Subject: [*] MacSense May 1996
MacSense May 1996. Volume 3, Issue 3.
Apple's going to post a $700 million dollar loss for this quarter--and it's
actually a good thing! Find out why in May's MacSense!
May's issue is busting at the seams! This month we introduce a new feature
to help readers activate embedded URLs without having to copy and paste!
(For more details, see below.) Open MacSense and learn all about Apple's
new direction, the MessagePad 130, two new StyleWriters and a low-cost
Color OneScanner. A trip through our 'Bits sections will teach you about
Apple's new VP, The HP ScanJet 4P, Macromedia Director 5, Shockwave,
Netscape Navigator 3 beta and much more. This month, John Nemerovski has
left his Brave New World, and his loving wife fills in. Jim Hines muses
about Apple's tenacity for self abuse, the Game Warden looks high and low
for Mac sports games, and Cerebreality considers the reality of flame wars.
May's issue also offers a System 7.5 Update 2.0 Special Report to help get
you up to speed with the new update. We've also got reviews of Claris
Emailer 1.0v3, Eudora Pro, The Black Box, You Don't Know Jack and Total
Distortion. Finally, Editor in Chief Chris McVeigh eyes Microsoft's efforts
with Internet Explorer--and fears for Netscape.
All MacSense readers who use Netscape will be pleased to see our new
"Launch URL" feature. In AppleBits, QuickBits and NetBits, you'll now find
a URL-launching button adjacent to stories which include URLs. To use,
simply make sure your Netscape application is open and connected to the
Internet. Then, from within MacSense, click on the desired URL button.
MacSense: The Macintosh=AE E-Zine is a FREE monthly electronic magazine whic=
h
focuses on the mainstream Macintosh computer market. Each issue of MacSense
details the most significant news stories in the world of Macintosh
computing and explores how these new developments will affect every-day Mac
users. Packed with vibrant color graphics and in depth product reviews, it
is the founding goal of MacSense to shed light on a rapidly evolving
industry. Moreover, because MacSense is created and distributed
electronically, it is the most environmentally friendly method of
publishing. We hope you enjoy this issue!
The attached file is a Stuffit archive. You will need Stuffit Expander or
another Stuffit compression utility to extract it.
The color edition of MacSense requires a Macintosh with at least 16 shades
of grey. For optimal viewing, we recommend 16-bit color. The black and
white edition of MacSense can be viewed on any Macintosh.

Subject: [*] Meditor EPSILON TR3 - A test run of FREE tracker
Meditor is a tracker, or a module music editor/player.
Unlike the most trackers in the world, Meditor features an interface
that is a lot more "Macintosh".
Currently, Meditor supports MOD, MTM, S3M, XM, and MMF modules.
Since this version of Meditor is a Test Run, not all the functions are
completed. So, please take your time and explore Meditor to find out what
you can do. A complete manual will be available by the release of final
Meditor EPSILON.
Meditor requires 68020 or better CPU, System 7 or higher, and at least
2MB of free memory. Stereo speakers/headphones are recommended.
FREEWARE. Please ask me for permission if you want to put it in any
media that you are going to publish.
Enjoy module music!

Friends,
Mr. Tontata has just posted version 1.2.1 of MIDIGraphy at his new
web site in Japan - and attached is the Infomac archive copy. Remember to
remove the RSRC.J file from the program folder before booting on any system
lacking Kanji capability. Although the manual is still only in Japanese,
the English notes include mention of a future shareware fee ($20) -
although the program is still freeware at this time. Changes and
improvements to MIDIGraphy are also detailed. Please see the additional
upload of MIDIGraphy Profile compiler for the second component of this
wonderful system.
I have not included notes of my own in either upload this time but
expect to submit some text comments on MIDIGraphy in the future. Mr.
Tontata has produced an English manual for the Profile Compiler, but this
part needs a bit of explanation.
Mr. Tontata has a brand new web site. The english language url is

There you will find only brief messages and download links for this
software and its profile compiler complement. Do not bother with the

There is an english manual version included. If you are an experienced

text 'source' examples included in the profiles folder. Making full use of
the profile feature will take considerable head scratching. Note that this
component carries no shareware fee because it is only useful with

Subject: [*] Midi It! 1.2.4
Midi It! is an utility to change types of Standard MIDI files.
Midi It! checks an unrecognizable file, and if it is a Standard Midi
File, it then changes file type of the document to 'Midi'.
('Midi' is the Macintosh identification mark for Standard MIDI files.)
Midi It! also changes the creator of the file into your favorite
application so that you can launch your favorite application just by
double-clicking the Standard MIDI file icon.
Midi It! is distributed as a fat binary. It requires System 7 or
greater.
Changed Points from the version 1.2.3:
Changed the SMF Info dialog to movable-modal.
Fix a improper button behavior in the file select dialog.
Implemented minimal balloon helps.
This program can be included in the Info-Mac CD-ROM.

