Subject: [*] 02-96 MacAssist Tips/Tutorial
This is the latest issue of the hot new newsletter "MacAssistant Tips and
Tutorial".
Continuing with this issue are hot links via NetScape to some critical
Macintsoh Web Sites and new software releases from various sources. This
feature is mainly intended for those people that have full internet
accounts. However, there are some very useful URL's for those that do not
have separate internet accounts. You can manually type these into your
browser.
The MacAssistant Tips and Tutorial Newsletter only has tips and tutorials
plus an occasional puzzle. I do not do reviews in this newsletter. While
reviews are useful, I feel that a newsletter that actually tells you how
to use your your Mac more effectively is much more useful to the novice
and intermediate users. It includes many tips about using your Mac and
even a puzzle when you need to take a break. The tutorials are
accompanied by graphics that help to understand the article. This is a
shareware product that has even more information and tips for those that
register. This is a short, fascinating download well worth the time.
Enjoy!!!!!!!!!

Subject: [*] MIDex 1.1; a BBEdit tool
This BBEdit extension translates characters from/to the Macintosh charset
to/from ISO Latin-1 (ISO 8859-1) or DOS (code page 437).
It uses J.P. Kuypers' translation tables for the Mac-ISO-translation.
The Mac-DOS translation tables are mine and work quite well at this state.
Please send me any suggestions/corrections.
Usage:
The conversion can be done in place, to a new window or
the converted text can be copied to the clipboard.
(See the about box for how to select these options.)
If there's a selection, MIDex will act on the selection,
otherwise it will process the whole window.
Notes:
MIDex is now a tool and therefore requires BBEdit 3.5.2
The translation code and tables have not been changed since 1.0b5.

Subject: [*] TEXT Converters 1.0 (J)
Given read-only or read/write SimpleText files, they convert them to
read/write and read-only files, respectively.
There are already utilities that do that - what does yours have to offer?
The utility to convert read-only files back to read/write has a nice
feature for locked disks, like CD-ROMs. When encountering a locked volume,
it will start up the Scriptable Text Editor and read in the read-only
file=BCs text into a new window.
These utilities are scriptable and can process whole folders and volumes at
one time.
Minimum requirements: System 7.1

Subject: [*] Unicorn Editor
Welcome to Unicorn Editor, my styled text editor based on the
WASTE text engine. It is a small, easy to use program which fill the gap
between SimpleText and a full featured word processor. For oriental
people, it fills a void for a stand alone styled text editor for double
byte language with built-in font and input method support. Unicorn Editor
v1.0 is a ShareWare ($10). If you like the program, please support
shareware concept by paying the registration fee.
This WorldScript compatible style text editor for both 68K and
PPC Macintosh is back engineered based on the features of the popular
Tex-Edit Plus. Because both Tex-Edit Plus and Unicorn Editor use WASTE
text engine, one should find that the two programs share a lot of
similarities in the text editing features. While this program is not
exactly the Tex-Edit Plus yet, especially in sound and picture handling,
the text handling is further enhanced with various Chinese code set
translation and input method support and custom bitmap font support. The
program was writen in C and compiled with CodeWarrior 8.
In a word, the position of the Unicorn Editor, just as the
popular Tex-Edit Plus, is somewhere between a full featured word
processor and the SimpleText editor. It is a very good text editor for
2-byte language with built-in font and input method support.
Best regards,
Xiaolin Zhao

Subject: 7200/90 printing problems
This is sort of cross posting but I got not much info from IO-MUG. Can
anyone point me in the right direction for fixing the serial port problem
with the 7200/90? I have Serial DMA 2.0.2 installed and everything worked
fine for a while. A few hours later and the serial port is too busy with
some application that isn't open. It's driving me crazy and may be driving
my friends to purchase a, dare I say it, w**t*l machine because it couldn't
possibly be any more difficult to set up. I've been a dyed-in-the-wool mac
user for almost a decade and never have I had so much problem. Even a clean
install of the system did nothing. I haven't tried zapping the PRAM or
rebuilding the desktop, (just thought of it) and I'm waiting for Norton
Utilities to arrive but surely I must be doing something wrong or did my
friends just buy a lemon (on my recommendation)?
Here's hoping something positive comes of this, a week of frustration and
not being able to print something more than a few times.
btw, I've tried calling sos-appl more times than I care to think of and got
the busy tone each time. Perhaps I'm not the only one having problems with
this heretical beast.

Two things:
1) Word 5.1 will open Word 6 files if you have the Word 6 for
Windows&Macintosh converter in the Word Commands folder. It will not see
them as 'Readable files' in the Open dialog box, but will open and
translate them if you drag them to the Word 5.1 icon in the Finder or
select 'All files' in the Open dialog.
2) I have found that if you launch Word 5.1 before double-clicking any
files, they will open in Word 5.1 rather than launching Word 6. Rolf's
solution of having an alias for both versions on the desktop is a good one.
Launch Word 5.1 first and you can double-click away!

