Starships 1.1

This is a collection of icons representing starships from the Star Trek
universe. They were carefully hand-crafted in Adobe Photoshop in my precious
spare time. As a multimedia designer I noticed a lack of quality Star Trek
icons in cyberspace and followed the lead of a couple of my co-workers. We
have created several collections that I think you will be very impressed
with. Check out our web pages at http://members.aol.com/ccmarion,
http://members.aol.com/gedeonm, and http://members.aol.com/talosman.

I have recently added 5 icons to the collection and am currently working on
an update with many more starships. Bookmark my web page or check back here
occasionally.

Thank you for your interest and please e-mail me with any questions, comments
or suggestions.

You may include these on your CD-ROM.

Subject: [*] MortalPongbat 1.4.1

What is it?
Mortal Pongbat is Pong, taken to a whole new level of vicious,
friend-losing fun.

It runs in 256 colors (automatically changed for your convenience) on
any 68020 (or better) Mac running system 7.1 or later, with 1MB
(actually it only requires about 700k) of free RAM.
There should be two copies available on this archive, the 68k version
for 68000-based Macs and a PPC version for PowerPC Macs.

Why is it?
You might be wondering why anyone would come out with yet another
version of Pong?

Well, I'll answer that...
This one is really fun.
That's not me talking, that's the dozens of students at Carnegie Mellon
University who have played it, as well as many people I have given it
to, talking.

Take original, plain vanilla Pong, add the following features, shake
vigorously and you get Mortal Pongbat:

1. Really cool graphics and effects
2. Neato nifty sounds
3. A beam weapon to burn holes in the other guy's paddle
4. Autonomous Mines bouncing around the field endangering your very
existence as a player
5. Multiple brightly colored pucks
6. Pods that block and bounce the pucks, and contain prizes for you to get
7. Prizes (as mentioned above) like: Invincibility, More Pucks, Bigger
Beam, Fix Shield
8. Two person play, as well as person vs. computer play.

How much?
Mortal Pongbat is shareware.
This simply means that if you like it and play it with friends, family,
pets or household appliances, you should probably go to the trouble of
sending me a friendly letter and a check for $20, or anything you feel
like sending.

If you hate it, throw it away, wash your hands, and write me to tell me why.

Is your Netscape Plug-in folder starting to look like your Extensions

What's New?
Sets are now fully functional!!
With that, major changes were made to the Preference file. You will

Poly-Dol is another board game with color pieces on hexagonal or
square grid. The object of the game is to match the pieces on the
board to the given shape. You can slide pieces on a line horizontally,
vertically or diagonally, or rotate pieces.

Subject: [*] Poly-Kin 1.09

Poly-Kin is yet another game with falling blocks. The objective is to
stay in the game by removing blocks, of course. Blocks with 1 to 4
squares drop from top and stop when they hit other blocks or bottom.
The squares can be removed if 4 or more of same color squares are
connected. They may not be in a line unlike Poly-RC or Polybrid. The
squares will not stick together and all the squares will fall to the
bottom. The game ends when the blocks are piled to the top.

Poly-Off is another solitare board game. The objective is to turn all
the pieces into grey. If you click on a piece, the color will be
changed, so are some of its neighbors. The changing neighbors will be
decided depending on the shape of the switch. This simple game is not
that easy as it looks. There are more than 1 million possible states
for the easiest board.

Poly-RC is a game with falling rows and columns. The objective is to
stay in the game by removing blocks. Although it looks similar to
Polytris, it is a different game. Rows or columns with 1 to 4 squares
drop from top and stop when they hit other blocks or bottom. The
squares can be removed by arranging them in sequences of 3 or more of
the same color horizontally, vertically or diagonally. Poly-RC
features bomb, weight and radiation.

