Is it possible to have Mail automatically change a misspelled word instead of my having to go back and manually correct it -- like Pages automatically makes the changes?

Yes, right click inside the message composition area and enable "Correct spelling automatically"

There must be another place to do that for it does not change. Then, too, must it be so set for each email I compose?

All Cocoa apps (like Mail and Pages) use Mac OS X's global spell checking system, which also controls auto correct. The auto correct doesn't change every word, only common words like try typing "im" and you'll see it'll change it to "I'm".

And no, once you turn it on, it's on.

Here's a little video I just recorded to demonstrate: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OXKRWSnwzQc

Let me ask again. When I do go to the message and control click and when I click correct spelling automatically, nothing happens. I do have grammar checked but the automatic spell correct does not accept a click. How might I get it to do that?