Subject: [*] MidiJukebox2.3.hqx -- MIDI file player
Midi JukeBox is a program I wrote for the Macintosh which plays standard
MIDI files and provides animated "dancing squares" to accompany the music.
It also provides several options to make it possible to customize songs
to your particular MIDI setup. It can also be used to convert Type 0
MIDI files to Type 1 files.
Midi Jukebox works best when used with Apple's Midi Manager and an
external synthesizer, but it is possible to use the program in conjuction
with other software to play MIDI files without additional hardware,
and there is a built-in MIDI driver in case you can't use the Midi Manager.

Subject: [*] OpenStack demo US
OpenStack=81 =A91994-1995 by Harry Alloul, published by ComposeTel, is a
software allowing you to create easily HyperCard stacks and applications.
This software can be used in total harmony with HyperCard and works on the
same principle as OpenDoc=81 from Apple Computer, Inc.
OpenStack is an object oriented tool, powerful but easy to use.
It can manage a lot of ready made objects like:
buttons, fields, texts, sounds, pictures, QuickTime movies, OSA scripts
(AppleScript, Frontier, =8A), HyperTalk scripts, externals commands and
functions (XCMDs and XFCNs), resources, ...
To install an object in your stack you only have to drag it from the
objects palette or from the Finder and drop in on the current card.
That way you can easily create all sorts of Macintosh applications without
writing one single line of script.
With OpenStack=81, your HyperCard stacks are build in a short time.
All you need is a mouse and you imagination!
OpenStack requires at least System 7.1 to run and a 2.5 Mo minimum RAM
allocated to HyperCard (or HyperCard Player).
OpenStack supports the following Apple technologies:
- Macintosh Drag and Drop
- Open Scripting Architecture (AppleScript, Frontier, =8A)
- QuickTime
- QuickTime VR
- QuickDraw 3D
- HyperTalk
- Apple Guide (System 7.5 at least)
- Balloons help
- AddColor (version 1.1)...
You have my permission to distribute this demo software with your CD-ROM.
Thanks.

Subject: [*] Periodic Table of the Elements 2.2.1
This is a HyperCard stack which offers an interactive look at the Periodic
Table of the Elements. I could go into a lot of detail about that, but
it's just better to check out the stack for yourself. Basically you just
click on an element and you get a bunch of info on that element. Really.
It's very intuitive.
REQUIREMENTS for full color: (all that I know of, anyway)
A Macintosh-compatible computer with:
A mouse
HyperCard 2.1 or later
HyperCard's Color Tools 2.0 stack installed
System 7.0 or later
A color monitor capable of 640 by 480 pixel resolution
4MB of RAM for HyperCard on a 680x0, 8MB for PowerPC (that's Apple's
recommendation, not mine. I'm running it fine on 5 MB on a Power Mac
7200.)
32-bit color QuickDraw (incl. w/ System 7)
If anyone wants to include this on a CD-ROM or disk of shareware/freeware
or as part of a shareware/freeware collection, I only ask that you e-mail
me (see above) to ask about it and let me know, etc. and that you snail
mail me a copy of the CD-ROM, disk, or collection at the above address.
Anyone with FTP access to some of the better shareware sites that I can't
upload to should feel free to upload it and then contact me to let me know.
Incidentally, if anyone knows of a ResEdit hack to override that stupid
HyperCard stack icon (short of making a custom Finder icon), PLEASE let me
know.

NotePad Stationery for Newton 2.0 systems.
Phone Memo helps you manage your phone calls. It adds an additional item
in the
"New" menu in the NotePad that creates notes especially setup to handle phone
calls.
I hear you ask, "Why have stationery when you can use the Calls Application?"
Good Question. Here are my answers:
- I spend most of my time in the NotePad and wanted something integrated
with it.
- I wanted alarms to remind me to call someone.
- I wanted to jump to the person's Name card quickly.
- I wanted new people to be added into the Names app for me.
Lots of loving care went into Phone Memo to make it useful and fun. (Be sure
to check out the alarm sounds!) If you use it, please feed the programmer:
send him email at [email protected] Don't worry, bugs and comments accepted
equally.
Another cool hidden feature: If you tap the check box marked "Call Completed"
the Notepad overview of the phone memo will also have a check mark next to
it...
Phone Memo is free but all rights are reserved by Scott Jenson. It can also be
freely distributed as long as this read me file is included with the

