When my default iphone 3GS gps is set to tracking mode, the backlight fades n my iphone enters sleeping mode after a few mins. Anyone knws hw to rectify this? Cant be touching my screen every now n then while driving.

Go to Settings -> General -> Auto Lock and turn it to off before you go on trips where you need your GPS. Or if you prefer you can leave it this way always.

This essentially gives your iPhone the same behavior as a laptop computer. It waits for you to tell it to switch off the display and "lock" the touch screen.

Just remember to turn that off if you don't need it and you don't think you can be mindful of it If it stays on it'll just drain your battery in like an hour.
