The CrystalDesigner Light is a demonstration version of CrystalDesigner and
contains all the features available in CrystalDesigner except the
possibility to import and export data. Yes you can save your own entered
data to file using the internal file format of CrystalDesigner.
CrystalDesigner is a complete tool for building, studying and visualising
all kinds of crystal structures on the Macintosh platform. CrystalDesigner
is an ideal tool for both teaching and scientific studies. The software is
intended to be used by students and teachers at colleges and universities,
as well as in industrial research.
>From an educational point of view, CrystalDesigner will make the learning
of crystallography more interesting and offer a faster way of understanding
crystal structures in general. This is possible through the highly
intuitive user interface and by all different ways of visualising a crystal
structure.
For scientists, CrystalDesigner is a lightning fast way of creating various
graphic representations of a crystal structure. Furthermore, the program
is an ideal tool for studying coordination around different sites and for
studying the packing of a crystal structure.

I've just been trying out Bill Patterson's FileList+ to catalogue my heap
of floppies. The documentation (from 1992) says that Bill was hoping to go
commercial with the program, but the email address given doesn't work.
So does anyone know if the program did go commercial, possibly changing its
name in the process, or if there's a more recent version than 1.0b21?
(BTW, I know there are more sophisticated disk cataloguing programs out
there, but FileList does seem to have the edge for speed - it's _very_ fast
- and compactness.)

Maccolytes,
After installing system 7.5.3 on a Performa 6200, I found that printing to
my Personal Laserwriter SC was slightly messed up. Specifically, it
prints but there is so much extra space between all the letters that all
the lines run off the right side of the pages. Anyone else seen this or
know how to fix it. I tried downloading a new copy of the driver from one
of Apple's servers, but it didn't help.

Subject: [S] Buying an HD from Italy without paying too much
Dear netters,
about a couple of months ago I asked the digest about buying
an external SCSI HD from third party vendors in order to save money. My
fear was that I would not have been able to succesfully use Apple's HD
setup to initialize and partition my drive. I post my summary only now, at
the end of the story.
I immediately received several answeres (as usual
The general consensus was about not worrying and looking on the Web for
an e-mail vendor specialised in Mac products. Some suggested addresses
were:
APS Technologies:
The Mac Zone:
Mac Warehouse: Phone: (908) 370-4779 Fax: (908) 905-9279
MacMall:
Mac's Place:
Computer Discount Warehouse: .
On this respect I thank Patrick Hoepfner, Sinclair Mutch, Eric Wirth,
Tommaso Palermo, Tom Hawkins, Josh Davidson, Pierre Van Mechelen.
A helpful hand even sent me a copy of Silverlining, which would have
solved any problem with any brand of disk... thank you!
I also received a way to hack with Resedit the HD setup and make it work
for any SCSI drive (thank you Dirk von Seggern):
Use a copy of HDSC Setup!!!
1. Start ResEdit and open the copy of HDSC Setup
2. Open the MAP Resource #257
3. In the HEX-Section, in line 5 change the code "0000" in the "0001"
4. Save the changed version of HDSC Setup
I did not test it, anyway.
I began my search on the Web, browsed and asked for some prices. I must
say that only APS technologies answered promptly to my quotation request
(living in Italy I needed to know something more about shipping costs) by
e-mail. I decided to contact LaCie by phone and I discovered that they
could make save me about 30$ on APS. Not that much in saving, but better
save than loose...
I ordered an external (I will use the old internal for backups) 1GB
Fireball from LaCie (319$+78$ shipping costs). Everything very easy as you
would expect; I gave my credit card number and after 10 days my HD was on
my desktop. I also had to pay about 100$ for customs duties, though, but
this was largely taken into account. I was still saving about 30% on what I
had found in Firenze, my hometown (maybe I was a bit unlucky ?). Good.
I unpacked it and fired it, but unfortunately after 1 hour the drive
started whining like hell and stopped working. No doubt, it was a
mechanical failure. I sent a message to LaCie's tech-support address and
they promptly answered, advising me to send the drive back for free
replacement.
Problems : Outside USA, LaCie does refund shipping costs and customs
duties (paying 190$ again
That was bad...
I phoned LaCie. No problems with shipping: I would pay for the shipping
back, they would refund on my credit card what I paid for the original
shipping costs and would send me a replacement HD back for free. No hassle
on this point, this was straight.
Now for the customs duties: Italy is a bad environment on this side.
Everything passing through customs pays, even if it is just for
replacement. I would have had to pay 100$ more than expected without being
guilty of anything. This was a bit harder to accomplish, but in the end I
managed to make them send me the replacement drive "free domicile", so that
they would take care of any charge, shipping or customs duties.
Now I finally received the drive at no charge whatsoever. It works very
fine (also the software, Silverlining, is very good) and I am just waiting
to see the refund on my next credit card bill of the original shipping
costs (no doubt about it, though).
So, what's the bottom line ? Though I believe that usually LaCie or
whichever company ships good drives, you can be the unlucky one, picked at
random. If you are outside USA, you can be asked to pay for the shipping
back of a replacement drive (it is clearly stated in the limited warranty
certificate). I do not believe this is fair, but this is what you can find.
I advise to put this point clear in advance. Shipping costs can be not
negligible. Same thing for customs duties, if you live in a nasty country
for customs (Italy certainly is. LaCie will have to pay 100$ more, and I do
not find it right either in this case).
In the end I must say that all's well what ends well. LaCie people were
very cooperative and kind (thank you Amy!). You just feel a bit in deep
waters in such cases, when you have to deal with people at 9000 Km
distance. But they really made everything they could (even if I had to make
them some suggestions, to "push" the best result for me). It just took some
time, but it can happen.
That's all, folks and thank you again for you help!

