Subject: [*] Asset basset 1.0
Requirements: any Mac; Hypercard 2.1 or better
Asset Basset tracks your assets (a basset is a tracking dog...). It will
keep track of a wide range of different information about your investment
world. For each investment, you can see the tax-basis in your investment
using either the average-cost or first-in-first-out method, the capital
gains you've taken, the potential capital gain left in the investment, the
distributions, out-of-pocket investment, and, of course, the total profit
to date. You can generate annualized reports very close to those required
by the IRS for capital gains and distributions reporting. Asset Basset
also allows you to define portfolios composed of your investments, and to
track portfolio performance. The portfolios may be defined by any
combination of the following investment criteria: location (foreign or
domestic), style (value or growth), size (large-cap, mid-cap, etc.), type
(stock, bond, cash), and risk-level, as well as by your own keywords and
by name. Furthermore, you can allocate percentage amounts of a category
within an investment. For example, if you own a balanced fund that invests
40% in bonds and 60% in equity, you can indicate that allocation in the
account record. If you then choose to track the performance of your bond
investments, Asset Basset will know to attribute only 40% of the value of
the balanced fund to your bond "portfolio." By enabling percentage
allocations within an investment, Asset Basset lets you monitor the
allocation and performance of your investments with a precision limited
only by your knowledge of your own investments.

Subject: [*] BirthdayChecker 2.0
BirthdayChecker is a small and ultra fast program which scans a
TEXT-file and searches for birthdays which will be interesting in the
next few days. If you put an alias in the startup-folder, your mac will
check the birthdays every day for you!
The number of days to warn before is adjustable. In the same way you can
choose, if you want to use the German-date-format
(DD.MM) or the American-format (MM.DD). The header displayed in the
birthday window and the width of the window is adjustable, too.
Also the maximum number of starts per day.
It's a FAT version so it runs fast in both Mac worlds (680x0 and
PowerPC).

Subject: [*] CleanResource2.0; a file utility for developer.
A brief overview of CleanResource:
This program removes all names of resource. To use it, just drag and drop
files onto the application icon. CleanResource can be run on any Macintosh
computer. You need system 7 or later.
Why this program?
Generally when we are developing a software, we give a name for each
resource for identification. But at the moment of distribution,
this name is usually unnecessary (except that you have called the function
GetNamedResource or the similar).

Subject: [*] Compact List 1.1
Compact List 1.1 is a HyperCard 2.1 or higher stack, written by Francis Van
Roie. Compact List can currently list 5 types of archives in the same stack,
namely: * Compact Pro Archives
* Compact Pro and Compact List Reports
* Auto-Extractor and Smaller Installer applications
* MCB.CAT Update files (MacClub Benelux)
* Disks and folders
Compact List extracts the database and file information from these archives.
With this information Compact List displays the files and folders hierarchi-
cally on an archive card. You can simply browse the folders and look up the
file information by clicking the mouse. You can also search all imported
archives for a specific file or folder, using numerous options.
The stack should run on any system running HyperCard 2.1 or higher. Though a
few of its features are disabled when running under system 6. Compact List
can take advantage of a color monitor to display icons, but it is not
required.
Compact List 1.1 US is the second release and adds, amongst others, the
following features: 2 new import filters, an archives menu, fully
hyperlinked help, balloonhelp in all its stacks, report files, bug fixes...
Compact List is available in English, Dutch and French. Contact the authors
if you are interested in a Dutch or a French version.

Subject: [*] Disk Charmer 3.0.1; disk utility
You don't have to wait for Copland to initialize disks in
background...
Disk Charmer is a neat utility that lets you conveniently erase
disks, and handle disk images in DiskCopy and DiskDup+ format.
Disk Charmer lets you create larger disks: you gain 9K on 800K disks,
19K on HD disks, 1.5Mb on a Zip disk.
At least System 7 is required.
Help Balloons are everywhere.
Disk Charmer has a nice, modeless interface.
It fully supports drag&drop.
It supports the handy "Undo" feature we all know and love.
New since version 3.0:
Fixed dragging on a text window (would write a disk image).
Other tweaks.
New since version 2.4.5:
Major new features (for the complete list, see the readme doc):
- Erases any disk (not just floppies).
- Support for DiskDup+ and DiskCopy disk images.
- Checks for low-level errors during read/write, and warns the user
appropriately.
Major bugs fixed (for the complete list, see the readme doc):
- Fixed the crash that used to occur on some PowerMacs (and maybe other
Macs, too) when the Can switch among applications=8A setting was
active.
- The Low Density popup menu didn't drop down if you clicked on its
rightmost part, in spite of the fact that it had a drop-down symbol.
- Fixed the disk renaming bug.

