A friend of mine has an old iPhone, and still has the original operating system. Can I update his operating system through my computer and account, or will he need to do it on his computer?

You can indeed update the iPhone's operating system from any computer, just be sure not to synchronize - it'll ask you if you're "sure" you want to delete all the data if you try. If it is an original iPhone it can only go as high as iOS 3.x.