I would compress Word 6 with SpaceSaver or DiskDoubler. In this way, it
will be available, although it will launch a bit slower, but double

Subject: [Q] Font Management Software
Florin Neumann wanted to know how to get Suitcase (or any font manager) to
work with System 7.5.1.
I do know the conflict with *7.5.2*--if you "Custom Remove" the
WorldScript extension(s), Suitcase 2.1.4p3 works just fine (amazing, for a
gizmo that hasn't been updated since the Gulf War
For System 7.5.1, I got out my pure Suitcase 2.0 and put it through all its
evolutionary upgrades to 2.1.4p3, then dropped it into the System Folder. We
have two 7100s, and this has worked perfectly.
Alternately, you could give up and go to Master Juggler. You can use it just
like Suitcase (open fonts as needed) and/or make up sets of fonts you need.
What I like about MJ's sets is that they're *external* (like aliases), and so
if
MJ goes south you don't have to recreate all your sets again.
Don't bother with the rest of the AlSoft Utilities package--it's useless at
best--but for $30 Master Juggler is a completely stable and updated font
manager (even supports GX!)

Dear Mac-Infomeisters,
I have had a problem with my MacIIci lately. I got it for Christmas, and
recently it has been acting up. For unexplicable reasons, it slows down to
the point where it takes a minute and a half to open teach-text. I am
running sys 7.0.1P What I just noticed is that i don't have the tuner
installed. I will get to doing that soon, but anyway: the only way I can
find to solve the problem is by reinstalling the system suitcase. I made
this easy on myself just by putting a stuffed version on my hard drive, but
it really is a minor inconveniance and it would be great if you guys can help
me. I know all odds are against it, but could it be a virus? Maybe the
little bugger is doing a bunch of calculations while teach text boots and
makes the computer slow to a crawl. Thanks everyone.

Not quite the only solution. MailConverter can do pretty well with this
format, although it may still make mistakes (since the format is not
unambiguous). By using it with the direct Eumorpha connection, you can
burst info-mac digests directly back into an Emailer mail folder (with a
single drag!) -- which some people may find to be preferable to using
EasyView anyway, since it gives you access to the messages in a full mail
program, not just a viewer (a nice viewer, definitely, but just a viewer
nonetheless). Both MailConverter and Eumorpha are available from info-mac.
You can also get the digest from comp.sys.mac.digest and the separators
will be intact.

You won't want to hear this, but the Now stuff is almost certainly your
problem. The Now Toolbox conflicts with more software than anything I
know of. Remove it--all of it--and see if your problems disappear. Almost
all of the Now features can be duplicated via small, clean,
single-purpose share/freeware extensions anyway.
I use Suitcase with very few problems. There's also Master Juggler--a bit
more complicated to set up, but perhaps cleaner. Finally, the limit is on
font suitcases, not fonts, so you can bypass it by putting several fonts
in one suitcase. But Suitcase or Master Juggler is still a much better
solution.

This looks like a fairly complex setup and I'm no expert, but to my mind,
before doing anything else, do something about the SCSI IDs. Two devices with
the same ID on same SCSI bus means trouble, even if one of them isn't powered
on. Next, check the termination problem. Internal drives are normally
terminated, so you probably have a terminated drive in the middle of the
SCSI chain.

I use PowerLock. I think it will do what you need, and it has lots of
additional features beyond just giving you password protection. You can
find it on info-mac at:

Subject: PB520 Battery/Charging Problem
Hello all,
I've a PB520 with a bum battery connection. Specifically, the machine does
not usually (if ever) recognize when it has been plugged in; that is to
say, when it gets low on power and plugged in for a recharge, the machine
does not recognize it is now able to feed off of the electricity issuing
>From the wall. The only way to fix this is to actually remove the battery
>From the machine, connect the PB to the plug, put the battery back in, and
turn it on. Obviously, this is slightly annoying. Is this a common malady
and what would be a good solution? I assume that there is some sort of
internal wiring/connectivity problem....but any thoughts on the matter
would be most appreciated.

Subject: Printer information request
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am experiencing a continuing problem with an Apple Color StyleWriter 2400
printer. It seems that these printers have a tendency to dump excessive
ink down into the black paper feed gears on the inside right, just below
the clear wiper blade. I have been told this is a problem with the
printer's "purge unit" and that high altitude is the cause. (I live at
8,700 ft in the San Juan mountains of Colorado) I have only used new
"Apple" cartridges and have never refilled any of them.
Apple Computer claims I am the only one who has ever reported this problem.
Do you have any experience with this problem or know anyone who has? I
would very much like to hear from anyone who can shed some light on my
dilemma.
Thank you very much for your time!
Sincerely,
Richard Dunham

You don't say whether you installed the 7.5.2 Printing Fix 1.1, which is
also included in LaserWriter 8.3.2. That might do it.