Subject: [*] SoftwareFPU 3.04

SoftwareFPU is a Macintosh utility which allows applications requiring
a Floating Point Unit (FPU) to work on computers without one, such as the
IIsi, IIvi, LC series, Classic II & Color Classic series, Performa series,
Power Macintosh, and some models of PowerBook, PowerBook Duo, and Quadra
series. Put the SoftwareFPU control panel in your Control Panels folder
and restart and FPU applications that formerly crashed will begin working.
SoftwareFPU requires a 68020, 68030, 68LC040, or PowerPC processor.
SoftwareFPU is fully System 7.5 compatible.

The shareware 68K-only version of SoftwareFPU is available on America
Online (keyword MUT), CompuServe (GO MACSYS), via anonymous ftp
(ftp.netcom.com, /pub/jo/johnneil), from our Web site (http://www.jna.com)
or from Macintosh User's Groups around the world. If you use shareware
SoftwareFPU you must register with John Neil & Associates. The shareware
version will work on Power Macintosh computers but is not PowerPC-native.
A commercial 68K/PowerPC version with twice the performance on Power
Macintoshes can be obtained by registering with John Neil & Associates.
Current registered 68K-only users can upgrade to the 68K/PowerPC version
for $10.

To register, send a check, money order, credit card, or purchase order
to John Neil & Associates, P.O. Box 2156, Cupertino, CA 95015. The
registration fee for the shareware 68K-only version of SoftwareFPU is just
$10. To receive the "fat" 68K/PowerPC version with twice the performance
on Power Macintoshes, send $20. You can register on-line using CompuServe
(GO SWREG), or by calling (800) 663-2943, or by fax at (415) 661-2944, or
by e-mail at [email protected]. All registered users will receive a special
registered version of SoftwareFPU in the mail that allows the startup
"thank you" balloon to be hidden. Sorry, the registered version cannot be
delivered by e-mail, but overnight delivery is available.

Registration information and a registration form are available at the
end of the "About SoftwareFPU" document or by clicking the "Plea" button in
the SoftwareFPU control panel.

SoftwareFPU 3.04 fixes a problem on Macintoshes with PowerPC upgrade
cards, repairs a bug in some trigonometric routines, and includes updated
registration information. It also contains information on PowerFPU, a new
and much faster 68K FPU emulator for the Power Macintosh only. Updates are
also included to upgrade registered SoftwareFPU 3.01, 3.02, or 3.03 users
to SoftwareFPU 3.04.

It really is much easier than that, you were told incorrectly, the
CMD shift K sequence can not be used with the performa CD's.

Here is what to do:

1) Restart from the CD.
2) Rename you old system folder 'Old system folder'
3) Trash the system and finder files from your old system folder,
be sure to empty the trash.
4) Copy the system folder from the CD to your Hard Drive.
5) Restart and then replace third party extensions and control panels.

Hope this helps.

It's not software; it's a SCSI/termination problem. Usually, the Mac
won't boot if the scanner is OFF, but will if it's ON; yours is just
weird. :-).

Try swapping cables around and using different terminators to identify
the culprit, since it's probably a bad cable or resistor. If all else
fails--or if you just don't want to fuss with it--buy an APS SCSI Sentry
II ($80) and the problem will almost certainly go away. Brute force
solution? You bet. But it nearly always works.

I would appreciate your opinions and reasons about which program you
consider best for sending and receiving faxes using a Performa.

I tried MacComCenter, Faxcilitate, and Global Fax; however, all of them
require a lot of steps. I am looking for a program that is simple to use.
A couple of years ago, according to the Mac Bible, Global Village was
considered the best. Is there anything better now?

Simple... those fields in FreePPP have not yet been implemented!! You must
go into MacTCP (I'm assuming MacTCP because MacTCP ping doesn't support
Open Transport, right?) and enter the DNS information there.

Subject: IBM vs the Mac for table-intensive DTP

I am soon likely to be involved in preparing a small but fairly prestigious
newsletter. I would like to influence the purchasing decision about what
hardware and software to go for. This thing will have a lot of tables and
graphs, but not much other imagery - the readership doesn't care about
wimpy stuff like photos. And it will have ironclad deadlines.

