Subject: [*] Archie Man 1.1

Archie Man is a simple Application I wrote to help you quickly find locations
of
programs on the Internet via E-mail. I was tired of logging onto various WWW &
Archie search engines every time I had an idea for some software. More often
then not, I would have to wait large periods of time to get answers. Archie
Man
allows me to "Queue" messages to be sent later when I felt like it. All the
file searching work is done OFF LINE! For example, if you were interested in
finding the location of a program called "SpinalTap," you would run "Archie
Man"
and type "SpinalTap" in the box and press ok. Archie then composes an email on
any version of Eudora. A few minutes (maybe more during busy times) you will
receive a list (via e-mail) of places to look and download the file. Then
using
a FTP client, such as Anarchie, Fetch, or Netscape, you can download the
program.

INSTALLATION:
There are no special Installation requirements. Archieman can be placed in
any folder or on the desktop. One must only make sure that AppleScript is
installed and that any version of Qualcomm's Eudora Software is present.

Requirements:
Apple Macintosh Computer
AppleScript Software (must be installed)
Eudora, E-mail program

Subject: [*] Client_ISMAP: A complete client-side imagemap solution

Client_ISMAP is a complete package that includes all the software
applications and text documentation needed to quickly and easily create or
convert and implement the new client-side imagemap HTML code for web pages.

What makes this different than other such products? Well ... not only does
this package include the software needed, but it has detailed, easy-to-use
documentation that will make client-side imagemaps a snap for HTML writes,
both new and old.

This package contains shareware that the compiler of the package *did not*
write. You are fully expected to pay those registration fees as asked by
the authors of that software.

The package itself is "come-by-my-homepage-ware". I'd also appreciate it if
you'd add a link on your pages to mine.

The package was found virus free with Disinfectant 3.6.

The same package posted here, only in .sit format may always be found at
ftp://users.aol.com/kaze4/pub/mac/softw ... _ismap.sit

Thanks and enjoy!!

It may be placed on the archive CD-ROM.

ClipFiler allows you grab highlited text from any application using a
simple key combination. This text is saved in a file that you define for
later retrieval. With ClipFiler you can quickly store text from any
document and look over the information later. This is great when scanning
digests, eMail, reports, surfing the web, etc.

Version 2.1 adds tokens to the separator text. Tokens are keywords that
may be replaced with such information as the date, time, and the
application that the text was clipped from, as well as other information.

System Requirements: Any Macintosh running System 7.1 or later.

Cost: ClipFiler is shareware US$10.

Patch whatever "Clipping Extension" you want. Go ahead and run this on

Subject: [*] CycloPunk's Ikons #1

Hello Maccies,

attached is a bundle of icons which I've been told reflect my
character-colourful with an odd way of looking at things.

The package has been compressed as a Stuffit self extracting archive for
convenience. Just double click on the file and tell the ensuing dialog
where you want the unstuffed items to be placed.
It's only a small file due to them being archived using Alessandro Levi
Montalcini's Shareware IconArchiver. A super app which will revolutionise
the way we move icons about Cyberspace. There is a copy of Alessandro's
Freeware Dearchiver enclosed, which is a drag and drop tool which returns
one's icons back to being folder bound. (Thanks for letting me use the beta
'Sandro).

There is a Read me file in the package with any instructions explained. To
paraphrase: drop the IconArchive file onto the Dearchiver and it will be
turned into a folder full of folders carrying my artwork.

Icon Archiver is now available at all the usual download sites, such as
Info-Mac, Ziffnet, AOL, and of course from his own FTP sites:

software version 7.x.x, 2Mb hard disk space, 2.5Mb free RAM, Mouse, Apple
Text-to-Speech software (for optional speech synthesis)

GTS Multiple Choice is the first of a series of applications
designed to make testing more enjoyable for students, and less time
consuming for instructors. Students will find GTS Multiple Choice to be a
more enjoyable way to take tests simply because anything they can do on
the computer is more fun than doing the same thing on paper. Teachers
will find Multiple Choice less time consuming than standard paper tests
thanks to Multiple Choice's instant grade reports. Hours of tedious
grading can be completed in minutes!

In classrooms with students who are unable to use the computer, or
who are uncomfortable with the computer, GTS Multiple Choice is still an
ideal tool thanks to its ability to print out fully formatted tests and
answer keys. Multiple Choice can also read the test aloud to students
who may have difficulty reading the text!

With Multiple Choice's statistical reports, the system can also be
used to conduct polls and surveys. Even students can use Multiple Choice
to conduct polls of their classmates for yearbooks, reports, and other
projects that rely on statistical data.