It wasn't easy, but I finally have the apple update installed on my 6100.
It took four hours to get it going after I downloaded the net install

The directions are weak and seemed to omit the part about using the

I had to do a completely clean install of 7.5, then use the updater to

Glad I did it so far.

Subject: Netscape 2.0.1
Dear Info-Mac reader,
Solved one problem, another came up. A couple digests ago, I posted
about crashes destroying preference files with Netscape 2.0.1. Sorry,
but I misperceived what had actually happened. Netscape 2.0.1 will
when it asks you whether you accept the license terms and you do,
creates a file called "Netscape Setup." If you decide to "Run the
setup later", it will put the Netscape Setup file in your Trash can on
your desktop. If you empty the trash before running setup, it prevents
you from having a working preference file the next time you quit
Netscape, meaning that every time you rerun Netscape its preference file
is corrupted. So keep the file Netscape Setup in your trash can, when
you run Netscape, and nothing should go wrong. If you need to empty the
trash, exit Netscape, move the Setup file out to the desktop, and then
empty the trash. Put the Setup file back in trashcan for the next time
you run Netscape.
Once I realized this no more bad preference files. If you do get the
bad preference files, delete it, and reinstall Netscape 1.1N or 1.12,
and set up the preference file from scratch on one of those, and then
upgrade to Netscape 2.0.1. By upgrade I mean run the installer again.
Follow the note about Netscape setup above once you reinstall Netscape
2.0.1.
On the sad note, Netscape 2.0.1 does not like e-mail messages with
excessively long CC: fields. My provider thought it would be a nice
short cut to send e-mail in one CC format to all its users at once. It
backfired, and on Netscape 2.0.1, when I went to read these messages my
Mac bombed with a Type 11 error forcing me to reboot.
The message size was over 100k, with 96% in the CC: field.
I had to go to the shell account, clean up my e-mail box, of any large
messages before reading in the new messages with Netscape 2.0.1.
Apparantly Netscape reads in the listserv of the digest fine.
Hope this helps anyone trying to track down a bug or two...
Sincerely,

Subject: New DeskWriter Printer Drivers and System 7.5.3
After lots of diagnosing time with Extensions Manager and calls to Apple
and HP it is clear that the HP DeskWriter Driver 6.0 (and 5.0, too) is
incompatible with the Serial DMA extension that came out a few months ago.
This incompatibility is still present in the System 7.5 Update 2.0 from
Apple. The symptoms are that a dialog box appears saying, "The printer is
not responding. Make sure it is properly ocnnected and turned on. Click
OK to continue or Cancel to terminate printing." But if one clicks OK
enough times (can be in the dozens) the print job finally goes to the
printer and prints. HP support recommended their new printer for PCI Macs,
the DeskWriter driver 6.03 (available at
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/printers/software/dw110en.hqx). It solved the problem
on my 8100/110 and a 6100/66 in the building (neither of which are PCI
Macs). The Apple guys didn't know about it, and it isn't mentioned at the
other hp site (ftp-boi.external.hp.com).

Hooray! For the first time in a week, my office Mac (Q650/PPC Card with
newly installed 7.5.3 *easy* install) didn't crash on shutdown with the
odd message that application unknown died via a Type 3 error. It is nice
to not have to reach around back to the power switch.
I couldn't finger out what was running, much less running and causing
machine death. I did all the normal stuff to propitiate the gods. Nothing
worked.
Today I installed Nuntius 2.0.4, which uses an Apple Script for "response
by mail." I haven't messed with AppleScript and had thrown out Script
Editor with the other Apple Extras I had no use for. Hmm, what do those
scripts say? Break out the old 7.5CD and start to custom-install Apple
Script. Oh right. Nothing else can be running. I quit the installer and
quit my active apps. Then the installer gave me the same message. Nothing
is running, you silly installer! I clicked "continue," and the machine
died. Hmm. D'you think something *was* running? Something evil?
When I think evil, I think Microsoft. No offense.
Microsoft Office Manager? Could be. Try it. Sure nuff. After deactivating
MOM, I got no snotty message from Apple's installer about apps running.
Did I read something somewhere about an MOM updater? I looked at the MS
web site. Yup. An MOM 4.2.1 updater (to 4.2.1b) that is only supposed to
affect System 7.5.2, but let's try it anyway.
I dunno if that was *the* cure for the weirdness I've seen since the 2.0
update to System 7.5.3, but I was encouraged by selecting "shutdown" at
five o'clock and actually seeing my Mac shut down.
Simple pleasures, yes?

