Subject: [*] Alias Dragon 1.3

When you rebuild your desktop, an alias to an application on a different
volume loses its ability to support drag-and-drop. Alias Dragon fixes this
by copying desktop information from the target volume to the volume
containing the alias. Freeware.

You can drop a volume or folder on the AD icon, or select a volume or
folder with the menu.

V. 1.3: Fixes a bug which caused a crash if you tried to scan a remote
volume. Also, under System 7.5.3 or later, you can drop individual
application aliases on Alias Dragon.

Subject: [*] Asset Basset 1.1

Asset Basset tracks your assets (a basset is a tracking dog...). It will
keep track of a wide range of information about your investment world.
For each investment, you can see the tax-basis in your investment using
either the average-cost or first-in-first-out method, the capital gains
you've taken, the potential capital gain left in the investment, the
distributions, out-of-pocket investment, and, of course, the total profit
to date. You can generate annualized reports very close to those required
by the IRS for capital gains and distributions reporting. Asset Basset
also allows you to define portfolios composed of your investments, and to
track portfolio performance. The portfolios may be defined by any
combination of the following investment criteria: location (foreign or
domestic), style (value or growth), size (large-cap, mid-cap, etc.), type
(stock, bond, cash), and risk-level, as well as by your own keywords and
by name. Furthermore, you can allocate percentage amounts of a category
within an investment. For example, if you own a balanced fund that
invests 40% in bonds and 60% in equity, you can indicate that allocation
in the account record. If you then choose to track the performance of
your bond investments, Asset Basset will know to attribute only 40% of
the value of the balanced fund to your bond "portfolio." By enabling
percentage allocations within an investment, Asset Basset lets you
monitor the allocation and performance of your investments with a
precision limited only by your knowledge of your own investments.

Subject: [*] Font-o-rama! 1.0.1

Font-o-rama! is a font dialog box. It's a drop-in replacement for the
font dialog box or font menus in all the applications you use. With
Font-o-rama! you can see all the fonts on your system at once!

It's better than other font dialog boxes, because it's carefully
designed to be very quick and easy to use. It's better than font menus
for the same reason. If you like using the keyboard, you can quickly
select and set fonts using only the keyboard. If you like the mouse,
you can set any font, size, or style with a single click.

Font-o-rama! is known to work with Aldus PageMaker 5.0 and 6.0, the
scriptable Finder, Microsoft Word 6.0, Scriptable Text Editor, BBEdit
3.5, Microsoft Excel 5, and QuarkXPress 3.3. It probably works with
your application, too.

Changes in 1.0.1 are mostly small cosmetic and interface design changes.
Requires: System 7.

Moderators: Font-o-rama! may be included on the commercially available
CD-ROM of the archives.

Subject: [*] PhoneWatcher 1.5 - a personal telephone manager

PhoneWatcher is a personal telephone manager for your Macintosh and modem.
With PhoneWatcher, you can track when your phone rings, any caller ID
information, and make the computer alert you with sounds and visuals when
your phone rings.

In order to use PhoneWatcher, you simply need an external modem. If you
want to use the features available with caller ID, you need a modem capable
of recognizing caller ID. PhoneWatcher has it's own built-in serial port
arbitrators, and is compatible with most other software that wants to use
the serial port (ZTerm, MacSLIP, FreePPP, etc.); PhoneWatcher only listens
to the modem when no other application is using it. Read the documentation
for details.

PhoneWatcher changes in version 1.5:
* Total cosmetic redesign (balloon help is done, too)
* Added feature to recognize and react to individual callers
* Added variable icon flash time for phone ringing
* Added leading 0's in the log to align everything
* Added a ring counter
* Paging has basically been rewritten AGAIN
* Fixed the ever-repeating-page-syndrome
* Fixed my ShowIcon code (which beeped and skipped at startup in 7.5.3)
* Fixed a log saving bug that truncated some names

remarkable complexity
-makes use of the millions of instructions a Mac can execute per second
-creates a completely new form of expression that cannot be duplicated
-creates fabulous moire, surreal and kaleidoscopic expressions
-creates fine artistic expressions

Subject: [*] Robert's Fax Watcher v1.00 (AppleScript, FAXcilitate, Eudora)

I don't receive many faxes, maybe 1 or 2 per week, and probably because I'm
a bit lazy, I rarely think to check if I received one. So, I decided to
write a small AppleScript which does the job for me.