So the requirement is for a DTP package that will interwork as smoothly
as possible with a spreadsheet. It will have to import text, graphs and
numerical data from a variety of other sources.

TPWWAWTC (the person who will actually write the cheque) is suffering an
acute case of Microsoft-induced FUD. The way I see it, there isn't likely
to be a great deal of difference in user interface between IBM and Mac-based
solutions for a task this simple, but the idea of depending on a Windoze
machine for anything with hard deadlines in a situation where I'll probably
have to do all the system maintenance myself is enough to put me in a cold
sweat - this message comes to you from a very low-end Mac, but I've easily
got far more functionality and incomparably more reliability out of it than
TPWWAWTC has with his current much bigger, faster and more expensive IBM
machine. The thing regularly collapses in a twitching heap and has twice
required the electronic equivalent of a heart-lung transplant.

I presume the spreadsheet better be Excel, on whatever platform. Does
anybody out there have experience with this combined with a major DTP
package on *both* Macs and Intel machines? Or some figures on what the
DTP business as a whole tends to go for? - pretty much everyone I've ever
heard of who does small-scale DTP uses a Mac, and I presume there's a good
reason for that.

Any suggestions?

-------------------------------------

Probably an application (most likely shareware). I've seen that font (or
one similar to it) on Info-mac, it's supposed to be an easy way for
someone writing software to allow passwords to be hidden, since every
character looks like a bullet, if that font is used in the field where a
password would be entered, it would appear to echo bullets, as opposed to
putting the actual password on screen.

Yeah, took us a while to work this one out. This is because the Microsoft
apps shared libraries and code take up so much memory. Having virtual
memory on means that the damn things can run in less than 16MB. If you
don't have at least 24MB RAM, Excel just will not be able to find enough
memory to run unless Virtual memory is turned on. Take a look at the
delightful message about how much the memory requirements will change when
you turn VM on/off in the Get Info... dialog box.

Actually, the dialog is partially correct - Excel _can't_ find
Microsoft_OLE in memory.

Incidentally, Microsoft also market a programming environment called Visual
C++ which runs on IBM compatibles and generates code for PowerMac
computers. I quote from the advertising blurb.

"Code Fragment support for the Power Macintosh, which translates to
better code sharing among applications and faster, trimmer applications."

Mmmmmmmm. I don't think so.

Subject: Need Advice With Config PPP

Please email me advice to: [email protected]
Problem: - when I close Netscape after a session I frequently get
the message, " The Control Panel Config PPP Cannot Be Used Now Because Not
Enough Memory Is Available. " This occurs in sessions after a large
download and the Netscape icon flashes alternately with the Finder icon.
If I attempt to re-open Config PPP, I get the message " Config PPP Error
Opening Preferences " I then have to Restart to open Config PPP or to close
my connection.
System: - Mac LC (don't laugh, have sympathy); System 7.0.1; 10
MB memory - 6MB free - 3990K used by system; MacTCP; Config PPP 2.0.1;
Netscape Navigator 2.01
Attempted: - have increased Netscape's memory allotment beyond
reason. Can't determine if this can be done for either MacTCP or Config
PPP.
Suspicion: - could this be somehow related to Netscape cache
clean-ups?
I sure will appreciate any guidance offered! Thanks.

Subject: Printing Problems

Hi Macsters

I would be very grateful if anyone could help by offering a solution to the
printing problems which I am presently experiencing. Basically, I cannot
print out on my Laserwriter 630 (using 7.2 driver software). I use a
PowerPC 5200 running OS 7.5.3 and a Powerbook PowerPC running 7.5.2. Both
machines have 16mb of RAM, with around 10mb free of real memory.

When I go to print, the print monitor comes out repeatedly with
insufficient memory. A dialogue box informs me to adjust the memory size,
however, when I do this it still will not print. I cannot print out a one
page SimpleText document using either foreground or background printing.
On occasions, I can print out when I unmount a server from the desktop.
This may suggest that there is insufficient heap memory.

