iPhone won't update

I have an iPhone 3g that won't update does anyone have any suggestions.

It takes a lot of time. After trying to update to os4 several times I decided to start the update at bedtime and just let it work on it overnight. It took about 4 to 5 hrs to finish. The update also wiped out my photos and my notes. I had copied my photos to my computer, so that wasn't a big loss, but I did have a few notes lost that I would have preferred to keep.

It only took my phone like 20 minutes and iTunes automatically backed up and restored everything, including my notes. The OP should more accurately describe whatever steps he's taking and problems he's experiencing.