Subject: [*] Eartraining 2.2.1
*** No changes compared to version 2.2, but an additional remark about using
MIDI (at the end of this text) ***
This program is an eartraining program for the Apple Macintosh.
It helps you to practice intervals, chords, scales and perfect pitch.
You can use either the Mac itself or MIDI* for sound output.
A statistics shows you which answers were right and which weren't.
For more information please read "About Eartraining" and just check out the
program yourself. I hope you'll enjoy it!
*You need OMS 2.0 or higher (from Opcode, e.g. at http://www.opcode.com) to
use MIDI.
*** Use of MIDI is limited if you don't register! You're gonna be able to
check it out, but it won't run infinitely. If you're not planning to
register, you might not want to download OMS since it's really big! ***

Subject: [*] Euphoria 1.5
Euphoria! is designed to help out anybody who has to administer a
network and is using Eudora as their Internet e-mail solution.
Euphoria! allows a user to set their real name, and their userID, and
it will make up a new Eudora Folder using these settings that the user
can use to check their mail.
Euphoria! works better than just a simple script in that it can be
used in conjunction with At Ease, and works with or without
AppleScript for users with memory restraints.
It is scriptable and is also set up for naive users in that it has
AppleGuide.
Version 1.5 cleans up some bugs in 1.0 and makes it even easier for
users to set up email accounts.

Subject: [*] IconSpeller 1.0
It is with great pleasure that I am submitting my IconSpeller shareware
for possible inclusion in the various macintosh archives.
IconSpeller is an educational program, it is simple and fun to use. The
program displays icons in random order and the user has to unscramble the
icon's label by pick-and-click or by typing. It is targeted for kids 6
years of age and older.
IconSpeller was created by Chuck Smyrniotis at Rapid Prototyping
Technology. Special thanks go to his ten year old son, Christopher, for
creating a number of icons and for testing it. IconSpeller requires a
Macintosh computer with a color monitor; preferably MacOS 7.0 or higher. It
requires 384 KB of RAM and 176 KB of disk space. It is distributed as
shareware with a 10 dollar registration fee.
Thank you!

Subject: [*] Netcom/TIA/PPP Installer 1.0
This installer installs TIA, PPP, and the PPP and MacTCP settings you need
to turn your Netcom shell account into a pseudo-PPP account.
The Netcom/SLiRP/PPP and Netcom/TIA/PPP installers turn a Netcom shell
account into a pseudo-PPP account, so that you can use TCP/IP programs such
as Anarchie, Eudora, Fetch, MacMUSH, Netscape, NCSA Telnet, and Newswatcher
(or YA-Newswatcher). This doesn't increase the fees that you pay to Netcom.
The installers install PPP, and the PPP and MacTCP settings you will need
to set up Netcom and PPP. The installers also automatically install either
SLiRP or TIA into your regular personal dial-up account on Netcom, and PPP
on your Macintosh. No Unix commands need be entered by you nor do you have
you access your shell account at all, all the work is done by the
installers. Installation in your user directory takes less than 100 bytes.
The installers also detail the specific step-by-step instructions for
configuring PPP and TCP/IP programs for your user id and modem. Netcom does
not support SLiRP or TIA and will not answer any questions about it, but
allows its use.

