G3 resurrection: trying to get internet

Hi all,
I have searched "TCP" in topics and haven't seen this, so I will ask here:
I am resurrecting a 10 year old mac g3, 266mHz, 8 Gb drive, 180 Mb Ram with system 8.1 installed. It last ran on a corporate ethernet, and prior to that on a token ring network.
Currently I run a home network off Comcast, with an internal cable modem and a local router/wifi to which my mac is wired. I tried to get DHCP automatically from the router but that wouldn't bring up any TCP services, so I went back into the MacTCP control panel and set the manual parameters by copying in router, dns IPs from my PC "ipconfig /all" info. On the PC the router is called "Default Gateway" or at least that is the IP I used for the router IP in the Mac set up. When I entered the DHCP Server IP from my PC into the Mac Router IP parameter, it was rejected for being out of my local network.
I went into the local Apple store and found a friendly genius who had worked on these puppies back in the day, and he ran down the parameters for me. I went back home and looked at his instructions and my set up, and I had already done everything he suggested.
The interesting thing is after doing the manual setup, I was able to ping the IP I had assigned the mac from the pc. Navigator loads and seems to recognized a network socket etc, but simply can't resolve any URL, either numeric, or domain name, into a connection.
- I made sure the Appletalk was pointing to the printer port, not the ethernet
- I get Dave sharing errors. Dave is installed but when I try to bring anything up that references it, it hangs the system solidly. I have to unplug the machine to get back into the finder
Well, way too much info. Thanks for any ideas or help in advance.