How it work

The script count the files in my FAXcilitate folder and if the count is
higher that the previous count it send me a message using Eudora Pro
telling me how many faxes arrived.

Requirements

I designed the script with AppleScript v1.00, to work with FAXcilitate and
send messages using Eudora Pro within a UUPC set-up. This mean that the
folder where the new faxes arrives in my System Folder and each fax is a
separate file. The script use a different Eudora Setting file than my own,
this is possible because I use a uucp account and UUPC for Mac enable me to
have as many userIDs I want.

I don't know exactly how it would be possible to use a different userID
within a "real" net access (PPP or SLIP), however I believe that it would
be easy to modify the script to use the same Eudora Setting file and move
the new message to the "In" folder instead of sending it.

The script should also work fine with any other FAX software as long as
they store the received faxes in a specific folder in a one fax per file
format.

Subject: [*] SingleNumber 1.1.7

Single Number is a puzzle game for one player, specifically, one
who is familiar with puzzle books or with the games found in the
puzzle pages of weekly magazines.
In this program, mac shows puzzles which the player solves.

Numbers (1-9) are given in several cells in the 9x9 matrix. Decide
the rest according to the following restrictions: "Each number (1-9)
should appear only once in the 9 cells of each vertical line, horizontal
line, and 3x3 matrix surrounded by the thicker boundary."

v1.1.7
-Improved the puzzle making routine. It takes less time to generate
puzzles.
-Improved the symmetry of puzzles generated in the Master Level.
v1.1.6
-Can preview puzzles both in "file open" and "book go to" dialogs.
-In addition to the "full" version, I prepared a "light" version for
those old macs like SE.

Subject: [*] Startup Script 2.0

Here is the latest version of my free AppleScript, Startup Script.

What is it?
Startup Script is an AppleScript designed for use in Mac-Labs. It should be
placed in the "Startup Items" folder of each machine in your lab.

What is its purpose in life?
We all know that there are some applications out there that are "Mac-Lab
Friendly." Eudora and NewsWatcher would be good examples of "Mac-Lab
Friendly" applications, because Mac-Lab managers can configure both of
those so that users are required to use their own "Eudora Disk" or
"NewsWatcher Disk."

There are other applications which are not "Mac-Lab Friendly." Netscape
Navigator is probably the best example of such an application. Users are
allowed to configure Netscape with their own username and password when
they use Netscape, and when they leave the machine this information
remains. This can lead to security problems and can just be a pain in the
neck. In addition, with Netscape Navigator 2.x, users can download their
own e-mail to the lab machine, possibly leaving it there for the next user
to read.

To make a long story short, Startup Script tries to solve these problems,
and more. The solution it provides it not perfect, but it should help you
maintain your Mac-Lab.

I've had this problem too. I found that the application causing the
problem was actually a control panel - Microsoft (Microfunk) Office
Manager, and once I disabled it, I never had the problem again. If you
happen to be one of the people who actually uses the MS office manager, I
suggest switching to the Launcher or Z-mac's Quick Launch.

Or (and I prefer this option myself)

If you use system 7.5.x, goto the Apple Menu Options Control Panel, and
turn sub-menus ON. Then create a folder in your apple menu called
something like "@QuickAccess". Then put an alias of anything that you want
a quick link to in that folder. You can also put alias' of folders in
there.

Try starting the PB with the cover closed using an external keyboard,
mouse and monitor. This should work. Note: Open the PB cover after
starting to allow heat from the unit to vent through the PB keyboard.

A few quickies for everyone...
1. Has anyone heard of a sound utility that will do something called
time streching ?
2. I am looking for the control panel for the performa's that have
the buttons on the front that will disable those buttons.
I was told it came with the 7.5.3 update but no luck so far.

That's all, Thanks

I have seen a few OT Macs have problems with Eudora Lite 1.5.4 so that
Eudora unexpectedly quits with type 11 error when you try to launch it. I
have most-recently seen this on a 7.5.3 7200. Is this a common problem?
And more importantly, is there a common solution?

Thank you as always. Please email me directly.