Subject: [*] pppPrefFix 1.1.0
Many times when using MacPPP the error message:
The control panel "Config PPP" cannot
be used now because not enough memory
is available.
is encountered when our Web Browser launches a third or fourth helper
program. "Config PPP" is forced closed at this time by the Finder and when
we attempt to open it afterwards we are greeted by the error message:
Config PPP Error!
Opening Preferences
This program, "pppPrefFix", is an AppleScriptR application which was
inspired by a work around to this problem of Lofty Becker's. He found that
he could solve the problem of opening "Config PPP" being unable to open by
duplicating the PPP preference file, moving the old file out of the
preference folder, renaming the copy to the original's name, and then
opening "Config PPP".
By double clicking "pppPrefFix" you launch an AppleScriptR application
which automatically performs the above outline steps. You only need to make
sure that you have at least 200 kbytes of free RAM before double clicking.
This program requires system 7 or greater, the "AppleScriptTM" extension
installed and the extension "Finder Scripting Extension" installed or that
you have the runtime library "FinderLib" somewhere locatable with the
finder. You also should have ran "Config PPP" at least once before
attempting to use this program.
This version corrects the problem encountered with system 7.5.2.

Subject: [*] SynchWWW 1.1.1 - Smart upload from Mac to FTP
SynchWWW 1.1.1
by Aaron Freimark ([email protected])
March 18, 1996 (this is the first public release).
Here's an AppleScript I wrote which allows you to keep a local copy of your
html directory. Why? so you can edit the pages & gifs & whatever on your
Mac, and automatically suck up the new/changed items to your server. It
remembers the last time you ran the script, and only sucks up those items
which have changed since then. It works with multiple sub-directories and
will even create server-side directories as needed.
IMPORTANT THINGS:
* You need Anarchie version 1.6 or above.
* The first time you run it, it will suck up everything. So you should
first make sure your Mac has the most current versions of everything, if
you don't want to clobber your server-side pages.
* You need to edit the script with "Script Editor" for it to work for you.
Details are in the README file.

Subject: (Q) Claris Draw not printing picture elements
Hello Netters,
I am currently preparing a rather large Claris-Draw drawing, an information
flow chart with lots of lines and text elements. Elements belonging to a
common group are identified by lying a coloured box below them, so that
everything "within" this box in the huge chart can easily be identified as
belonging to one information group.
Now I have the problem that the drawing is a multi page document and on
some of the pages, the coloured boxes below my text do not print whereas on
other pages the same box - streching over several pages - prints. I tried
various printers and drivers. It doesn't affect the output. On screen the
image appears correctly.
I also already tried to assign more memory to Claris Draw, suspecting
memory problems while preparing the print postscript information. This
didn't fix the problem either.
Any suggestions?

Subject: 7.5.3 and HP driver on a P6115 (C)
Friends:
After much fiddling, I finally got 7.5.3 up and running with a DW 560 C
printer. It seems fine now, although it took many hours and a few
reinstallations.
I initially had a Performa 6115 (40MB) configured to drive a HP DeskWriter
560C using System 7.5.1 and QuickDraw GX. The upgrade to 7.5.3 did not go
smoothly, and I suspect that this platform/printer combination is so common
that other people might be interested in getting it to work. I'll cut to
the chase. After a few false starts, this worked:
First, I got a disk image of the Hewlett-Packard DeskWriter 6.0.3 driver
installer, the one originally meant to fix serial problems on 9500s (it is
available, compressed, as "dw110en" at
[http://www.hp.com:80/cposupport/indexes ... l#software]). I also
got the 14 "Update" disk images from apple's ftp site. Then I started in
earnest. I built the "System 7.5 Update Net Install" folder and put it on
the hard drive as instructed by the ReadMe. I also set aside a few
hard-to-replace extensions and control panels in another folder on the
desktop, along with the entire preferences file and my Eudora folder, just
in case I needed them later. Then I rebooted from the Performa CD and ran
the "disk first aid" (no problems). I threw out the whole system folder
and emptied the trash while working from the System on the CD. Next, I let
the CD's System installer put a totally fresh copy of System 7.5 onto the
hard drive. It made me restart, so I found myself using new, clean System
software from the HD. Onto that clean System, I inflicted the "System 7.5
Update Net Install" that I had created earlier. Next, I let M$ Office
4.2.1 restore itself by using the Office CD and the file it had parked on
my HD when it was installed long ago. These two CDs thus restored almost
all of my extensions, control panels, and preferences. I dragged the few
extensions and control panels which I had set aside (such as FreePPP) back
onto the system folder icon, and the computer dropped them into the
appropiate folders. I put my Eudora folder back into the System folder in
same manner.
Next, I did the HP 6.0.3 printer driver installation, which was painless.
I didn't install QuickDraw GX at all, because I have a gut feeling that it
caused some of my (infuriating) printing problems when I attempted this
whole upgrade the first time.
More importantly, however, I think that the key to avoiding another day of
hair-pulling is to use the Extension Manager religiously. I never liked
the darned thing, since I generally prefer to see icons before I throw them
into any "disabled" folders. Unfortunately, my aversion to the Extension
Manager did not make System 7.5.3 very happy. I needed to get used to
using the Extensions Manager, particularly in order to throw away the
default StyleWriter II desktop printer.
I still don't have a desktop printer, beacuse the HP 560C icon doesn't seem
to show up on the desktop (although it does get "chosen"). At this point,
however, I can wait until the next-generation driver comes out. This one
seems to work fine in the background, and that's good enough for now.
I hope this helps somebody.