Subject: [*] Icon Archiver 1.0.2

------ THE BEST ICON DATABASE EVER SEEN ON THE MAC ! -------

The Icon Archiver is an extremely powerful database specifically designed for
easy icon storage and retrieval. It can quickly scan whole disks or folders and
grab all the icons they contain, including those you won't ever see in the
Finder
and all icon archives created by other icon utilities. Drag & Drop is fully
supported, so you can create or stick custom icons by simply dragging them
around. All icons are compressed on the fly to save memory and disk space, and
archives can contain a very large number of icons (unlike all other icon
utilities which are limited to a few hundreds). Advanced features include
removing duplicate icons, sorting them by shape, filtering them by size or
color
depth, and viewing them in many different ways. The Archiver includes native
PowerPC code and its icon handling routines are highly optimized for maximum
speed.

Even if you hate custom icons, you'll be fascinated by the number of icons that
come out of a typical shareware CD-ROM like the ones that are bundled with many
Mac magazines. No matter what you use your Mac for, this is guaranteed to give
you countless hours of fun and entertainment as well as a much nicer desktop.

New in version 1.0.2:

- The new Icon Dearchiver utility is now included in the package. Pasting or
dragging pictures into an Archiver window can now split the image in multiple
solid-background icons, which can then easily be dragged to the Finder to build
cool multi-icon images directly inside the Finder windows.
- Double-clicking an open archive now selects the appropriate window instead of
displaying an error code; now reads 'ICN#' names even if "skip b&w icons" is
checked; opens an empty archive window when launched alone; more careful checks
should avoid launching crashes when the Drag Manager is installed on pre-7.1
systems; fixed a bug that could cause the "Don't Save" button to be
automatically
pressed.

It's July! And here in the northern hemisphere, it's begun to get hot. So
too is this month's MacSense! In July's issue, you'll learn about Apple's
planned limited edition 20th anniversary Macintosh, MacOS 7.5.3 Revision 2
for PowerBooks and PCI Macs, the new LaserWriter 12/640PS and RAM Doubler
1.6.2a. Did you know about ResEdit 3, LaserWriter 8.4 or Netscape 4? Read
all about it in our new occasional section entitled "In the Pipeline!" Also
in this issue: Jim Hines considers the prevalence of URLs in advertising;
The Game Warden speaks lovingly of E3; Cerebreality considers the demise of
Gen X and the subsequent generational title; and Chris McVeigh pops the
glossy media bubble surrounding the Pippin platform.

MacSense: The Macintosh=AE E-Zine is a FREE monthly electronic magazine whic=
h
focuses on the mainstream Macintosh computer market. Each issue of MacSense
details the most significant news stories in the world of Macintosh
computing and explores how these new developments will affect every-day Mac
users. Packed with vibrant color graphics and in depth product reviews, it
is the founding goal of MacSense to shed light on a rapidly evolving
industry. Moreover, because MacSense is created and distributed
electronically, it is the most environmentally friendly method of
publishing. We hope you enjoy this issue!

The color edition of MacSense requires a Macintosh with at least 16 shades

Subject: [*] MatrixHelper 1.3 Demo - Performing Various Matrix Operations

Matrix Helper is an application to help with basic matrix
operations like inverting, row-reducing, solving a system of
linear equations and more...
The application utilizes several features including:
* dynamic memory allocation, allowing the user to enter a
large matrix depending on the amount of RAM allocated to the
application.
* Improved solver for a system of equations using
Gauss-Jordan method with full pivoting to handle
ill-conditioned matrices.
* Ability to read/write large matrices that the application
would not be able to display in the application's window.
* Display matrix in main and console windows, so the user
can copy the numbers as text right out of the visible part
of the console window.
* Straight-forward user interface.

Version 1.3 adds PowerPC support and a better console
interface thanks to CodeWarrior SIOUX library.

Version 1.2 fixes a loop when trying to open a file and
selecting cancel.

Version 1.1 fixes a minor bug that caused the determinant to
be zero if some of the diagonal numbers were very small.
Other additions include three options to view numbers, e.g.
3.20e-2 or 0.032 or 0.032000, and better console display.

This demo version is limited to 3x3 matrices. The full
version is limited by available RAM. It is shareware with a
$10 fee.

Please include your e-mail address if applicable. Please
circulate and distribute this demo version.

This application can be included on the archive's CD-ROM

Subject: [*] PrinterSwitch 1.1 Beta 1

PrinterSwitch is a control panel/system extension that allows you to
easily select among many different printers when you print documents in
your applications. It eliminates the need to use the Chooser to select a
printer.

PrinterSwitch appears right when you need it; when you select Print or
Page Setup from any program. No need to memorize hot key sequences! It
can also be activated by a convenient Control Strip Module.

The printer status display will show you if a printer is busy or out of
paper... BEFORE you print!

It knows about LaserWriter 7 and 8 PPD files and makes sure to use the
proper PPD for each printer, eliminating a common source of Postscript
printing errors.

It's LaserWriter 8.4-friendly, complementing the advanced features of the
LW 8.4 driver with extra functionality (switch between drivers, not just
printers)

This is BETA software. It will expire on July 31, 1996. The latest
"release"
version is 1.0.4.

