Subject: [*] Barrack Installer

Meticulously crafted by Greg Lovette, Barrack is a game that is hard to
pigeonhole. It exhibits a precarious balance between action and strategy;
thinking and reflex. The feeling you get from playing Barrack is an
eccentric harmony between the automatic, mind-numbing pleasure of Tetris
and the kind of action found in Maelstrom. The result is that you'll be
left with sweat on your brow.

Barrack's goal is deceptively simple; there are a number of balls on the
play field that are bouncing like a neurotic on a sugar rush. Your job is
to use your shooter to isolate them. Sounds easy, right?

It isn't. First of all, if a ball breaks your shooter's particle beam
before it tears through the play field, your shooter overloads and
explodes in a cascade of fire and scrap metal.

The second problem is that these aren't any ordinary balls. They have
more personalities than Sybil, and none of them are particularly
friendly. We'll leave the particulars up to your imagination for now, but
suffice it to say that these aren't the kind of balls you get from bubble
gum machines.

Oh, did we forget to mention the land shark? Bosco is a rare breed of
shark capable of rearranging his molecular structure at will. This
enables him to travel at quite a clip through otherwise solid substances.
If you don't pay attention while he closes in on your shooter, you may
end up being fish-bait. He's tenacious, voracious, and about every other
-acious you can think of, all rolled into one lean, mean,
shooter-munchin' machine.

Barrack features stunning artwork, intense action, vibrant 8-channel
stereo sound effects, and the addictiveness that comes standard in an
Ambrosia game.

Price: $15.00
Requires: 256 Color Screen, 13" or Greater; 040 or PowerPC recommended

Subject: [*] Firefly Frenzy

Firefly Frenzy is program for anyone who likes fast action combined with
brilliant animation. You get to live the life of a firefly, zipping
through midnight forests, twilight skies, evening meadows and more. Each
level (42 in all) is different. Some levels feature cloud mazes while
others pit you against sumo wrestling lightning bugs. There are pee wee
rounds and stampedes to contend with as well as the occasional crazed
jumping fly. The game is non-violent in content and it's great fun for
both children and adults. Firefly Frenzy is part of an effort to bring
quality, fun games to the public in the form of ShareWare.

Subject: [*] InterSLIP Remote 1.2.1

About InterSLIP Remote (excerpt from the documentation)

With InterSLIP Remote you can control InterSLIP. You still need InterSLIP;
InterSLIP Remote is just an addition.
InterSLIP Remote has four main features which InterSLIP Control and
InterSLIP Setup does not have: with InterSLIP Remote you can measure the
time you are connected to the Internet, it can redial (this feature can be
turned on or off) if the modem of your provider is busy, it keeps a
detailed log of all your connects/disconnects and connection times, and
last but nor least it is scriptable.

Version Overview

1.2.1
- hopefully fixed the Preferences-dialog-bug in the 68k-version
- corrected Readme-file

Subject: [*] Mac-IBM-compare Version 2.0.8

This is version 2.0.8 of this report & should replace the previous
version of mac-ibm-compare.hqx.

The Mac-IBM-compare sheet compares the Mac and IBM machines CPUs,
hardware {monitor support and expansion}, operating systems {includes
number crunching}, networking & printing; it covers not only present
hardware/software statistics and features but also future possibilities.
Despite its condensed and generalized format it still provides some thought-
provoking reading on the relative merits, problems, and deficiencies of Macs
and IBM PCs. It also contains some FAQ answers about both machines and
the PowerPC line.

A more detailed PC OS sheet is planned by [email protected] for the
comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware FAQ and is maintained by him.

Subject: [*] MacAsst Tips 3/96

This is the latest issue of the hot new newsletter "MacAssistant Tips and
Tutorial".

This month the newsletter is dedicated to making that first internet
connection. What software is needed and the other items that you need to
know before connecting for the first time.

The MacAssistant Tips and Tutorial Newsletter only has tips and tutorials
plus an occasional puzzle. I do not do reviews in this newsletter. While
reviews are useful, I feel that a newsletter that actually tells you how
to use your your Mac more effectively is much more useful to the novice
and intermediate users. It includes many tips about using your Mac and
even a puzzle when you need to take a break. The tutorials are
accompanied by graphics that help to understand the article. This is a
shareware product that has even more information and tips for those that
register. This is a short, fascinating download well worth the time.
Enjoy!!!!!!!!!

bug that caused sets not to display properly.

What is it?
Marathon-Phile Juggler is a program designed to manage your Marathon files.
I wrote it because I was not satisfied with any of the current file
managers. One unique feature is that you have the ability to save your sets
as double-clickable icons. Another is a feature that tells Marathon where
to look for its resources-no longer will you have make copies of your files
for each patch or combination of patches you want to apply.

Subject: [*] Stefan's CD Menu Touchup

Stefan's CD Menu Touchup will do one thing: when installed, it changes CD
Menu's buttons. I sure liked having instant access to my audio CDs but I
wasn't too impressd with the original buttons. So I made new ones. The new
buttons are clean, 3D-style buttons. Also, the volume icon is in color,
instead of a solid black.