You can probably just delete the Preferences file: nearly all apps will

1. Gatekeeper 1.3 and Connectix RAMDoubler 1.6.1 do not function

2. MacsBug 6.5.2 and PowerMacDebugServices 2.0.b14. Both works

I have a PB 540, 12/340/RAM Doubler, running the 7.1.1 that came with it. I
keep hearing that 7.5.3 is the greatest thing since sliced bread and am
tempted to make the upgrade. However, some of my favorite utilities may not
be compatible with 7.5.3, and most of the features of 7.5.x are duplicated
by many of those afore-mentioned utilities anyway.
Still, I hear good things about it, and as a consultant, I took it upon
myself to get a copy whether I used it or not, just in case I ever needed
to install it on a client's Mac. Now I just need to decide if I should use
it myself, or whether it would be worth the effort. I'm leaning towards
going for it, and am now looking for people to give me _rational_ reasons
not to, so I don't enter into it uninformed.
Is there an official list/web page/FAQ of what is and is not compatible
with 7.5.3, and/or the disadvantages (if any) of that particular upgrade?
TIA!

Simple question, horribly complex answer, I suppose.
I have a PB 540, 12/340/7.1.1, with a PPP connection to the 'net. I'm
currently using FreePPP 1.0.5, MacTCP 2.0.4 (the current version is 2.0.5,
but I can't upgrade the copy in use: I have to upgrade the original), and
PPPfloater 1.2, along with enough startup things to choke Jabba the Hut (65
startup icons, count 'em).
I hear horrid things about OT 1.0.x, and then 1.1 comes out and the press
turns from "boo" to "whew!" What's the scoop, and should I bother?

This happens because Mma has a network copy protection scheme which causes
it to look out at the network for other copies with the same serial number.
There are two ways of curing this: (1) upgrade your Mma to a newer version
such as 2.2.2, which is smarter about such things; or, (2) switch to
FreePPP and disable the auto connection feature by clicking the check box
on the main ConfigPPP screen.

Subject: Installing Office 4.2.1 & 7.5.3
I've had problems installing office 4.2.1b from CD onto my 7100/66 ever
since I upgraded to 7.5.3. It had been awhile and I was having problems
so I razed my harddrive before doing anything. Booted from CD and installed
7.5, then updater 1.0 then updater 2.0. Now I go to installed new clean
version of my favorite software.
The office installer just kept dying about three quarters of the way
through - claiming a IO disk error occured. Excuse me, IO disk error from
a CD that worked fine a few weeks ago? So I try it again - same error. I
delete everything installed by Office and try again installing 1 office app
at a time. No crash but when I ran the applications - type 11 error.
So now I'm mad. Something has to be conflicting with the installer right.
So I go into the System folder and move out everything that I don't need
for the CD and anything that wasn't present back at 7.5.1 - finder update,
OT , MacSLIP, all out.
Office installed, no problem. Dumped everything back, office still works.
My questions: 1) What is conflicting with the office installer?
2) Has anyone else had this problem, or has everyone just done
updates on existing systems. (Which is what I did at work and
had no problems at all)