Subject: System 7.5.3 & TCP (ahem!)
Regards to Alan, but he should have RTFM.
Had you read the funny manual, the readme file, you would have found that the
Open Transport 1.1 install also installs MacTCP, and there is a little program
in the Apple Extras folder installed on your drive during the installation
called the "Network Software Selector". It makes MacTCP which really is still
on your drive active and de-activates Open Transport. For every mac (besides
PCI-based macs) this works.
You might even get it to work on a PCI-based mac, if you're lucky.
I realize this system upgrade had all the grace of a dancing rhino, and all
the problems aren't cleared up yet (like the memory-losing problems that have
become 10 times worse), but a few minutes reading the Read Me's that come with
it can go a LONG way to soothing the nerves.
Other conflicts that have since been identified:
HDT 1.7.xx and prior conflict with the newest (7.5.3) Apple HD Setup utility.
A fix can be found at the FWB site: http://www.fwb.com
Apple Share Setup 3.6.1 and Speed Copy don't get along, but the patcher at
Connectix site can fix that: http://www.connectix.com
BTW, turning virtual memory ON seems to somewhat tame the memory beast
(massive memory loss) -- not kill it entirely, but reduce it.

Startup Disc control panel always show both of them selected. Since I have
system installed on only one of them, I never worried obut that. Don't know
how it's going to behave with both partitions having system insalled.

This has been the case with system 7.5 also. Using non-apple drive and
HDT-driver. It wasn't possible to have more than one system folder on a
physical volume. With 1 physical volume partitioned into 3 logicals, the
active system on logical volume 2 would use parts of the system on logical
volume 1 (like control-panels, extensions and aliasses pointing to the
system folder). It has something to do with the disk-drivers, I think. Each
physical disk still has 1 disk-driver, and not a driver for each logical
volume.

Sure. After installing a fresh (apple-only) system 7.5 and updater 2.0 on a
partitioned external volume, and changing the start-up disk to the
external, my mac FX remains dead.
No reaction to what-so-ever. External harddisk, internal HD and
rescue-floppy are not recognised as valid start-up media. Restarting with
command-option-p-r to reset the PRAM won't work: The keyboard isn't
queried. Absolutely, totally dead mac. Only remedy is to remove the
batteries. This resets the PRAM and startup from the internal disk is
possible.
I've tried several times to switch to 7.5.3, sometimes directly after the
first restart the mac uses system 7.5.3, but after changing a setting in
some control-panel and restarting the mac remains dead. So no system 7.5.3

I've installed a IIci with 7.5.3, and this machine is happy with it. Did a
full initialization of the internal HD just to be on the safe side. This
machine even runs the Midi manager without problems.
Love to hear solutions for the startup from an external partitioned disk.
Any help is appreaciated. Is there any-one who has a successful external
(partitioned) startup disk with 7.5.3? Disk-driver software used?
Cheers,
Gert-Jan

Subject: Telephony apps for Mac
Am looking for up to date info on computer integrated telephony
applications for a Mac small office environment. We have 10 work stations
with multiple phone lines into office. Have searched several archives for
info without success. As you likely know, the most important constraint
seems to the multiple lines. Can a PC handle the initial switching of the
incoming calls to desktop Macs, each equipped with a single line
application (e.g. Cypress Research product)? Or is there a Mac app that
will do the complete job from the front end to the desktop? Thanks, Kerry.

I, too, have no networking needs past my printer and modem. But it
certainly was slick when the first .hqx file I downloaded with Netscape
after updating came through at 8.5 kcps, on a 21600 PPP connection. After
that, it will be tough to lose OT--I keep trying to better that
blistering rate!

Subject: Video capture boards
Greetings all,
A faculty colleague here at BSU wants to be able to capture some video for
a project he is doing that has the potential to be licensed/bought by a
fairly well respected publisher. He needs a video capture board that will
do a good job. His budget is around $1000 or so, but he'd like to keep it
under that if he can get the quality he needs, at least good quality full
motion 30fps quarter-screen capture. His Mac is one of the new PCI type
machines, though I don't have the specific model. I've been away from this
area for a while and need to know what is available to suit his needs.
What's out there that will set him up properly?

Subject: Weird problem in BBEdit [A]
Thanks to BBEdit support and Meg Zabriskie, both of whom told me to go take
a close look in the Claris folder in my system file. Sure enough, the
Claris folders on Disk-A and Disk-B differed in one crucial aspect. The
Translators folder inside the Claris folder on Disk-A has (had) several
extra translators. By a process of elimination (literally) I've discovered
that removing the Word Perfect 2.x translator fixed everything (although I
don't think it was the addition of this one that actually started the
problem).
Thanks,