The game you're referrring to eventually evolved into one called NetHack.
I seem to remember getting my copy from the Info-Mac archive, but I don't
see it there now. The NetHack homepage at:

has pointers to versions for various machines, including one for the Mac
at:

Other, similar games that might interest you include Rogue, Moria, and
Angband (probably others, too, but I know that versions of these three
exist for the Mac.) A good reference (which I just now stumbled upon) is
the "Roguelike Games FAQ" at:

Earthlink seems fine. The connections are reliable, and during off-peak
times, I can acheive connection speeds on the web at up to 3K/second. The
only problems that I've experienced are that sometimes the phone numbers
can be busy. Besides, the entire earthlink system is under an overhaul, and
I like the fact that they still can provide service while upgrading their
systems.

Since I have an LC with an upgrade board, I wouldn't need to worry about OT.

You might want to look into Apple Script. Eudora and the Finder are both
scriptable.

Hope someone can help here. I'm an Aussie living in Japan and I have

By the way my system runs perfectly after installing after reformatting,
checking disk, zapping pram three times, clean install 7.5.2 and running the
update. Am I the luckiest Mac user in the world or what? Cheers from cherry

Subject: Performa 5210 Problems

Hello,

I bought a Performa 5210 here in Japan (Japanese OS 7.5.1) a few months
ago and have begun to have some problems, which I hope someone can help
me with. The first month or two was uneventful except for not being able
to turn the sound off on the modem while using the Performa
communications software (BTW, does anyone know how to do that?) Now,
however, I have several big problems which seemed to start while I was
using the beta Netscape Java browser. Initially while using that browser
all the system menus suddenly became very small, and stayed that way
until I restarted. Next I noticed flickering tinting of the screen from
time to time and last but definitely not least, major start-up problems
as follows: About 90% of the time at start-up (started happening
occasionally and worked it's way up) the blinking question mark comes on
and I have to use the CD to start up. At these times the HD icon does
not appear and the disk is not available for testing, repairs,
reformatting etc. Then, however, I can hit restart and the hard disk
kicks in no problem (about 90% of the time). When this first happened I
checked the disk with the Apple First Aid CD, was told the disk needed
repairs, hit the repair button, and was told everything was now OK
(...NOT). The problems continued and if I check again now, First Aid will
tell me everything is fine. I've twice initialized the disk and
reinstalled the system software without adding any INITs or software of
any kind, all to no avail. I even copied the system software directly
from the HD to my EZ 135 where it will start-up the system with 100%
reliability. I'm beginning to think there's a hardware problem. If so,
maybe I can get a new machine.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. What I'd really like to do
though, is get my hands on the normal English OS CD and try that. Is
that possible? The Japanese OS uses a horrendous amount of RAM. Direct
e-mail is probably the fastest way to reach me. If any suggestions work
out I will post the results.

Thankyou,
Bruce Boyd

Howdy all,

Just finished upgrading from system 7.5.1 to 7.5.3. I did not do a clean
install of sytem 7.5 before upgrading, but I did turn off all non system
7.5 extensions. I am happy to report no problems with anything so far. I
have a Mac IIvx with a Daystar Turbo 601 PPC card installed. I use a Mac
Coni 10 base T card for an ethernet connection. I am using OT 1.1 right
now with Eudora Pro. I use Netscape 2.0 to browse the Web and I have Ram
Doubler 1.6 installed and in use. I am pleased as punch that nothing seems
to be amiss, as I was expecting some serious hassles. It even appears that
Netscape 2.0 doesn't crash on me anymore, something that used to happen
pretty regularly. Happy computing.

Subject: the case of the unstable HD icon

My fellow Info-macers,

I have a great mystery that I bring forth to all for pondering. I have a
hard drive icon that I have used for about a year. It's a Clip Art drawing
of a globe. Ever since I moved it to my present machine (PowerPC 7500
w/32MB RAM and a 1 GB hard drive running System 7.5.3), there have been
times where the icon just won't be recognized. I'm on an Ethernet 10Base-T
network and my Appletalk Filesharing is turned on (out of necessity). It
begins when I log on to this machine from another. The client machine will
not see the icon. The icon will be seen on the server machine (which is on
24 hours a day). At this point, usually the next time I reboot the server
machine, the icon is gone. Fortunately, I made an alias of the hard drive
to put in my Apple Menu (something I would recommend to anyone) and could
then copy it off the alias and replace it on my hard drive. I have had no
trouble with any other machine's hard drive icons. Does anyone have any
thoughts about what could be causing this in my machine? A great thanks to
any who would ponder and reply.
