Large SketchUp projects are indeed graphically intense but also consume many processor cycles and memory storage. Make sure you have a large amount of memory too, which will be much less expensive to upgrade.
The EVGA Nvidia GeForce GTX 285 offered by
OWC is an extremely capable card with a whopping 1GB of dedicated graphics memory.
You can also find many Mac cards and PC graphics cards on which are reprogrammed ("reflashed") to work with Mac Pros eBay. The 512MB Radeon 4870 is a popular choice, like
this one.

Thanx for Your Reply,
Memeory and Processor-Speed is no Prob. It realy is a grafic card problem - as Google also confirmed to me.... But I was not sure wich card realy will work - because apple normally only provides ATI Cards.
But I will have a look for the Nvidia.
Kind Regards.

Hi,
Simular question here. I have a Mac Pro 1.1 (2 x 2.66) with 16mb ram (the max). The video card (stock) is a Nvidia Geforce 7300 GT. Connected to that I have a 30" Densy & a 20" Samsung, and all works well.
Now I’d like to add a 3rd & maybe 4th monitor, probably a 24" (or 27") and for sure another 20" Samsung thats just here collecting dust. I’m not a power graphics user. I run mostly Logic Pro (for music), and just want to have more windows open. I know zero about graphics cards (& compatibility) & this Mac Pro is now over 4 years old.
Any advice mucho apprecio !!
Grac(th)ias

Two of these will handle all your displays:
http://bit.ly/hoJpNP They're economical, much more powerful than your 7300, and will give you OpenCL access.

Having a hard time finding the 8800’s. Apparently a ATI Radeon 4870 would work. Would my Mac Pro 1.1 (which is apparently PCI-E 1.0) accept 2 video cards (allowing for 4 screens)?
Thanks in advance

The card I linked you to should work, can you not find one that you can buy and ship to your country?

Yes.