If anyone can help please drop me an email (at: [email protected])
or write to the info-mac digest. Thanks in advance.

Best Wishes, Max

After experiencing some disk problems on my Mac SE/030 I run Norton
Utilities which discovered a partition map problem. It could not repair it
and suggest to backup the files and reformat the disk. I did reformat the
disk (using the utilities from FWB) and everything went fine.

After caopying back all my saved files I tried to reboot the machine;
however without any success. I got the sad Mac with the error message
0000000F

There was also new chance to boot from a floppy or the external Syquest
drive.

Can anybody tell me what the error code mean and what went wrong?
Thanks very much

Subject: System 7.5 Update 2.0 Problem

I thought I'd pass along what I believe may be a bug in Apple's System
7.5 Update 2.0 (System 7.5.3) installation diskettes and/or their
installer application.

Specifically, when choosing either the "Easy Install" or "Custom
Install" options, if the installer needs to use disk 13 in the floppy
disk version, the installation will fail. The installer will tell you
that the installation failed due to an error and that your hard drive
was left untouched.

This occurred while running the installer with extensions off.

At first, I believed there was a problem with the hard drive on my
Powerbook 520C running System 7.5 (8 mb RAM). After running Norton
Utilities 3.2, a few disk-related errors were found and were repaired.
But my second installation attempt also failed at the exact same
point...disk 13.

My next guess was that disk 13 had a disk error of some kind. But
Norton Utilities found no errors. Knowing that nothing is foolproof, I
decided to format the disk anyway and create a new diskette from the
disk 13 image file (Apple Disk Copy 4.2 format) found on the System 7.5
Update 2.0 CD-ROM.

As a side note, Apple was nice enough to send me both the CD-ROM and
floppy version at my request...I've got to give them credit for that!.

Anyway, the new disk appeared to copy and verify ok, according to Disk
Copy 4.2. But my third attempt at installation failed again at disk 13.

At this point, I was stumped...temporarily. As a hunch, I tried
renaming disk 13. What if there was some kind of weird error causing an
invisible character of some kind to be present in the disk name on the
original master floppy AND in the disk 13 image file on the CD-ROM?

After deleting the existing disk name I re-typed the original disk
name, "System 7.5 Update 2.0 - 13" and it worked! My fourth
installation attempt went smoothly after I renamed that diskette.

By the way, the CD-ROM version of the update installer worked without a
glitch on my Power Mac 7100/66 (16 mb RAM; ran installer with extensions
off).

So...I don't know if I'm the only one to have run into this problem or
not, but I thought others might be interested to know about this problem
that I've run into.

[I think it is safe to say this is a "true" rumor now. I've seen notes about
it in tidbits as well as on comp.sys.mac.announce this morning. Note that
disinfectant will remove this virus (MDEF-B, I think). You can find it in

If anyone is using both MS Word 5.1a and a QMS printer (preferably a

feature. I can't figure out a software/hardware settings configuration
that allows for envelopes to print correctly when printed from this
feature. I've resorted to using one of the old envelope templates
provided, but the Envelopes feature is handier and more elegant.to use.

Hello,

Thanks to Jim Yarrow of the Orange County Register and all of the other
people who responded to my question on the US Robotics modem. I did get it
to work with my PowerMac 7500 by changing the DIP switches as Jim suggested.

In case anyone missed his suggestion, here it is.

To use a US Robotics Sportster Modem (PC kind not Mac & Fax) on a Mac.

set DIP switches 1,3,5,7 and 8 in the Down (On) position. If you require
auto-answer, leave DIP switch 5 in the UP (Off) position. You will also need

a 'hardware handshaking' cable.

Many people also suggested using specific init strings. This was not
necessary for me. Changing the DIP swithces did the trick. Modem works like
a charm now.

Thanks again,

Jody Schraden