Subject: [*] Quarto! 1.0r board game
Quarto! is a strategy game I copied from a board game of the same name.
The object of this game is to be the first person (or computer) to correctly
declare that there is a line of four pieces, each of which shares at least one
attribute.
There are four attributes: shape (round or rectangular), height (tall or
squat), color (white or grey), and plain or dotted.
Play is pretty simple. You can decide who goes first, or let the computer
randomize (going first means choosing a piece for your opponent to place). A
turn consists of two elements:
1. Placing the piece that your opponent chose for you. If this causes you to
win, declare so now. Otherwise,
2. Choosing your opponent's next piece to place.
If you do not declare your win, then when you choose your opponent's next
piece to place, he or she or it can declare the win. Similarly, if your
opponent
does not declare his or her or its win, you may declare the win when your
opponent chooses a piece for you to place.
It is possible to have a tie game.
Quarto! change history:
Version 0.9b released October 1995.
Version 1.0r released April 1996. You can now:
*Save and open games
*Undo moves even after the game is over. I know, it seems like cheating, but
you
can review a game now, and see what might have happened if you had played
differently.
More info is available by choosing "Help" from the Quarto menu in the game.
Quarto! is freeware. Source code is freely available.

This is v2.0d1 of rnMac, an NNTP-based offline newsreader. Documentation
for the program is available on-line from within the program.
Changes since v2.0d0 are as follows:
April 1996, v2.0d1
- fixed problem with "respond via email" sending too much junk at end of
message
- fixed problem with email "To:" header not set correctly when replying to
an article with its headers not visible
- fixed problem with dragging of subscribed groupnames (groupnames became
confused)
- reorganized menus (Preferences and Text demoted to submenus of Edit menu,
added Transfer menu)
- fixed brain-damaged quoting of articles when generating replies with
"Show Article Headers" disabled
- added simplified(?) "Get News" menu option to NNTP menu
- added support for click-toggling of group settings ("Always Get Full
Articles", "Never Delete Read Articles", "Archival Group")
- tweaked code so that if user tries to open an article which has not been
downloaded and then cancels the operation, the article is not marked as
read
- added wait for asynch send to complete before attempting to read a
response from server (fixes a race condition of sorts that causes the error
"sendTCPStream: async call currently in progress....")
- fixed dumb DLOG item index error that caused the File/Folders preferences
selection to blow up when some of the "Select File" or "Select Folder"
buttons were clicked
- added support for HEAD command (bleah) in place of XOVER command for
servers that don't support XOVER
- added support for selective display of article headers (standard and
user-defined)
- converted help window to WasteWidget-style window
- tweaked code so that articles saved from the article list context have
header display/filtering preferences applied
As the name implies, this program is still undergoing development. With
luck, beta time will come soon, and then full release. In the meantime,

please send me a note if intend to distribute the shareware version of
Word Translator.
This version fixes some bugs from older versions and also includes
improved shareware dictionaries. I have tested the software on various
versions of the MacOs and eliminated all bugs I have found. Currently the
program runs on System 7.0 or later.
I do not know of any incompatibilities with other applications or
extensions, if you run into any then please let me know. Also if you have
any comments or suggestions please send me a line. The program is not
PowerMac native but a native version will be out soon.
The complete list of available dictionaries is included in the manual.

Tim's Widgets is a collection of 'widget' features, none of which merit a

Convert PICT resource to PICT file.
Postage Calculator (calculates nominal number of stamps for a given amount
of needed postage and available stamp denominations).
Mixed Mode Code Generator, for creating NewRoutineDescriptor macros
Translate DOS text files to Mac and vice versa, one file at a time or in
batch (including the ability to rip out annoying carriage returns at the
end of every line that result from bad word processors or Internet mail).
Count number of lines in a text file or set of text files.
The last two features are AppleScriptable, and I've included an AppleScript

Subject: [*] TrueClock? 1.4 US (new version!)
This is the new version of TrueClock?. This freeware should run
on any Macintosh under System 7 or later. It displays a movable
resizable round Clock. A special bonus is its "omnipotent" mode:
in omnipotent mode TrueClock? always remain completely visible,
even in the background: it is not hidden by other windows.
New with version 1.4:
1. fixed conflict with non-movable alerts and dialogs. Safer to
use, but now necessitates a system extension (installed by
TrueClock? itself).
2. now three grow boxes instead of one, allowing three resizing
methods. A fourth box is a toggle for instantly switching on/off
the omnipotent mode.
Enjoy!