Changes in PrinterSwitch 1.1 beta 1:

* All the features of PrinterSwitch 1.0.4, plus:
* Printer files are now renameable, and the names show up in the printer
list
* Printer status display for networked printers
* Now supports multiple PPD files for a single printer

For more information, please visit the Brookline Software web site:

http://www.brooklinesw.com/

PrinterSwitch 1.1 beta 1 does not supercede any other versions of
PrinterSwitch.

Subject: [*] ProFont Distribution 2.1

This is version 2.1 of the ProFont Distribution. ProFont is a monospaced
font whose 9 pt size is similar to Monaco 9 but with improved readability.
It includes slashed zeros, ells with serifs, emphasized punctuation, etc.
It is a great font for programmers and anyone else who needs a monospaced
font with easily distinguished characters.

New since the 2.0 release are:

- a new feature in Monaco Tuner which lets you "resize" Monaco 9,
- a workaround for a crash which could occur with Monaco Tuner 1.0
related to Power Macs and Desk Accessories,
- note: there are no changes to the fonts in the 2.1 release.

New since the 1.2 release are:

- modifications to the shapes of several characters for even better
readability,
- a 7 pt bitmap version of ProFont,
- an ISOLatin1 encoded version of ProFont,
- a new Control Panel called "Monaco Tuner" which simplifies the sub-
stitution of Monaco by ProFont (or another font) and replaces version
1.2's complex installation instructions for "ProFont(Monaco)", and
- a suitcase containing the 9 pt size of version 1.2 of ProFont.

ProFont Distribution 2.1 includes bitmap and outline (both TrueType and
Adobe Type 1) versions of ProFont and ProFontISOLatin1 and (finally!)
simple instructions for arranging to see ProFont 9 wherever Monaco 9 would
otherwise be seen.

I give permission for this submission to be included on the Info-Mac CD-ROM.

Enjoy ProFont!

SetDateTime enables you to maintain synchronized Macintosh clocks on an
AppleTalk network that has an AppleShare or AFP conformant file server on
it. It is intended to be used in a public lab environment, where users
often mess around with the date and time settings of the Macintosh clock.

SetDateTime can run on the users' Macs when they start their Macs if it is
made a startup application. On Macs running System 7, you can drop it in
the Startup Items folder inside the System Folder.

SetDateTime does a Guest login (or optionally a name and password login) to

Subject: [*] The InformInit 1.0

Announcing the release of The InformInit 1.0! The indispensible guide to
what's dispensible on your Mac and the most comprehensive guide to extensions
and control panels ANYWHERE!

Since November, 1995, I have maintained the PowerMac Pruning Page on the Web.
This site has been the best guide around for information on extensions and
control panels -- it was mentioned in the June, '96 issue of MacWorld under
the title "When Software Dreams Come True." Over the past month and a half,
over 24,000 (!) people have visited the site at its new home on the Ambrosia
Cafe. The most common request has been for a searchable, standalone document
or application which could be downloaded and used at any time. The result is
The InformInit, a shareware application in DocMaker format. Here you can find
almost every init Apple has ever produced, with information on what they do,
who needs them, version numbers, RAM consumption, tips and tricks, and URLs
for further information on confusing items. Use the guide to satisfy your
curiosity about unidentified files, or to help you cut down on all the
spurious extensions that you don't really need. There's even an ever-growing
section on non-Apple inits. Also included in The InformInit is a summary of
Apple information on System 7.5.3, such as which computers need which of the
various updates (7.5 update 2.0, Revision 2), how to best install the
updates, and what changes have been made in each update. Finally, if you have
one of the newer PCI-based PowerMacs, there's even a guide to each file and
whether or not you should have it installed.

Much more useful than WindowShade is ApplWindows. This outstanding Control
Panel allows you to cycle through all open applications and all their
windows - it means that you can keep _all_ your windows open to the full
size of the monitor without having to go to the Application menu -
especially good for small monitors and PowerBooks. If you do go to the
Application menu, then all open windows of every application are available
with one mouse click. You can even set the edge of the whole monitor as a
virtual Application menu to save the "long journey" up to the top right
hand corner.

ApplWindows is freeware and has to be about the best utility for the Mac.
Works fine with 7.5.3.

Right now, I am torn between upgrading to a Global Village TelePort

Hello,

The little localtalk / appletalk network I run, is in general fast enough
where we need it for, mainly printer sharing with occasional file sharing
of little data files. However, I recently got tcp/ip running over this
localtalk line and I have noticed that my thru-put is low. Less then 1K
bytes per second. Even though I realize that there is overhead 1/20th
of the theoretical max seems very low.
I remember once seeing some compression sw for appletalk / localtalk.
(something with queen, I believe |?)
The questions is can anybody help me to the name of such a utility.
Are there other suggestions other then the obvious go to ethertalk,
to speed up my setup? I prefere SW solutions since they are in general
cheaper to set up.

Thanks
