I have a heap of video on my Hitachi DZ-hs500 camcorder ( uses a Hard drive for storage) and have accessed it using the software supplied "ImageMixer 3 for DVDCAM " which I have now loaded on my Mac. However I cant get the files into iMovie. Can anyone help?

You'll probably have to use whatever software they provided to save the movies somewhere to your hard drive first. I have no experience with those hard disk cameras. It's unfortunate they can't make it just a standard external hard drive the computer can access, but it sounds like you won't be able to access the camera contents directly from iMovie.
Afterwards, go to File -> Import and import them from whatever destination on your hard drive they're saved in.
What format are the files in?

I am now telling the computer exactly what it can do.