Subject: System 7.5.3 (a.k.a. System Update 2.0) (C)
Just to let people know about some of the problems I've encountered with
System 7.5.3 (on a Centris 650 16/500):
SCSI drivers
============
_Please_ make sure that your SCSI disk drivers are SCSI manager 4.3
compatible. It turned out that one of mine on an external disk wasn't, and
it led to strange behaviour: copying a file from that disk to another
caused the Finder to crash or hang, but copies using DeskZap were fine.
AutoDoubler
===========
Looks like 7.5.3 isn't too compatible with AutoDoubler (part of DiskDoubler
Pro 1.1), especially if you have General Controls installed. I've had to
delete a load of files and uncompress everything on my hard disk, then
remove AutoDoubler, in order to get a stable system.
General Controls
================
Despite Apple rewriting it, it's still _evil_.
Note that I did a clean install of 7.5 prior to the update, which is what I
would recommend everyone to do.
Aside from the above problems, 7.5.3 seems _much_ faster on my old Centris
(feels like a 30--50% increase in clock-speed when working in the Finder),
and I'm convinced that Apple have done something to the disk cache other
than up the default size, as in: I think they've massively improved the
algorithm.
Hope this helps someone.

Subject: System 7.5.3 repost for anyone who needs to get it
To everyone who has been frustrated by Apple's busy signals at getting
System 7.5.3:
1-800-293-6617 extension 984 is Claris's U.S. department for getting
System 7.5.3. It is 15MB, and therefore a major hastle to download,
considering modem speeds are such that a downlaod of that magnitude
takes 5-10 hours. The problem is that the upgrade is so big. It is
better to wait for it to come snail, than have to fight for machine
space on the internet. It costs $15 USD. Perhaps someone should
repost this at the digest every new issue just to get the point across
that it is better to do snail when a download is that big. This until
everyone has System 7.5.3.
So before you worry yourself that Apple was ill prepared for the
upgrade, consider that very few people can yet afford T-1 lines which
are the only speeds decent enough for those size downloads.
Consider this part of the growing pains of the internet being so new,
and the decisions over standard protocols for high speeds still up in
the air.
Sincerely,

Subject: Why is BinHex used so much?
Hello, Mac'ers!!!!
I've always wondered why BinHex is used so often in the internet. I
don't know who started it, but doesn't it seem odd, that the method that
we've been using for so long takes up the *most* disk space. It takes
anywhere from 45%-60% (*very* roughly, that is) more disk space than the
original file. I did a little testing on my machine here, and I found
that there are like 3 other methods (that I tested with) that include all
ASCII characters like BinHex does, but takes less room. I found the
"Binary To ASCII" and "ASCII to Binary" to be most effective. I want to
propose that we switch methods of encoding software for use on the
Internet. I would love to change it to this Binary To ASCII mode. I
don't know how many people will back me up, but I am guessing *HUGE*
amount of people will flame me, hate me (more, even), etc for this
proposal, but I don't see the use of more disk space to store files, when
we have another method that takes less space.
Is there anybody that will back me up? Or is everybody against that
idea? I am prepared to send a StuffIt translator for the Binary To ASCII
conversion (and vice versa) to Info-Mac, if this proposal actually does
work out.
I really would love this proposal to become part of the work. Thank you
all for reading this, and I hope I can count on your support.
If you would like to provide tons of information *only* to why we use
BinHex instead of Binary To ASCII method more would be *greatly*
appreciated, but please, *please*, no people who want to express the
little things that why they use BinHex instead of any other data transfer
conversion method. I will take them, but most likely not read the little
ones. I can not stress this enough, because I know there are a TON of
Macintosh users out there, and if I got an E-mail for every Mac user out
there, I would never hear the end of it, literally.
Thank you for reading this, and I hope I can initiate this change. Thanks.