Subject: Question re Netscape and/or System Folder
Netscape often leaves files in my system folder. For instance,
MPEG files that were downloaded, etc. I have a Powerbook 540C running
System 7.5. Items in my System Folder are always locked, so to
get rid of these files, I have to reboot, rebuild the desktop,
put the files in the trash, and then boot up again (which also
re-rebuilds the desktop). Is there a way to:
1) Allow me to trash things in the System Folder without rebuilding.
or
2) Get Netscape to put files in another folder.
Thanx

Subject: Radius Rocket & IIsi
Help!
I've come into possession of a Radius Rocket 33, when trying to run rocketware
with my IIsi, all I get is the startup splashscreen and the launch sound effect
and the IIsi locks up. I've removed all inits and control panels except the
radius ones and still the same result. I'm running system 7.1 for all macs as
the readme sez, Radius tech support is also stumped. Does anyone out there have
any ideas on how I can get this thing to run?
P.S. I can get Rocketshare to run, but the video is soooo slow as to be
marginally useful.
TIA

Subject: Sim-Bill file
HI there!
Yesterday, perusing the last few info-mac digests, I came across a
file that promised to have some fun-potential.
The title: Sim-Bill, a Presidential Simulation.
Expecting some tongue-in-cheek parody, I downloaded the file, over
4Megs.
While the read-me proclaims all the used sound-bites as authentic,
their juxtaposition and obvious (crude) editing creates a very
tasteless collage.
Alleged statements such as "I'm not a man, I'm a homosexual", or
"I have a brother who's a drug addict, I'm very proud of him"
are two parts I recall, before trashing the thing.
As a Canadian, I have no direct political stake in this matter. I
do, however, question the propriety of such a file appearing on
info-mac.It is neither software, nor game, neither computer
information, nor Mac related.
None of us want censorship, yet, such obvious cases of character
asassination are as tasteless as some of the sexual files found
elsewhere.
Hope you don't mind my comments.

I had what I thought was a dead video section in my LC475 until I was advised
to check the internal battery. This 3.6V lithium battery powers the PRAM
which stores all the parameters of the Mac's operating system INCLUDING THE
VIDEO SECTION. If the battery dies, so does the information that tells the
Mac what to do with the video signal. Apparently, this is quite common with
475s! After replacing the battery, the 475 fired up just like new.
I strongly recommend that you check the battery before spending a large chunk
of money!

Subject: unstuffing a single item
I remember a post about how the only way you can extract a single item from a
sit archive? Well, it is very easy. You can use Stuffit Lite like another
user said, or you can use Greg's Browser. If you couple this with the
stuffit engine, you can navagate through an archive just as if you were using
the finder! Just double click on the file you want to download. Browser
also allows you to stuff any file you want just using the stuff menu,
although this requires you click a "register later" button if you don't have
a registered sutffit product, but for the occasional stuff, it is OK.

Subject: upgrading the CPUs in a Performa 640 CD
Hi all,
I've got a couple of questions about upgrading the CPUs in my Performa 640
CD (currently a Motorola 680LC40 33/66 and an Intel 486DX2-66).
1.) Can I replace the Intel 486DX2-66 with an AMD (or other clone)
486DX4-100? I had understood that they were pin compatible, and the logic
board should not be able to tell the difference.
2.) Can I replace the Motorola 680LC40 with a real 68040? Based on the
white papers stored on http://www.motorola.com the chips would seem to be
identical, except for the missing FPU support (I do not know if they
operate at compatible clock speeds).
3.) Can I replace the Motorola 680LC40 with a Motorola 680LC60 or 68060?
The white papers on the 060's strongly suggested that these chips were
designed to be 100% backwards compatible with the 040's, but I've heard
otherwise from various sources (like, it was missing some common CISC
instructions - the white papers didn't mention this, though they did say
that a few of the FPU instructions had been implemented in microcode).
They are "bus compatible", and can be slowed to a 33/66 speed - there was,
unfortuneately, nothing to suggest that they were pin compatible.
I did ask 1-800-SOS-APPL these questions, but the tech I spoke with had
ominous misgivings about working "under the hood". He said, basically,
if I wanted a faster box I should have gotten a PPC :^(

Subject: WordFinder and MS Word 5
Dear All
Though MS Word 5.1 comes with its own thesaurus, I would prefer to stick to
WordFinder that came with Word 4. I tried to install the WordFinder DA in
Word 5.1 the same way I installed it in Word 4. This didn't work.
Apparently Word 4 is designed to interact with the DA, and Word 5.1 isn't.
Has anyone found a way to use WordFinder independently?
Thanks
