G3 resurrection: trying to get internet

Post by zeitguy » November 12th, 2008, 11:04 am

Hi all,
I have searched "TCP" in topics and haven't seen this, so I will ask here:

I am resurrecting a 10 year old mac g3, 266mHz, 8 Gb drive, 180 Mb Ram with system 8.1 installed. It last ran on a corporate ethernet, and prior to that on a token ring network.

Currently I run a home network off Comcast, with an internal cable modem and a local router/wifi to which my mac is wired. I tried to get DHCP automatically from the router but that wouldn't bring up any TCP services, so I went back into the MacTCP control panel and set the manual parameters by copying in router, dns IPs from my PC "ipconfig /all" info. On the PC the router is called "Default Gateway" or at least that is the IP I used for the router IP in the Mac set up. When I entered the DHCP Server IP from my PC into the Mac Router IP parameter, it was rejected for being out of my local network.

I went into the local Apple store and found a friendly genius who had worked on these puppies back in the day, and he ran down the parameters for me. I went back home and looked at his instructions and my set up, and I had already done everything he suggested.

The interesting thing is after doing the manual setup, I was able to ping the IP I had assigned the mac from the pc. Navigator loads and seems to recognized a network socket etc, but simply can't resolve any URL, either numeric, or domain name, into a connection.

- I made sure the Appletalk was pointing to the printer port, not the ethernet
- I get Dave sharing errors. Dave is installed but when I try to bring anything up that references it, it hangs the system solidly. I have to unplug the machine to get back into the finder

Well, way too much info. Thanks for any ideas or help in advance.

Well, right off the bat... you shouldn't be using MacTCP with anything higher than Mac OS 7.5+

Instead, you should be using OpenTransport and it's built in TCP/IP control panel. If you are not or do not have these, I'd suggest searching your hard drive for them. It might be easier to just backup important documents and reinstall Mac OS, because if you have MacTCP and Dave installed, then it's pretty likely a whole host of things are messed up.

With a basic home cable internet service and home network, you only need what is included in Mac OS, not anything else. If you reinstall a fresh clean copy of Mac OS 8, you'll essentially be able to just start up your computer and instantly have internet access à la modern day Windows and Mac OS X.

If reinstalling Mac OS 8 is not an option, then you can try going to Extensions Manager and choosing the "Mac OS Default" set of extensions, or whatever it's called. If you're lucky that will fix everything up nicely, then you can go back into Extensions Manager and manually enable any third party extensions you need.
I am now telling the computer exactly what it can do.

I have the OS 8 install disk. I will try to go the open transport route first, after I figure out how to disable Dave at all levels.

The "genius" at the Apple store didn't say anything about Open Transport. And he worked as tech support at a Mac shop back in 97 or 98 when this was all shiny and fresh.

BTW I notice you are programming in Real Basic. I also had a license and have an install CD for RealBasic 1, as well as FutureBasic (which crashes the system everytime it tries to start up). In fact, I have an original '92 floppy with Microsoft QuickBasic for the Mac, the binary math version, which this system can't read. Have you tried all of these Basics?

Do you know a source for QuickBasic? I did a little visualization program in it that I would love to see run again, just for sentimental reasons....

Actually, all the RealBasic programming I do today is strictly Mac OS X-focused.