You'll need a copy of CD Menu and ResEdit. I've used these buttons on CD
Menu v1.3.2. It might work on other versions, but I have no knowledge of
that.

Since you'll be using ResEdit to "manually" install the buttons, you can see
if you like them or not before you "permanently" install them.

Complete instructions how to install the buttons are found inside the
archive, and if they are followed, nothing can stop you from having spiffy
new buttons.

Freeware; have fun.

Subject: [*] Stefan's Finder Menus 1.1

This release adds support for users of Aladdin's Magic Menu.

When Stefan's Finder Menus are installed, you'll have a new set of commands
enabled in your Finder. One is a Quit command (Command + Q), and another is
having access to the handy Finder Shortcuts feature that System 7.5's Apple
Guide disables.

The most exciting feature you'll have is a Reveal Original command (Command +
R) that opens an alias's original item's folder, and selects the original
(you can do the same task by selecting an alias and invoking the Get Info
command, and then clicking "Reveal Original", but having a menu command is
faster!).

You'll also have keyboard commands for common tasks, such as Emptying the
Trash (Command + T), Ejecting and Unmounting disks (Command + J and Command +
U, respectively), showing the Clipboard (Command + B), and Clearing selected
text and icons, which is Command + K.

If you use StuffIt Deluxe, you'll see that:

Expand is changed to Command + E and Preferences is Command + ;

xand if you use Aladdin Desktop Tools, you'll see that:

Gather Items is now Command + G

Stefan's Finder Menus is $5 shareware. If you don't have $5 to send me (if
you really don't have $5, like if you're a student), you can send me
something like a postacard or a disk with something you've worked on. You
can reach me at the addresses below.

If you decide to give Stefan's Finder Menus to a friend or upload it to a

me know in advance and we can work something out. My email address is:

it is largely an IBM based service and I can't find any files for a Mac.
Any info or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Subject: [A] HP deskjet printer drivers

As for the 68000 printing via AppleTalk, you could try to use the early
DeskWriter drivers...I don't know if they'll work or not. Also, there is a file
in the HyperArchive called Chuck's Printer Driver, that might work.

As for long print times with your 24 MB PPC, the problem is indeed the HP
driver. Here's a way around it. Duplicate a copy of Teach/SimpleText, and set
its memory partition to some huge amount. Say 16 MB. Just before printing,
start
up this copy of Simple Text. Now print (with a greatly reduced memory
space)...it should work better. Bascially, you want less than 1 MB of RAM free
when you print. Also, turn off background printing.

FWIW, I have a DeskWriter 310...the black and white printing is pretty good,
but
the color printing is terrible (I've tried every driver)...my ImageWriter
produces better color.
However, this same DeskWriter 310 on an Apple IIGS, using drivers supplied by
Vitesse, prints beautiful color.
It's all in the driver.

I know some apps have their own calculations, but when you have a bunch

Subject: [Q] serial ports dead?

I gave my dad my old 14.4 SupraFaxModem when I upgraded it and he
unsuccessfully tried to connect it to his SE/30 (also formerly mine). I
told him a little prematurely not to worry, but when he vistied with his
Mac, I also failed.

No comm program can see the modem, on either port (on my Mac, a Centris
650, it works fine). I tried everything (at least i think): tried different
serial cables that I know are OK, booted with extensions off, made sure
nothing was hogging the different ports I was trying, reset the PRAM,
booted from a external disk with a clean system, etc, etc, all to no avail.
So I declared his serial ports dead...however...

...and this is where i'm stumped, my dad claims he *can* print (thru the
printer port) to his old ImageWriter II. So I had him connect the modem to
the printer port, configure everything properly yet his comm software still
can't see the modem.

Assuming my dad is not hallucinating, what could be going on? Did I
overlook anything obvious or not so obvious? Could it be the SE/30 doesn't
know what to do with a Hardware Handshake cable? Any help would be much
appreciated.

Merci d'avance,
Vincent.

Any Programs for Creating Sheet Music?

>From time to time, I have noted messages on the Net about freeware and
shareware for music but until now, have had no use for them; however,
recently, my wife and I began taking piano lessons. I would like to know
if there is a program that will enable me to create blank sheets of music,
view them on my monitor, and then add and play musical notes. We would
like to copy music from our lesson book and then somehow connect an
inexpensive keyboard to our Mac so we can practice playing. I understand
this is possible; however, commercial programs, which also do much more,
are expensive. At this point we are only interested in trying something
simple to see if we want to do someting more extensive.

If there is a more appropriate net to ask this question, one that is
devoted to music for beginners, please send me its email address.

Subject: A RAM question & GhostScript

Dear Digest readers,
A while back I asked for help finding a postscript interpreter that would
act as a Web browser helper.
Many people recommended Mac GS View. I say thank you. Well, I finally had
a chance to download it tonight, and all went well until I tested
it...winmaps.ps caused my Mac to crash with a type 11 error!

