If you are running under System 7, the icon will be the actual icon of the
application. If you are running under System 6.X or lower, the icon will

Subject: [*] Cindy's Recipes
Cindy's Recipes is a HyperCard stack containing almost 1000 recipes for
you to search and enjoy! It comes with a variety of features, including
the ability to add your own recipes, print a section of a cookbook or the
entire cookbook, calculate calories in a recipe, and find recipes based on
certain criteria. Following is the unsolicited review of this software
published by David Pogue in MacWorld in the January 1994 issue:
"... Cindy's Recipes, on the other hand, has very few recipes - only
25 - but the stack is absolutely charming and beautifully executed
(free, Cindy Carney). Cindy's only into desserts - cookies, pies,
cakes, and candies. (You can add your own, of course.) But with its
friendly shopping list feature and attractive design, this stack
should serve as a model for the commercial programs."
Note that it has many more than 25 recipes now! At the time this review
was written, I had only my favorite few recipes in there.
Requires HyperCard 2.1 or higher.

Subject: [*] Claris Emailer v1.0v2 Sound Replacer (Updated)
This is an updated version of the Email Sound Replacer released last week
for Claris Emailer v1.0 - v1.0v2. The last version worked for v1.0 but
would not work for those who use v1.0v2. This new file has been updated
and tested and now works for v1.0v2. (It works ONLY for this version,
and not for v1.0)
To replace your emailer's sound: with your extensions off, simply drag
your Claris Emailer program on top of the Sound Replacer's icon. The
update will automatically take place. The new sound is a stereo, deep
male voice with cool effects that says "New mail has arrived."
My apologies to those who took the time to download the first version and
could not get it to work properly. The file size of this new updated
version has been kept to a minimum for quick download.

Subject: [*] ElectroSymbols
"ElectroSymbols" is an archive containing a library of objects that can be
used to draw
electronic circuit diagrams, such as filters, amplifiers, signal
generators, digital counters
and so on.
Some time ago, I needed such symbols to render simple circuits as figures
in a book on
electrophysiological methods *). Since I couldn't find a suitable set in
the Mac ftp archives,
I decided to draw my own. After finishing the symbols needed for the book,
I could not resist
the temptation to make it more complete, and useful for electronics in
general.
The file contains the most common symbols such as:
- basic components such as resistors, capacitors and inductances.
- semiconductors, such as diodes, Zeners, transistors, FETs, TRIAC and UJT.
- transformers, batteries, current and voltage sources.
- meters, loudspeakers and lamps.
- op-amp, gates, flip-flops and a few other digital components.
- ground symbols, connectors, switches and relays.
- symbols used in block diagrams, such as sine generator and oscilloscope.
- basic signals, such as sine, square, triangle and pulse(s).
- video signals, such as frame, line, sync.
Although drawing programs can rotate an object, some of the symbols are
included both in
horizontal and vertical position to save time. For some symbols, more than
one alternative is
represented, such as the rectangular vs the zigzag resistor symbol. The
presence of some
strange symbols, that bear resemblance to electrodes used in
electrophysiological measurements,
reveal the original purpose of this symbol set.
The file "ElectroLibrary" is an object library in Claris Draw Library
format. Claris Draw is
the successor of MacDraw Pro. For those who did not upgrade, I included an
older version,
called "ElectroLibrary.MDP", in MacDraw Pro Library format. If you have
neither Claris Draw
nor its predecessor, try to find someone who has, and convert the desired
symbols into PICT
form. Unfortunately, however, this will be a tedious task, whereas some
precision and
information on line thickness and position is likely to get lost. To get an
impression of how
the symbols look, I included a sample PICT file.
ElectroSymbols is freeware, but not in the public domain.
Users are free to use and modify ElectroLibrary to suit their own purposes,
provided the name
of the original author, F. Bretschneider of Utrecht University, is not
removed from the file.
Enhancing ElectroLibrary by the addition of components and re-uploading to
any Mac ftp archive
is welcomed.

Subject: [*] FirstClass Utility Stack v1.2
FirstClass Utility Stack v1.2 is a HyperCard utility stack I've written
for the use of administrators of FirstClass systems.
It does the following:
1. Searches through your server logs looking for a particular phrase.
2. Compares lists of FirstClass conferences.
3. Convert gateway desktop listing into FC UUCP "alias" file.
4. Convert gateway desktop into text file.
5. Create a "batch admin" file that will create all the conferences in
the list, and give an alias to gateway desktops.
6. Create a "batch admin" file that will give an alias of existing
conferences to gateway desktops.
7. Sift through the FC UUCP "To:" folder, looking for mail.
8. Count the number of times an attachment has been saved.