Anouncing VSamp : a multitimbral sample shareware program for the Macintosh.
The latest version of VSamp (1.41) is now available which includes rewritten
preferences code and fixes a bug that caused new instruments to be given
random amplitude envelopes.
VSamp is an OMS and Sound Manager compatible program that turns the Mac into a
multitimbral digital sampler.
Able to play up to 32 notes at once, this program is compatible with all OMS
MIDI sequencers, allowing the user to easily route MIDI information from the
sequencer to the program, producing high quality 8 or 16-bit samples with
sample rates from 11 to 44.1 kHz, all configured by the user.
Version 1.4 is a fat binary for all macs allowing up to 16 instruments (8 on
68k macs), each receiving on a unique MIDI channel and each with up to 16
samples per instrument.
VSamp does not require any additional hardware but supports all Sound Manager
compatible sound cards.

This is not a bug. This is feature.
Actually, it's a well known "Easter Egg" in version 2.0 Newtons that was
put there by the programmers. If there is to be an eclipse (lunar, solar,
etc.) visable in your part of the world, then you will get the animation
you spoke of upon startup on that day.

Subject: A simple lock on my Macintosh?
Does anyone know of a simple program I can use to add a start-up password
to my Mac? I'm only trying to keep out the curious--not the serious hacker.
When I'm out of my office, others in the company sneak in to use my
computer (I've got the only Mac in a network of 30 PCs.) It's OK if the
lock can be easily circumvented. It would be best if it was just a short
program that went into the start-up folder and asked for a password. If the
right one was not given, the computer would shut down.
Thanks for you help

Subject: Can't Copy Large Folders: Culprit = Zip driver or SpeedCopy?
I have a 12/340 PowerBook 540 running 7.1.1+Update 3.0, with SpeedCopy
1.0.2 (and hence Speed Doubler, which of course doesn't affect my '040). I
just d/l'ed the Speed Doubler 1.1 updater, but it demands the insertion of
the master disk, which is tucked safely away, so I've been too annoyed to
bother updating yet.
I've been getting consistent errors when copying large folders (say, 20MB+
of mostly small files). Sometimes it's a File Manager error; other times
it's a File/Folder Not Found error; sometimes it's a numerical error (I
forget which number). It doesn't stop on a specific file; it just says,
"The file/folder "whatever" could not be copied/written because..." and
then asks if I want to continue or stop. Attempts to continue usually
result in a hang, and I have to reboot.
I first noticed the problem some weeks ago when my copy of Personal Backup,
which comes with Zip drives, failed to perform my regular backup: it showed
an alert icon, and the Log revealed that there had been an error while
copying. I couldn't get it to work again, so I reverted to Finder copies,
which ultimately failed as well. Along with the usual tactics (TechTool,
PRAM, etc.), I ran MacTools Pro twice, then Norton Utilities twice, to no
avail. The only sure fix was to restart with extensions disabled, but I
don't want to restart every time I need to copy large folders. And since
the problem only surfaces when I try to copy very large folders, performing
a conflict test with Now Utilities or Conflict Catcher could take literally
several hours: I have about 80 startup thingies (most of which, including
Speed Copy, are now disabled just in case).
Hypothesis #1: At a user group meeting I learned there are some problems
with Speed Copy, and that I should switch to CopyDoubler instead. Both are
made by Connectix, who seems to have two hands in the proverbial
file-copying pie. Is there a clear difference between Speed Copy and
CopyDoubler? Which is best for an '040? For a Power Mac?
Hypothesis #2: The problem may also be due to Zip driver conflicts: the
drive came with driver 4.2, but I d/l'ed the 4.3 driver (intended mainly
for Jaz drives) and tried to update to that. Soon, I had some problems with
Zip disks not mounting because the installed drivers were not the same as
the drivers on the disks, or some such, so I reverted to 4.2. Perhaps
remnants of 4.3 remain. I'm not entirely satisfied with this hypothesis,
though, since the problem is just as bad when copying to other hard drives
or to other partitions on the same hard drive.
TIA for your advice.

Subject: Can't enable file sharing
I'm having problems with File Sharing under 7.5.3 (Although the problem
started under 7.5.1). My system is a Duo 210 with a Duo Dock, 12 megs of
RAM, 500meg HD in the Duo and 250meg HD in the dock.
File Sharing works fine with the PowerBook alone, but in the dock (Starting
up off the dock's HD) it refuses to turn on. It simply displays a dialog
box which says "File sharing could not be enabled."
I have reinstalled the file sharing SW twice, trashed all the prefs files,
etc... Nothing. Norton doesn't report any disk problems.
Has anyone else seen or solved this problem?

I've got two control panels (identical except for advertising info) that will
accurately show what's what. One came from DVC Hardware (makers of the clock
