suggestions out there??

My guess is that you are not converting the files to BINHEX format before
attaching them. If the attachments you receive appear to be ascii text,
then probably, they are in BINHEX format, and you need to decode them
before using them. Drop Stuff (Stuffit and its Expander) versions 3 and 4
can handle binhex.

I have a Performa 6116. To add more RAM to this computer you have
to install in pairs of two. My question is do the SIMMs have to
be equal pairs (two- 8MB SIMMs) or can you install one-4MB SIMM
and one-8MB SIMM.
Another question, I was thinking about buying a syquest drive.
What is the diferance between a EZ Drive, and a regular Syquest
drive.

I am using FreePPP 2.5rf, Director Assistence II, Click There it is,

Anybody know how to get the Magic Menu not to crash my Mac?

Subject: Windows WordPerfect 6.x to Microsoft Word 6.0
Don't you just love to hate Microsoft... I do.
I have started working at a new company and they use WordPerfect 6.0 for
Windows 3.1 for all their work. Microsoft's Word 6.0 for the Mac does not
have a translator for WordPerfect 6.x but it does for 5.x. Interestingly
the copy of Word for Windows 95 does have a translator. A call into
Microsoft puts the blame on WordPerfect (Corel?) for not supplying one. I
then ask why they have a translator in Windows95 and the person on the
phone again put the blame in WordPerfect.
At present, in order to read the WordPerfect 6.0 documents I must fire up
SoftWindows95 and run Word for W95 to translate it. Anyone have a simpler
solution? It is stuff like this that is going to force me to use a wintel
box in the office and I believe that fact is not unknown to Microsoft.