Intercom! is a "poor man's" voice intercom, usable by any machine that is
capable of running HyperCard 2.1. It offers "near real-time" text AND
voice communications, for those with older Macintoshes that don't have AV
capability. It allows people to send voice and/or text messages over an
Appletalk network, by recording a sound in HyperCard, saving it to a file,
and copying the file over the network. When it hits its destination, the
file is automatically opened, and the sound automatically played. This
creates a "near real-time" environment, that is quite acceptable for those
with lower-end Macintoshes.

Subject: [*] WindowMenu v1.0: Lets you select windows directly
WindowMenu is a small utility that exists to let you do one thing:
jump directly to a specific window in an application. Although I have
a big monitor, I often find myself going through all kinds of
contortions to get to a window I know is open but that is buried under
a hundred others. Applications with "Windows" menus help things
somewhat, but you still have to make the trip to the menu bar.
WindowMenu will pop up a menu of all open windows in the current
application and let you select one directly when you click anywhere
while holding down control keys that you choose. It also lets you
define a hotkey to cycle forward and backwards through all open
windows. I use it every day and I think if you give it a try, you may
too.

Why not use an appletalk connection through the AC outlets. I do not have

The Adobe BBS is a FirstClass server that can also be accessed using
conventional terminal communications programs (MicroPhone, ZTerm,
ClarisWorks, etc.). The high-speed modem-connect number is unfortunately
a toll call: 1-206-623-6984.
On the BBS there is a PageMill conference that is beginning to receive
posts, and Adobe Tech Support will usually answer questions left there.
They also welcome bug reports and suggestions for improving their
products.
According to the Adobe BBS administrator, however, the service "... is
only available via dialup modem at this time. It is not on the internet.
"However, most of the files from the BBS are available at the Adobe ftp
site and/or home page (ftp.adobe.com and www.adobe.com)."
Perhaps if enough people request it, Adobe can be persuaded to activate
FirstClass access to their BBS over the Internet (which FC already
supports, BTW).

The contacts on the speaker corrode. It is easy to fix but the fix
doesn't seem to last; it's a pain in the behind. If I recall
correctly, the speaker is under the hard drive.
The si is way cool- you need NO TOOLS to take it apart- but be really
careful about static around any of the digital components, especially
if the air is dry where you are (as it is here in Pittsburgh this time
of year- usually, that is, when we aren't having floods). All sorts
of warnings apply here, I'm not going to get into them; but if you
screw up you could hurt yourself or the machine.
Just pop out the speaker, clean the contacts with fine sandpaper, wipe
them so you don't get filings in the Mac, and put it all back

Subject: Crossplatform format issue (Q)
In the near future I'll be uploading a preprint to a server that Mac,
Windows and Unix users all download from. I intend to upload the file in
two formats, Acrobat pdf (for those with Reader or Exchange) and rtf (for
those with wordprocessors that can interpret rtf). I'll be using Fetch to
upload the files.
My question is how to prepare and upload the files so that they can be
opened and read on the three platforms with the least hassle.
Should I provide each file in two versions, one compressed for the Mac and
the other for Windows? If so, what Windows compression scheme (I have
Stuffit DeLuxe)? I'm hoping that at least as far as the pdf version is
concerned, only one copy need be stored, and it'll be equally usable on all
platforms. But what should I tell Fetch to put it as? Text? Raw Data?
In Fetch, should I Binhex all the files, just the Mac ones, or use the Raw
Data or Text options for Fetch uploading?
The original file, created in FrameMaker, uses the standard Palatino,
Helvetica and Symbol fonts. Does anyone know what will happen on a Windows
machine if someone opens the rtf file in Word or Wordperfect and doesn't
have the Type 1 fonts installed? Is there some kind of default substitution
that uses standard Windows TrueType equivalents?
Any advice at all very welcome.

Ah, but you can! Get Greg's Browser, a file manager that, when the

I think I've finally found the answer! Turning Modern Memory Manager back on

A nice way of doing this if you have Now Utilities is the preferences in
Startup Manager. You can set a percentage/absolute value of heap to keep
open. (I'm not smart enough to mess with the boot block setting...doing
this with Now has worked well for me for years. In itself a good reason

This is probably Mac OS Purge, by Kenji Takeuchi. It's at version 1.0.1,
seems not to cause attacks of the nasties, and until Copeland...is well
worth having. I'd say to run it for a couple of weeks w/o changing

