Well, Microsoft Access is a database platform, so if you're using it to manage contacts then what you're actually using is an Access database designed by somebody to do that.

Apple's FileMaker subsidiary makes stellar database products, including their namesake FileMaker Pro (available for PC and Mac) and also the more personal and user friendly Bento (available for Mac, iPhone and iPad).

Both FileMaker Pro and Bento have numerous templates, including of course contact management.

Yes and no. There's no Mac-native version of Access, but like all other Windows programs you can run it on your Mac using either Boot Camp or one of the virtualisation software offerings (VirtualBox, VMWare Fusion, Parallels etc).

Using Access to manage a contact list is like using a military tank to drive to the supermarket, however.

There are plenty of choices, ranging from specific contact managers like http://marketcircle.com/daylite/ to custom databases from Bento. It depends on what you need. My needs are really simple, so I use http://www.jumsoft.com/relationship/