Now as you may recall I had trouble with Open Transport and Type 11 errors.
Here is where my RAM question comes in. According MacGuru it doesn't
matter what RAM configuration is in your machine as long as it is DIMMs for
PCI based Mac if it is a PCI based Mac. As it is now configured, I have
one
8MB DIMM, and one 16MB DIMM. Do DIMMs have to be installed in pairs
(i.e. 2-16MB DIMMs or 2-8MB DIMMS) or not? I thought I read it didn't
matter, but I'd like to know the true experience of other people who have
similar configurations with a PowerMac 7200. Non-upgraded 7200s have
actually a single 8MB DIMM, and it is not saudered onto the motherboard
like memory was during the LC days. My original type 11 errors started
when I only had the one 8MB module.

I am beginning to have a growing suspicion that Apple's OS has yet to
really be made 100% fullproof for non-paired memory modules. If someone
else is having trouble with Type 11 errors, and has been able to upgrade to
pair their existing DIMM with an equal memory DIMM, do the errors go away?
Even if you added an 8MB DIMM, to bring the Mac to 16MB total, do the
errors go away?
Also, does the 32MB total eliminate the 24MB total Type 11 errors?

Type 11 error is the old Miscelaneous Hardware Exception Error. Memory
certainly is hardware, and it has consistently happened when running high
memory demanding applications. As an interesting side note, the errors
were more frequent with Virtual Memory and OpenTransport 1.0.8 with
FreePPP. Maybe the real cause of the incompatibility of FreePPP and
Virtual Memory is the lack of pairing of memory modules. I'd like to test
this theory out.

Thank you.
Sincerely,

Al, I think lack of this feature in Eu Lite is one of those "negative
inducers" toward Eudora Pro, along with the lack of filtering we all
lament. Though some smart person here has probably discovered how to tweek
a way round it...

I don't have the Eudora Light manual on disk any more (too big), but I got
out 1.5.4 of Lite and looked, comparing it to Pro 2.1.3 which I'm using
now...

In the Lite "Icon Bar" there are two popup menus, one for priority and one
for the encoding of attachments. In the Pro "Icon Bar" there are three,
the third being for Signatures since in Pro, with its alternative
signature, a toggling icon won't do for this any more.

And so where Lite has its "JH" icon to toggle the signature on/off (why
does Steve Dorner use the initials "JH" to stand for signature? does anyone
know? his SO for instance?;-) Eudora Pro has at the right end of its icon
bar an "RR" icon, meaning something like "Receipt Requested"--I don't have
my Pro manual by me either at present, my own SO is sleeping near it;-)
--and this is the missing "ack" function...

Negative inducers are irritating aren't they! But then, the GREPish
filtering of Pro, not to mention the presence of Spellswell (I don't!) do
make Pro a worthwhile buy!
[usual disclaimers and here...]

Nope, there isn't. Acknowledgements don't really work over the Internet and

Can anybody help with a strange problem? I purchased a Performa 6115CD
PowerMac in May of 1995 (my first Mac, after 10 years of being a PC
(l)user), and just last week for the first time decided to plug external
speakers in.

I was doing some work, and wanted to listen to a CD (the stereo is in a
diff. room), so I brought in my fiance's powered external speakers that
came bundled with her "computer" (it's wintel). System Sounds play fine,
but anything from the CD had a strange echo or chorous effect to them,
very noticeable.

I was playing a CD recorded live, so naturally I tried a different CD to
see if I was just very confused -- same problem.

Same problem with headphones, so it's not the speakers themselves.

Has anyone ran into this, and is there a way to fix it?

Microsoft Graph 3.0, the graph & chart utility that comes with Word 5.1, is
suddenly refusing to cooperate. Whenever I click the Graph button on Word's

busy. Quit and return from Graph if it is already running." Although I

I have Microsoft Graph and Help in my Word Commands folder, as well as
aliases in the Microsoft folder inside Extensions. This is in a Quadra

in my other Mac, an accelerated Color Classic with a nearly identical

I have ruled out an extension conflict -running with all extensions off

Any leads appreciated. Please cc or reply directly.

Rob, some of these at least are PostScript fonts. FuturConExtBol is a
Futura bold face, for instance. If you're using TrueType, and not the
Adobe Font Manager for PostScript, you can trash or otherwise dispose of
them.

They are as follows:

CityBol
CityMed
FuturConExtBol
SyntaUltBla

If you don't have ~ATM installed, these won't have icons; but check them
with Get Info anyway, before archiving or trashing.

I've checked the other Minio and Myria bits in Caroline & Russ Swindell's
System Zoo, a nice FMPro datafile of extensions (up here in /Info/sw I
think).

Not there.

But I wonder, has this machine been used for a 2-byte word script, like
Korean or Japanese, for instance. To me these other bits and pieces sound
a lot like early TT versions of two 2-byte fonts. They're not Japanese
>From Apple or Adobe, which would be things like SaiMincho or Honmincho.TT,
but this is still my guess...

all the best in your search!