Subject: M.P.D. - Don't buy anything from them.
Fellows,
Here is a story of a friend of mine who got traumatized by mail order
company for the first time she attempted to buy a computer. The Company
name is M.P.D. which you can find its ads in the MacWorld magazine. The
phone number is (800)993-5673. Since this is the first time for her to
buy a computer and she doesn't know much about it, I volunteered to find
the information for her. I called a couple of companies and I found that
M.P.D. offered a pretty good deal on the computer she is looking for. BTW
the system is PowerMac 7200/90 with 8/500CD. I talked to the guy names
Phillips and he offered me the CPU for the price of $1,450 which was
about $25 cheaper than the other. I told her what I got and she decided
to purchase it. She called the guy back and ordered it. She then went to
the bank and bought a cashier check for the C.O.D delivery and faxed the
copy to them. She was happy and excited that she would get the computer
in couple of days.
Later of the day, the guy (Phillips) called her and told her that he
misquoted the computer. He said that she had to pay $150 more to get
this computer. I told her this is the trick they wanted her to pay more
money. She declined to pay more and then cancelled the order. She was
so depressed and could not believe that after all day she wasted, she got
nothing. I, myself, am not surprised by this bullshit salesman since I
experience something even worse before from other mail ordering company.
My deep wonder is why can't they do business straightforward with honesty
to customers? I'm really sick of this. And this make me very careful
before buying anything from them.
I told her that I would write a letter telling all you guys out there so
that nobody would buy anything from them again and here I did.
The following is the list of companies I bought the macintosh merchadises
form. Some are good and some are bad. If possible, avoid those bad
companies.
BAD COMPANIES
1. Dartek's Macwholesale-My worst experience! Lied that they
had product I wanted (DayStar PowerPro601) and tried to hold me off for
2-3 weeks. Their trick was that my address on credit card couldn't be
verified and need to verify it first. They claimed that they had a product
I wanted. It was 3 times that I had to call them back to verify my
address. Finally, I was really pissed off and they accepted they did not
have what I wanted. It had to be backordered. I was so mad. I cancelled
the order, torn their catalog and posted the story in the newsgroup. It
was about 3 weeks that I wasted.
2. M.P.D.-Above.
3. Others that I don't recalled.
GOOD COMPANIES
1. DMS-Memory. Never had a bad time with them. Ordered memory
from them 4-5 times.
2. MacConnection-Higher price but nice and honest to customers.
3. MacMall-This maybe a surprise. I heard a lot of complaints
about them. I had a problem on my modem I bought from them. However, it
was more than 30 days and they did not need to be responsible but they
replaced me with a new one after I begged them for a while since I did not
want to contact manufacturer.
Any experience? Please share with us.

There's not really a better PPP, it's really a matter of which system & Mac
you're running...
MacPPP 2.0.1 is the last official Merit version. It's good on 68K Macs,
though on mine I'm using the MacBel version at 2.2.0a--nicer interface, a
Japanese version (which I need sometimes), and despite some other people's
experience never a moment's trouble for me.
FreePPP 1.04 is the latest version of a project headed by Steve Dagley,
which began life as Mac PPP SD versions. If you're using Open Transport
1.08/1.1b then you definitely want FreePPP. On your 6100 I imagine you're
still using MacTCP 1.06, but as I remember all the Read Me's I think you
should be using FreePPP.
I don't keep TidBITS, but a few issues back in December there was an
excellent review of all the PPP's--if you do a search you'll come up with
it.

David, I wasn't there...[sigh]... but one candidate which fits your

I've mislaid Mainstays contact details, but I've used Capture for years

Mark, both for Macs kept // in an office network environment, and for
syncing this 540c to our desktop machine, I've used Synchronize! from Qdea,
$30 well spent.
Tried other things like Apple's File Assistant and Zync, but in terms of
speed, reliability, remote operation and filtering choices Synchronize!
seemed hands down the best choice. Synchronize! comes set for quite a
small memory partition--the one thing I've every really had to do with it

There's a demo copy, pretty much fully featured except for the size of the

which at my volume level I didn't need.

Subject: Upgrading a Performa 550
Hi Rob,
I'm writing in response to your request for information on upgrading your
Performa 550. I doubt if adding a math coprocessor will help unless you are
using an application that make extensive use on one.
I bought a Performa 550 last January, and also found it to slow to run some of
the newer software. So looked into my options for upgrading the system. There
are two ways you can do it.
1) Trade in the Performa 550 for a new PowerMac. You might be able to get $500
or $600 toward the purchase of a new PowerMac. You can find several places
that do this in the back of MacWeek (ICN 310-445-6600, or Pre-Owned
Electronics 800-274-5343).
Since you would also need a Monitor too, it would cost you about $1800 for
the new PowerMac. Minus your exchange your total cost would be about
$1200. But you would also get a 1GB Hard drive (compared to the 550's
170MB), a quad speed CD-ROM (compared to the 550's Dual speed), and 8 MB of
RAM (campared to the 550's 5 MB). So you do get more than a just a
processor
upgrade.
2) Upgrade your logic board to LC 575. This logic board exchange can be done
through DT & T (800)-622-7977 for about $350
$295 for the logic board upgrade
$ 25 for 512KB VRAM SIMM (be sure to keep the 512KB VRAM and
1MB RAM SIMM from your 550 logic
board)
$ 30 for a new back panel (the cable ports are slightly different
between the 550 and 575. This panel is
the
one you open to side the logic board out)
You need to order the extra 512KB VRAM simm because the 550 has 515KB VRAM
built into the logic board while the 575 has none built-in. (Otherwise, if
you
use only the one 512KB VRAM simm from the 550 in the LC 575 you will only be
able to display 256 colors, instead of the thousands like you do currently on
your Performa 550.
The above pricing assumes you send DT & T a bare working 550 logic board (no
RAM or VRAM SIMM's and the old back 550 back panel.
Doing the swap is not to complicated. You just slide out the logic board,
remove the VRAM and RAM SIMMs from the logic board, then send the board and
the back panel to DT & T. Wait for them to send the board, VRAM and panel.
As soon you get the board, insert the two 512KB VRAM simms and 1MB RAM simm
on the new logic board, slide it in slot and put the NEW back panel on.
Then you be running with a new 68040 33Mhz processor. I found it to be about
3 to 4 times as fast as my 68030 33Mhz performa 550. I also now have the
option to upgrade my system to a PowerPC with Daystar's PowerCard 601 (for
about $629). However, I've been told that Copland may not run with PowerMac
upgrade cards. Maybe if Daystar drop's their price for the card I might buy
one anyway. Otherwise, my next upgrade might be a wholesale swap......
If you decide to have an authorized Apple Service center do this for you,
it will end up costing more than $600 !!!!
I also had trouble locating spare LC575 logic boards. So, another place you
might want to try is Shreve Systems (800)-227-3971.
I got my upgrade from DT & T last June and haven't had a problem yet. So,
if you don't have the cash to upgrade all the way to a PowerPC, option #2
can give you a good preformance increase for a few hundred dollars.
If you have any more questions, drop me a line.

Subject: Upgrading a Performa 550
My girlfriend owns a Performa 550. I use it very infrequently, but when I
have to use, it runs very slow. I need some information on making it faster.
I read somewhere about Math-Co-Processors, will one help me? I also read
that I could do a motherboard swap up to a Performa 575 (The 575 runs a 68040
chip, while the 550 runs a 68030 chip). I also read that if I get the
upgrade to a 575, I can go power PC later if I wish.
If anyone has done this upgrade, or knows anyone that has, please e-mail
me. Also, if anyone knows where I can get the parts, please e-mail me as
well.
I would prefer e-mail responses, but please send a reply to the list as
well. I am sure that there are others somewhere that want to do this as
well. I will post to the list when I am done with the upgrade to tell if it
has gone well
Thank you

I asked a few weeks ago for advice in choosing font develpment software and
said I would summarize private replies to the list. This will be a short
summary because of the unanimity of the responses I received: everyone
recommended Macromedia's Fontographer!
For details: http://204.162.16.3/Tools/Fontographer/index.html
Thanks for the help.

Subject: [Q] File size management corrupt on PPC 8100 ?
We have received a new Power Macintosh 8100/100 a few weeks ago.
Creating a new file with simple text (F1-1.1.1) and saving it without any text
inside on the internal (1G) hard disk reveals in the get info dialog: Size 17
K,
332 bytes. Putting 1 character inside reveals Size 33 K, 333 bytes. 2
characters:
Size 33 K, 333 bytes. Copying the same (empty) file onto a HD flobby disk
inside
the internal drive reveals:
1 K, 332 bytes. This seems ok. There is an apparent problem with the file size
management on the internal hard disk..
Our local University computer service could not fix the problem but thought
about
reformatting the disk with an upgraded (french!) system, which we don't not
have
available yet. Is there any warranty by Apple for such problems?
Any help is appreciated.
Our system in short:
Machine = Power Macintosh 8100/100 (ID=55g)
Date Manufactured = 7/26/1995
System Version = F1-7.5 (french system, not upgraded)
Hard disk:
Capacity = 1,092,763,648 Bytes
Manufacturer = QUANTUM
also included:
Apple CD drive,
1.4 MB flobby drive.
Thanks in advance and
best regards
Gerhard ([email protected])
